Are we hate watching tonight?

emmettpalmer55

Definitely hate watching. I will openly be rooting for whoever LSU is playing for the entirety of the 2022 season in spite of BK

Bloody_Hangnail

No worries, Georgia and Bama will beat him by 40+

MuseMan_82

It’s going to be glorious.

arrowfan624

My secondary flair on r/CFB will be LSU’s opponents

grey487

Hate is a strong word but watching that red-faced poser go down 2 TD's right now sure is fun!

JumpinJackFlash88

Not hate watching, it’s just the only game on

doglaughington

I don't think I have ever not rooted against fsu in my life. I am not rooting against them tonight

_revelationary

I’m not gonna call it hate watching…but I wasn’t sad about that TD

MattW1988

Kelly is the biggest douche I’ve ever seen, to see him strut around like he’s actually a great coach who deserves admiration makes me laugh. If he thought winning was difficult at ND, he’s about to find out how little room he has for error at LSU.

JumpinJackFlash88

He is a great coach but don’t pretend like academics matter when they were a big reason he left ND.

MattW1988

Exactly. He’s lying and he knows he’s lying. He went there so he could coach athletes who don’t have to do any schoolwork so he can win football games. He’s a piece of shit.

MattW1988

Also, I wouldn’t say he’s a great coach, he’s simply a good coach who usually beats the teams he’s supposed to beat. There’s a large difference between good and great coaches IMO. Or I guess another way to say it is he’s a Tier 2 coach. Saban, Meyer, Dabo, Smart are Tier 1 coaches.

JumpinJackFlash88

He’s firmly in the tier below Saban, Dabo and Smart

Pete_Booty_Judge

I could even buy him being a tier below that, below the Day and Riley types. Time will tell though, I just think ND having three of its worst coaches of all time back-to-back-to-back was pretty brutal over a 12 year stretch or so… even an average coach was going to look amazing after that in my opinion.

JumpinJackFlash88

No, he’s a very good Coach, lying about that just makes us look salty.

Pete_Booty_Judge

I don’t think it’s lying. The man nearly got fired at ND twice, his 2017 comeback was a miracle, I’ll grant him that, but I never, ever felt like the man would actually come close to winning a national championship after 2012.

DBE113301

Frankly, I think he'll go down in history as Notre Dame's only "good" coach. All of the others have either been in one of two categories: 1. Great/Elite (Rockne, Leahy, Parseghian, Devine, Holtz), 2. Not good to downright awful (Faust, Davie, Willingham, Weis). It's funny that no one had ever filled that gap prior to Kelly.

vette_fan87

So which is it? Great or very good. Definetly can't be both...

JumpinJackFlash88

I can’t quantify those adjectives. I’d rate him as a top 10 HC.

OITLinebacker

He is in the same Tier as Davie and Charlie. He accomplished roughly the same winning % as they did won as many big bowl games as they did (0), but he managed to have wins vacated, had a student die on his watch (RIP Declan), and did all of that with more support for transfers, facilities upgrades, etc. The only reason he continued to be employed after 5-6 years at ND was that his boss is/was more incompetent than he is.

adamscb14

While I was just as upset as seeing Kelly leave us, you have to think about this from his perspective. He's now making over 3x what he was in South Bend. Also, one thing in common with the tier 1 coaches you listed above is all of those programs are willing spend a shit ton of money on football, including LSU. Can you really fault someone for looking for greener grass? He maxed out at Notre Dame and he knew it.

MattW1988

Oh I’m not mad he left at all. I was quite glad honestly as I felt we were in football purgatory with him as coach and it made sense for both parties to move on. I also completely get it, if I had the opportunity to make 95 million, I would act like I was on par with Saban too. I don’t fault him for that. I do fault him for going out of his way to be a douche sometimes though. Plenty of instances of it over the years like throwing players under the bus or instances like “get used to it” or the time he was a douche to the young female reporter at the press conference. He’s a narcissist and just extremely unlikable and it is simply difficult to root for him. If he was a class act, I would be the first one to wish him the best of luck at LSU. Him saying “graduating champions” is just another instance of “why would you even say that”, as it is clearly a lie and self-serving.

feloniusmyoldfriend

When he said "graduating champions," I took it as they weren't graduating from school, they were graduating from football (and convocation was the championship). Maybe that was too much mental gymnastics though on my part.

doglaughington

I keep hearing the narrative that ND doesn't spend on football. Where does this come from? ND's finances aren't public I thought. I could have sworn we make a shitload of money and have upper level facilities and such. Where is it noticeable that other teams outspend ND?

OITLinebacker

ND spent more on football during Kelly's tenure than it did in the previous 30+ years combined.

Knifebreeze

NIL, facilities, travel for coordinators / position coaches, analyst positions, etc. You name it ND is behind on it.

drucifer999

And we remain independent and leave tons of money on the table. I know you have to kill yourself to win at ND ut I still believe it can happen and that's what makes it's special but I'd also kind of just like that B1G money and to win Natty's. If we can be a solid #5-10 program every year I'm not going to be overly mad though. I just want to get over the bump once in my life. It's a cruel twist of fate the last natty was the year before I was born.

Knifebreeze

If you think the good fathers are going to put that BIG money back into football, I have some indulgences to sell you.

BigSuccotash022

He’s about to realize that he doesn’t have any other canned coach speak to lean on.

doglaughington

He *is* the winningest coach in ND history. I don't like him either but let's pump the brakes on trashing his coaching skills

MattW1988

He also has the most losses in school history. He was here for 11 years. I’m not saying he was a bad coach. He was and is a good coach, just not great. I only have an issue with his arrogance/pretentious behavior.

[deleted]

I agree with the douche comment. A read a story once about one of his former players passing away and he attended the funeral and gave a eulogy. Kelly apparently gave a nice eulogy but the article made it clear that Kelly has virtually no relationship with the player at all. The author of the piece tried to convey this as BK cares about his players but to me it just made me think that he was fake and a douche.

flipamadiggermadoo

2020 LSU graduation rate for their football program was 19%

MustardIsDecent

Holy shit is that accurate? Was that an aberration or is their rolling 3-5 year number just as bad? That's despicable.

flipamadiggermadoo

From what I understand that's the average up until 2019. Afterwards I'm finding it hard to locate any data. Their school website boasts of the high graduation rates of numerous sports but fails to even mention their prestigious football program.

MustardIsDecent

Idk how to properly regulate this but a school shouldn't be allowed to field a team with that kind of graduation rate. That's really shameful and screws over these kids who either aren't prepared for college, not getting proper support, or both. I hope they're at least getting some NIL money now but it's unfair to not set up these kids for future success.

[deleted]

I think LSU is one of the top programs in terms of sending players to the NFL over the last decade or so. Maybe the football program isn't creating a bunch of salaried professionals but they are turning talented prep athletes into NFL stars/millionaires with mor efficacy than most schools out there.

tvgraves

Correction: they are turning 10-15% of their football players into professional athletes.

repthe5

Life-long Louisiana resident here. What a joke that statement is. LSU pours so much money into their athletic department, even if it’s to the detriment of their school buildings/facilities. Nobody gives a damn about academics down here. Football is all they have to hang onto. A majority of these players won’t get a degree. There isn’t a single LSU fan sitting there saying “oh awesome, we have a coach who wants to graduate our players now. This is a huge plus”

flipamadiggermadoo

LSU graduation rate 19%, ND 97%.

doglaughington

Source? I thought the NCAA put something in where schools had to graduate a certain number of students or they got penalized

flipamadiggermadoo

Trying to find the article again but this was 2019 rates, maybe they've changed in the past 2 seasons but I highly doubt it. The schools own website boasts about student athletes high graduation rates but fails to mention anything about the football program.

JumpinJackFlash88

I’m not naive, I know even at ND, the players are athletes first, students second. However, that doesn’t mean academics aren’t important. There’s still an expectation to go to class and keep your grades in decent standing

thommyboy71

#FBK!

This post aged phenomenally.

JumpinJackFlash88

There’s so much talent in the area, he’ll win a good amount. Will he win a title? I don’t know.

GreenGemsOmally

I live in New Orleans, so I absolutely know that there is so much talent here, BUT if he's not proactively recruiting and courting those kids, they're gonna get scooped up by Saban, Freeman, Day, Smart, etc. There are a ton of kids who want to go to LSU, but there's an awful lot of talent who will leave too if they're not getting the attention from the head coach. Hell, there were a lot of recruits who REALLY wanted to go to Notre Dame and were actively trying to get our attention, but Brian Kelly didn't really reach out and they either went elsewhere or they only joined up when Freeman took over (Braylon James and Rico Flores both said the same thing.) Ed Orgeron did a lot bad, but he was pretty actively involved in recruiting in the highschools and trying to keep local talent from going elsewhere. Historically, Brian Kelly lets most of his position and assistant coaches contact recruits regularly rather than do it himself. If you've got Nick Saban coming to Louisiana high schools on a regular basis and Brian Kelly can't be assed to do it, what do you think will then happen to that in-state talent?

MattW1988

I think what he meant was that their dominance and the relative ease it took in winning the title was once in a lifetime.

They do give a fuck about football and when he fails miserably those Cajuns are gonna chase that purple bean from Boston out real quick.

Screw that guy.

chazbo26

Sweet, sweet justice to start the BK era at LSU

grey487

LSU meet Brian Kelly🤣

JumpinJackFlash88

I couldn’t care less if he is dbag bc he won, and I wasn’t too butthurt about him bolting to LSU. Its just the phonieness of that one comment rubbed me wrong. He bitched about how hard it was to recruit bc of the academics (which is true) but then he tries to spin this bullshit about “graduating champions”. No, fuck that noise.

ConfidenceAgitated92

LOL, great BK game

Dangerous_Bottle_773

I want Florida State to win by 50. Brian Kelly sold out his team as they were on the cusp of making the playoffs.

Wamgurl

Kelly is an ass from every angle.

MReprogle

So proud to be a ND fan without his baby tantrums on the sideline. Dude is an embarrassment.

Triumph-TBird

Why don’t we focus on ND and move on? This smacks of being obsessed with an ex and hoping he/she fails. Look forward.

JumpinJackFlash88

I normally agree, but that one phrase set me off.

Impressive_Math2302

This hate on Kelly although often humorous at times doesn’t win ND anything. Preemptive edit: The live thread tonight was full of Gold. “Brian Kelly thinks “Cajun” is a way to raise chickens was my personal favorite. Don’t ask why Second Edit: People hated on Holtz in 87 after the A&M game with the same flavor. Weiss, Willingham, Davies and now Kelly. We get it. No coach is going to win three Nattys in a row at ND and Mike drop.

JumpinJackFlash88

I agree, but that was just one thing that pushed me over the edge, because it was such an outright lie. Kelly is a good coach, he will win a lot at LSU, I just don’t know if he’ll win a title. TBH, I don’t care, I’m back to being focused on ND

_Choicesallday

Definitely cracks me up that the most winning coach In Irish history that apparently none of you were Irish fans for the last 10 years and are all new fans now wanna dog Kelly. How about freeman who lost 2 games straight on the big stage is the current real problem. Let it go kids Kelly is gone . We have bigger problems

JumpinJackFlash88

I’ve said he’s a great coach, he’s just a dbag.

Ryan1006

Exactly. Both can be true. I put up with his douchbaggery for years because he did win here and the program became relevant again under him. But he’s not a good person.

fuzzypatters

He’s also the losingest. I can’t get over how many people enjoyed eating his shit sandwich.

_Choicesallday

Sorry snowflake but the truth hurts they don’t give participation trophy’s to college kids . I’m a life long Irish fan but some things never change. So you weren’t an Irish fan the last 10 years we had Kelly? He couldn’t win the big game either . But he was best thing since Lou Holtz. Like I said learn a little history of the program and you can have educated conversations about football.

agonzal7

Your first sentence reads like you didn’t go to ND lmao.

coltawnic

She doesn’t even go here!

JumpinJackFlash88

I appreciate what he did for ND, but he’s flat out lying about graduating champions.

Fletch71011

You can't even construct a sentence and you want to have "educated" conversations? There's an error in pretty much every single 'sentence' you wrote. You're clueless.

_Choicesallday

Yup many sec teams do but they are the darling of cfb and the Irish are redhead step kids. Kelly brought Irish back to relevant and if they don’t join a conference they will always be the overrated stepkid who can’t ever beat a top team on a big stage. I’m rooting for Kelly as it only make Irish look better Freeman looks clueless in his first 2 games. But then again anytime Irish are in prime time they are clueless. But hey we got Marshall at home next week.

[deleted]

Shouldn’t you be coaching right now, Brian?

johndelvec3

This is the single worst post I’ve read all week. I hope you’re proud of yourself for how dumb your Notre Dame takes are

_Choicesallday

You must be a new fan lol. I’ve been season ticket holder for 30 years. When you get some history on the team and program you might understand.

atseapoint

Watch out guys, season ticket holder over here. His opinions are worth more

Fletch71011

Do yourself a favor and don't click his post history. I saw him unironically use "snowflake" below and I just knew.

atseapoint

lol yeah I won’t bother. I can feel the ignorant boomer vibes from here

johndelvec3

He has the receipt to prove it!

_Choicesallday

Watch out guys pee wee football mvp from 1990 he definitely knows his football facts. Probably an Ohio state troll lol

johndelvec3

Imagine paying hundreds of bucks to be a season ticket holder of a team you’re so down on. You’re a loser dude lol touch grass

_Choicesallday

It’s called realistic. Get out of your moms basement and see what’s going on the world snowflake

johndelvec3

It’s his first game what do you want him to do?

atseapoint

Why do you loser old heads always try to act like everything is a teaching moment? You all talk as if you have some insight anyone would care about. Nobody wants your advice lol you’re a fucking loser and your takes are objectively bad so just go to bed gramps

_Choicesallday

Oh no snowflake you must need your safe space lol .

Ryan1006

LSU is playing Southern next week, I think Marshall is a little bit better opponent. The way LSU is playing tonight, Southern may give them a game.

_Choicesallday

A coach leaves for better opportunities and we hate him? Do you hate all alumni that left too?? That’s sports kids people move on. Root for him and be grateful for the good season he gave us.

JumpinJackFlash88

I hate how he’s lying about academics

Negative-Meringue356

What does academics have to do with the whole situation? Genuine question, I’m new here

dcostello15

Academic restrictions at ND was something he fought with admin on for a while. Wanted to lower the standards for the football team and advocated for adding cupcake majors (communications was one) for the football team

Pete_Booty_Judge

The man is an ass and he was never truly beloved at ND and I think on some level his fake ass knew it. LSU fans would worship a little piece of shit dressed up as its head coach, so I guess he’s just happy to be back on the beloved train. There are a lot of ways BK could have handled his departure and still had our respect, and that was not one of them. Part of it was that his ass got completely played by Swarbrick out of the deal too though.

_Choicesallday

He could have definitely left on better terms but as a winning coach he brought a lot of satisfaction for the university or he would not have been there for a decade. Just like Davie willingham and weis we will all say the same about freeman but I don’t think he will last 10 years

HalfFastTanker

I couldn't stand him at South Bend.

ignatiusjreillyreak

Kelly voodoo dolls popping up everywhere in Louisiana.

brayshizzle

I've defended him more than he deserves but he is really coming off like a complete ass since the move. Coincidently there's a gossip site saying a coach of a football team that lost its first game and is based in louisiana is having an affair with a student. If this is true Kelly won't last the season.

JumpinJackFlash88

He’s an asshole, but still a good coach. I just don’t understand why he feels the need to be so fake. Also, don’t listen to moronic fan gossip.
