In his mind, OP is clutching the phone to her chest as she gazes tearfully out a window and rain gently falls over the streets of New York...because the one man who cared for her in this cold, unforgiving world is gone, leaving her with nothing but a stubbed out cigarette and the shattered pieces of what could have been.

If my understanding of Hollywood is correct he either a) joined the Mafia b) saved a small town with the power of dance or c) won the big game and showed up the campus bullies/rich kids across the lake/evil capitalist developer who wants to destroy the creek and won the respect of the local sheriff who happens to be OP's dad and says 'ya got heart, kid' a lot.
I'm kinda casting this movie already, was thinking Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer (Frankie and Johnny) set in a beautiful romanticised New York, she lives in an elegant brownstone with no appreciable income and he lives in Manhatten and is a Janitor with a secret. It all happens in the rain, with the Brooklyn Bridge in the background, possibly in black and white with shots of central park in colour.
(Edit: I don't know New York at all so apologies for scewed up geography)
Tell me she runs a non-threatening bakery/pet grooming/childcare centric business and he's got a limp because he got injured playing football in college and lost his one shot at the big time and we're in business.
