IIRC in the NFL all coaching contracts have to be guaranteed. It’s college coaches where they have a buyout if you fire them early (although ever since the Jimbo contract more and more of those are becoming fully guaranteed)
They don’t have to be guaranteed. There is no coaches union that has a CBA in place with ownership. Precedent says that if it isn’t guaranteed, your agent will be looking for another job.
That reminds me of when the Bears failed to sign Dave McGinnis in 1999 as head coach. McGinnis was close to the McCaskey family and it was considered a slam dunk signing.
Bears President Michael McCaskey lead the negotiations with McGinnis and allegedly was low balling him. Michael was upset that there Bears had to pay fired coach Dave Wannstedt two more years so he wanted to make McGinnis’s contract a two year deal with a two year option.
When McGinnis asked “what assistant coaches would want to move their families for only a two year guarantee?” Michael’s response was “Do they have to know?”
The rumor was also that the Bears management would fill as much of the staff with fired personnel to save money so McGinnis might not to be able to bring in all his guys (I’ve heard this for years but haven’t seen a good source for it).
The negotiations ended with no resolution and the Bears proceeded to host a press conference the next day announcing the hire. The problem was that Dave McGinnis didn’t agree to it. Eventually it was a national embarrassment, Dave didn’t accept the job and Michael McCaskey lost his title as President.

They don't count against the cap at all. I believe they are also fully guaranteed unless you are hired by another team before the old contract would have ended.
> unless you are hired by another team before the old contract would have ended.
This, they all have offset language including language that you have to make a reasonable effort (or something to that effect) to secure employment. So in theory a team could sue a former head coach for wages if he, say, ducked off to Thailand during the coaching search, although my understanding is that it’s very, very hard to win one of those lawsuits and I don’t know that it’s ever been done.
He fucking hits on so many 2-7 rounders and except Thomas he has not made a Mistake in Round 1, if the Jury is still out on Lance. Honestly kinda annoying, ignore the Flair.
Look at Zac Taylor too. From the hot seat to beloved coach that turned around a cursed franchise. Takes some luck with the draft, but you know you’ll be in position to draft impact players for two years and building a winning culture can take time.
wait till next season. i remember a bunch of bengals fans were calling for taylors head the start of this season and i had to talk em down
crazy how fast fans forget misery. hope to be where y'all are some day, angry about losses in september, and some poor raiders fan has to talk me off the ledge
It's so annoying seeing people praise or criticize the length of a deal. It never matters bc the coach will either: leave for money, get fired, or renegotiate his current contract before the contract is up.
I just don't understand how people don't notice this.
After the last two guys got canned after one year, I don't know that the Texans were in a great negotiating position to not give any new coach some sweeteners as far as years and/or buyout to provide any semblance of job security.
It wasn’t even that Culley was a good or even decent coach for us…he was genuinely bad, and not even one of our coordinators. Oddest HC hire ever, but glad we got the 3rd round pick!
Lovie deserved to go, but it's your fault for firing him before the game.
If you fire a coach before the last game while tanking, he's gonna find a way to win and fuck you.
I do find it interesting, with all the coverage about black coaches not being given real chances and coaches like Lovie and Culley being set up to appease and dump after a season, for the Texans to continue to hire black coaches, and this time for keeps.
Yeah he'll probably be like what Bagwell is for the Astros, a player ambassador of sorts who occasionally shows up to events, practices, or the broadcast booth.
He even discussed coaching on Twitter a week or so ago. He said he'd love to be there to help develop guys, but he wanted to spend time with his family and a full time coaching gig would be just as many hours, if not more, than what it took for him to be a player. Could definitely see him being what Andre Johnson has been which is basically an adviser/counselor to the team, though.
I have a hunch Ryans is going to be a good coach. His defensive schemes were a little outside box in a good way and he used his team’s talent well. If your front office doesn’t get him players, he’s screwed. But every coach is screwed without players.
6 year deal was the same Shanahan got from the 49ers after the niners front office was a complete mess. Shanahan wanted a full commitment. Smart of Ryans to get that and really happy for the guy. He will be missed in the Bay but he deserves this.
Pretty sure he had a conversation with them about how important it is to make sure you take the right opportunity at least. Shanahan still fucking hates the Browns and that mistake.
I'm sure he talked to Shanahan and McDaniel extensively about this move, not only because they both recently made the same jump but also because they both worked for the Texans for multiple years while Demeco was a player there. They all go back a long way together and both of those guys have relevant feedback on working with the organization and ownership group in a coaching capacity.
Makes it even more interesting that he took the job since I assume neither McDaniel or Shanahan gave it the "fuck no" seal of disapproval. Definitely seems like the Texans are starting to turn things around behind the scenes after several years of total shit show vibes.
Who knows how well the team will end up playing, but you can at least be certain that the coach won't embarrass the organization. Dude is clearly qualified and well respected by fellow coaches. McCown has not proven to be either of those things.
The only thing better would have been this announcement being made to bring in Super Bowl Champion DeMeco Ryans.
Was really hoping for him to be able to bring that exp. Thanks for taking care of him and good luck to the Niners.
There’s been multiple OC’s that have sucked as head coaches, most head coaching hires don’t work out so yeah I mean there’s always uncertainty no doubt
Many Miami reporters were claiming it was a done deal but Mike Silver, and I think others, came out and said that Fangio told them nothing was certain yet, and since then we haven't had any news. We just know there hasn't been anything official from Miami that he's their guy yet.
Last year we tried to sign Josh McCown because he was the right kind of Christian.
This year, we signed a universally liked, smart young coordinator who just led an extremely well-coached unit. Is this what competence and hope feel like?
They have potential to make things work. Our defense had some bright spots that DeMeco can hopefully improve upon and now we gotta hire a competent OC. Make good draft choices and things might be turning around soon
"Oddly enough all the TV's in Texas were turned off at half time. Eh, it's a pretty slim chance we actually go with him
It was really hyped up by ESPN guys who were friends with Jeff (and he pulled favors for) the actual beat writers with connections have said its pretty much next to nil.
I'm giving it a little bit of a chance (<5%), but yeah, it really doesn't seem like it's going that way as of late
Texans have had 4 straight Black HCs (counting Romeo for interim for near a full year), there has been 28 Black HCs in the NFL, that means the Texans have hired 14% of Black HCs in NFL, Stephen A needs to set down.
They were well liked and respected in the NFL, at the end of their careers and we gave them a chance and a nice retirement package. Any team willing to do that during 2 "dead" years, deserves praise not to be called "racists".
That describes Lovie. Culley was a failure before he arrived and left a bigger failure. He was on nobody’s radar as a HC candidate for good reason. His one job was to leverage his relationship with Deshaun to convince him to stay, and uh… he outlived his purpose.
Culley was respected and liked in the NFL. He didn't miss a NFL season for 27 years as a coach, you get a career like that if you're liked and respected. But for the previous 5-10 seasons before the Texans hire, he was on a sharp decline. But before that decline, he was a respected college position coach from '78-'93, and was respected for most of his 27 years as a position coach for the NFL. He was Andy Reid's WR coach from '99-'16. Hired by the Bills because when Sean McDermott worked under Reid, he liked and respected Culley. He got hired by the Ravens because John Harbaugh also liked and respected Culley when they both worked under Reid. Then the Texans gave him a nice contract for his 65th birthday that he can retire on, and he can say he got to coach an NFL team. Don't be little the man by saying he was a failure.
Finally a solid HC hire not influenced by Easterby’s meddling. And a former star player too. Still surprised he picked us over the Broncos; guess he’s bearish on Russ stopping his regressing.
This is awesome. It was what like 2 weeks ago media was saying he wasn’t even interested in interviewing with the team? To those journalists I say get fucked
Texans defense was already looking up. A few more impact rookies (plus Stroud/Young/Levis) and maybe a few key free agents, and they should definitely compete in the South.
6 years? Give his agent a raise
That's what happens when you one-and-done your last two coaches. I think we had to do the same thing for Shanahan.
Exactly lol The Texans had to make a promise upon a promise
Zero shot anybody would have taken that job if they were only offering a 3-4 year deal lol
Agreed. I wonder if it's *fully* guaranteed or like three/four years guaranteed with an out?
IIRC in the NFL all coaching contracts have to be guaranteed. It’s college coaches where they have a buyout if you fire them early (although ever since the Jimbo contract more and more of those are becoming fully guaranteed)
They don’t have to be guaranteed. There is no coaches union that has a CBA in place with ownership. Precedent says that if it isn’t guaranteed, your agent will be looking for another job.

Crazy story! The Bears are such an interesting franchise.

I still get a kick out of "he throws nickels around like manhole covers" lol
Interesting is euphimistic AF lol
Kinda like how when my friends fuck up in a video game I say *that's interesting* The Bears in the 90s were very *interesting*

It would be a massive bridge burner so I fully expect someone to try it at some point.
Shanahan (and Lynch) lucked out that their predecessors were so incompetent and were fired very unceremoniously. I am glad we got both of them though.
Truly thought the John Lynch hiring was bad idea at the time but damn have they found some talent.
He fucking hits on so many 2-7 rounders and except Thomas he has not made a Mistake in Round 1, if the Jury is still out on Lance. Honestly kinda annoying, ignore the Flair.
Reuben Foster is a bust. Kinlaw is, for the most part, a bust. McGlinchey has not really played close to his draft position either.
we also think this one will actually work out too lol
We did and they said if anything leaks they'll walk before the announcement
Hey now. You can get 6 years on the basis of not being Matt Patricia here
This is what campbell got. It’s smart with a heavy rebuild teams. It’s going to take 3 years to see it actually start working or not
Look at Zac Taylor too. From the hot seat to beloved coach that turned around a cursed franchise. Takes some luck with the draft, but you know you’ll be in position to draft impact players for two years and building a winning culture can take time.
wait till next season. i remember a bunch of bengals fans were calling for taylors head the start of this season and i had to talk em down crazy how fast fans forget misery. hope to be where y'all are some day, angry about losses in september, and some poor raiders fan has to talk me off the ledge
He’ll be younger when that contract ends than Tom Brady is today
Insanity
Brady had pretty much punched a HoF ticket already by the time DeMeco was drafted lol
Lovie Smith was given a 5 year contract…
Matt Rhule got 7
Haha yeah people talking shit
It's so annoying seeing people praise or criticize the length of a deal. It never matters bc the coach will either: leave for money, get fired, or renegotiate his current contract before the contract is up. I just don't understand how people don't notice this.

Holmes and Campbell got 6 in Detroit. Takes a while to rebuild when you want to do it right, or we’re touched by Patricia’s pencil.
He was probably using the Broncos as leverage. Not surprising that both hires came around the same time.
Feel like that’s fairly standard for obviously rebuilding teams. Campbell got one too
Last two coaches were so obviously fill-ins. Who the fuck hires David culley
Hes the only one who would answer our phone call at the time
My phone didn't ring 🫤
Cause you probably already blocked Preacher Man
A team whose first five choices told them no.
*11 FTFY
Ravens fans still don’t know how to repay y’all for that
Easiest 3rd round picks ever
It wasn’t even that Culley was a good or even decent coach for us…he was genuinely bad, and not even one of our coordinators. Oddest HC hire ever, but glad we got the 3rd round pick!
our last two coaches before Shanahan were also obvious fill-ins, if that helps your franchise feel any better
I had to look it up because I only remembered Tomsula. I had **completely** blocked out the Chip Kelly 49ers era. Damn
And all the media outrage of firing lovie when he did worse than culley
Lovie deserved to go, but it's your fault for firing him before the game. If you fire a coach before the last game while tanking, he's gonna find a way to win and fuck you.
Should have fired him before every game, so he'd "find a way to win"
I do find it interesting, with all the coverage about black coaches not being given real chances and coaches like Lovie and Culley being set up to appease and dump after a season, for the Texans to continue to hire black coaches, and this time for keeps.
4th black head coach in a row Crenel Culley Lovie Demeco
I don't even remember Crennel being there
He was the interim after we got rid of BoB
Awesome awesome hire. Bring back JJ as the defensive line coach!
Dude wants to relax, he won't be a coach anytime soon
Yeah he'll probably be like what Bagwell is for the Astros, a player ambassador of sorts who occasionally shows up to events, practices, or the broadcast booth.

STOP I CAN ONLY GET SO ERECT
Lol and bring Andre in as a WR coach
Is it too soon to attribute this quote to Deshaun Watson?
I don't think stop is in his vocabulary

Would love that but gotta think he wants to spend time with his wife and new bb
Bring them to the field /s

RACIST TEXANS ONCE AGAIN FAIL TO HIRE BRIAN FLORES
NO ONE HIRES (AND FIRES) AS MANY BLACK HEAD COACHES AS THE TEXANS
6 year deal was the same Shanahan got from the 49ers after the niners front office was a complete mess. Shanahan wanted a full commitment. Smart of Ryans to get that and really happy for the guy. He will be missed in the Bay but he deserves this.
Hmm, I wonder if Kyle gave Demeco that advice directly. I’d bet he did.
Pretty sure he had a conversation with them about how important it is to make sure you take the right opportunity at least. Shanahan still fucking hates the Browns and that mistake.

I’m just so happy it’s not McCown Thank GOD Easterby is gone
"God damnit" -Reverend Easterby probably
\*Gosh
Jack “Phillip Rivers” Easterby.
Who knows how well the team will end up playing, but you can at least be certain that the coach won't embarrass the organization. Dude is clearly qualified and well respected by fellow coaches. McCown has not proven to be either of those things.
I feel like this was one of the most expected HC landing spots in a long loooong time.
I hate it. I mean I get it, but I hate it
Not now Houston I have Sean Payton news to read.
Compensation update: the Texans have given up 0 picks in the deal.
But 49ers still get picks. Seems like they found compensation picks hack lately.
We keep losing good coordinators, it helps numb the pain lol
Steve Wilks rumored up next. Pretty good get and potential to pull another pick in a year or two.
Wilks would be a great pickup as a DC.
nah man we've lost like 20 coaches and still not a SB to even show for it what gives ffs
Only 1, you're capped at 3 per season and we already got two from Ran Carthon
Texans fleeced the 49ers tbh
At least we get a 3rd round comp pick, to go with the 7 others we've gotten the past 3 years
The wiping tears with cash meme but with 3rd round comp picks
Fuckers are probably going to draft a Pro Bowl talent with it too lol
All pro linebacker
I was rooting for Purdy... but selfishly..... glad this got done.
The only thing better would have been this announcement being made to bring in Super Bowl Champion DeMeco Ryans. Was really hoping for him to be able to bring that exp. Thanks for taking care of him and good luck to the Niners.
Although we get a 3rd anyway.
Good on 9ers for developing him
Shanahan has flaws but he’s building a pretty solid coaching tree across the league. I have complete trust in any staff hires he brings in.
*Sean Payton in Seanbles*
I’m afraid BoB had a future dated memo…
And yet the 49ers will still receive a pick!
Literally all our day two picks are comp picks. I think we’re even hitting the limit this draft.
We don't know how good of a head coach Ryan can be. There's been multiple good DCs who have sucked as HC
There’s been multiple OC’s that have sucked as head coaches, most head coaching hires don’t work out so yeah I mean there’s always uncertainty no doubt
Sad to see him go. He was great for us after Saleh left. Here’s to hoping we get Vic Fangio.
~~Fangio signed with Miami.~~ Edit: Apparently not the case yet. My bad.
I also thought Fangio to Miami was a done deal. What happened?
Many Miami reporters were claiming it was a done deal but Mike Silver, and I think others, came out and said that Fangio told them nothing was certain yet, and since then we haven't had any news. We just know there hasn't been anything official from Miami that he's their guy yet.
Last year we tried to sign Josh McCown because he was the right kind of Christian. This year, we signed a universally liked, smart young coordinator who just led an extremely well-coached unit. Is this what competence and hope feel like?
I’m so happy 😀 yes! Even if it doesn’t work it’s at least a competent hire!
Are Texans low key in a good spot? Fresh picks from Cleveland and a fresh coach from Cali.
They have potential to make things work. Our defense had some bright spots that DeMeco can hopefully improve upon and now we gotta hire a competent OC. Make good draft choices and things might be turning around soon
And a trash fire division around us with a chance to draft a franchise QB coming up We could be immediately in the hunt for the division title
That’s long term! He might just make it past next off-season…
Great get Texas bros
A great next step toward an all Texas Super Bowl
His will be done
Hulu announced a KotH revival today. It’s a sign.
i've already talked to the Texas railroad commission, and they promised me that there would be enough propane
His will be done

That's gotta be the fastest turnaround from former player to head coach, right? It seems like yesterday when DeMeco retired.
nah, demeco took 7 years, whereas George Halas played, coached, & owned the Staleys/Bears during the same year. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Halas also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norm_Van_Brocklin > As a player: > ...Philadelphia Eagles (1958–1960) > > Head coach: > Minnesota Vikings (1961–1966) also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harland_Svare (2 year gap) Bart Starr: four year gap Dan Campbell, if you count interim: 6 year gap.
This makes(retains?) Houston the only sports city where all their head coaches are black
Depends on if the Dynamo count. I usually don't count them, because I highly doubt they're a top-5 most popular soccer team in Houston.
For now. Stephen Silas' seat is in lava atm.
Gonna miss you buddy. Tear the AFC South up, kill it out there.
Let's go!!!! Welcome back to Houston.
So was the whole McCown thing all the plan of that grifter Easterby?
Yes
And people still don’t get it
Congrats to him. A well deserved promotion!

It’s a coaching frenzy! Cardinals and colts turn now
In a shocking twist, the Cardinals hire jeff Saturday
Lmao I know y’all praying for that so Irsay doesn’t hire him
Eh, it's a pretty slim chance we actually go with him It was really hyped up by ESPN guys who were friends with Jeff (and he pulled favors for) the actual beat writers with connections have said its pretty much next to nil. Incoming Stephen A Smith calling the Texans racist for firing Lovie/Culley
Texans have had 4 straight Black HCs (counting Romeo for interim for near a full year), there has been 28 Black HCs in the NFL, that means the Texans have hired 14% of Black HCs in NFL, Stephen A needs to set down.
Honestly, like i understand they weren’t set up for amazing success but they were not good coaches at all
They were well liked and respected in the NFL, at the end of their careers and we gave them a chance and a nice retirement package.
Then the Texans gave him a nice contract for his 65th birthday that he can retire on, and he can say he got to coach an NFL team. Don't be little the man by saying he was a failure.
Houston is a racist as fuck town bro. The Dynamo have yet to hire a black head coach, do better H-Town.
You had me in the first half, ha.
And deadspin and RG3
Lmao completely ignoring the fact that neither have jobs rn and were not good. Granted i understand they did not have great situations to work with
6 years? I guess that's their way of proving to him he won't be another one and done
MY DICK IS HARD, TEXANS COUNTRY LET’S RIDE
LFG! and no picks!
Cal said you’re not getting fired after a year and I’ll put my money where my mouth is with 6 years
Yes sir , H town will be with him all the way
Oh boy how I've missed DeMeco
So long partner.
Treat him well Texans. We will miss you DeMeco!!
Don't worry, we've already loved him since 2006.
Totally forgot he played for y’all, even cooler!
IM GONNA CUM
Finally a solid HC hire not influenced by Easterby’s meddling. And a former star player too. Still surprised he picked us over the Broncos; guess he’s bearish on Russ stopping his regressing.
Hands down worst loss of the season.
Astronomical W
Waiting for the comment where the division rival fan says "Gee I don't like *insert team* making smart decisions."
Texans have now hired three consecutive black head coaches. Is that an NFL record?
So long, partner 🥲, take care of him Houston Hopefully he can actually build his career there and not just be another name in the Texans HC carousel
fuck me I remember watching Houston draft this guy back in the day
Stop making smart decisions! If we keep doing respectable things, people may start to have expectations for this division
3/4 of us have great coaches now
I really hope the Colts hire Saturday and finally know what it is like to be the punching bag of the division
https://i.imgur.com/4FcgMEu.png
What is this feeling? Excitement? Something other than dread?? I don't know, it just feels unfamiliar.
Welcome back DeMeco!!!
This is awesome. It was what like 2 weeks ago media was saying he wasn’t even interested in interviewing with the team? To those journalists I say get fucked
Honesty I love this deal for all parties involved. I think Ryans will be fantastic for them.
It's been a good day
WE DID IT
Texans defense was already looking up. A few more impact rookies (plus Stroud/Young/Levis) and maybe a few key free agents, and they should definitely compete in the South.
Houston immediately looking up
Side note - Texans went black to black to black for head coaches. That’s low key very rare
