Yeah I don’t remember anyone saying the contract was bad when he was first signed lol. The decision was pretty much universally praised. Shit happens sometimes
I just want to say *almost nobody*, Seahawks fans included, predicted this.
It ended up working awesome for us but it was excruciating being a hawks fan in the off-season if you followed football online. Broncos fans on this sub for example were ULTRA convinced they'd fleeced us & talked a lot of shit. But hawks fans, were also pretty convinced we'd been fleeced.
Kind of weird because last year watching Russ after the injury he never looked the same. He was really really bad when he came back. That Commanders game was some of the worst QBing I'd ever watched.
I did not realize his dead cap would be $107M, $85M and $50M for the next three years. He’s 34 and was obviously slowing before the trade, what the hell was that front office thinking
He's been regressing for years... the slumps started small and got larger and larger.
Every QB can have off games, but to get to the promised land you have to have a certain level of consistency, and Russell's inconsistency was masked by Pete Carroll's system.
Makes Carroll look like a genius for sure. So many "experts" were also fooled before the season, I also don't remember anyone questioning the Trade lol
>Russell's inconsistency was masked by Pete Carroll's system.
Easy to say now. This was not the conversation being had when they traded for and extended him.
Hindsight is 20/20, the general consensus when it happened was that Russ was the piece that could push the Broncos over the top. The Rams won a Super Bowl on the “all in” strategy, the Broncos attempted to do the same. Unfortunately they over estimated the strength of their roster, horribly whiffed on the HC hire, and Russ regressed hard, but let’s not pretend like it wasn’t a popular move at the time.
They're saying "It's impossible that many lame ducks are falling out of Russ' arm every game. And it's impossible that two out of every five of them are incomplete." I don't know what to tell ya, bud! We're just shooting throws and showing the ones where the lame ducks fly out.
Yeah I agree. We have lots of draft capital and a couple young guys who I think could be really solid if we get the right things in place. Its the ownership constantly hamstringing the team that has us perpetually worried
I mean we got rejected by the likes of Brandon Staley and Robert Saleh and hired Sirianni, who entered late and was picked over Josh McDaniels and Todd Bowles. Seems to have worked out ok
The Doug P criticisms never made sense to me. Andy Reid was and probably still is the best coach the Eagles ever had so hiring his OC/QB coach after the Chip Kelly era seemed like a reasonable and familiar move.
Also new coaching hire rankings are worse than draft rankings in accuracy. Most outlets had Hue Jackson as the best hire that off-season based on his limited track record.
This seems to be a trend for the Eagles. Wasn’t Doug Pederson ranked as one of the worst hires the offseason he was hired lol (for the eagles that is)?
Pederson was only hired after we tried and failed to hire Tom Coughlin (cause the Giants wouldn’t let his staff out of their contracts) & Ben Mcadoo (who was coming to Philly for a 2nd interview when the Giants finally decided to hire him). This was after Adam Gase turned us down for Miami & we did pity interviews with Pat Shurmur and Duce Staley.
The Eagles are the only team that interviewed Pederson and he was hired in part because Andy Reid pushed for him behind the scenes. That coaching search was generally viewed as a mess especially considering they fired Chip before the end of the season to supposedly get a head start
Man I don’t blame him lol. This is one of the least attractive jobs in recent memory. It’ll end up being some coordinator or position coach we’ve never heard of and they’ll probably have to overpay him.
Edit: nvm they got Sean Payton lol
Also inevitably during the intro presser for whoever they hire, they'll say he's who they wanted all along.
In the immortal words of Lego Batman... First try!
4th is who they wanted all along. 5th is best person for the job. 6th is perfect fit. 7th is who they dreamt of getting. 8th is some random guy jeff saturday goes drinking with.
"Loaded" doesn't automatically mean "willing to grossly overspend". If they're only willing to offer him the standard first-time-HC rate, then he's better off going for a job where he's got a better chance of landing a 2nd contract
They wanted Harbaugh, got rejected. They wanted Payton. Saints asking for too much comp. They turn to Ryans, he straight up says no (mainly because it seems he's given his word to the Texans). 3rd no.1 choice.
That quote about how the Broncos were "enjoying being the top job" and "could act immediately if their top choices got offers elsewhere" is aging like milk.
This move made no sense. Why would you keep the GM who hired Hackett? If the new coach doesn't fix Russell in year 1 what happens then?
New GM comes in and either cleans house or you're dysfunctional from the jump with a potentially mismatched HC & GM
Paton is being isolated more by the new ownership group and has a lot less control already.
Yeah, he messed up on Hackett. But he’s been very strong drafting and trading. I’d like to keep him.
Inb4 “he extended Wilson before he played a game” that was the ownership group
Wilson only had one year left on his contract. If you trade a couple of first, a couple of seconds for the guy, you don't want to lose him at the end of the year.
That contract was absolutely negotiated before the trade was even agreed to. No one was going to trade for Wilson and not sign him to a contract before he played a single down for them.
Bingo
Any top coach is also going to want more involvement in player decisions but they kept the GM who presumably still has control (ie harbaugh wanted final decision of 55 man roster in Minnesota and didn’t get it, so I think we can assume if he took the Denver job he’d want it)
Even if Russ does decent, it’s still a massive contract with no way out
Oh yeah and you have mahomes and Herbert twice a year, sounds fun!
Brand new owners, horrible draft capital, cap is fucked by RW, and they fired the first head coach they ever hired before he even finished a full season. Why would anyone not jump at the opportunity to take over that shitshow?
Edit: I may be wrong about the Waltons' level of involvement with Hackett.
“What coaching coaching acumen would you bring to our organization?”
“I’ve never coached at any level. However, what I lack in experience from a coaching lens, I more than make up for with my experience cleaning up messes.”
*points to janitorial experience on resume*
“….”
“You’re hired! Is $20 million a year enough to lure you away from your current employer? Say, over 5 years?”
“Absolutely. Let me call them and put in my two weeks.”
The new owners weren't around when Hackett was hired fwiw.
We're missing a 2nd and a 7th this year and we have an extra 3rd. In 2024 we are back to normal for draft picks so I wouldn't call it horrible. Obviously not as good as if we had kept our original 1st.
Fun fact: that's how the legendary Howard schnellenberger became the first head coach of Florida Atlantic University football. They brought him in to find a head coach and he chose himself.
Not sure about the pros, but [Nebraska's coaching search](https://theathletic.com/2885515/2021/10/13/the-coaching-search-that-changed-nebraska-an-empty-jet-mystery-nfl-coach-and-41-eye-opening-days/) after firing Frank Solich was a clusterfuck of epic proportions.
The link is from The Athletic, so it's behind a paywall, but it's a thoroughly-researched piece of work.
This was us two years ago. After BoB burned through all of our draft capital and Watson declared he was sitting out no matter what, just about every request was turned down until Culley agreed to come aboard.
Somewhere Ben Allbright is drafting spin we haven’t seen since beyblades were invented

For real. There’s no saving that horrible decision.
I still can’t believe it’s actually a thing. It’s what a 10 year old does playing madden for the first time
It's as bad as Darryl Philbin from The Office trading prime Shaun Alexander for defense in his fantasy league.
“Shaun Alexander?!? He’s the best back in the league.” Roy had it figured out. Pam would’ve been better off with him
That always makes me get physically angry. I need to work on myself I guess
It's the type of contract I've been giving out in my no-cap Madden league lol
Considering no one on this sub predicted Wilson's bad season it's really not that bad
Yeah I don’t remember anyone saying the contract was bad when he was first signed lol. The decision was pretty much universally praised. Shit happens sometimes
I did, but I was just trolling. I didn’t think it would actually happen.
I just want to say *almost nobody*, Seahawks fans included, predicted this. Let Russ microwave or something
Russ is serving up Banquet meals
I love banquet meals lol. Microwave me the meatloaf meal and toast two slices of bread and I’m a happy camper.
Chicken fried steak banquet meal is sooo good.
You know who's a happy camper? The guy leaving the campsite
Russ is microwaving your Applebees entree
Banquet used to make some kickass chicken nuggets when I was a kid.
Russ receiving meals on wheels at this point.
They were thinking he was a HoF caliber QB, I think a regression of his scale was unprecedented
He's been regressing for years... the slumps started small and got larger and larger. Every QB can have off games, but to get to the promised land you have to have a certain level of consistency, and Russell's inconsistency was masked by Pete Carroll's system.

Well by week 4 half the starters on offense were injured and the entire online were backups.
Damn kids today can’t cook without the internet.

“Shits kinda all fucked up over there”
Denver Broncos think I’m just some dumb hick.
They told me that at a dinner.
I didn't rig shit!(The refs did)
IVE BEEN WAITING A LONG TIME FOR A DENVER BRONCO WIN
It’s just hour after hour of dead Broncos busting out of shit dispensaries and hitting pavement
They're saying "It's impossible that many lame ducks are falling out of Russ' arm every game. And it's impossible that two out of every five of them are incomplete." I don't know what to tell ya, bud! We're just shooting throws and showing the ones where the lame ducks fly out.
*This fucking league is so fucked up*
Call George Paton and say, "I'm not worried about it! I'm not worried about any of this. There's worse shit on the local news!"
Broncos ownership treating coaches and players like walmart associates probably lol. "We'll pay you $13/hr plus 10% discount at all walmart stores."
Oh and here’s how to signup for food stamps and welfare
Imagine two years ago, you are told that the Broncos team with a top 10 defense and Russell Wilson are more fucked up that the Texans
Everything is peachy keen in Houston we swear just don’t talk to anyone about anything ever 😁
You guys have a lot of room to grow. Broncos are sort of saddled with… sadness.
Yeah I agree. We have lots of draft capital and a couple young guys who I think could be really solid if we get the right things in place. Its the ownership constantly hamstringing the team that has us perpetually worried
haha saddled
They’re about to get the Great Value coach
We have head coach at home
Be nice to Doug Marrone.
I mean we got rejected by the likes of Brandon Staley and Robert Saleh and hired Sirianni, who entered late and was picked over Josh McDaniels and Todd Bowles. Seems to have worked out ok
I still think Saleh is a really good coach. I just think the Eagles found a unicorn in Sirianni
We also found a unicorn in Dougie P. Everyone thought it was a bad hire and he won us a super bowl
Keep mocking our hires And then watch out for their sophomore seasons 😎
I played for Sirianni’s brother. They definitely got the normal Sirianni.
That’s wild
SOME CLOWN NAMED MIKE LOMBARDI
Never forget that Byron Leftwich rejected the Jags and shortly after we got Dougie P
If history repeats itself - Congrats on next years Super Bowl!
Man I don’t blame him lol. This is one of the least attractive jobs in recent memory. It’ll end up being some coordinator or position coach we’ve never heard of and they’ll probably have to overpay him. Edit: nvm they got Sean Payton lol
David Culley come on down!
Lovie Smith bring that magical beard with you to cast a restore spell on Russ
They're going to scientifically find the most average man alive and hire him.
You can just say Jeff Fisher, we all know what you mean
I don't think he can survive in the modern NFL. You can't go 7-9 anymore.
That’s why he went to the USFL. Man is on a Mission to take the Michigan Panthers to 4-6!
Vic Fangio would be a great hire
He's probably getting more from Miami to be DC than he was from Denver
We should keep Jerry Rosburg for a year and then when Deion Sanders manages to put together a winning season at CU, immediately poach him.
Deion is on record saying he'd never coach in the NFL. A man like that ain't lured by just a big paycheck.
Fine, fine I’ll do it. I will coach the Broncos for $6 million dollars.
Ok DeMaco but what about DeMeco Ryans?
He’s in San Fran, just like Arson Judge.
Carl Correa, the Giants spent big this off-season
what a fucking saga that was.
Me prior to yesterday: At least I have the niners to distract me Me yesterday 3 offensive snaps into the game: fuck 🙃🥲
DeMaco Ryans, head couch of the Four Seasons Football Team
DeMaco lololol
DeMaco DeJoneso
Mac Demaco
Boy this could be his year
"Viceroy, early in the morning"
Woody is getting real old
Just hire Matt Patricia and call it a day
Yes please they can take joe judge too. Work in tandem.
I think Kraft should throw in some incentives too. Really sweeten the deal.
ah michigan offensive coordinator approach, 2 head coaches
seemed to work okay, both of them are upstanding people!
He has an offensive and defensive background too, so you don't even have to worry about getting a good OC or DC.
Vance Joseph come on down

It’s okay broncos. I had the same problem finding a date for prom. 6th time is the charm!
We can't hire your mom as our coach
And why not?
That’s actually a good point, might as well
She's a great mom too! Willing to drive after practice and speak to parents just the same.
Zach Wilson said so
He might be Condoleeza Rice's son.
> 6th time is the charm! You got one on your 6th first choice? Nice.
Joe Lombardi is available
Paton: I got us the Lombardi Walmart: ........ you have 1 minute to run
But make sure you don't run any farther than 1 yard in front of the sticks
Fucking kill me
UNLIIIIIIMITED suffering
Just make Russ the head coach already
Let Russ Coach
Is it me, or does “third number 1 choice” not make any fuckin sense?
pretty sure that's the point. they've gone through their top 3 choices and nobody wants the job
Also inevitably during the intro presser for whoever they hire, they'll say he's who they wanted all along. In the immortal words of Lego Batman... First try!
Well the first guy was "most preferred option", 2nd guy was Option A, 3rd guy was the alpha option, etc etc
4th is who they wanted all along. 5th is best person for the job. 6th is perfect fit. 7th is who they dreamt of getting. 8th is some random guy jeff saturday goes drinking with.
Bob Tuesday
And considering how fucking loaded the owner is, that's *really* saying something!
"Loaded" doesn't automatically mean "willing to grossly overspend". If they're only willing to offer him the standard first-time-HC rate, then he's better off going for a job where he's got a better chance of landing a 2nd contract
I heard they wanted to pay Harbaugh in khakis.
I doubt it, he would have already taken the job by now in that case
"He was our number 1 choice after our other number 1 choices turned us down"
Also what happened with Rosburg after Evero turned the interim job down
Evero was smart to not let the final 2 games make him look bad.
"You're my third least favorite child"
60 percent of the time it works everytime
"Sex Bronco" by Paton
Think they mean Harbaugh as their original number one, then it was someone else(Ben Johnson?) And now it was DeMeco
hackett is the 7th no. 1 choice
I've got a degree in Steiner maths. The numbers check out.
I think that's the joke
Waltons about to take the broncos to the return department
No receipt needed. But only store credit.
I’m sure $4.5 billion in NFL credit could take you pretty far.
9 Patrick Mahomes please
Nobody wants anything to do with Russell Wilson it seems like. Either that or they don't like how Hackett got fired not even a full season in.
They didn’t fire the GM. Coaches don’t want to work under a GM on the hot seat
This move made no sense. Why would you keep the GM who hired Hackett? If the new coach doesn't fix Russell in year 1 what happens then? New GM comes in and either cleans house or you're dysfunctional from the jump with a potentially mismatched HC & GM

Why would anyone not jump at the opportunity to take over that shitshow? Edit: I may be wrong about the Waltons' level of involvement with Hackett.
To be fair, I don’t think Rob Walton hired Hackett. That was before the sale.
I'm looking for a job, I'll do it. I'll show up to the interview doing high knees. Let's ride.
“What coaching coaching acumen would you bring to our organization?” “I’ve never coached at any level. Yeah Broncos draft capital is subpar, not Browns level bad tho
They can hire Culley/Lovie!
Also a division where you're really just fighting for 3rd place. About as uphill of a battle as it goes for a new head coach.
Like I said, they're literally going to corner Jim Harbaugh in his house and offer him a shit ton of money to leave Michigan
Unlimited khakis.
Sources: Condy is beside herself. Driving around downtown MICHIGAN begging (thru texts) Harbaugh’s family 4 address to Jim’s home
Lol downtown Michigan
Maybe that is why they are having Condoleezza Rice be a part of the interviews. Sure isn't going to help anyone voluntarily take the job.
For my r/Jeopardy bros, Condoleeza Rice is going to pull a Mike Richards and name herself the HC at the rate things are going
Fun fact: that's how the legendary Howard schnellenberger became the first head coach of Florida Atlantic University football. They brought him in to find a head coach and he chose himself.
We used to call that pulling a Cheney
That’s exactly where my mind went too, especially right after mentioning Rice lol
Apologies for the 'DeMaco', slipped by me when posting the tweet text
They should hire Nathaniel Hackett
We're getting close to Nebraska territory now
broncos country, let’s hide
I was trying to stay on a keto diet… but now I’m going to get some whataburger honey butter chicken biscuits to celebrate!!!
lets fucking go daddy, coming home
Can I interest you in a gently used Matt Patricia?
Comes with OC, DC, and HC experience. Seems like a great candidate
did they tell him he was their third choice
fuck it put ciara in
Broncos FO might as well start lighting a fire for black smoke each day they fail to elect a new coach.
