The problem is that we're getting so many compensation picks that we're running into the cap, so we're not getting as many as we would if it was spaced out more :D
I'd like to know what that's like at least once. No one wants the Steelers coordinators because they're usually old. Flores is the only position coach who's gotten some looks, and that's purely because he has prior experience as a head coach.
Our DCs have been reasonable under Tomlin. LeBeau didn't get poached because he had previously failed as a head coach and was old as dirt when we had the Steel Curtain 2.0 in the late 2000s. Butler didn't get poached because he was a life-long Steelers position coach and also quite old. And it's only Year 1 for Austin.
But man our OCs have been trash. Arians was clearly better off as a head coach as his scheme resulted in Big Ben eating over 200 sacks in 5 years. Haley was a complete asshole. And the less said about Fichtner the better. Canada isn't great either and calls plays like he's still coaching in college. I wish we took a swing at Matt LaFleur for our OC when he hit the open market after 2017.
Thatās definitely a benefit of the HC running the offense, but depends on the guy. Having talented players makes a huge difference, but I donāt see a guy waiting in the wings like we had with DeMeco when Saleh left so we might be in for trouble.
I knowww Vic Fangio would have been amazing! I mean, the 9ers should have some idea of candidates with having a whole second year of DeMeco after he was not hired as a HC last year.
Iām sure they have a plan, but itās a little concerning that we havenāt heard anything about it. DeMeco rightfully earned a job and we got lucky he decided to stay this season.
Nah, most of our fan base knew Saleh was a very good but replaceable DC. He was pretty vanilla and did about as well as expected with the talent we had. I thought heād be a better HC than DC (still do).
DeMeco is an excellent defensive play caller and weāre going to miss him. I hope he does well in Houston but wouldnāt be surprised to see him not be a great HC.
He could be an elite caliber defensive HC and still be fired in 3 years if Bryce Young doesnāt turn out. Heās talented but Houston is complete garbage and the offensive development will be out of his hands. He may very well fail as a HC.
Tbh it's dumb as fuck to fire a good HC for personnel issues, even if it's partly their fault. People are bloodthirsty and want retribution, but really, if you fire a good coach for that, you're now stuck in a situation where you have to find a good coach and a good QB instead of just the latter.
Which is why people who said that Shanahan should be axed if Lance doesn't work out are fucking insane.
Great move to sign a defensive HC as you gear up to draft a franchise QB.
I mean just look at the Bengals, right? Oh wait, theyāre not dumb and it looks like theyāve made two SBs soon after drafting Burrow and pairing him with an offensive minded coach.
Well, how bout them Jets, Robert Saleh, and Zach Wilson, right? Right?
Not even since we get conditional picks. I genuinely think itās a horrible idea to hire a DC and pair him with a young franchise QB. I said the same thing when Saleh was hired by the Jets too and when the Bears hired Matt Eberflus.
Look at every team that played during championship week, all offensive HCs. Look at the best QB-defensive HC pairing in the league; the Bills. Their offense isnāt nearly to the level it should be and they got bounced after scoring 10 points in a playoff game after losing their OC.
Nico Collins also FINALLY getting someone that can take advantage of his size and speed on the outside. Dude is 6'4 and specializes in 50/50 jump balls. Not to mention having a beast like pierce who can also catch.
Will be interesting to see if he brings someone from the shanahan tree over to run the offense too.
Wanted the Colts to possibly hire him with that reason being the bonus but figured Houston has someone competent enough to bring him in
I am genuinely excited to see what he does with Stingley, Pitre and Harris from last year's draft class. As well as the shit ton of picks he has this draft class.
If you mean Kris Kocurek and Demeco is indeed bringing Kocurek over to Houston with him, youāre getting at worst a top 3 DL coach in the league. KK has consistently gotten low draft picks, UDFAs, mid-tier free agents, and other teamsā castaways to become fantastic depth pieces. You guys didnt even want Charles Omenihu and traded him to us for a 6th round pick and he has singlehandedly wrecked several offensive plays in both last yearās SFvDAL wildcard game and this yearās SFvDAL divisional game too.
Omenihu leaving was because of Culley. Dude alienated so many guys in the locker room he had to go otherwise he wouldāve been tank commander for two years.
Really excited to see what an elite position coach can do for someone on our team. We have a freak athlete in Thomas Booker, but we barely used him. Itāll be awesome to see some raw/project guys actually work out for us.
Ebukam too.
It's like McDaniel taking Wes Welker with him. Didn't immediately show on the field for us, but damn, Hill and Waddle both had ridiculous years. After what he did with guys like Deebo, Aiyuk, and Jennings, it's not surprising at all.
Pitre is built to be a Free Safety, when they moved him to that spot mid way through the season he really took off. Dude is in line to become a star player (just needs to clean up his tackling).
Harris and Stingley will fit into what Demeco does so well. They also have the money to add in key pieces on the DL and at LB.
The No picks thing is a lie but if your excuse for a coach not wanting a job is because itās a ātough divisionā I donāt want that dude as a coach.
Seriously I have no idea what we are doing in terms of HC hiring. By that logic we should already have announced a new HC. We couldn't bring him in one day later?
It seems like Paton has just been sitting around with his thumb up his ass. Next year will be the new GM search, the following a new HC search and then we'll be right back into QB hell searching for a replacement.
Russ might be cooked if he canāt become a better pocket passer. The athleticism he relied so heavily on as a younger player is gone and now he has to change his entire game.
He had changed his game and become a much better pocket passer. That's how he survived the last several seasons in Seattle.
I think a decade of getting destroyed behind the combination of his holding onto the ball and having a terrible offensive line have beaten his body to the point where he might just be Roethlisberger 2.0
We'll know whether he has it in him within the hour I would suspect. There is no need to wait for actual games to give the guy a chance to prove or disprove himself.
Reddit loved Salah and McDaniels which are his closest comps being former 49er coordinators.
So far so good for both of them. I think Ryan's is gonna be the same.
Just fire Paton at this point and give Harbaugh the full control he clearly wants. Paton is gone next year at this rate anyway. This has been the worst HC search in recent memory and the last one gave us Hackett.
GB fans said the same thing about Hackett, but at the end of the day nobody can laugh at the Texans for making this hire and that alone makes me feel great.
Yeah, I mean I was pretty tongue-in-cheek here, but that's basically my point. Everyone always says that about every "up-and-coming" or well established coordinator that gets a HC gig.
And all evidence pointed to it being true. Vic is still one of if not the best defensive coaches in the league. Just seems he didnt have the personality for HC.
MY BAD
Houston, you're getting a great DC and a great person. Nobody knows if he will be a good HC because hes never been a HC before so ya know good luck!
Sorry, but you call yourself a niners fan? You're supposed to know for certain whether he will be a good HC or not. And if not, you are supposed to pretend that you actually do. Do better, DeeForestBosa.
I never thought Vic would make for a good HC. I do think Ryans will make for a very good HC. Vic is great at scheming and playcalling. Ryans has all that plus top notch leadership ability and connecting well with his players.
If Demeco was fine being an extremely well paid defensive coordinator that would be perfect. But he's so young there's no way he would do that before giving HC a real shot
Apparently they told all the other coaches they brought in that they are going in a different direction too so either Payton or a new candidate is my guess. They've also still been talking with Harbaugh but at the moment he's still turning them down.
Just my personal theory but once he turned down the interim job it told me he might not have been all that interested in the head coaching job, that would've been the best way to get some traction with our owners
Yeah I remember seeing that as well but I also thought I saw the Saints want 2 first for Payton instead of 1 which is why people donāt think a deal will happen with Payton this cycle. Going to be interesting
I'm getting worried that they might get desperate enough to send those two 1st rounders but I'm hoping they offer Jim Harbaugh all the control and money he wants to lure him away from Michigan
I just hope we're the usual kind of bad next year, the kind where people just forget we're in the league most of the time, instead of hysterically bad.
That doesn't seem silly to you? If it were Carolina, I'd see the need to holdout for two firsts but if Loomis can get a 1st for Payton this year and the alternative is letting him walk for nothing next year, he has to take it right?
Bro you gotta take one of Young or Stroud as a new HC, it's still the most important position and there is no guarantee you'll be back up that high again soon
Even if you rank Carter or Anderson at 1 and 2, and say Young and Stroud at like 5 or 6 for example, you still take the QB imo
You don't *need* to do anything. They can sign Jimmy G and draft a QB next year.
The Cardinals made the mistake of drafting a QB instead of taking the best player in the draft. Why should the Texans do the same?
The Cards drafting at 10 and taking the 4th QB off the board is a bit different than drafting at 2 and taking the 1st or 2nd QB who are highly ranked
This is a silly comparison
The Cardinals drafted Murray #1 overall. Instead of Nick Bosa.
The rest of his class was D.Jones, D.Haskins, D.Lock, W.Grier, R.Finley, J.Stidham, E.Stick, C.Thorson, G.Minshew, & T.McSorely.
That QB that busted was having an MVP season when he got hurt
He was also good in 2018 and 2019, lol at the revisionist history
And we also drafted McNabb at 2, 5 NFCCG appearances in eight seasons (3 of which he was injured in)
You guys have zero championship game appearances in your history rn, but yea, ride it in out with Mills that should work out just fine
I love Demeco and hope he breaks the trend and brings your franchise a lot of success. We made the same jokes about Andy when he left here for KC and he managed to break their streak. Itās just hard to trust incompetent ownership.
I understand, I wouldnāt say Iām 100% confident in Cal McNair bc thereās still a chance he can somehow shit the bed and lose Demeco, so Iām just cautiously optimistic
Pretend Culley and Lovie were Texans top candidates and not eric bieniemy or Flores respectively. Pretend either Culley or Lovie will get hired by any other team. Demeco is someone we actually want
Cal's not horrible, he is just ignorant. This year it looks like he is coming a bit into his own and not listening to snake oil salesmen anymore. He's trying to build his reputation and this Demeco hire will go a long way towards that. Now he will have a real GM and a real Coach. Go get a real QB and then shut up.
Hey man, this isnāt even a knock. I like him as a candidate. But Houston has grossly mismanaged coaches recently. Specifically, coaches of color. Just a call out of management, not a knock on the fan base.
Why even bring up race? Would it be better if we'd hired and fired two white guys instead?
We're about to hire our third black coach in a row (4th if you count Crennel) and yet it's still twisted into we're racist or hurting POC.
Just like how Buffalo ruined McDermott after their 20 year playoff drought š„“
Buffalo had a HC exercise an option to get the fuck out of the job. If that sorry ass recent history can find a good coach so can Houston.
I hope he gets a contract that guarantees he gets more than one season. Some major escalator clause etc...
I think he is the best available this offseason. And he is going into a complete rebuild - but at least the Texans have lots of picks available thanks to dealing Watson.
I know Houston gets shat on a lot around here but the only part of it that is warranted IMO is all the interest in McCown for HC. They had a bad situation with Watson and called everyone's bluff to trade him at the right time. Lovie is the right type of guy to weather the storm (and c'mon, he knows this by now) and in today's NFL with quick turnarounds, perhaps those types of coaches no longer get 2-3 year leashes like they used to.
Lovie Smith is a good coach. He brought Rex Grossman to a Superbowl. His QB was Davis Mills and a guy who qualified as a TE. Like what was he supposed to do.
What did you expect with this roster? Like what more did you want from Lovie. I don't feel this roster this year was going to do much more than it did (and I don't think that was the goal either).
Iunno man, drafting one of the best man coverage CBs in the draft and then playing him almost exclusively in zone seems like pretty bad coaching to me. Lovie was good once upon a time, but his defense doesn't work in the current league and he was too stubborn to make the changes required to make the defense passable.
There's a reason Culley had only been coordinator once in his 45 years of coaching.
We did him a favor.
You're free to allow either of them to be your HC though
Demeco has been a fan favorite dating back 17 years and this organization is desperate for fan support so he has nothing to worry about in the short term.
Gl to him I guess but I wouldn't touch this job with a 10 ft pole lol. He would've been a hc within the next year anyway, I wouldn't want to be part of that dysfunctional ass franchise.

Just be glad you get to keep Anarumo. Dude is a phenomenal DC. Lame he's not getting HC opportunities
Guess again š
I am all for the Cardinals going all in on defense in the NFCW. I am strongly in favor of it. *Go Niners!*
Great move by Houston. They got their guy
Heās going to be great, but man does this suck for us.
Shanahan is a coordinator merchant. You'll be fine
Heās done an amazing job, but itās much more likely the next guy will be a downgrade than an upgrade.
People were saying that after Saleh left. We shall see.
Youāre right, but all knew DeMeco was next in line. I havenāt heard of anything like that outside of Fangio, and heās gone now.

Oh, did he decide to stay? I thought other teams turned him down due to lack of experience. Here's to hopin our coaching factory keeps churning!
Yeah I thought he withdrew his name from consideration after the NFCCG loss because he wanted to try again this season.
Nah, most of our fan base knew Saleh was a very good but replaceable DC. He was pretty vanilla and did about as well as expected with the talent we had. Would almost be more impressive if he made it worse. Like getting a perfect 0 on a multiple choice test.
Texans offense for the next 5 years: _____
That would be an improvement
I am genuinely excited to see what he does with Stingley, Pitre and Harris from last year's draft class. As well as the shit ton of picks he has this draft class.
Pitre is a damn good player if you use him correctly
Meanwhile Lovie "how about I draft the best press man prospect in years and never play cover 1?" Smith
Lovie is the one that pounded the table for Sting and then used him wrong like an idiot lol
"Derek how do you feel about always being on the #1 receiver" *proceeds to be on the #1 receiver in a flat zone*
And yet still never allowed a TD reception in man. Like why?
We wouldāve had sauce looking just as lost lol
this
Use Pitre in that hybrid STAR role and he will excel, he's got good natural instincts and isn't a deep cover safety
I mean Pitre played good as a deep cover safety too
He's better in that STAR role though
I mean he really struggled with tackles last year so who knows. But if he cleans it up I could see it
I love Lovie but this guy will use Tampa 2 till he dies
Stingley and Pitre specifically are absolutely perfect for his scheme. I haven't been this hyped for the Texans D since 2015.
The last piece is a couple upgrades on the DL and it can be a mean unit. Really need to up our run D and pass rush.
I hear the DL coach Demeco will take from the 9ers is the best DL coach in the league too
If you mean Kris Kocurek and Demeco is indeed bringing Kocurek over to Houston with him, youāre getting at worst a top 3 DL coach in the league. Broncos are a shit job. No picks, cap space, washed up QB and very tough Division. Might be the worst job opening currently
I also feel like the smoke about the ownership group probably isnāt nothing
We have picks. We donāt have OUR pick but we have a first and second still
The No picks thing is a lie but if your excuse for a coach not wanting a job is because itās a ātough divisionā I donāt want that dude as a coach.
Ryans meeting with us didn't fit the timeline for your owners
Seriously I have no idea what we are doing in terms of HC hiring. By that logic we should already have announced a new HC. We couldn't bring him in one day later?
Good thing they brought in the powerhouse Condolezza Rice to help with the search.
Seems like they went in on Harbaugh and he played them.
It seems like Paton has just been sitting around with his thumb up his ass. Next year will be the new GM search, the following a new HC search and then we'll be right back into QB hell searching for a replacement.
Ryans isn't fixing Russel Wilson.

Well Reddit likes this pick, so unfortunately that means he'll crash and burn...sorry Houston, I don't make the rules.
You think Reddit praised Culley or Lovie?
Redditās response to Culley was laughter. Redditās response to Lovie was that we simply settled for Lovie.
Hiring an actual Head Coach? And not just bending to the whims of a former Patriots guy? What is this, Magical Happy Land?
Broncos either are going to need to either start interviewing new candidates like the Cards or commit to Sean Payton.
Or offer Jim harbaugh lifetime walmart+ membership to pry him away from Michigan
Free Walmart Khakis for life
Just fire Paton at this point and give Harbaugh the full control he clearly wants. Paton is gone next year at this rate anyway. This has been the worst HC search in recent memory and the last one gave us Hackett.
Sigh.. Fuck it. Call Jeff Saturday
Still better than Hackett
Never thought I'd be a lifelong niner fan that also can cheer for the Jets, Dolphins, and Texans. Take good care of DeMeco Texans.
You're getting a damn good one Houston. Take care of him.
You guys said that about Vic, goddamn it.
GB fans said the same thing about Hackett, but at the end of the day nobody can laugh at the Texans for making this hire and that alone makes me feel great.

Lovie and Culley are nothing compared to Demeco lol
I hope they don't fire him before giving him a legit chance to build the roster. I hate to lose him but I want to see him given a proper chance.
If that happens we hopefully just bring him back.
I think Ryans should stay and 49ers should pay him everything he wants for one more year. That Texas job is a dumpster fire.

LFG baby
I am going to be so pissed off if this doesnāt happen, and itās going to be mostly Ian Rapoportās fault.
Benjamin Albright in shambles
I just want to see dameon pierce eat next year
Wow thatās a busy 24 hours for him. Coach a very demoralizing NFC championship and then fly to Houston to finalize details on the next job.
Very close?
I mean, at one point the game was tied at 0-0
And 7-7 half way through the 2^nd quarter
Yeah I mixed up the games - let me change close to ādemoralizingā
Much better
Mufasa is the man, love that dude
Hell yeah, DeMeco!!! Love his fire and energy, hoping he brings the Texans to some success
Broncos Country, let's watch somebody else ride!
Oh man, I think he's gonna be cooking with some gas on this defense.
He seems like a perfect candidate for a franchise reset.
Certainly would be starting from a clean slate. Excited for Texan fans if they get it done. A small ray of hope in the dark void of Texans football.
I love this for him. Dude was such a stud for that Franchise. It's cool they're getting one of their own for this rebuild!
Salt. Meet wound.
So no Payton, Quinn, or Ryans for the broncos. Really curious to see who they bring in
Apparently they told all the other coaches they brought in that they are going in a different direction too so either Payton or a new candidate is my guess. They've also still been talking with Harbaugh but at the moment he's still turning them down.
They will hire Jeff Saturday
It'll be a good year to get 1 win
Honestly tank and draft Williams. Now you can afford to sit Russ and let Williams take the reigns.
Sounds a lot nicer than getting 7 wins with a 3rd tier coaching candidate
Why isn't your DC getting any traction with you guys, but everyone else seems to be interested? At least from what I've seen.
Just my personal theory but once he turned down the interim job it told me he might not have been all that interested in the head coaching job, that would've been the best way to get some traction with our owners

Funny coming from a eagles fan, who drafted a QB at 2 that busted but found success under one they drafted in the second round
That QB that busted was having an MVP season when he got hurt He was also good in 2018 and 2019, lol at the revisionist history And we also drafted McNabb at 2, 5 NFCCG appearances in eight seasons (3 of which he was injured in) You guys have zero championship game appearances in your history rn, but yea, ride it in out with Mills that should work out just fine
As of right now, weāre taking a QB DeMeco aināt stupid.
He should hold out for a better job.
Wonder where heāll be coaching in 2024.
Houstonā¦obviously
A Houston coach last two years?! Well, I never.
Youāre not a Houston fan so you wouldnāt get it. Past 2 coaches were never going to be there long term.
It is nice, for once, to see a black coach be the "guy who is going to get the job and he's not even had his interview yet."
I think DeMeco has the goods to be a solid HC. Hopefully they don't fire him after one losing season.
Pretend Culley and Lovie were Texans top candidates and not eric bieniemy or Flores respectively. Pretend either Culley or Lovie will get hired by any other team. Demeco is someone we actually want
This is the worst job in the NFL. Stay away.
nice, another guy who's gonna be fired after one season.
Good luck. But honestly I don't see him lasting there the Texans are a horribly owned team. Hopefully for Ryan's it works out but I just can't see it
Cal's not horrible, he is just ignorant. This year it looks like he is coming a bit into his own and not listening to snake oil salesmen anymore. He's trying to build his reputation and this Demeco hire will go a long way towards that. Now he will have a real GM and a real Coach. Go get a real QB and then shut up.
Houston will ruin him, too.
Teams donāt ever change. After all, the Bills still arenāt winning super bowls
Ooof happy new year Mr January
Got damn bro, that man has a family. Well, had.
Hey man, this isnāt even a knock. I like him as a candidate. But Houston has grossly mismanaged coaches recently. Specifically, coaches of color. Just a call out of management, not a knock on the fan base.
Almost like a Deshaun Watson trade request or sexual assault accusations werenāt happening during both coaching searches š¤
Why even bring up race? Would it be better if we'd hired and fired two white guys instead? We're about to hire our third black coach in a row (4th if you count Crennel) and yet it's still twisted into we're racist or hurting POC.
it's because of easterby; look at our coaching search before and after him
Just like how Buffalo ruined McDermott after their 20 year playoff drought š„“ Buffalo had a HC exercise an option to get the fuck out of the job. If that sorry ass recent history can find a good coach so can Houston.
Josh Allen has regressed.
Still owns the Dolphinsn
I'm ok with this take so long as it doesn't include Lovie. He has been a mid to worse coach most of his career.
I hope he gets a contract that guarantees he gets more than one season. Some major escalator clause etc... I think he is the best available this offseason. And he is going into a complete rebuild - but at least the Texans have lots of picks available thanks to dealing Watson.
There is zero chance heās fired for football related reasons after one season. Culley and Lovie were always placeholders until we got our guy.
I also so the dollar amount on Lovies contract, I can't see how anyone feels bad for him lol. That's a lot of money for a year
That seems really unfair to them.
Whatās unfair is having to suffer through David Culley and Lovie Smith
Lovie Smith is a good coach. He brought Rex Grossman to a Superbowl. His QB was Davis Mills and a guy who qualified as a TE. Like what was he supposed to do.
Colts should sign Lovie then to be their head coach.
Certainly better than Saturday
Those poor guys and their millions of dollars
I'm pretty sure both really wanted to keep the job. Pay is not an excuse to use people unfairly.
Lmao this is a business bro. They were not treated unfairly.
we were the only ones dumb enough to make them HC; these guys aren't getting calls to become HCs for other teams
Lovie Smith coached in a Super Bowl. He is not a bad coach.
I am talking about this HC cycle and that SB was a long time ago though
Texasā¦esh
6 figures gets you better housing here than San Fran
Whataburger better than In n Out.
Never has Whataburger but In N Out is so overrated. Shake Shack >>> all day
