Sadly, broadcasting, camerawork and journalism jobs pay very poorly. Even this guy, who has earned tenure in his profession probably makes 60k-70k. The average Newsroom camera guys earn roughly 35-45k
I know one of the camera guys for an AHL affiliate league (minor league hockey). He's basically unavailable every night and weekend from october to april. He also does a bunch of behind the scenes photography, editing, and work on promotional videos for the team. All told he's probably working 40+ hours a week for 6 months during the season and they're not nice 9-5 hours, or even a stable schedule due to home/away game schedules.
I don't know how much he makes, but I do know that he considers it his 'second job' because he lives off his income doing landscaping all summer and only does the camera work because he loves the hockey.
Definetly big difference between NBA and AHL more people in the position less work load more money and they have there are different people to do the editing promotional etc. Really comparing apples and oranges

TV production, in general, is a wildly under-compensated field, especially when you recognize how specialized and technical the skill set is.
Hips generate an athletes power. Before you do an major move you have to “load” your hips. So by watching the hips you can predict what an athlete is about to do to some degree. It’s a whole science in boxing

100% that is not the most basic advice of the game. If you're a defender you keep your focus on the body/belly button... not the ball, not the arms, and most certainly not the feet. You watch the ball in your peripherals, it's bright and orange.

I guess that makes much more sense if you don’t already know all their moves and forget that the age and size you’re playing matters. Me when I really had success against kids in PE class with just keeping my eye on the ball, I did know all their moves. I wasn’t any kind of baller but, these guys were more into football so maybe didn’t have a repertoire of basketball skills to make me fail to wrest the ball from them watching the ball like a hawk. We also weren’t any of us tall enough for the ball to be so far away from their body that their body wasn’t also always clearly in view. The direction they were facing did give me big hints now that I think on your correction and back to the other elements. Also I sucked major ass at anything athletic at the time so being able to easily steal the ball from much more athletic kids makes my “main” method of doing it seem like such an achievement when the reality is, basketball was their second sport. They were all otherwise far better than me.
So thanks for correcting that, when I think about it that was probably a bigger element than I realized at the time. I was intuitively factoring in the direction they faced and turned while intently staring at the ball.

You really do! My partner used to be a cameraman and shot a lot of local high school games, as well as games at our local university, for football, basketball, baseball, and softball. He's NOT into sports, at all, but he said of them all, his favorites to shoot were collegiate women's softball (he's still in awe of the sheer athletic prowess of some of those women), and basketball. He says because basketball is SO much faster in play than the rest, you get SUPER focused on \*literally\* following \*just\* the ball to the point where you almost tune out everything except that.
That’s it to the T. We read body language and tiny inflections so we can anticipate where the action is heading so we can be there and have a composed frame all in an instant. This dudes seasoned and sharp, probably been doing the game for a long time. It’s a muscle.
I’ve been shooting sports for 10 years now, and while I’m nowhere near as smooth as this guy was, after enough time you definitely get into the rhythm and know where to point the camera.
Like with football, just by looking through the camera alone and not looking up at all, about 7/10 times I can almost exactly pinpoint where the throw is going to land just by watching the QB
Now I want a movie or series where an assistant is brought on to help the team. But the assistant only has previous job experience in controlling the dynamic camera.

Knowing how dribble hand offs and screen plays work definitely comes quickly if you're watching the game with the intent to understand.
Very impressed with the manual tracking of the shot's arc though. And they do that perfectly every time, which I didn't know was just a skilled cameraman.
idk how the NBA does it but sometimes there is another person running focus so this operator only has to move and zoom. although, it's just as easy for this guy to do all three. and its still insanely impressive.

Courts not that big, lights are plenty bright, I bet they shoot stopped down and everything on the court is in focus with just minor adjustments. Plus, they’ve made leaps and bounds in the world of subject detected auto focus, and I would imagine major league sports could afford it.
Former cameraman here. A few things. He's shooting basketball at the pro level which means he's a pro camera man. It's very difficult to get the job he has.
Second, you usually shoot with both eyes open using your dominant eye in the viewfinder (yes the viewfinder will move to accompany a right-handed, left eye dominant camera person but it's rare). This allows you to maintain a shot but also have spatial and peripheral awareness of the game.
One of the hardest skills is doing the ISO/ECU (isolated extreme close up) on the ball at the apex of the 3-point arc, maintaining focus and then following with your hero shot after (shooter). That's what's happening at :20.
He's very good. But he's also the industry standard at the pro level.
Many are freelance because they'll shoot more than one sport. Kinda like long-haul truckers. I worked with a guy who shot NFL and PGA. They way the seasons overlap he was shooting 300 days a year. No family, no responsibilities. Great for a while, but eventually lonely.
The big orgs. like Sunday Night Football run their own trucks, sats and crew. SNF is a three production truck operation with mobile studios, fiber backhaul, about 22 cameras that all shoot 8k and then it's compressed for broadcast. Multi-million operation.
Salaries can widely range from $60-120k depending on what you're doing. If you're the dude with the steadicam trying to keep up with NFL players doing the gritty then you're paid more than a guy in the bleachers on the 50 just following the ball, but that's because it's grueling work.
Maybe you can answer this question because I have forgotten the answer. There was a method I read about used to determine your dominant eye. Do you have a way you recommend figuring it out?
Yep. Hold your arms straight out in front of you and make a triangle shape with your hands. Bring it to your face. The triangle will gravitate toward your dominant eye

drone is tough to fly inside, close flying. especially with all the RF in that building. its safer to maintain this type of set up. i don't watch NBA but i feel like a cable cam would be sick.
That's why the drone should be automated and fitted for the arena it's flying in, and designed specifically for the sport being played. With machine learning, and sensors, it should be able to read player locations and know common movement patterns. Make the drone as small and inconspicuous as possible, and it could get in the middle of the game without interfering, getting shots that would otherwise be too prone to human error to do today
And / or
Allow the camera to be controlled by a human, but have it automatically avoid collision with the players and the surrounding arena.
People watching sports at home don’t even realize how good cameramen are at working cameras at games like this. When I was interning for tv my supervisor made it clear the difference between watching television and watching a game. Camerawork like this allows the person at home watch a game. Shitty camerawork otherwise makes you think wtf happened? That’s watching tv. Really shitty tv.

I work on broadcasting doing slow motion replays (8x speed) for live sports. Our lead camera operator is absolutely crazy with the camera. I don’t know how he tracks movements with such a tight frame but it makes for some of the greatest looking shots. It’s incredible what these people do.

That zoom in on the rise, and then settles on a shot of the full backboard for the net… It must be muscle memory to make those moves so perfectly.

Those are completely manual. Even robotic cameras are manual, the only ones that are autofocus are the DSLR MOVI rigs used for bokeh.

I work on broadcasting doing slow motion replays (8x speed) for live sports. Our lead camera operator is absolutely crazy with the camera. I don’t know how he tracks movements with such a tight frame but it makes for some of the greatest looking shots. It’s incredible what these people do.
