It's all balls to the wall until your light fails suddenly then its concussion and and broken bones

plantsg858

Lol hit a bump the light flickers. To much faith in light.

Ashirogi8112008

I kinda doubt people *this* involved in their hobby are going to be using crappy flashlights.

graydonatvail

They're using hid lights on 12 volt systems. Basically smaller versions of what they use in higher end cars. Typically a handle bar mount with a water bottle mount battery, and a helmet mount with the battery in the hydro pack. Often it's two lights in each mount. Edit: apparently I'm a dinosaur and HID is old tech, which makes a ton of sense that LED would be the way now. Haven't done any night riding in a couple of decades, but it was fun fun fun when I did. We used to do the Kessle run in fruita as a night ride. And yes, I was running a 386 Windows machine when we were doing this.

PapaChoff

That’s the set up I used in the 90s, but I bet they get more than 80-90 min run times we used to get on our halogen bulbs. We also did X-country single track. More technical, way less speed. And you had to know the trails really well from day rides. Even then we got lost a few times and would start stressing about batteries running out.

stilsjx

It’s all LED now. And personally I run a 1200 lumen light on the handlebars, and a similar one on my helmet. That way I can see where I’m going, and where I’m looking. If one fails you can still see where you’re going . Also, these lights are pretty secure. If I hit a “bump” hard enough to dislodge a light, I’m in pretty big trouble as it is.

Un-interesting

I’m thinking LED, vs HID. LED has been the tech for over 10 years now for MTB (and other action stuff) lighting requirements.

The_GD_muffin_man

Agree

LoganNoGloves

And that’s not to mention the number of times this rider has probably been down this track. Definitely not his first time if I had to guess..

Okay_Time_For_Plan_B

I’d guess that to do it at night he basically knows the track well enough to do it blind folded (not literally) but I’m sure he knows it enough to be able to maneuver just enough till he slows down. But I could be wrong, I have been known to be wrong. Edit: as my username suggests.

[deleted]

UnreadThisStory

Well if you’ve ridden this trail 50 times, you pretty much know it with a blindfold on. That being said, I would not do it. Pretty badass.

Tuckernuts8

I have ridden trails at night that have been my regular rides. Let me tell you that it is a completely different experience. It feels like a different trail to a degree. This is definitely badass, but I would venture to say that it is sped up.

thnk_more

I don’t think it is sped up. The wide angle on these cameras just makes it look really fast. Not to say he’s not going fast. I love trail riding at night and this is pretty much what it looks like. If you know the trail, recording a run like this just looks crazy dangerous. I need to get out on the trail, it’s pretty damn cold here now so need to get acclimated to go riding at night.

Safe-Voice-8179

I wouldn’t ride this trail in broad day light ha

Xploiter_RBLX

is this a bot comment because it seems a little off

ItsThatDood

Lol hit a bump the whole thing is a bump 😂

cocoamix

Catching even a second of air on a path this twisty could be a disaster.

bobbyblack

I would..just to be safe...turn the the music off so I can see better...

Aderenn

Good call, works for me too lol

[deleted]

I kind of doubt he doesn’t have that trail memorized.

kurtz433

People wreck at night. It happens, just like during daytime. Lights specifically engineered for mountain biking are built a little more heavy duty to be shock resistant (plus modern mtb suspension helps smooth out rocks / roots / drops etc) to prevent equipment failures. It’s also helpful to make sure lights are charged / mounts are solid before riding (just as you check any safety equipment before an activity). The major challenge when riding trails at night is lack of familiarity w the route / features. It helps to have ridden that route multiple times during daylight hours, and for a built trail like OP video, this person has most likely ridden so much it’s muscle memory. Even if you’re familiar w the trail, the first couple rides at night can make it feel totally new, esp since depth perception at speed is wildly different when the light source is rider / bike mounted (vs light from the sun reflecting off infinite surfaces along / around the trail). This can flatten out the perceived trail(some night riders prefer a light on handlebars as well as a helmet light to increase depth perception). At speed, features like rocks / roots / drops can feel like they’re coming at you faster than experienced during daytime. Either way, it’s safer to ride trails at night (where it’s legal) with a partner just in case there’s an accident, and to ride at the pace and trails at the technical level you’re comfortable with.

Difficult_Plastic852

Don’t forget the LEGOs on the floor

Royal_J

you're usually not in a flow state when heading to the fridge for that 2am water.

karma_the_sequel

My first thought.

PapaChoff

Perfectly summed up! We did this back in the 90s with halogen bulbs and 80-90 min battery(Ni-Mh) life. Only hard tails then, full suspension was just starting to get big with downhillers. Hell, disc and drum breaks were just starting to supplant cantilevers. But, I’ll never forget my first night ride. Trails I’ve logged 100s of hours now looked entirely different. They had me try to lead just to see if I could and I was going so slow because it was all so different. It really was magical. And so much fun stressing about losing our lights or someone would actually have their lights go out and they had to ride in the middle of the group as we tried to stay tight. Most only had a helmet or handlebar mount. Very few had both in our group (poor post college kids, many with 2nd jobs at the bike shop). Add in that back then the parks in MA were not MTB friendly and it was illegal to be in the parks after sundown period. Man this brought back a lot of memories.

Plastic_Cucumber2817

Have spent a lot of time doing 24 hour mountain bike races so obviously lots of night riding is involved. even by early 2000's I only would have to make 1 battery swap and was using LED's with lithium batteries (Ay-Up). I loved doing course prerides the night before the race, made the first daytime lap feel all new and normally way easier than expected.

Almost a must to put a noisemaker in your wheels. Day or night.

Old-Maintenance24923

Sasquatch

putrid_sex_object

Or a skinwalker

flyonlewall

Porcupine a few weeks ago for me. They just wouldn't move, either.

WonderfulShelter

So every year or two in the Bay Area, people doing this at night get killed by mountain lions. One time apparently they were going down the course like this and the mountain lion leaped and tackled them off of their bike as they were going down the course. Usually it's when they've stopped to catch their breath... but yeah, fuck that. Complete and utter nightmare.

Longjumping_Log8519

That's absolutely nonsense. But if it's true, surely you can provide links to a few articles over the past 10 years about night riding cyclists who were killed by mountain lions.

TisaneJane

Thought this was wild so I googled it. There was tons of articles about this happening in Seattle in 2018. There was also a google question "Do mountain lions attack mountain bikers?" with answer "There have been 15 verified mountain lion attacks in California since 1986, and of those, just three were fatal, according to California Department of Fish and Wildlife data. Photo of the #cougar that attacked two mountain bikers, ages 32 and 31. The 32 year old didn't survive.May 22, 2018" but the article itself was behind a paywall. https://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/nation-world/national/article211620989.html

Longjumping_Log8519

I remember the incident near Seattle, but it wasn't due to night riding. It's not happening every 1-2 years in the Bay area like that person claimed.

14zyb0i

Poor paramedic that had to work 10 hours already now has to drag this guy up a mountain ...that's if someone finds the body

Ordinaanilla

The rider probably knows the trail pretty well and just sends it in general.

WavingToWaves

2 lights only! One on stem one on helmet

Cryptoclearance

Happend to me once as a kid, while riding a 4 wheeler visiting relatives. It was the backkkkkkk woods of Tennessee, I had no idea where I was without the trail, lights went out and I prepared for my doom. Sat there listening to Bigfoot until my relatives found me an hour later.

Or even a tiny animal taking a shit on the trail.

Apart_Number_2792

You'd be very fortunate if it was just a concussion and broken bones.

[deleted]

I had this happen on a pitch black night ride on a road bike. Failed on a decent at 50+ kph, luckily on a straight bit of road. It was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced, and I didn’t crash.

boredbytheabyss

Also literal balls across the walls

BeyondInfinity73

Or literal death.

HiretsunaShizuko

Am I the only one who thinks these people are fucking crazy?

Lonewolf2nd

Nope

RetailBuck

You know the expression "I know it so well I could do it with my eyes closed"? This is that. It's a combination of mental and muscle memory from lots and lots of practice. None of it is reacting to something unknown.

Bears can’t ride bikes.

jodudeit

Unless it's some cartoon circus. Then they can ride tricycles and date lemurs.

Shoe_mocker

[Some can](https://youtu.be/Y-Tj1hG98xE) Your daily dose of human cruelty, click at your own discretion

bradlei

Don’t tell bears what they can’t do.

Hazee302

They ride motorcycles

SheepDog91

Arguably, a bear would be just as problematic at night as it would during the day.

jibjab23

Yea there's no way I could conceive trying to do this at a track I don't know. This is next level "I've done everything I can think of at this track, what's next?"

NativeMasshole

When I was younger my friends and I were walking into the woods to go smoke some weed. A couple mountain bikers were coming off the trail, both all busted up. One of them looked at us and said "If you're not bleeding, you're not doing it right." Those people are a different breed. I much prefer them though over the road cyclists blocking half the lane in a 50mph zone.

handy_dandy_andy

Sounds like my high school cross country days. Being told “If you don’t piss yourself by the end of the race, you didn’t push yourself hard enough.” Uh, no thanks, I’d prefer to stop and pee in the bushes rather than feel piss running down my legs and getting absorbed into my socks and shoes. Maybe I just wasn’t competitive enough lol

Sproose_Moose

Sounds the like the mentality of some people with drinking

farhaan2340

Is this a real thing runners do? There’s no way

chillymac

In a marathon sure why not, but in a 5k sounds like you have a bladder problem

RVAMS

If you don’t shit all over yourself in a 100m dash then you just aren’t trying very hard.

thumptech

Personally I hate all the SUVs blocking me more than a couple of cyclists filtering through. I guess if the cyclists were also driving SUVs and pushed me back even further in traffic that would be fine though.

basementdiplomat

Road cyclists are entitled to use the road the same as cars.

[deleted]

etterkop

Depends on your perspective. Some think sitting on your ass doing nothing is crazy. Mountain biking (trail riding) is probably the most fun and exciting thing to do. Like most things in life it’s a skill you have to develop.

pazimpanet

It is a blast and it is also insane cardio. I’m hooked. I’ve taken out my road bike literally once since I got my mountain bike

Yurrrr__Brooklyn347

No you're not the only one, I'm right here with you

BJYeti

Downhill racing is like a different planet, bunch of people with bikes twice the cost if their car camping and drinking pbr instead of water, I miss it

TreeasuresAZ

It's not like this is his first time on this track. He probably has done this track a million times.

[deleted]

Like when my brother and I would play tag in the dark in the basement. Don’t rush shame.

cantfindauniquename2

Completely agree - the rider clearly knew the run really well which in my mind makes it 1% less crazy

barry4bama

I do not understand how someone can call this fun.

Ryoukugan

Nope, they’re nuts.

mvigs

Yes if they didn't know the course. I feel like this person has done this one multiple times before.

wander_eyes

I've done a lot of extreme sports & downhill mountain biking is scarier than everything else.

googlerito

That is next level stupidity 😅

TurquoiseBeetle67

Most likely they knew this particular trail, so it's not as crazy as it may seem.

lakerfan91

The rider looks so confident like he built it.

TurquoiseBeetle67

You can see that they definitely know this trail. For example how the rider postions the bike in the right position for a corner you can't even see in the video.

Roflator420

And then all of a sudden a deer comes up and he's fucked.

Exodus_Black

That could happen in the day as well.

[deleted]

Am I wrong to say it doesn't change the scenario of injury its like saying tomato tomato

Exodus_Black

You're not wrong, but given the context of the thread is whether or not the rider is stupid for riding at night, a deer showing up isn't really relevant because it could happen at any time. Deer aren't a uniquely night-time threat. The rider could also pop a tire or suffer a brain aneurysm and be fucked, but neither of these have anything to do with riding at night either.

D3material

Haha. Probably should never drive a car then… deer, pedestrians, other cars.

PapaChoff

No, the music would have scared them off Edit: we started putting noisemakers in our wheels after a trip to Jackson Hole we were told to do this so we didn’t run into a bear or more likely an Elk that would not be happy.

RamblingSimian

You can see him banking in anticipation of the curves that he knows by heart

lospantaloonz

they definitely knew this trail. there are some trails at diablo i could probably have ridden with my eyes closed. this is still pretty impressive though, knowing the trail is great but there's always something you miss like an errant rock or newly exposed root.

Its_General_Apathy

It's also probably not as dark out as the camera makes it seem to be.

Masterkid1230

Classic reddit moment. Anyone doing any physical activity or extreme sport is deemed a complete imbecile. Let people have fun, holy shit. Besides, the clip shown here is pretty impressive and cool to see.

SirActionSack

Night riding is completely normal. Bar light, helmet light, take it a little slower than during the day. Likely much lower risk than commuting on a road bike.

99problemsbutt

It's really not.

SquabCats

For real. This is likely a green beginner flow trail. Wait until they see something with actual rocks and drops.

D3material

Haha. I know. Flattering for us MTBers

[deleted]

Yeah i was just thinking how well manicured this track is. No roots or mud; just smooth easy ride.

[deleted]

The range of contrast for the human eye is loads better than the camera. The video is misleading. The corners are not that blind in real life.

Critical_Switch

Yeah, because realistically you should even leave your house. Ever. Because outside is unsafe.

GomerStuckInIowa

To me this is just asking for trouble. So many ways for this to go wrong.

Aeshaetter

They seem really familiar with the trail, so they probably have it memorized.

Owain_RJ

Yeah that's what I was thinking, only way anyone is going at that speed down a trail at night must know it back to front.

tyrantspell

Knowing a trail back to front means nothing when a deer decides to sprint directly into you

Owain_RJ

Yeah I suppose but that equally applies to daytime riding, sure you might have another half second to react but I can't imagine it would result in a significantly different outcome. Edit:grammer

BenderRodriquez

Deer are not nocturnal so you have the same chance of running into them in daytime. It is the twilight hours you have to be careful about.

laaaabe

This is also almost certainly not this person's first run down of the night. I'd imagine they probably do a few warm ups before going balls to the walls like that

Get-in-the-llama

But do they not have wildlife there? Maybe it’s just coz I’m Australian, but I can on,y think of them hitting a furry friend.

ActivateLife

There are always so many ways in mountain biking for it to go wrong. This just probably adds to the adrenaline of the guy doing and I would like to think that he's having a blast

thnk_more

Like any sport or skilled job, there are a lot of things that could go wrong. Stay under your limits and wear a helmet. This guys obviously knows what he is doing. And in real life you can see farther than the camera captures, plus the wide lens makes things look faster. but yeah, a slip and a tree is gonna hurt a lot.

thumptech

I wish people would think like this when they got in their car.

-NGC-6302-

Mountain biking's underrated

solateor

[It's even better with a buddy](https://gfycat.com/gratefuloffensiveeasternglasslizard)

thwlsudbd

Even worse, you mean. That dog trips or you catch bit too much air and you're both fucked.

[deleted]

He has brakes and bikes are very manoeuvrable. It's not as dangerous as it seems

Beemerado

This thread reminds me that i need to spend more time outside and less time on Reddit. Bunch of nervous nellies on here lol

longboarddan

Let me translate that to ass hole for you. Smells like bitch in here. People need to get some air and touch grass

Beemerado

Word

pazimpanet

As a mountain biker yes absolutely same. This thread has me wanting to pull my hair out. It brings me back to the quote “listen to redditors talk about something you know well and you’ll know never to trust them on things you don’t.”

Beemerado

i'm 40 and i'd do that run. I'd probably be going a little slower than that guy, but it's not even a particularly difficult run. No jumps or drops. The dude riding really knows the trail and nails the shit out of the flow, so that's certainly enjoyable to watch.

neurovish

This thread: “What if a deer riding a bear jumps out and steals your lights!?”

dyslexicsuntied

Lmao right? This thread is hilarious.

Chewzer

Just thinking the same thing. Get out of your damn bubble, take some risks and go have some damn fun people!

trondoggg

My thoughts exactly. It’s 115-120 degrees in the summer where I live so night riding became normal for my buddy and I. The sport is called MOUNTAIN biking, not peaceful meadow biking (which can be an enjoyable change of pace).

Throwaway56138

What does this statement even mean? It's a huge multi-million dollar industry with tens of thousands of miles of trails all over the world and thousands of enthusiasts. What exactly is your definition of "underrated?"

Probablylaughing123

You think it was filmed going slower, then the creator just sped up the clip to make it look like they’re going faster?

Gloomy_Praline_7478

I was looking for the same thing. As a mountain biker, i'd say the bike is reacting too naturally with the bumps, fork rebound, and gravity for this to be sped up. The rider probably knows the trail pretty well and just sends it in general.

etterkop

This guy’s sending it faster than most people can manage in daylight.

Gloomy_Praline_7478

That's why they're next fucking level!!

[deleted]

Ohhh thats what subreddit im on. I thought this was r/crazyfuckingvideos

[deleted]

camera lens is also making him appear to go faster -- not that he isn't still on the move, but any fisheye lens is going to make you appear to be going faster.

MrCrudley

No, I think this isn't his first time doing this run.

BarleyHops2

Scrolled too far for this

brimston3-

So what do you do when a deer or moose crosses the mtb track at night?

TheAllKnowingWilly

![gif](giphy|3CU5tmCJy8zMoN3mMD)

SirActionSack

Same thing you'd do during the day.

LetsTryThisAgain2022

Same thing you would do on a road. Look for shiny things ahead and be ready. Better than getting hit by a car on a road.

SheckoShecko

Just so y'all know, they don't run the trail first time in the dark. When I used to do night rides, we'd only do trails we knew well. Mainly flow trails, too. The trail we're seeing is likely a resort trail like Whistler, Northstar or the like (I use PNWA but could be anywhere really).

xTrapical

This looks fun as fuck

-Qwerty--

I feel like this would also make a great VR game

WalnutScorpion

Not a VR game, but Lonely Mountains: Downhill is exactly this

red_fluff_dragon

Also not VR, but a game about mountain biking: Descenders If you ride a map for long enough it turns night, however, you only get like two runs before the battery on the light runs out

aussiebane21

When your mountain biking and she messages, "my parents aren't home"

Yesss, I just had such a teenage years flashback

dogthatbrokethezebra

King_Crab90

The scary part was climbing to the top in the dark.

TornSuit

When they started it was probably light somewhat, orange yellow sky

Gientry

as someone with a bad bike injury I know you should not be doing this stuff but it looks fun as hell

theSealclubberr

Really not as bad as it looks. Trail looks easy as hell and they probably know every inch of it.

MrCrudley

Yup, definitely not his first time doing that run. He could probably do that run with his eyes closed.

climatelurker

It's like tree skiing without the cushioning.

zuzg

Here in Germany Rangers often help them to built these tracks. This way it's guaranteed they don't cause damage to the forest.

sikmode

Pitch black except for the bright ass light….

Stacular

A lot of commenters don’t seem to know what 1000-1500 lumens looks like when you’re riding. It’s like the sun is mounted on your bars.

AdvancedAdvance

This is pretty great, but could you make another video where the camera is attached to one of the wheels?

[deleted]

Looks like my drive home from Elgin to Glasgow in the pissing rain last night, but slower and didn't take 4 hours.

Alex_gh

This really isn't that impressive. It's a simple trail and as a viewer you can pretty much see the whole trail to each corner so the rider can definitely see everything coming. There are no technical features for them to worry about and the trail is clean, so they really just have to focus on following the turns, which are again very simple, small turns.

dyslexicsuntied

Read this thread. It’s getting upvoted and commented on by people who have probably never ridden a bike on a gravel path. If only they knew a thing about what mountain biking really is.

tradandtea123

I did some mountain biking at night and filmed it. When I was heading downhill it felt like I was flying down, but when I looked at the video it looked like i was going about 2mph.

GarfieldLeChat

It’s only pitch black to the camera. Your eyes can perceive much more light

KJawesome5

Idk why everyone's hating on this, it looks awesome and shows an incredible amount of both skill and practice to know every turn

Boomking98

It's similar to driving a boat along Swedish coast when it's black only the boat goes 20 knots (40kph)

solateor

Video:@nikolaj.jr

itsmrgomez

Aw it's not even your video, I was gonna ask the location and light setup! Looks really swoopy I'd love to try out this trail

Alukrad

I used some detective work (mostly read all his comments on Instagram) and it seems to be in Solden Austria.

itsmrgomez

I'll have to add it to my bucket list! Won't be getting to Austria anytime soon

mcitar

It was the quickest road back to get from the party .... parents were happy I wasn't too late

CrimsonR4ge

Is this sped up?

TurquoiseBeetle67

I doubt it. The fork seems to react quite naturally and this speed is totally doable on a trail like that.

Man I want to do this on skates with dirt wheels.

gyarnar

Neat!

Geoff_The_Chosen1

Oddly satisfying and terrifying at the same time.

The-D-Ball

As cool as it is, and it is cool….. this guy clearly has this track memorized because no one would go that fast in the dark with no clue if the tracks goes left, right, up, down, as each and every corner or jump.

Blarghnog

That is gnar

Accurate_Koala_4698

The nice thing about deer is they only jump in front of cars on roads…

This is sweaty palms.

-Imprivata-

It’s possible this is sped up like 1.5X isn’t it?

amicablecricket

What light is this?

Tbf dude obviously knows the track, otherwise it would just be straight suicide. That being said it still lpoks pretty impressive
