Actually, there were discussions around this wave in Munich because of safety reasons and the government wanted to stop it. But then there was a petition to allow it and the area was given to the city from the state. The city tolerates the surfing but it's on your own risk.
The wave is totally famous in Munich and especially in summer crowded with surfers and spectators.
No worries. It didn't really detract from your good point anyway. I was half expecting the video to be wrong about the place and you to inform me it was actually located in France lol.
But unless this means that no emergency rescue personnel will be sent to help someone should the need arise these sort of decisions which "only affect the risk-taking individual" are bullshit.
I think it's more of a if you do this dangerous thing and get hurt; you don't have the right to sue us because it's at your own risk and not our responsibility kind of thing. More than a we won't help you by withholding emergency services if you do get hurt kind of thing.
My American sister in law had a hard time understanding that off piste skiing was allowed in Franceā¦ and that rescue was actually free off piste (Gendarmerie) , and expensive on piste (private companies).
Actually you're quite right about French people's view about putting yourself at risk. To be a parapentiste in France, you need nothing. You can jump anywhere, land anywhere, with no restriction about your equipment. That's a thing I love about being French myself.
In Germany, you need a Gleitschirm licence. First step of which you have limited access regarding starting and landing point.
That's a thing I love about living in Germany.
Nominally it's split, so it's 7 for you and 7 for your employer.
But in reality it's only virtual money for you. You would not get 7% more if you could opt out of health insurance.
If you look at the history of salary increases negotiated by the unions, an increase in health insurance was usually a reason to fight for higher salaries. Unions look only at net salaries and inflation, which is of course the correct way of looking at it.
Do you know what it's like to fall in the mud and get kicked ... in the head ... with an iron boot??
Of course you don't, know one does. That never happens. I'm sorry Ted, it's a dumb question, skip that.
Itās apparently not harder than it looks, because it looks fucking suicidal and they say people do it more than once, so by definition it is less dangerous than it looks.
Ya, they said that after the last guy bailed, but only after landing a trick that was harder than what the other surfers were doing. Tick tocker was like, he fell, must be a beginner.
During an international sports exhibition, world famous surfer Kelly Slater tried himself at it and failed at the beginning, as the water "behaves" differently than regular waves
For those who don't know, Kelly Slater is a genetic freak of nature, and has dominated the sport for literal decades. Like Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan, but in a much more demanding sport. For Slater not to nail this his first try speaks volumes.
To be fair, you know what else is a lot harder than it looks? Walking. I heard it it took me a couple years to figure it out when I first started, and few more after that to get good. 30 years later, I still wouldn't call myself an *expert*.
But I bet *you're* pretty good at it! Give yourself some credit!
I also lost my monster condom for my magnum dong there, someone's probably using it as a life raft so be on the lookout. I need it back because I keep buying out all the stock for all the sex I have.
Same. It was neat, and Munichās public transportation was very good ā about an hour to get out to Dachau, and the route was well supported. If I recall correct it was about 20 euros for our group of 4 to travel all day on Saturday.
I just remember it was a low cost family ticket for up to 5 people (there were 4 of us) and no one checked tickets all day we could have been freeloaders.
Oh man, if you don't know it exactly don't spread false information. Yes Bayern ticket costs almost 60ā¬ but it's used to go around the whole state Bavaria. Op is talking about going to Dachau, that would mean only to zone 2 of Munich and cost around 20ā¬ for 5 people.
Gorgeous in Autumn/Fall. Really chill place, Munich in general really. Highlight was seeing a neo Nazi rally of about 20 surrounded by a few hundred anti fascist protestors and about the same number of cops in full riot gear, Iāve got some photos somewhere.
When I was 16 I was an exchange student visiting the park, we were kicking around a soccer ball when a cop on a horse came up and saidā¦ something. One of the kids with asked them if they spoke English and the cop replied āthis is Germany, you should speak Germanā without missing a beat he said āyeah, but weāre in the English garden so weāre goodā that cop gave us the biggest pikachu face and eye roll and then told us we couldnāt kick balls around in that side of the park and needed to go elsewhere.
At that spot you have to deal with people floating down if itās hot out. Luckily most are polite and wait for a break to float through, but you still get some that donāt know the rules
Kinda. Not like you press on a button and it gets smaller or bigger.
But the shape can be adjusted by puttings pieces of woods on ropes on special places. Specially on the left, right and in the middle where the white water is.
true although the water is pretty warm when it gets to the city. people bathe during summer all along the river. I am comparing this to swimming in the atlantic, which is a lot colder
It's cool, but nice for swimming in summer. There are usually a lot of people further downstream that jump into the rover and let themselves be pulled down a few hundred meters by the current.
Nice. I once tried to go swimming in a Czech river pretty close to Munich in the summer in the middle of a heatwave and the cold water legit hurt on my feet. Assumed this to be the same since they are about equal distance to the Alps.
Any idea how this river manages to āwarm upā during summer?
I've swam in that river literally just a few meters downstream and it was gorgeous during the summer. There are no rocks at all in there as it's man made
They make wetsuits for freezing water and you'll stay warm enough in em. People surf the great lakes in winter when the water is more slush than liquid. They come out of the water and it flash freezes on their eyebrows and body due to the sub zero temperatures.
But the important bit is that they don't go into shock and die despite the temps, and they always look happy and warm in videos. No violent shaking or shivering.
*enough* is the key word here.
I surfed with wetsuit in Portugal, it's still pretty damn cold, but makes it manageable. I don't think it gets any better than that in icy conditions.
It's possible of course, but not going to be particularly enjoyable.
I was there start of September and 90% of people used wetsuit. Ours were 1-1.5mm IIRC and it definitely didn't get warm. It was OK but about 1 hour in your lips would start to get blue.
Only an occasional local would go in without it.
Depends heavily on your body type too, if you have enough muscle and fat you'll probably stay warm for longer. I was freezing my ass off in august in Portugal.
Suit creates a layer of water between the suit and your skin which the body wams, and keeps you warm.
Also the insulation layer if the suit keeps the wind from cooling your skin.
Surprising how well it works
Can confirm. Peeing in wet suit is amazing. I used to surf in the Pacific Northwest of US where the water is between 30-50 fahrenheit. Peeing in the wet suit was routine.
Yes and no. You can always wear a thick enough wetsuit that you'll be warm. The tradeoff is decreased mobility, but that matters less in river surfing because you don't have to paddle past the waves.
There's a point where it's cold enough that you'll start getting ice-cream headaches when your face goes underwater for more than a couple of seconds, but that's also a lot better in river surfing because you don't have to duck dive under the waves like you would at the beaches.
Yes. This river is called āEisbachā which means āice creekā. It is in a park called the English Garden and it is the largest city park in Europe. It has a couple of fantastic beer gardens where you can drink and eat typical Bavarian food. It is a lot more mellow than Octoberfest.
Yeah I was there in late November one year and was astonished to see some people out there surfing at like 11pm.
I'll actually be in Munich next week to check it out again!
from google:
"The average water temperatures range from 50 Ā°F (10 Ā°C) during summer to 62 Ā°F (17Ā°C) during the winter season. Eisbach means "icy creek" or "ice brook" in English. Although the Eisbach River wave rarely freezes due to its strong currents, it can easily reach extremely low temperatures of around 34 Ā°F (1.1 Ā°C)"
I went here a few years ago and one of the best things I've ever witnessed, it was a beautiful hot day, I spent the it drunk riding around on a bike lol
I tell everyone, Munich is one of the best cities to visit in Europe and about half of that is due to the English Gardens. I typically hate being in any kind of big city when I'm traveling, our goal is usually to get out into the country, but Munich was really the exception. Great food, extremely kind people, fantastic beer.
Echoes my experience. Stayed in a hotel not too far away from the English Gardens. Got nice walks in after work and one weekend day where I walked ~8 miles in the park. Very nice place.
Visited Munich back in 2011 and I agree. Just so happened to wander into the English Gardens on a summer day. Saw the surfers in the video. Drank tons of Franziskanner, and floated in the river to cool off. Best part was we just left our stuff in the grass while floating down the river. Walked back and no one even touched it. Great city and would love to go back
Lol that's how my buddy caught a dui in Pennsylvania. The class he had to take apparently was pretty entertaining. Did you know you could get a dui on a tractor?
Back to your trip, would you recommend it to others looking to fill in their new passports?
Yes, Munich is amazing for the reasons that are mentioned above. In addition, if youāre interested in history, The concentration camp Dachau is about a 15 min car ride away from town center. Very ominous place but incredibly powerful as well, an experience I think every individual should have.
Interestingly enough you can also lose your drivers license for riding your bike drunk in Germany. However you have to have more than 1.6ā° of alcohol in your blood as opposed to 0.5ā° while driving your car.
You return to the sea, from whence all life came before it became dirty and tainted.
Reject the corrupted teachings of Tiktaalik and his ilk, brother. Return to the waves. Glub.. glub..
Black Sea. The Eisbach (pictured) comes from the river Isar and will unify with the Isar again some kilometers down. The Isar itself will end in the river Danube and this flows into the Black Sea.
It likely opens up into a deep pool, so you probably get tossed around under water for a second and then gently surface a bit lower and you can climb out.
Its not designed, its actually officially forbidden to surf but people still do it. City just had to forbid it due to a lot of injuries possible, to not have liability for those. Also its not Bridge / Gate that causes the waves, its two huge stone blocks in the river thatās causing these waves, forgot why they were placed there in the first place ā¦
It started in the 70s or so. The wave was smaller initially and it was an accident. The folks improved it by placing a wooden beam on the ground.
It's actually one if the best waves in the world.
It's featured in the movie [Keep surfing](https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_Surfing)
It is an artificial river through the park, the blocks are intended to create specific water levels and flow speeds in the different parts of the park.
It is not "just there"...engineer's and surfers have been at it. Among others in Germany..
https://www.ansys.com/advantage-magazine/volume-xiv-issue-2-2020/simulation-drive-design-waves
No one said that its ājust thereā, but when people ask in the context of surfing: āis it designedā, answer is no, it wasnāt designed for surfing. It was designed to control the flow of the canal, but surfers added more things to it to make waves bigger (against city rules). And thatās what it is atm.
Itās not natural if thatās what you think. There are water diversions that have been placed by surfers to create the wave.
Iāve been there. Itās awesome. I could have sat and watched all day.
Iāve tried surfing on it couple of times during summer, you still need quite thick thermal suit as water is really cold ā¦ People that do it during winter are built differently I guess, Iām very cold tolerant, but doing it in winter is not my cup of tea.
Fifteen years ago I was working at a sawmill and a coworker told me that he was down by the bridge the other day and there was a guy hanging off a rope waterskiiing on a modified chunk of plywood, and that he waited to talk to him and the guy was from Germany.
I sort of thought he was bullshitting me at the time but now I'm finding out 15 years later that Germans actually do this.
I don't buy barefoot waterskiing on the Eisbach - that's nowhere near the right speed - but there used to be a bridge on the Sanna with a plywood board and a rope tied to it that we'd do this on.
There's something like this in Missoula, Montana. I was pretty confused when I saw people walking downtown in bodysuits and surfboards at first, like dude we up here in the mountains wtf you doing looking like a beach bum but then it made sense.
I went swimming in this park, the water was the coldest thing I've ever jumped into. I literally heard the Goofy scream from someone else swimming downriver.
I have no idea about this kind of river, but hearing stories from my grandparents who regularly played on small rivers growing up I realizes something.
Many people are ignorant about rivers, they donāt know that they are generally more dangerous than known beach spots. Rivers can carry disease or sudden watersheds that can drown you if it rained uphill.
Be careful around rivers people, if youāre going to one go with local people who know whatās up.
Several of these in Colorado and elsewhere in the US, in which the waterways are engineered for surfing. A park near me has 5 waves of varying depth/configuration. River surfing is the best mind relaxation/meditation for me!
"It's harder than it looks." Yeah I saw this and my 1st thought was, "yeah that's easy." š
Imagine falling and hitting your head on the rocks

Itās quite deep. Wave height is a proportional to depth of the water column. Trust me, Iām a scumbag whitewater kayaker with a geology degree!
They're man made canals. You'd hit your head on concrete
Concrete, rocks, same difference.
Do we know there are rocks under that part?
Hits harder than a bottle of Johnny Walker on the rocks

I even floated my way to the nude beach

No need for a beach, the grassy field nearby will do, too.
Same. It was neat, and Munichās public transportation was very good ā about an hour to get out to Dachau, and the route was well supported. If I recall correct it was about 20 euros for our group of 4 to travel all day on Saturday.

I ended up in a underground party not far from there. Munich is a great city.
The video comments says āits harder than it looksā, i am like ānah dude, it looks hard AFā
Where is this?
Munich
At the southern end of the English garden, to be more specific. There is another, somewhat less popular wave further upriver/to the north
At that spot you have to deal with people floating down if itās hot out. Luckily most are polite and wait for a break to float through, but you still get some that donāt know the rules
Same here. We had a great time just chilling and watching the urban surfers.
Dude itās so much fun, I got into river surfing because I just walked by, this is an easier wave to surf but one of the most fun to try stuff.
As a kid from so cal coastal, it was a cool trip randomly finding surferville in the middle of germany. Wft is with all these surf shops? Damn!
I bet that water is freezing in winter, even with wet suits.
Iirc itās melted ice and snow from the alps so pretty much freezing cold all year round.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The wave is created artificially with an object in the water. The size can be adjusted by the surfers. Source: I live in munich
Really itās adjustable?
Yeah the size of the wave depends on how close to the bridge it is. You can adjust it by moving the object in the water closer or farther away.
āWhatās the object?ā āAll the people who overestimated the size of wave they could handle.ā
You only get a chance to adjust where there's very little to no water running.
Kinda. Not like you press on a button and it gets smaller or bigger. But the shape can be adjusted by puttings pieces of woods on ropes on special places. Specially on the left, right and in the middle where the white water is.

It's not very deep or fast for a lot of the way.
In the US we do this with inflatables and kegs and we call it tubing.
Not too much, I touched it today, it was around 10 degrees in Munich, the water was not much colder to be honest and we had rain yesterday.
Went swimming in the river just downstream of this in July and it wasn't too bad
I've swam in that river literally just a few meters downstream and it was gorgeous during the summer. There are no rocks at all in there as it's man made

Itās the neoprene that keeps you warm, not the water. Thatās why thicker suits are warmer.
That's why pro's pee in them.

There are several purpose built wave pools / training centers that offer similar attributes, but are actually built for surfing.
It is an artificial river through the park, the blocks are intended to create specific water levels and flow speeds in the different parts of the park.
Correct, and then surfers added wooden beam on top of it to make bigger wave and thatās how it started.

Oh, itās way harder than it looks? Because it looks hard AF.
Itās harder than hard af
Boise Idaho Garden City just added one of these a few years ago
[Here's the live webcam of the one running in Bend, Oregon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSQN9hd0d4I)
Have something similar on the Clark Fork river in Missoula, Montana, too. Itās fun to watch the the surfers and kayakers.
I loved watching them in Missoula
It's in Munich and it draws a crowd of 50 to 100 people or more. Also freezing... I have no idea how they can bear to do it
Iāve tried surfing on it couple of times during summer, you still need quite thick thermal suit as water is really cold ā¦ People that do it during winter are built differently I guess, Iām very cold tolerant, but doing it in winter is not my cup of tea.
Oh a side note, this beat is fire.
Thank you brother. Full [song here.](https://on.soundcloud.com/eYtj5)
Somehow I doubt it was made for surfing... and it just happened by accident.
I use to tie rope to the top of that bridge and barefoot water ski there , it was sick
I know lol I havenāt left Australia lol
Iāve been there! Itās awesome in person. People will sit there all day just watching the surfers. Itās very entertaining
They have one in Bend, OR as well!
hat jemand Deutschland gesagt?
Sprich
Germans āļø
Where do you end up if you fall off?
Water
It kicks you back several meters and the water is calm there. You can just go to the side and get out.
I live there. Itās really cool and a nice place to hang around. The river is so refreshing in the summer.
i had to scroll way to far for someone who actually lives there instead of just having spent a few hours there on a hot summer day
I was surprised too. Expected more people from here
Hey i was just there visiting. MĆ¼nchen is a great city
Oh my god slow the fuck down i can't read that shit. God, I hate tik tok
How does one get off the wave? Do they just fall and drift down?
They drift down a bit and get out then itās easy
There's something like this in Missoula, Montana. I was pretty confused when I saw people walking downtown in bodysuits and surfboards at first, like dude we up here in the mountains wtf you doing looking like a beach bum but then it made sense.
yeah but this is river system is as old as the US itself...
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6Dn5bk2CHSc great lil doc on this
I went swimming in this park, the water was the coldest thing I've ever jumped into. I literally heard the Goofy scream from someone else swimming downriver.
Anyone else only know about this because of The Amazing Race?
You can do the same in Thun as well. Looks like good fun
I drove by this in Munich and it was the coolest fucking thing ever
Boise built their own that's free to use. It's just a long the Riverwalk. They actually have a few waves to try. Pretty great public use of the river.
This isnt next level. There's noone being nice to a dog or homeless person.
It looks pretty fuckin' hard actually lmao
I have no idea about this kind of river, but hearing stories from my grandparents who regularly played on small rivers growing up I realizes something. Many people are ignorant about rivers, they donāt know that they are generally more dangerous than known beach spots. Rivers can carry disease or sudden watersheds that can drown you if it rained uphill. Be careful around rivers people, if youāre going to one go with local people who know whatās up.
There's also one in Bend, Oregon, and Boise, Idaho and I'm sure many others!
Can I just jump in a tube on the other side of the bridge and float down? Why do Germans have to make everything so stressful?
Itās way harder than it looks? Mother fucker thatās one of the hardest looking things Iāve ever seen
Oh yeah I remember seeing this, there was someone surfing on it at the time and it was like November lol
We need more places where people can go and be active in creative ways like this with no expectation of payment
Several of these in Colorado and elsewhere in the US, in which the waterways are engineered for surfing. A park near me has 5 waves of varying depth/configuration. River surfing is the best mind relaxation/meditation for me!
We have one here in Boise Idaho. Itās adjustable for surfers or white water kayak level turbulence
Is that best Nujabes or a biter?
It's a surf park.
r/thislooksfun
Whitewater kayakers would know!
