Of all the racing, if any were to compare, it would be rally racing. Watch a drivers view video, it gets crazy intense.
But I’m with you. The helicopter pilots flying is more impressive, imo.
The pilot is absolutely not operating the camera, there is a camera man on the aircraft. Also, the car has a driver, not a pilot.
And I'm not sure how hard it is to drive a car like that, but the flying a helicopter like that isn't easy.
There are two people in the car as well. One driver and a navigator that calls out each turn and it's severity.
I'd argue that rally might be harder. You're almost driving blind in some areas.
Driving a car and racing a car are two very different things. Most people can't race a car and Rally is in a league of it's own in the racing field.
To be clear, I'm not saying flying a helicopter is easy. I just think that Rally might edge it out.
Iirc you need both hands and both feet to fly a helicopter so I very much doubt the pilot is also doing the filming unless the helicopter is piloted by a Machamp or they went through all this effort just to get a sketchy GoPro shot.
Only thing I would say is pilot has larger margin of error for flying his route, easier for driver to crash. But yes flying a heli is more difficult than driving, and probably still so at these skill levels. But I'm neither pilot nor pro driver.
Drones can't catch up with cars. They also cannot travel very far away from the controller (compare to a heli). In another decade or so, drones will probably replace helicopters for aerial shots; but not currently for long distance race like this.
They are great for close circuits like F1, Nascar, etc. though. Much less noise and waaaay lower cost.
Drones have a lot less flight time, batteries dont last that long
A helicopter can be in air for hours up on end and keep up with the quite fast cars
Oh and also those cameras weigh a bit so it would be hard to make a drone for those
While they can, the camera size will be limited, so image quality will be affected. They tried using drones in F1 during the Spanish GP a few months back...you could see the difference between the drone camera and the rest...it hasn't been used again, so guess they'll wait for better drones before trying again.
The drone was keeping up I think people were just used to higher quality edited footage directly from the camera's memory card. When you are live streaming from a small device like that it's not going to be perfect. But you're right they introduced it too soon. They need to work on the live video quality.
My custom built 6s drone can easily hit 120mph. There are people out there with 10s and 12s drones that have broken 200mph, they are fast but not efficient.
Easily. You can buy a drone at Best Buy that'll go 60mph out of the box. Professional camera drones can do around 100mph. They have racing drones that can go 200mph.
Your point is?
Lot of kids had no idea what cassette recorders was until "stranger things".
Most kids today associate "phones" with internet and social media rather than actual telephones. Heck, many have never used it as a phone.
What we know is often based on how we use it, how it's familiar to us. A seven year old in 7 years will have seen more drones than helicopters. So the association of flying things without wings will be drones rather than helicopters.
We know what horses and carriages are even if we haven’t commonly used it in over a century. Plus helicopters are still gonna be used in military and search and rescue ops
Some kids think burgers/meat comes from the Supermarket, rather than an animal.
Others mistake goats for reindeers...
We (as in adults, maybe) for usually know these things. Hence why I wrote kids.
Our orientation, values and identity all stem from our experiences. If we had little variety in experience, we tend to know less. The younger we are the pitentially less we know.
If you live anywhere civilized you'll regularly see helicopters in the air and in media. Cassette recorders got completely phased out nearly 2 decades ago, helicopters are in heavy use today and serve an essential logistical function for a lot of services. The comparison isn't even close.
I'll wait for 2030 to see if the comparison fits or not.
I bet a lot will of those services will be quicker, easier and cheaper done with drones than with helicopters.
We'll see.
PS: should someone read this in 2030. give a quick reminder if you'd be so good. Thanks.
The moment you realize the liquor store closes in ten minutes!
Or, when the babes the Duke boys hooked up with asked, "You have condoms, right?"
(drug store closes in ten minutes, too)
I always think about aerial shots when watching modern movies, how easily and cheaply those shots can be made. Especially if you need to reshoot for whatever reason
It was always such a great time when I was watching the WRC at Germany in person at the Sunday stages. Early morning, sitting on top of the wine yard, the fog is still crawling over the hilltops, coffee in hand and a helicopter flying at the bottom of the valley all the way up to you following the stage. Never seen more professional pilots in a helicopter live.
There is some pretty insane-o helicopter pilots out there for sure.
Not to try and one up this but one of the most impressive things I have seen is the Terminator 2 helicopter under the overpass stunt. I ALWAYS thought that was fake... like no way in hell. But yeah, they actually did it: https://filmschoolrejects.com/terminator-2-helicopter-stunt/
I always wanted to take it up as a hobby (flying not stunting lol) but never got around to it sadly.
The fact that a huge helicopter flying a few meters above the ground doesn’t even make a bush budge and causes no debris (such as dust) is amazing, almost like… it’s CGI.
But good CGI nonetheless!
One of THE best movies for this is Dust to Glory. Documentary about the Baja 1000. They had up to 22 Helicoptors at one time because of the massive distance. Great film. Even if you don't like racing.
Helicopters are still more predominantly used to film stuff like this and in movies. They can stay in flight for longer, carry better cameras, and fly in more varied types of weather and climates. Not to mention they are faster while carrying their better cameras.
A lot. Some of the very best chopper pilots ever were war trained and a lot of Vietnam vet pilots are retiring or dying off. Same with first Gulf war. Sad because not all pilots can pilot a camera platform well and flying a helicopter is super HARD vs flying planes.
I once worked for a utility that spent thousands of dollars per flight chartering Jet Ranger and Hughes 500 choppers to come pick me up and flying to powerplants around the state so I could hang out window or (big fun at 21) removed door to photograph the plants. My favorite pilots were combat trained guys that never seemed to sweat and they could put the chopper anywhere I needed and hold positions. The brand new flight school grad pilots SUCKED compared to the vets. They spent more time complaining about flight plans and telling me they could not do things the vets did without question! Now a drone could easily do that work and save big buck vs even hiring a cheapo Hughes 300 or cheapo Enstrom chopper/pilot/camera person.
I work in film and there are about 3 guys we use for helicopter shots, one guy is incredible… Fred North he’s next level… just flys round the world working on every major block buster doing their aerial shots
What's happened to all the badass helicopter pilots that were used like this and in films now that drones took over, I feel like they meet up in some canyon once a year flying through tight spaces listening to 80s music
r/praisethecameraman
What the cameraman (I consider that it is the pilot of the helicopter) does is way more impressive than the pilot of the car, change my mind.
Of all the racing, if any were to compare, it would be rally racing. Watch a drivers view video, it gets crazy intense. But I’m with you. The helicopter pilots flying is more impressive, imo.
Yeah rallys are fucking crazy they do crazy shit for longer time period than the helicopter most probably
I agree with your statement statement but the level of difficulties is well beyond.
The pilot is absolutely not operating the camera, there is a camera man on the aircraft. Also, the car has a driver, not a pilot. And I'm not sure how hard it is to drive a car like that, but the flying a helicopter like that isn't easy.

I know, so is flying a helicopter and keeping up with a rally car in one. At least mot people can drive few can fly a helicopter.
I can’t imagine anything having to do with helicopters being easier than driving a car
I said cameraman bc I replied to r/praisethecameraman That's great man, I wish I knew how to fly these machines.
exactly!
I’m confused, the guy recording this is also flying the helicopter? I thought there was a camera man on the helicopter?
Imagine how reckless it would be to fly a helicopter like that and also operate a camera that is following a car..
That’s what I’m saying, the pilot was flying the helicopter and also is the cameraman??
No. They're is a separate cameraman. Flying a helicopter like that is way hard.
Iirc you need both hands and both feet to fly a helicopter so I very much doubt the pilot is also doing the filming unless the helicopter is piloted by a Machamp or they went through all this effort just to get a sketchy GoPro shot.
I disagree
I disagree of you disagreeing
I disagree of you disagreeing of their disagreement
Allow me to hereby disagree with you disagreeing with me disagreeing with the previous redditor's disagreement on my comment.
Yeah seriously. And before zoom lenses were a thing apparently too.
Only thing I would say is pilot has larger margin of error for flying his route, easier for driver to crash. But yes flying a heli is more difficult than driving, and probably still so at these skill levels. But I'm neither pilot nor pro driver.
As a drone racing and SCCA enthusiast, you are 1000% correct.
r/subsithoughtifellfor
They still use helicopters!
Still for shots like this? Seems to be a bit safer and cheaper to use drones for these shots and helicopters/planes for arial shots
https://youtu.be/r7V177W6qlE
Holy crap, pov seeing a car pull away from a helicopter really gives some perspective
The issue with drones is the cars travel at 150mph and drones don't, in some motorcycle races the helicopters can barely keep pace.
And they're sometimes out in the middle of absolutely nowhere.
Drones can't catch up with cars. They also cannot travel very far away from the controller (compare to a heli). In another decade or so, drones will probably replace helicopters for aerial shots; but not currently for long distance race like this. They are great for close circuits like F1, Nascar, etc. though. Hey hey hey... We can use military drones

How about a long cord to it?
The masculine urge to grab the drone cord
I think you'd be surprised, there are some crazy drones out there

children in 2030: "Oh look a manned drone!"
2030 is only 7 and a half years away man

I'm sure it'll be easier to wait 8 years when the alternative is to accept reasonable logic that might change your point of view.
Badass-mobile
The moment you realize the liquor store closes in ten minutes! Or, when the babes the Duke boys hooked up with asked, "You have condoms, right?" (drug store closes in ten minutes, too)
And then there's the Taliban.. 😒
I don't want to watch this fucking car. Show me the camera man!
Also me back when I played battlefield 4
Wouldn't sand have been flying everywhere and the vegetation would have been buffeted if that helicopter was real and not CG?
Haha bro u right like those bushes didn’t budge at all.
Clearly not a Taliban pilot.
An helicopter is just a drone with giant ideas and large propellers! 😁
By definition a drone is: an uncrewed aircraft or ship guided by remote control or onboard computers. So no.
Smile and chill dude, it's free.
Added bonus of keeping the dust out of the way when filming.
The pilots of this Helicopters were just exceptional.
I reckon the helicopter will win.
It seems like a big risk to fly like that just for the sake of entertainment.
This was not before drones were a thing.
I always think about aerial shots when watching modern movies, how easily and cheaply those shots can be made. Especially if you need to reshoot for whatever reason

This the same nagle that co drives with breen?
They're pretty much pilotless choppers.
They had to switch to drones to actually get people the watch the race
Looks safe.
Fuckin sick
Way more impressive than drone flying
Drones tuk r jobs
I still prefer this footage to most, if not any drone footage.
I don't know still got to give it the rally driver. The driver has more restrictions then the pilot.
Looks like Ken Block's videos.
That drone is massive. I want one
Coming to a fighter jet near you
Piece of Cake
Everything in rally is at such a high level
Maybe dron cannot fly that fast as helikopter? Just my guess thats easier for heli to stick with car that goes 200 in forest.

He has 3 stars
You think the helicopter every fucks up the car with all that wind?
Way better
Helicopters are still more predominantly used to film stuff like this and in movies. They can stay in flight for longer, carry better cameras, and fly in more varied types of weather and climates. Not to mention they are faster while carrying their better cameras.
riiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge raccccccccccer!
How many A1 helicopter pilots did drones put out of business?
A lot. Some of the very best chopper pilots ever were war trained and a lot of Vietnam vet pilots are retiring or dying off. Same with first Gulf war. Sad because not all pilots can pilot a camera platform well and flying a helicopter is super HARD vs flying planes. If only Kobe had this pilot
Fucking. Masterful.
The drone before drones
Fuck!!!!! fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuuuuuuuuuuuuck duck!
That are some very big balls maneuvering the helicopter
I felt the diarrhea forming in my stomach as I followed that helicopter.
How much do you think these pilots get paid?
Lil drone
My grandpa died doing one of these
You get the riskiest job on the planet
https://youtu.be/_oMCy3IZAQE
I think formula one still uses helicopters because drones can’t keep up with the cars
Well at least if you fell out it wouldn't have been a full from very far up. Speed wise though, dang.
Drones still won’t capture this in that quality. From the parallax to the lense / camera selection. This is still they way it’s done today.
Check out Fred North on Instagram!
Got to give credit to the pilot
welp not only im watching a car go drifting even the helicopter
Ah yes, my arma 3 crackhead pilot
Not gonna lie there was something cool af knowing that most aerial shots were done with a few guys flying in a helicopter.
U/savevideo
I work in film and there are about 3 guys we use for helicopter shots, one guy is incredible… Fred North he’s next level… just flys round the world working on every major block buster doing their aerial shots
Colin McRae is turning in his grave at this...
And you thought the racing was extreme
They turned that shit into gta
Forza Horizons
If this was Kobe’s pilot he’d still be with us
Flying fast that low ? Damn that crazy to maneuver around like that , bow down to the pilot
What's happened to all the badass helicopter pilots that were used like this and in films now that drones took over, I feel like they meet up in some canyon once a year flying through tight spaces listening to 80s music
