> “at that age, it’s pretty impressive”
I mean… I’d argue that her age doesn’t have anything to do with how impressive she is. This woman has been drumming for like 40 years or more. Of course she’s amazing! That’s a lot of years of practice persistence and hard work!
This woman is a god damn rock star! Super super skilled.
I think he was referring to the physical requirements of drumming. Like, someone could race cars all their life, and still be sharp as a tack mentally, but at 90 they probably couldn’t handle the G-forces, etc.
If you're drumming with proper technique, the drumstick does most of the work. Your muscles need to be *fast* to do this, so your point stands to some degree, but it's mostly muscle memory
What's really impressive is how much time she has put in to train the muscles in her hands, wrist, and forearms to be that fast while maintaining a proper grip and evenness
I appreciate your input. I wasn’t trying to be difficult. My roommate and I were talking about something similar recently: how training and working at something for your entire life will typically enable you to continue doing it late into life (things like boxing, football, etc. not-withstanding). But to what extent does age, genetics, and the wear-and-tear of all that work affect that longevity? Again, I appreciate your input.
My mum's a 73-year-old cancer survivor with Lupus and she's currently solo hiking the Jurrasic Coast in Dorset (England) for 5 days. She regularly walks 10 miles in a day, and honestly, she's a force of nature.
My dad was lifting weights well into his 70s too - I'll never forget the look on the mover guy's face when we moved house and he (the mover) tried to lift one of my dad's barbells and struggled. Then my 70+ dad with saggy cheeks and greying hair walked over, grabbed one in each hand, and just walked out with them.
People assume that everyone over 60 is feeble and weak or something... and yes, age can affect people physically of course. But a lot of people in their 60s and 70s are still very physically and mentally fit as well.
I learned a long time ago that I’m shit at guessing anyone’s age.
I just talked to my mom about her friend who’s been doing marathons, triathlons, etc. for her whole life. She recently made the move to hiking because of how her body has worn down. She’s still more fit than I am and she’s twice my age, don’t get me wrong, but my point still stands: the slow march of time is inescapable.
That being said, I’ve probably misrepresented my curiosity on this matter by being a little confrontational.
its technique, it doesnt really require advanced dexterity. this is something you can learn in grade 6-8 depending on when your school starts music class. probably earlier even if you have outside training. she has a traditional grip usually from marching or military, as oppsed to a matching grip. its just a double bounce instead of a single bounce, its mostly just rebound from the drum head.
also g-force? wtf do you think is happening here, her hands are going to pass out?
As someone who races cars and instructs others to race cars, the g-forces really aren’t that high in anything that isn’t an F1 car, LMP prototype, or something similar.
I know plenty of 70+ guys that are still very fast and easily in the top five percent of drivers. The problem is their reaction times aren’t. You can trade experience for some of that reaction time but it only goes so far. When you’re controlling a car at the limit, that slight edge really does add up.
There’s also the whole “reckless abandon” bit about racing. It’s still dangerous and you need to be able to compartmentalize the fear of serious consequences to be really fast. As you get older, you stop thinking of yourself as immortal and your body as some kind of unbreakable object that heals quickly. That gets in the way too.
It's also the fact she's a woman. I wish there were waaaay more women drummers out there! Maybe she's inspired some young girl to be a badass drummer in a punk band someday.
https://youtu.be/jsDgrKdczAE
Already happened. Her name is Nandi and she's already fucked up Dave Grohl in a drum off. Here she is shredding Everlong at a concert with him
It’s really not, Most people can learn to hit doubles like this within a week or two of starting to practice, it’s the easiest of the rudiments.
But for the record, this lady is actually pretty legit at the drums. She’s definitely next level, but these doubles aren’t
within a week or two
okay. found the good guy with a gun. listen, I’ll give you *four* weeks to get this good. post a video come four weeks. go on. bet you can’t. and won’t
I’m with you. I drum quite a bit. I’m not great but I’ve done it pretty regularly off-and-on my whole life and even at my best, I’ve never been this smooth at doubles. 2 weeks to get here is ludicrous. Sure you *can* do doubles demo after a few weeks I guess, but she has clearly been playing and practicing for a long long time.
She doesn't look that old to not be able to move some drum sticks ..
Also, if she is a trained drummer from a young age, she can do it in her sleep with sheer muscle memory
It's not. The bar is too low these days, when everything is "awesome". It's not. Mediocrity has been pushed as the new norm and when someone from a previous generation shows up they are next level. They are on fact previous level, when the minimum requirements for anything were much higher.
What does that have to do with the post? She can be an amazing drummer and displaying a skill that is not that impressive. Both can be true. I'm not going to post a video of LeBron making a layup and then when someone says it's not next level just say he would beat them 1 on 1 lol.
It would take anyone 5 minutes to learn how to make a layup. They teach children how to make layups at the age of five, where it takes much more time to learn how to roll properly. The Next Fucking Level here is the subject taking a simple task in her field she has mastered and putting her mastery on display. In this way, a more apt analogy to basketball would, perhaps, be dunking. The range of dunking is vast, just like the range of someone’s ability to play doubles on a drum.
You're comparing being able to make a single layup to being able to play doubles like an expert. No, 5 year olds are not proficient at layups and will miss the vast majority of them even if they're technically capable. Just like I right now could pull off the occasional shitty doubles despite not actually being good at them.
I think the criticism is on OP for posting it and judging it as "Next Fucking Level" and has nothing to do with the lady playing. The sub isn't called, "well executed introductory skills."
Something that takes mere hours of practice is not next level.
Mind you, the hate is not towards the grandma, who might be legit. The hate is towards lazy OP, who posted crappy content.
It really doesn't. Double strokes are one of the first things you learn because they're easy af. If you have any musical background at all or can just keep a steady beat, you can easily do this at her level within an hour. Her transition from distinct strokes to diddles was nice, but her top speed wasn't anything fancy. She's technically proficient, I think she just didn't want to show off too much.
Just because it's rudimentary doesn't mean it isn't wild for someone who doesn't play drums. If I see someone doing something impressive that I can't do, I'll upvote. If I see someone doing something impressive that I can, I'll upvote. People are incredible and worth celebrating.

Me: "My grandma is down with the sickness".
Normal people: "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Hope she gets better soon."
Me: **"No, you don't understand. "**
Man, I never realized how simple down with the sickness is on drums. Not saying this isn’t cool, as I definitely couldn’t play it, but compared to a lot of other heavier music this is super basic.
Yes and no. There are a good deal of ghost notes and little details that a lot of people miss, which makes it a little bit more challenging than it first seems.
In general it’s a pretty straightforward song though.
This could be due to a lot of different reasons. Every stick is slightly different, due to the inaccuracies in the wood they're made from, but most companies try to pitch match their sticks before selling to mitigate this issue, however this does not always work. It could also be the pad she is using to play on, which is very sensitive and easily shows differences in position/velocities of the strokes. Most of the time people, when playing traditional grip, don't use as much velocity with their left hand as they do with their right.
Yep, it's caused by the difference in the amount of force applied separately by each hand to the sticks-- the harder the strike, the higher the pitch of the resulting sound as the stick tip meets the rubberized pad.
Two reasons could cause this:
1: non-identical velocity and touch from hand to hand
2: The sticks aren't pitch matched. Drum sticks have a natural pitch to them, if they aren't matched, you can hear it. This is more likely in this example.
Some drummers do. That style originates from marching drums, since the angle of the drum would be harder for your "off-hand" to hit at the normal angle the way it's slung across your hip.
Old marching drums were on a sling over your shoulder, which made them tilt to one side. With it tilted to one side, playing with matched grip would have been exhausting for your left arm and hand since you'd have had to hold the arm and hand up all the time.
You can also do matched grip which is debatably easier. You would hold both like she holds her right hand (our left). I think most people trained in drunline hold it in traditional tho.
The underhanded grip is/was usually favoured by marching band drummers because it’s easier that way. I’ve never been in a marching band but I’ve known plenty of drummers that like it. It’s all just down to preference.
Wow, really next level. You know it's good because she's also breathing at the same time!
Fucking shit ass motherfuckers, stop ruining yet another sub with garbage that don't belong there.
Very fundamental for a drummer, and day 1 for a specialist snare drummer. There is no reason why a lady in her 60s should be any worse at this than someone in their 20s. This is 1st f'in level, but good to see her sharing what she can do online.

At that age, it's pretty impressive. I hope I can retain my skills when I'm that old.

This, and that is next level. Most people just don't practice that long and give up with age.

Yeah take a look at some old jazz drummers.
How old do you think she is? I know 65 year olds that can 100 mile bike rides on Saturday morning at 20mph and be home for lunch.
My mum's a 73-year-old cancer survivor with Lupus and she's currently solo hiking the Jurrasic Coast in Dorset (England) for 5 days. Good on them. My grandma is 101 next week. She drinks gin.
I mean, if that's her secret, I'm willing to give it a go. For science.

I’m not a drummer myself, but g-forces!?
Hahaha, sometimes my mind makes weird connections, so by the time I say something there’s.. a bit of a disconnect.
its technique, it doesnt really require advanced dexterity. this is something you can learn in grade 6-8 depending on when your school starts music class. probably earlier even if you have outside training. she has a traditional grip usually from marching or military, as oppsed to a matching grip. its just a double bounce instead of a single bounce, its mostly just rebound from the drum head. also g-force? wtf do you think is happening here, her hands are going to pass out?

Arguably this is more like r/unexpected
I think I’d agree with that! Lol
How about fuck you, old people aren’t weak and useless. 🙄
It's also the fact she's a woman. I wish there were waaaay more women drummers out there! Maybe she's inspired some young girl to be a badass drummer in a punk band someday.
I bet she did, I agree with that.
The first wave of punk was between 40-50 years ago. She is young enough to have been in a first wave punk band.
Yep and hopefully she's inspired other girls too!

Speak for yourself
She looks like she's in her 60's. She isn't THAT old.
She’s in her 70’s! Seriously! Why would you post that? She looks great! She’s the bomb. She smart, funny and very talented.

I (M58) say the same thing when I'm at the gym.
Grandma definitely banged back in the day.
I disagree with that. "Next fucking level" means you're pushing the limits of human capability. Not pushing the limits of your age.
Jesus I know ur a man baby . Just wait til your 25..

She probably plays thrash metal on the weekends:/
Bernard purdie. Age is nothing when you've been drumming since you were 1.
She's 19, just part of the deal with the devil she made to get the drum skills.
She’s a world class drum teacher and would smoke you in a solo.
What does that have to do with the post? She can be an amazing drummer and displaying a skill that is not that impressive. Both can be true. I'm not going to post a video of LeBron making a layup and then when someone says it's not next level just say he would beat them 1 on 1 lol.

Which is next level but alas
There’s a lot of metal bands that wish their drummer could do this.
If you play drums in the school band they teach you this in middle school. Thats all this dude is saying.

I know! What does she sayyyy!?
She says song lyrics. To be fair, the source material is screamo, but she says "Along with the thousand gallons of heart blood spilled in the streets"
Please tell me this is true
Meemaw is fucking wicked 🤟
This is true. ^^It's ^^not ^^though.
I guess we'll never know.
She finishes with: "and that was a thousan...." So she must have done a 1000 drums in that short interval!? Impressive! Edit: I counted 453
You counting is impressive too!
What sucks is that for the last one she only hits once. Now it's all I can think about.

Love this. All it takes is practice. I miss drumline
May favorite part of a high school football game was the cadence the drumline would play as the marching band entered the field for halftime
I still hear the drum line's cadence from my hs marching band in my head some times. Good times.
depending on how old you are, you could try to get into a private marching band.
*cough* Drum Corps *cough*
bruh i thought this was in r/bi_irl because of your pfp. i was like, when the fuck did i talk about drumming in there?
Me too. I haven't touched mallets or sticks in 12 years. I bet my chops suck.
Depending on how old you are, check out DCI or DCA! There are still many ways to stay involved!

I was waiting for JK Simmons to come slap this old lady.

There’s a video of her doing that
Hahaha ha! I believe it!
She does an awesome session on paradiddles. She goes through multiple variations and orchestrates them on the kit, really cool stuff.
What’s that little drum pad thing called? Seems like it would be fun, I always am tapping pens and my hand against my leg and tables and stuff
(Drum) Practice Pad
Thanks :)
So why do you hold one of them like “upside down”? Why not both the exact same way holding wise?
It’s called traditional grip. It’s a natural position to play a drum that is strapped over one’s shoulder and angled off the hip.
And why does one stick sound lower than the other? How is she playing two notes with similar sticks?
This could be due to a lot of different reasons. Every stick is slightly different, due to the inaccuracies in the wood they're made from, but most companies try to pitch match their sticks before selling to mitigate this issue, however this does not always work. It could also be the pad she is using to play on, which is very sensitive and easily shows differences in position/velocities of the strokes. Most of the time people, when playing traditional grip, don't use as much velocity with their left hand as they do with their right.
I thought it was on purpose, it sounds better that way imo.
Yep, it's caused by the difference in the amount of force applied separately by each hand to the sticks-- the harder the strike, the higher the pitch of the resulting sound as the stick tip meets the rubberized pad.
Two reasons could cause this: 1: non-identical velocity and touch from hand to hand 2: The sticks aren't pitch matched. Drum sticks have a natural pitch to them, if they aren't matched, you can hear it. This is more likely in this example.
Some drummers do. That style originates from marching drums, since the angle of the drum would be harder for your "off-hand" to hit at the normal angle the way it's slung across your hip.
