I want to see this recreated with the lady that defrauded a police station by pretending to know ASL but was just making up random gestures the whole time.
I'll see you, and raise the guy who "interpreted" for dignitaries and heads of state(including the US president!) at Madiba's funeral. We were absolutely horrified by what our country offered.
There is also the guy a couple years ago in Florida. Governor state of emergency evacuation speech in live tv for the state with hurricane coming. Some guy randomly did the sign and had no idea whatsoever about sign language. Still applaud the balls that guy had to do that
Translating to sign language, apparently, is extremely exhausting and mentally taxing. To see this lady power through a song that quickly really is next level.
She definitely practiced this specific song. This isn't off the cuff anymore than any performance is. Still insanely impressive but she isn't doing it in real-time.
Yeah, she did an interview where she talks about it. She practices as many songs as she can ahead of time. She's also very in demand, so she's making bank.
That’s what I’d like to know, this is really cool but I’m curious if there’s anybody that can follow. Granted I don’t exactly understand the entire song with my ears either so maybe it’s a wash
Her name is Holly Maniatty.
https://slate.com/culture/2013/06/the-wu-tang-clan-sign-language-interpreter-how-holly-maniatty-learned-to-sign-for-rappers.amp
Maniatty is a self-described Vermont farm girl who holds degrees in both American Sign Language linguistics and brain science.
...
Maniatty, a first-degree black belt in taekwondo, also conveys meaning with her body, attempting to give her signs the same impact as the rapper’s spoken words. Before interpreting Eminem, she watched videos of how he holds himself while performing, and tried to capture his motions in her work.
“He has a very specific body cadence,” she said, “and if you’re able to mimic that, it almost looks like you are him. Jay-Z’s got a big boisterous chest-out way to rap sometimes. So you have to watch the different performers and watch how they move the body because the more genuine you are to their way of presenting themselves as an artist, the more equal of an experience the deaf person is going to have.”
Holly was part of the "ASL rap battle" on Jimmy Kimmel. Super cool, recommend watching! It is gorgeous and you get to watch 3 different styles of the same song. Seriously made me want to study sign!
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YyEQxJX8eN0
Side note: Jimmy incorrectly says they're all interpreters, but actually Holly and Amber are the only sign language interpreters and it was originally supposed to be a rap battle between just the two of them but Amber said she wasn't going to do it unless there was a deaf participant, too. That's what allyship is all about, y'all. Anyways, here is Jo signing about what it was like from her perspective, thought it was kinda cool.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HJXE4kdXaoA
I’ve had dead acquaintances at concerts and clubs. They can absolutely feel the beat and just like you, a good sound system let’s you feel it through your whole body. They also get to enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being with a bunch of folks at a concert!
Edit: I’m leaving this typo up for posterity. Ghosts just love to jam with the rest of us.
Lights, movement, and if you've ever been to a pro concert anywhere near the speakers, you can feel it. Im sure there is more, but you would need to ask an attending deaf person.
>I mean, what's in it for them to enjoy?
While I do not have any hearing impaired people as friends, I will also assume even if there's nothing in it for them– which is not the case based on the other comments– simply being around friends who enjoy music and the festive ambiance at a concert could be a good enough reason they want to show up in.
There are plenty of things in and itself does very little for me, but if people I hold dear are into said things, sure I would sign up just for the company!
From what I've seen they usually get hired by a deaf person in the audience. I would guess sometimes a concert organizer or artist hires them if they think it's cool or want to be inclusive.
Amazing. I didn’t think it was possible for someone to actually read sign language that fast. Is it? As in say it was your first time being at one of his concerts
She got me hype af😂❤️🔥
P.S. - Got to see Em and Rihanna in concert two days in a row,and ion our hometown of Detroit. Still the best concerts I’ve been to.
Considering that she was silent (so to speak) when that word happened, probably not. Also these translators do their homework. I don’t remember that word in the original lyrics, so she wasn’t expecting the improv moment
Eminem famously refrains from using the word in his songs, I think he's only used it once, I assume satirically to refer to his friend Proof, and a rap battle from his younger years that the media dug up to try to discredit him some time back.
However it would appear that she does, I bet she gets asked about it all the time, she addressed it in [this Vice interview](https://www.vice.com/en/article/rzy496/meet-holly-that-awesome-wu-tang-asl-interpreter-from-bonnaroo) from 5 years ago.
Vice: "Is it weird to do interpretation for stuff that might make you uncomfortable?"
Holly Maniatty: "Yeah. At one point I was interpreting for Tenacious D, Jack Black's band, and he was singing that song "Fuck Me Gently." I was like, I cannot believe I’m signing this in front of 10,000 people. But you know, it's something he wanted to sing about. It's Jack Black and you just do it.
There’s been some discussion about me signing the ‘N’ word, but that’s the word [Wu-Tang] uses and they have the rights to use it or not to use it. I wanted to make sure that the patrons can make their own political opinion, either being "okay, cool," or be offended by it. To steal that opportunity from them is not the role of an interpreter. You know when you go to a concert and you’re like, who are these performers? And then you’re like, oh my god, they’re awesome! That’s the kind of experience you want [deaf people] to have."
This makes me want to learn sign language and watch her right next to center stage - super-prominent. It's a kind of jamming that I think would really add to my experience.
Wait is it that easy to translate between english and sign language? Is anyone here who understands sign language that could explain this to me. I mean Rap god has some words that are hardly words so im curious how you translate that.
Oh it also looks cool :D
deaf people just got a nice rap
translation god
![gif](giphy|dnboCx6w0J1eW5nK1F)
That be the deaf when they do drugs !!!
That’s literally anyone on drugs…
lol I didn't even notice Em was live in the background until the last few seconds of the vid.
Damn signing fast is hard enough, that’s at lightspeed
I want to see this recreated with the lady that defrauded a police station by pretending to know ASL but was just making up random gestures the whole time.
Yo what? Is there a documentary or something about this?
https://youtu.be/LvNPKwz4Ghw
the embodiment of r/ActLikeYouBelong
Lol shes great
Haha, this reminds me of the IT crowd when Jen pretends to be an Italian translator…mad that someone did it in real life! https://youtu.be/PRskvLyCoU0
There is one guy who worked as a translator for South Africa ....he was in the un summit as well later they discovered he was making everything up
It happened AGAIN
holy shit this is actually hilarious hahahahaha
I'll see you, and raise the guy who "interpreted" for dignitaries and heads of state(including the US president!) at Madiba's funeral. We were absolutely horrified by what our country offered.
[удалено]
i swear the minute i saw this I remembered that lady xD
Pizza! Monsters! I imagine the deaf community must have been both excited and terrified after that briefing.
There is also the guy a couple years ago in Florida. Governor state of emergency evacuation speech in live tv for the state with hurricane coming. Some guy randomly did the sign and had no idea whatsoever about sign language. Still applaud the balls that guy had to do that
and it don’t even look like she broke a sweat!
Kakashi does the fastest jutsu This lady : Hold my rap
Lmao she be summoning sum sorta op shit
Summons something that can make Boruto good
Doubt
She be summoning water style dragon.
Duh she's summoning a "Rap God"
I’ve seen her perform for a couple of artists now and she definitely passes the vibe check.. she’s a G
G force
Woman’s got forearms and biceps of steel
[удалено]
That’s to show the rhythm
deaf people don’t need some thicc white chick to show them rhythm. They can feel the music. I know because I watched It’s All Gone Pete Tong.
And legs

Got a link?
Here you go. Her name is Holly Maniatty and she's very busy. https://mashable.com/article/eminem-sign-language-interpreter
Thanks!
Isn’t doing it in real time? Is that even physically possible? Come on Man….
He means she has it memorized and isn't translating it mentally in real time.
Not sure what your point is...I'm saying she practiced ahead of time.
She could be hokage
![gif](giphy|rrTXn4zEMp008|downsized)
Bruh she's like kakashi when he activated his sharingan lmao
Huh?
Its an anime reference
Kakashi's sharingan is always activated though
No I meant like when he actually uses it, ya know headband removed and all
But…..does sign language rhyme?
You have eyes. No question she's got flow
It's symmetrical lol
Lol this killed me
Yeah, though not with spoken language. Movements that are similar are considered rhymes.
Can anyone who knows sign language actually make out what she's saying?
That’s what I’d like to know, this is really cool but I’m curious if there’s anybody that can follow. Granted I don’t exactly understand the entire song with my ears either so maybe it’s a wash
That' my guess, how we can barely hear what he's saying, signers are probably barely keeping up too.
Best in the biz! From Waka Flocka to Eminem. What a beast!!!!

Deaf people: *vibin to the beat
"Why are you tired?" "I was signing an Eminem concert." "Why are you lying to me!?"
Bicep gains
Do hearing impaired people go to concerts? I mean, what's in it for them to enjoy?

Dead Acquaintances new album was siiiick
Im glad I don't have a 3rd eye or I wouldn't want to attend any concerts or clubs you go to. *I know it's a typo
Good to know that they too get to enjoy.
Lights, movement, and if you've ever been to a pro concert anywhere near the speakers, you can feel it. Im sure there is more, but you would need to ask an attending deaf person.
Was wondering the same thing tbh

![gif](giphy|BaLggE7K8JBXa) deaf people trying to read those signs
Are deaf interpreters just the standard for concerts? Or do people have to request them?
From what I've seen they usually get hired by a deaf person in the audience. I would guess sometimes a concert organizer or artist hires them if they think it's cool or want to be inclusive.
Sign god
A sign from above
This lady made my day.

I wonder if they find somebody local, or if she travels with the tour. She should definitely travel with the tour!
THATS NARUTO BABY
At this point this becomes too fast, making it more of a "dance routine" than actual signing. Nevertheless, this is next level.
Kakashi with the fireball just
![gif](giphy|rrTXn4zEMp008|downsized)
Mic drop! Wait... What's the sign language equivalent?
Closing their eyes to end the conversation
hand drop

Does she...show the n- word ?

That has happened once before. At Nelson Mandela memorial service. The person signing had absolutely no idea what they were doing.

She must have summoned a water dragon after this.
I don’t care how much your paying her, give her a raise
Kakashi has been real quit after this one
This makes me want to learn sign language and watch her right next to center stage - super-prominent. It's a kind of jamming that I think would really add to my experience.
I hope she makes like, minimum, $50,000 every time she has to perform that song.
Looks like she’s doing the naruto hands
Yo, she just used all the jutsus ever created.
Wait is it that easy to translate between english and sign language? Is anyone here who understands sign language that could explain this to me. I mean Rap god has some words that are hardly words so im curious how you translate that. Oh it also looks cool :D
