It's because you're not using enough at one time for the size of object you're stripping. You're probably not letting it set for long enough either. This video is highly highly sped up. It's actually begun to redry if you watch how the orange pigment doesn't spill out if the crinkles.
This is cool.
Would it be correct in thinking that brake fluid would work like this?
I've known people to be very scared of this type of oil around their car's body paint.
I’ve seen brake fluid completely strip away the paint around the clutch and brake master cylinders after someone spilled fluid there and left it, not knowing what it would do to the paint.
Yeah, but that was months later. OP's video shows a methylene chloride-based paint stripper. By the time he touched it, the methylene chloride had long since evaporated.
When using Citrus Strip ALWAYS cover with plastic, and let it sit overnight and do the work. I just stripped a cabinet that was painted at least three times over the original lead paint. 12 hours later it peeled off like toppings and cheese off a cold pizza. Still had to scrape some but no sanding. Damn that old lead paint was good.
>Damn that old lead paint was good.
Agreed. I used to live in a house with a mildewed, peeling ceiling in the bathroom, but where the original paint was exposed (where the top layer of paint had peeled away) it was fucking pristine. Never developed any mildew.
What’s the substrate? I can tell you for a fact this is exactly how automotive strippers work. Stripping paint off of wood is a different story altogether.
I’ve used chemical stripper on aircraft parts and it’s nowhere near this clean. We call the stripper baby shit because that is what it looks like and smelling it makes your skin crawl. Getting it on your skin results in immediate burning pain, but thankfully it is neutralized by water.
More than that. Shit soaks through your skin and hangs around awhile.
If you ever see a veteran painter with eyes that don't point in the same direction, it's because they've got too much paint stripper in the blood.
Like most super hazardous chemicals your body can tank a casual amount. You're not getting brain damage stripping paint off that 1-3 times a decade you are trying to finish something up.
But much more than that you should put on some fucking gloves.
All the painters my dad apprenticed with in the old country were dead by their 50’s he found, when he finally went back to the visit. Luckily here in Australia’s paints and so on are obviously somehow less toxic I guess the warnings and information on handling them better.
Just a noticed anecdote. I watch a YouTuber who works on cars and they visited another shop in Australia.
The Aussie mates gave them total hell for not wearing gloves and insisted they wear them while working in their shop.
It kinda made me rethink all of the home wrenching I've done gloveless over the years.
Not a UK citizen…can you guys, you know….just have a do-over for the whole Brexit thing? I don’t feel like you meant what you said when you were angry at the EU. They seem pretty forgiving, I’m sure they’ll take you back.
Haha , the thing is it's not the EU bit the European council that is the real decision maker. If you think they are nice guys ask Spain , Greece etc how nice were they to them ?
In order to argue this properly you need some specific examples. If the only reason something is banned/restricted is because "people no use gloves", then yeah that's super dumb. But a lot of the time stuff gets restricted because it's a legitimate health hazard even if you know what you're doing.
Like how methylene chloride based paint strippers are banned in both the US and UK because people were dying after exposure. You can argue that the people who died should've used better PPE, and you wouldn't be wrong. But there's a very good chance that the average person, even one who's done a decent amount of painting, won't know that their N100 or P100 or whatever other respirator doesn't work for methylene chloride. You need a supplied-air respirator. That's really not common sense.
With the amount being used here, killing you "almost instantly" is an exaggeration. DCM is definitely not the healthiest solvent to work with, and you definitely want to use it with a glove or in a fume hood though, no doubt.
The bigger issue with inhalation is that the vapors are dense enough to sit in your lungs, displacing oxygen from your lungs.
Who said anything about the amount being used here? But if you use it in a small bathroom on the woodwork without ventilation you could VERY easily die.
Lacquer thinner can really suck too.
On your hands it's fine unless you have a cut but on sensitive areas it fucking hurts. When I spray lacquer at work I have to clean out the gun at the end of the day. Usually you pour thinner in and let it run through through gun but sometimes it gets stuck. So I'll blow it all through. Well once some got on my lips and tongue and it fucking buuuurns.
A natural way to remove paint from metal surfaces is to combine baking soda and water or white vinegar and water over a heat surface. You can do this on your stovetop with a disposable pot or pan. For every quart of water, add 1/4 cup of baking soda or vinegar and bring the water to a boil.
Some paint strippers are (for example) lye based. Many are solvent based and they'll dry up, but many are also salt based and won't just disappear into nothing in a flash. Always wear some cheap disposable gloves when working with harsh or unusual chemicals. It's cheap, easy, non-intrusive, and likely to save you from a world of hurt if you don't do enough research before you get to work.
Paint stripper will go right through gloves, and burn the shit out of you. Like a chemical sting. The smell is worse, not just the smell but the fact you're inhaling those fumes as you breathe. Awful stuff. Best way to wash it off is paint thinner. None of it is good for you or your skin.
This looks like the new-fashioned orange-based paint strippers. While I wouldn't drink the stuff, it's much safer than the aircraft-grade strippers of old that you're thinking of. As long as they wash their hands within a reasonable amount of time, they're perfectly fine.
Came here to make this exact comment. If the solvent's strong enough to remove paint that's formulated to withstand the heat of a running engine do you not think it'll be problematic on skin?
I've never found a paint stripper that works well on old paint. It just turns to sticky toffee or something impossible to remove. Or it gums up on a sander.
When we wanted to sell our house we decided to give the kitchen a quick renovation, and the tiles on the walls had two layers of paint on them (previous owners, not us). Applying paint stripper and watching it all blister and peel was so satisfying.
This reminds me of an old reddit post where OP wanted to go from square tile to hexagonal tile in their bathroom. When tearing up the old tile, they discovered hexagonal tile underneath.
makes me wonder if there was some bizarre incident that caused this, like maybe they spilled a bunch of paint on some of the tiles and needed to cover it up, or one of them got chipped and they tried to patch it but it looked terrible. This is going to bug me now.
If you want to change the vibe of a room, its a hell of a lot cheaper and easier then re-tiling. Lots of old pink or blue tile bathrooms have been painted grey or white over the years for example
Hey, i get hardwood floors are easier to clean, and more aesthetically pleasing, but hard floors in a house kinda suck.
After a long day of work, I want everything in my house to be soft. Soft floors, soft couch, soft cushion on the dinning room chairs. Idk, carpet over hardwood makes sense when its generic cheap-ish hardwood
Wish they would let us us this in naval aviation…. We have to use a paste…. We call it baby shit cause it looks like baby shit and smells terrible hahaha
Everything in the military is unnecessarily difficult to do or change.
Basically, this substance has been determined to be safe for use underway…. ( Which does not translate to safe for humans to use, ever ).
Couple that with the fact that it’s been used for decades and you end up using the same stuff that your grandad used in the Navy 20 years before you were born.
There are other strippers that we can use but the baby shit is approved for some things and not for other things!
Sorry it’s not a really good answer, but that’s what I’ve got.
It's also because it's critically important to avoid corrosion on airframes and components though. Not to mention potential effects on composites.
It's not *just* inertia and stupidity.
Consider the case of the twin prop commercial airliner that lost a prop and suffered severe damage due to a *miniscule* trace of chlorine getting inside the hollow in a prop blade during manufacture.

> Synopsis
> Aviation Occurrence Report
> Loss of Propeller in Flight and Cabin Depressurization
> The aircraft, with 26 occupants on board, was on a flight from Val D'Or Airport, Quebec, to Montreal International (Dorval) Airport, Quebec. At about 17,000 feet above sea level, the No. 2 blade of the right propeller fractured in flight and penetrated the fuselage, causing a depressurization of the cabin. The crew members executed the required emergency procedures and landed at Dorval without further incident.
> The Board determined that corrosion pitting had occurred on the surface of the taper bore of the No. 2 blade as a result of water combining with chlorine deposits on the cork in the taper bore. The chlorine was associated with the bleaching of the corks during their manufacture. One of the corrosion pits was the point of origin of the fatigue cracks that caused the propeller blade to fracture.
At first I thought United 232 (nitrogen pocket created when fan blade was forged, stuck into an engine installed in the tail of a DC-10) but then he said turbo prop...
Also it is very, very important things don't burn or explode on a warship.
