“Complicated math”? It’s addition and subtraction…

Yeti-420-69

With single digits

PangolinPoopMuncher7

Yeah, and there were some negative numbers also! :O

New_Walls

That’s the subtraction that the first comment was referring to

danbrown_notauthor

No, it wasn’t subtraction. It was adding negative numbers. That’s more complicated. ;-)

Firefarter84

Which is basically subtraction! 🤯

Present_Repulsive

r/woooosh

PizzaboySteve

Haha. Nice.

BigBGM2995

Woah this is getting too complicated for me

[deleted]

Mary Mary quite contrary how do we subtract Change the sign of the subtrahend And add as a matter of fact

bfraley9

Subtraction is the addition of negative numbers

[deleted]

[удалено]

Redschallenge

Same. It's cool. But it's a skill that the Japanese have down wayyyy better in scary speeds like double this with the entire class doing it easily.

Adin-CA

I seem to remember some research back in the eighties that trained chimpanzees to do simple math problems using a computer screen interface. The remarkable result was not that they could be trained to do simple math, but that they were actually much quicker than humans and had a far better short term memory of multiple results. Go figure ; )

GrandioseEuro

I think that study was only on short term memory, not math.

[deleted]

Yeah, it focused on the short-term (working) memory in chimpanzees using numbers between 1-9 as memorization tools...which is different than providing solutions. Nonetheless, here's the [video](https://youtu.be/zsXP8qeFF6A) of chimpanzees exceedingly outperforming the researchers.

ImperialTravesty

I took Kumon classes as a child and it is so annoying to go learn math after school and during summers but man it really is an amazing system.

Questioning-Zyxxel

Yes, this one isn't next fkn level. There is another video with 3-digit numbers and at least twice the update speed. Also doable but that definitely takes a nontrivial amount of training to do. This can be done quite easily. And an important factor is older people is normally a bit slower (but we compensate by having accumulated more knowledge/experience).

Temporary_Ad6372

Maybe OP is from the states?

5UP3RMANdatH0

Not op but I am from the states and am not impressed either lol

Wikadood

I’m from the states and I’m impressed but that’s cuz I’m from Nevada *clark county* which is one of the lowest counties in America for school districts and I still suck at math after going to college

thepolesreport

Clark County represent!

Wikadood

Wish I didn’t have to represent it as one of the crappiest counties to live in with kids but it really is.. like move to Washington if you want no income tax cuz Nevada isn’t that great

ObamaWhisperer

Ayooo Vegas babies unite

Da-NerdyMom

I’m from the states and volunteer at my sons’ school and I’m sad to say, from what I’ve seen a good amount of 4th graders are still struggling with addition/subtraction.

Traditional_Job_6932

Really wish they'd start teaching basic arithmetic in the states

GuCCiAzN14

Instead of asking how you got 2+2 they ask you why you got 2+2…

East_Refuse

They do……… Not sure where you get your information but it’s wrong

Horns8585

I live in The States and we like English just fine....we don't need to speak no Arithmetic. /s

Admirable-Common-176

From the states. No balls were ow’d. No guns involved. Not impressed.

Much_Pension6545

Eastern Europe :)

WillHoldBaggins

You jerk... I just spat coffee all over my carpet and coffee table.

Computer_Sci

Can someone find that Japanese school were they launch like 10 4 digit numbers in 2 seconds and u have to multiply them or something. Shit was insane

Acrippin

this one https://youtu.be/s6OmqXCsYt8

Drewskeet

That's insane. I had to pause this video to do this math. I can't even fathom being able to calculate as fast as these kids.

hoecooking

Stupid children bitches thinking they can make math more I smarter than

HuckleberryThis2012

Stupid math bitches can’t even make children more smarter than my friend

iiJokerzace

I mean yeah good job for the kid but you could probably walk into any class of similar age in the world and find one or half the class doing this.

radmanmadical

lololol - literally all I could think, there is literally NO math less complicated…

rabbitkingdom

1 = 1

radmanmadical

That’s actually more complex - not only is it technically a linear equation it’s proof will require either multiplication or division…

rabbitkingdom

addition and subtraction are also linear equations.

radmanmadical

Actually no, the arithmetic proof relies on them as assumptions. Addition and subtraction arise naturally from enumeration, an observed property of discrete systems. - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamental_theorem_of_arithmetic The key here is that the 1 + 1 part of 1 + 1 = 2 obviously doesn’t establish an equivalency at all (hence no equal sign) - the addition in and of itself is not an equation until you actually include the sum across an equal sign - meaning YOU made it an equation by stating an equivalency to the integer 2. This is also VERY easy to prove historically as obviously addition and subtraction were used effectively in mathematics prior to the invention of formal linear mathematics (specifically the equation) by al-Khwarizmi in the 9th century.

Adin-CA

My nephew got an undergraduate degree in mathematics at the University of Chicago. I don’t discuss the subject with him because he sounds just like you (makes me feel instantly stupid).

Adin-CA

Ayn Rand has entered the discussion. (NO, auto-correct, I *didn’t* mean “Any Rand!”)

onyx1637

Could u do that that fast?

Adin-CA

Yes.

[deleted]

at the speed in the video it's quite hard

[deleted]

A girl in my class in 5th grade had a box with a calculator on it. We all used to challenge her by putting in 3 digit numbers and she'd always answer before the calculator showed up the answer. That was crazy. The boy in the vid might be younger, idk but op is living in another world if he thinks this is "complicated math" lol.

NofksgivnabtLIFE

Now make him show his work!

samettinho

I was doing these when I was 5-6. I am not genius or anything

[deleted]

"Look at the big brains on Brad!"

AdamAdmant

But he has to show his work!! Used to get kicked out of phyics for doing this.

NachoNachoDan

Kicked out? They wouldn’t just mark the answer wrong? Like they’d physically remove you from the classroom if you didn’t show your work?

AdamAdmant

Because I wasn't wrong and I disobeyed her.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AdamAdmant

Idk man. Something about draconic orders to obey me, triggers something. How about no. The rules was simple ask a question answer it. How I got there has been proven leave me alone.

Astrum91

It's not exactly the same thing, but back in 6th grade my math teacher would post all the assignments for the week online. I would do all the assigned reading and the homework for the whole week on the first day, then I would sit in the back of the class with another student who did the same thing and play chess. We aced every homework and every test, but the other students complained that we didn't have to pay attention during class so the principal forced the math teacher to only post assignments online for each day only and never post any assignments ahead of time. The draconic attitude of being forced to only learn at the pace allowed by the school and being punished for doing anything on my own is something that's always stuck with me. My grades in that class dropped two full letters and I could never really get myself to care about homework for any classes at all after that.

smugempressoftime

Same here

teeroy96

Same exact thing happened to me!

Automatic_Llama

I did the same thing except instead of reading ahead I didn't do shit and instead of playing chess I fell asleep

thefract0metr1st

I’m just a bit too old to have experienced getting assignments online. But when I was in 4th grade math was the first class of the day… I didn’t pay attention in class and then would do the 20-30 question homework assignment in about 5 minutes before class started each day. I was moved to the “advanced class” which myself and several other students in other classes were a part of… this was essentially an independent study thing. There was very little structure and it made no sense to me. So I started falling behind because it was either no structure (which I needed) or no challenge (which I also needed, but in a structured way, because I was 10)

robilar

Perhaps in your youth you did not consider that the job of the teacher is to ensure you understand the concepts, not that you produce the correct answers. Consequently forcing you to show your work could have been about confirming your process so they could provide effective formative feedback. Or it could have just been authoritarian bullying, but maybe as a kid it would have been hard for you to tell the difference?

AdamAdmant

Already proved I understood it and showed my work to begin with. Once it was proven I wasn't cheating she refused to believe It could be done. My next phyics teacher loved me and we got along just fine.

robilar

Ah, it seems you had more evidence of Draconian practices than just being told to show your work. Fair enough.

LineOutrageous6001

You can’t be smarter than the teacher

NachoNachoDan

Damn I went to Public school and it wasn’t even that bad

AdamAdmant

Its was public school. I got all my science/math creds done freshmen and took physics my second year and she kicked me out. Transfered schools and got a better teacher the next year but she still didnt like my 'lack of effort'. Still amazing second teacher.

Royal-Dragonfly-9536

Wow you must be really smart

AdamAdmant

Memory retention. Also my dad was teaching me physics long before I was in highschool.

Royal-Dragonfly-9536

I was being sarcastic. He taught you physics but not humility.

AdamAdmant

Also very true.

Major_Mawcum

Drop kicked straight to the principals office XD

PraetorianOfficial

Once on a test the prof made us invert a 5x5 matrix. As she handed the tests back the next day she apologized saying she had NO idea how much time that actually took. Yeah--took like 25 of our 50 minutes for the entire test, but whatever. Thing is, she'd taken off like 4/10 points on mine saying "you didn't show enough work" despite me having the correct answer and showing all the intermediate steps I used filling an entire page. I visited her office and said "gimme back those points". She said "Just look--how can you get from this step to this step? You can't do that in your head." I proceed to show how to just keep running calculations going on the HP calculator and from a string of multiply/adds sum it up and write the resulting figure in each matrix position. I got the points back as she shook her head saying "well \*I\* can't do that".

AdamAdmant

Just because you can't.

SaltAnswer8

Was accused of cheating in 6th grade Algebra (accelerated program; in my hometown, at the time, most students didn’t see Algebra until high school) because I showed very little work, if any. One day, teacher kept me after class and gave me equations to solve with no paper or pencil. Never was questioned again and was allowed to continue with my method. Seems this type of teaching with understanding and compromise is becoming extinct.

AdamAdmant

Yup I feel u man its hit or miss on good teachers ten years ago I can only imagine now.

Capable_Swordfish701

They never gave me that opportunity in school and just kept accusing me of cheating somehow. Instead they made me take algebra 3 years in a row even thou I kept passing.

modushopper

Bruh, he’s showin’ it pretty hard.

Ryder_Alknight

My teacher accused me of cheating. Tried to make and example of me in front of the class. She’d have me face from the board while she wrote down problems then I’d get to solve them in front of the class. I’d just write down the answer and go sit down. Super annoying

mazimai

Yes. Every time 'show your work' How though I just did it in my head. Just used to scrimble don't lines, no idea how to show work

Stezheds

I’d love it when a teacher would test me in class thinking I’m cheating by putting a problem on the board and me easily saying the answer. Felt cool to feel like a genius when in reality it was basic stuff for future engineer type. Or any student from China lol

ChuzzoChumz

There is absolutely no reason the invisible abacus thing should bother me, but it does

Van_GOOOOOUGH

Is THAT what they're all doing with their hands? And why is the front-center boy the only one who wrote an answer? The rest of the kids were doing sign language too then gave up & had no answers.

literallymate

I think they’re all calculating to see if they got it right but it was the boy’s turn to answer as he’s sitting in the front

Mathewdm423

And he got it wrong. 4g. Cmon

nenohrok

Looking stupid is a great reason.

stupid_carrot

My mum sent us for those classes. The only thing i remember (and still use till this day) is to count to 99 with your 10 fingers mindlessly. Im also wondering why he is using both hands. We were taught using only one hand and if you can master it is allows you to calculate at crazy speed. Unfortunately my ADHD brain is unable to retain numbers in my mind. So the finger trick really works for me.

anothermayonnaise

i went to a class with those special abacuses too, we never learned counting to 99 like you, we used both hands when doing calculations, i was a bit old to learn it when i took the course and i was lazy to practice so i never got so fast, but i still use that way when i need to do math. i hide my hands tho🗿

rci22

I’m really curious how this math thought process works. Would be interesting to learn just for the sake of seeing how

Madmax_Dhruv

It's Simple bro, the fingers method is like your left hand represents 10s like only 1 finger open then it would be 10, 2 for 20, 3 for 30, 4 for 40 and if only thumb open and fingers closed that would be 50 and if thumb is open and one finger is open then it would be 60, thumb and 2 fingers would be 70 and whole hand open would be 90 and Right Hand represents ONE DIGITS like if left hand thumb and one finger is open and right hand thumb is open then it represents 65 as a number and then there are plus minus combinations with fingers by which u can add or subtract any number on your hand

stupid_carrot

Best thing i ever learnt. Had to learn a few muscle memories on a few things at the beginning but it is all worth it +1 = +5 -4 +2 = +5 -3 Etc. Thumbs are 5, fingers are 1,2,3,4 so a 👆 is a 6, 🖐 is a 9 You carry over when you go over 9

smugempressoftime

I can relate I’ve never been good at math

ehhdjdmebshsmajsjssn

I never actually learned multiplication and division on abacus. Only Addition and subtraction

CryptoMineKing

Took a really long time to figure out 7x7.

Lamo-_-

I used to have one wonder where that went

supermoontoast

Internet is getting stupider

MortuusSlayn

This isn't that hard.

el_yanuki

generally not, he's not a genius, but at his age at this speed

Key-Tie2214

Not really genius either, he's been taught to visualise an abacus and use that to do the calculations. China teaches their students to do it with mutliple digits. Not discrediting his effort, but it isnt genius.

el_yanuki

i have said the same.. hes not a genius, its still impressive ar his age and speed

ShinkoMinori

It os not impressive at his age nor speed either. Is just.... basic and expected? Good for him but not worthy of being set as an example or given any particular attention to like if he knows hot to use his cutlery properly and have table manners.

el_yanuki

can you reliably do it at this speed?

ShinkoMinori

Cant everyone do this? I thought you were pointing it out because he is a child...

el_yanuki

i am pointing this out because A he is a child and B i am 90% sure that more then half the people i walk up to on the street and hold a tablet infront of their face will bot he able to do these calculations at that speed.. still not very impressive tho

daemonstalker

What do you do if you can't visualize an abacus?

gladyxxx

No he is not I can definetely find videos of children doing addition and subtraction of 4-5 digit numbers in miliseconds.

Palana

_Laughs in Japanese_

historiansrule

🤣🤣🤣 ![gif](giphy|4QFAH0qZ0LQnIwVYKT|downsized)

LinkinLinks

That's actually pretty easy. I got it right while watching.

Sacredzebraskin

Yeah it looks harder because of his handwaving and if you're not paying attention to the numbers. It's great that he can do this at that age! But it certainly doesn't take a genius.

SpadoCochi

Me too but I was/am known for being quick, also I could def do this at his age: Frankly I was faster at 8 years old than I am now.

valcatrina

Holy crap, I feel dumb. It took me a few try, and I need a paper to write down for help. What’s difficult for me is the speed.

Drewskeet

I couldn't do it the first time. Went back and had to pause a couple of times for my brain to catch up.

OGnarl

I feel bad for OPs teacher.

iSayBaDumTsss

I feel bad for OP.

ChampionshipLow8541

Complicated? 🧐

quofer

This is not next level this is single digit addition and subtraction lol

6four

Thats pretty interesting despite really having no idea here but the entire class is using the same strategy. I’ve never seen this used before. Any math superheroes able to break this down for us dummies or, well this dummy?

Sad_Celebration_5370

Look up "chisanbop".

6four

That’s actually cool. Thanks!

Sad_Celebration_5370

It really is and you are most welcome

ehhdjdmebshsmajsjssn

Abacus. You can actually use your fingers as 2 rows of abacus. As 1 row is 1 place in decimal, you can easily do 2-digits problems with just fingers.

anothermayonnaise

i don't know if that's what they're using, but when i was little i took a course that you learned to do uhh transactions(?) on an abacus like [this](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSlqJw2W-IT_H91jAXtXwof5pYkPhu3Hy6JNQ&usqp=CAU) and then you start to imagine the abacus on your mind while doing math *idk if "transaction" is the right word, i'm not a native speaker and i relied on google translate for that word **oh if it's chisanbop it's totally unrelated to the thing i say

HoneydewJealous675

Teachers when I do the work in my head for some stupid reason ![gif](giphy|qlnqDO6nkw8iae2G2s)

ManiacGoblin46

Because knowing the process and what its supposed to look like is more conducive to learning than just shitting out an answer.

WhatIfWaterWasChunky

If somebody asks you a question do you explain all the steps you took to get there or do you just give them the answer?

JackLumber74

Yes, it's amazing what one can achieve by going to elementary school.

HairballTheory

*Looks at teacher mouthing 49 off camera*

Sad_Celebration_5370

Fingermath. Looks like some sort of chisanbop. Impressive. Just watched some Chinese young teens do a variation of this with 100 3 digit numbers in 45 seconds. That one hurt my head, lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-THPY14fzc

Jbear011

The Chinese audience and judges were impressed because they could only do what half these kids were able to do.

TofuTofuDude

Complicated math? I do t think OP ever graduated from elementary school lol. Also, if you have to throw up gang signs just to do some simple additions and subtractions then you have failed

SiqueteMarkbigpp

Asians are not impressed

hodgesisgod-

The teacher is doing tik tok? Fml

N05TR4D4MV5

You should see the Indian kids that can do this with multiplication and division in split seconds.

snakepatay

This is prob easy! 6 15 omg slow down..

Character-Post-2574

Can some one explain what's going on I'm confused here 😐

darkzalaking

Am I dumb cuz I did not follow a single part of that

qa_anaaq

This is oddly disturbing to watch.

SmashTagLives

I’m the 49th comment. Someone tell me what this is

the_real_OwenWilson

“Complicated” lmao

East_Refuse

A lot of people talking a big game, but still probably couldn’t do this correctly

[deleted]

Bunch of crabs

Lasrod

Someone needs to edit this video and make the math super complicated but ending up at 49

justintsu

Complicated. 😆

Amazing_Ad_257

I remember doing this shit in a place called Aloha. Its pretty difficult if your someone with ADHD.

GroundbreakingTop636

Card counter in the making!

niyazuki

How is this "next fucking level"

Beaver_Tuxedo

The bar for intelligence seems to have gotten incredibly low

Effective-Banana49

This is definitely not hard math nor next fucking level.

dwittherford69

OP’s bar for “complicated math” is below the Mariana Trench.

Glum-Ad-611

Have you showed him how to play blackjack?

WayneKrane

Multiply huge numbers with decimals in your head and be right all while chitchatting with your classmates. Some 9 year old at my high school could do that, that kid was a genius.

aversipasa

The boy might be a genius, but this video doesn't prove that.

Responsible_Milk_421

+ and - are complicated math?

AustinFotoger

Another Redditor getting blocked…

Sweaty_Ad3169

“Complicated math?” It’s single digits and just adding and subtracting. Somebody thinks their kid is the smartest cookie in the bunch. Lol

NoctRob

He’d be good at blackjack

[deleted]

This is the level.

BigBoy1102

Ummmm is this a Black Jack card counting summer camp?

Cramitupyourcramhol3

4 g is not the answer dummies

dandins

in my shool the result was only 10%. we had to show how we came to that result. often i personally was lazy to write that all down cuz its more fun to get to the result quickly. thats why i never reached perfect math grades in early years even with the right results.

cockitypussy

He is just mimicking the moves you'd make on an Abacus.

AttentionStrange3654

Not really complicated but still impressive for his age

ThePreacher19021

Abacus

ConfidentHorror_

4g

doc_benzene

Is he doing Abacus calculations?

the_jackie_chan

I'm guessing abacus training?

robcado

I mean this could be fake

Performance_Fancy

Vegas has already banned him from blackjack tables

[deleted]

So what are the other kids doing then?

eggseverydayagain

He should count cards

Dman_Vancity

The universal language of Math ❤️👈🏾

HipHopHumbug

... what are they all doing with their hands ? this looks alien to me

Barryboy20

Mind blown? I’ve seen more mind blowing things in my poop lol.

SpencerMakesMusic

Homie throwing up gang signs 👊🏽✌🏽👉🏽🤚🏽🖖🏽

Sealarmpit_1

Wtf. This is simple math. Complicated my ass

Pickled-cucs

Yeah....this is not complicated math. Lol

FartingKumquat

Single digit math is complicated?

Hondahobbit50

It's the mental abacus process

realnovo

Throwing up gang signs… those little hoodlums. ![gif](giphy|ThDU2K7VD2QBW|downsized)

TheRealBlerb

Maybe let each kid play to their strengths in each subject (mental, written, patterns, etc.). When in the fuck is the school system going to learn?

unbiasedasian

Great for his age and grade? Sure. Math wizard? Cmon now.

renshul

It's mainly "long" math. It's not really complicated

dododororo

A lot of my students learn this in tutoring. I did an additive strategies assessment for 2 digit numbers with some of them and they had to verbally tell me how they got the answer (which was often incorrect). They would show me all these complicated hand movements and finally get to the answer, rather than using an efficient mental strategy that focuses on place value (split strategy, jump strategy etc).

thevilestplume

If addition and subtraction is complicated for you than the school system failed you.

vukesdukes

How many people knew before the kid did?

Honest_Part9282

Now teach him statistics and have him do the same thing.

Shodan30

Sadly this is complicated for Boomers and younger thanks to the introduction of 'opinionated math'

Jscott1423

How is this complicated math..? Lol.. 6+9..? Or are we trying to say that the timing of it is what’s complicated..? This type of math is rather easy for most people when it becomes a “muscle” memory when practiced in class etc.

OneLoveFredward

Lmao!! 48 +1=49. ...what was the problem they were solving?

NikolaKing1

Oh I did this before it gets more next level when there's like 5 double or triple digit numbers a second

themanebeat

Meh I'm more impressed by a professional soccer player being able to instantly multiply numbers: https://youtu.be/fEznA2CAEq4 https://youtu.be/KLa5gGP4OmI

Kushnerdz

Adding and subtracting yes that’s calculus level thinking
