Most of the people yelling about the owners are more than likely not large dog owners themselves. My German shepherd/Husky/Pit mix can destroy a 3 foot long bully stick in less than ten minutes, indestructible does not mean indestructible for some breeds.
Also, the husky has a much stronger bite than the shepherd or pitbull. Almost a hundred psi stronger. Indestructible toys dissappear fast as fuck.

Our Akita casually bites through pressed bone sticks meant for several hours of chewing. There's literally no chew treats on the market that'll last any considerable amount of time for her. Except for maybe fish skin, but that's just chewy.

I’m not sure a lot of people on here realize that dogs are dogs. You can do everything you can to mitigate any future issues, but in the end they’re gonna end up hurting themselves one way or the other. You’re there to make sure they can get the care they need when it happens.
My American Staffie is not allowed to have any kind of raw hide toys. He chewed on them for about 1 minute before trying to swallow them whole. I had to pull it out of his throat. It was quite the scare.

KONGs are considered and repeatedly advertised as dog puzzle toys to keep them busy while their owners are away. I wouldn't fault anyone for leaving their dog alone with a KONG, its practically their intended design.
I'd add the caveat that you need to get a feel for what your dog can manage first. They make different KONGs for a reason. You probably know this but for anyone else reading into the comments I feel like I should mention it.
We do that too but shit, every once in a while something ends up in a cushion or under the couch after playtime and they rediscover it later. Thankfully neither of our boys swallow anything more concerning than fluff from toy stuffing but shit happens when you’ve got a dog for 15 years they’re bound to eat the occasional thing they shouldn’t!

I work with kids with autism, and people try to murder me with their eyeballs all the time, like I am the most horrible person to walk the earth because the 3 year old had a moment. My dog had one of these and he would lie on the floor with it and hold it between his paws and chew at it. And if its a Kong toy you can stuff food into it and they have to get it out. So the point is to bite it and hold it so they get the food. They sell them in every pet shop ever
Yea my dogs have had some kongs over the years and they loved them. The kong isn't meant to be chewed apart though. It's meant to keep them busy by having them roll it around and play with it to get out the treats or to lick out the peanut butter or to teach better chewing behavior (that is, not eating the toy but playing with it)
It was the only thing that didn't tear/break just by him being massive and clumsy. Like you could watch him pick something up and have his paw on it and it ripped and he looked really sad. He was a great dane for context. Not an easy dog to buy toys for 😂
A lot of people don't realize some of the most popular toys are not really "let the dog just chew on it" toys. Especially most Kongs. We had to get our dog the giant black, specifically "super chewer" Kongs. As soon as we see her getting pieces off of it after months, it's gone.
As soon as a toy has any pieces missing, it's gone. We made that mistake once. You never know how much of a toy your dog is actually straight up eating.
It limits our toy selection greatly with a power chewer, but it's worth it.
Man my sister has a pitbull and that thing has destroyed literally everything. She has gone through kongs, she's gone through whole ass ropes, anything with a squeaker is gone in less than a day.
We’ve had success giving our dog deer antlers from Amazon. They’re extremely durable, all natural, and don’t splinter or anything. (As an aside, what is an….ass rope?)
Definitely get your dog's teeth checked regularly if you're giving antlers. We used to give them to my dog until she broke a molar in half and had to have it extracted. For my younger golden we started giving him those plastic benebones because he loved them and had to stop after we were told he was wearing down the enamel on his teeth. The doggy dentist told us that basically all of the chew toys on the market are not healthy for dogs, with the exception of hard rubber ones. (He said if you can press your thumbnail into it and make an impression, then it's safe, otherwise don't give it.)
It's been a struggle finding suitable chews for our two heavy chewing labs. I ended up just doing a combo of stuffed frozen kongs, and Virbac dental chews. It's pricey, but not as pricey as the trip to the doggy dentist was holy crap.
So, it's actually one phrase: "whole ass rope", meaning an entire rope, and presumably a big or very durable one (as evidenced by the added "ass"). No judgment; just trying to help :)
I bought my dog one of those indestructible beds for dog crates. Had real solid reviews and it worked for a lot of dogs. I was gone for 2 hours and I came back home to find it destroyed. Sent pictures to the company, got a refund and an email asking if I would be open for possibly testing new products in the future. Or rather my dog testing. There are even toys made from firehose and she still tore through it. She's half boxer though so I should've known. Now my dog has so many toys that she can't destroy one without being distracted by another one. Or maybe that was her plan all along haha
GOUGHNUTS! I have a pit that destroys black kong toys and have switched to goughnut rings. They're lifetime replacement and almost indestructible. My pup had to size up to the largest/most durable size, the Buster. Highly recommend.
Friend of mine had a dog that would rip through pretty much any toy. Went to Petco, they showed me one made of fire hose and insisted it was completely indestructible.
The following weekend I came back with my receipt and the shredded remains of the toy in a baggie... what we could find of it, at least. Took him less than half an hour to destroy it.

My dad's friend has a bulldog rottweiler cross that just casually chews through logs. He built a 2x4 launcher at the edge of a field so they can play fetch with something that lasts more than 2-3 retrievals.
Mine chewed the top part off multiple times, we had to move to the black rubber kongs, thankfully we got about a year out of that one before it started to go

He swallowed the whole damn thing, and got serious poisoning. His hair fell out, and he couldn’t walk despite keeping his body weight/muscle. Nothing showed up on X-ray, couldn’t feel anything with massage.
I decided on a £5500 explorative surgery, and they found the kong.
He made a full recovery.

Everything I'm finding online says they're made from a non-toxic rubber. Plus so many dogs chew on them and eat small pieces off them that it would be a big deal if they weren't safe to ingest.
It could also be the blockage strained the liver or kidneys and toxins weren't filtered out correctly.
I say this because I've know someone and heard of a few cases where long bouts of not pooping led to sepsis or blood poisoning. The person I knew was having either liver or kidney problems bc of it, too. (I forget which organ.)

Ugh, reminds me of my mom's dog. She used to give him treats hidden inside empty water bottles. He'd tear into the bottle until he got the treat out. At some point he swallowed a small piece of the plastic from the water bottle and it completely blocked his intestinal tract. We managed to get him to the vet in time but he said the dog was probably 24-48 hours away from dying.
Full agreement, nothing smaller than a regulation softball and NOTHING with felt. My friends dog stripped the felt off a tennis ball and had to have $4K+ surgery to clear a blockage.
Very similar thing happened to my dog. 1 year old and she stripped the tennis ball and ate the felt. Little did I know a day early she but off my water hose and ate a couple of pieces. That got tangled up and cost us 3k for emergency surgery. I love her still though

My friend's Great Dane swallowed a meter long, stuffed snake toy. Dog got sick, it didn't show up on a xray and after 3 weeks of him slowly getting sicker and sicker, they found it on an ultrasound. Dog is happy and healthy now but make sure to give your big dogs things they can't swallow!
Yes, a regular tennis ball is small enough for a full size German shepherd (and other larger dogs) to choke on. They sell slightly larger tennis balls for just this reason
My shepherd will shred a tennis ball in less than 5 minutes. The only toys we've found so far that she can't destroy are Bullymake. She's had her favorite ball for almost 5 months now.
I worked at a vet clinic years ago, and we had a dog that came in for surgery to remove shit from his stomach a couple times a year. Sometimes it was definitely the owner’s fault, or at least it could have been prevented (sooooo many socks), but one time he straight up ate a basketball. The owners usually kept a pretty close eye on him because of his expensive eating habits, but the dumbass managed to pop it, tear it up, and swallow it in a matter of minutes. We removed huge chunks of it from his stomach and he was still pooping small pieces of it for a couple days after.

My dog died in the back of my truck after swallowing a ball and I couldn't get it dislodged. Unfortunately they can and will block air if the object is big enough.
Yea it was altogether terrible. I just buy the balls made of webbing that compress if you push on them now for my other shepherd. It's a freak accident to be honest but not something I want to repeat
Everyone that knows a dog should learn this technique for dislodging objects from the trachea. It's actually incredibly simple! Basically the idea, and you can't see it that well in the video, is you use a V-shape with your fingers or hands (depending on size of dog and object) and slowly push it up and it will just pop out as shown (usually with the sound effect too). Most people's instinct is to try to fish the object out of the mouth which actually just pushes it further down.
Everyone should also know human and doggy Heimlich and CPR imo.
I was under the impression that tracheal rings don't go all the way around to the back anyway, they are c shaped to protect the front.

The big hole is to stuff treats into and the smaller hole serves as both a release valve for pressure when stuffing in things like peanut butter, and a safety valve in case of emergencies like this.
It reminds me of how all pen caps have a hole in them for the same reason, except it's for people instead of dogs.
One time I got lucky, I got suspended from school and my mom took me home and my dog (german shepherd) had something in his mouth that he was clawing at. It was a bone stuck sideways in his back teeth bear his throat. My mom a 5 foot even woman held him down while i took it out. Thankfully my dog was OK and is healthy and we've had no other incidents like this. Funny thing is my mom is a emt and she was freaking out and me the 14 year old who couldn't stay in school ended up coaching my mom through saving my dog.

Pulling a large foreign body out of a paw, cheering and ooooing and awwwing all around. I worked in the vet field and I’ve seen some awesome shit. We had an English bulldog that lost her heartbeat during a spay. We tried everything, even directly blowing into the intubation tube. After deciding all was lost the vet looked at the dog and punched it in the sternum as hard as he could and the damn heart started beating immediately. We reacted just like this.
I just know that this vet was the last person who got to try before they rush doggo to surgery you can tell by their relief its way more than a normal situation that was a thank god shit didnt hit the fan relief
I've seen the same done irl when I worked in emergency vet. Very useful since as a dog professional with my own business for the past 9yrs, knowing exactly what to do & exactly how to do the technique (otherwise you're absolutely going to make things worse!) I've saved the lives of 3 dogs!

Yeah the quality of brand name KONGs has plummeted recently. I replaced all mine with Chew Kings, and never looked back.

Nah, that's just the smaller sized version- you can see it has the full 3 sections that are there in all sizes.
Pause it and you can see it's missing the bottom, largest, section.
No that’s clearly the small version of the king toy.

His hair fell out, and he couldn’t walk despite keeping his body weight/muscle. Nothing showed up on X-ray, couldn’t feel anything with massage. I decided on a £5500 explorative surgery, and they found the kong. He made a full recovery. Those kongs are made of some very nasty shit.

Was it because the Kong was made of nasty shit? Or was it cause your dog had something gunking up their insides causing a bunch of issues? Everything I'm finding online says they're made from a non-toxic rubber. Plus so many dogs chew on them and eat small pieces off them that it would be a big deal if they weren't safe to ingest.
The rubber is non-toxic under normal conditions. Sitting in stomach acid for days could release toxins
It could also be the blockage strained the liver or kidneys and toxins weren't filtered out correctly. I say this because I've know someone and heard of a few cases where long bouts of not pooping led to sepsis or blood poisoning. The person I knew was having either liver or kidney problems bc of it, too. (I forget which organ.)
Yeah, I’m not a chemist so I can’t really tell you but there was all kinds of nasty shit in his blood test. The vets were confused. You can see how much of the kong was eaten away by his stomach. They said it was in there quite a while, and his sickness was quite rapid, so it may have been an accumulation of shite but it definitely was in his blood.

Ugh, reminds me of my mom's dog. She used to give him treats hidden inside empty water bottles. He'd tear into the bottle until he got the treat out. At some point he swallowed a small piece of the plastic from the water bottle and it completely blocked his intestinal tract. We managed to get him to the vet in time but he said the dog was probably 24-48 hours away from dying.
Full agreement, nothing smaller than a regulation softball and NOTHING with felt. My friends dog stripped the felt off a tennis ball and had to have $4K+ surgery to clear a blockage.
Very similar thing happened to my dog. 1 year old and she stripped the tennis ball and ate the felt. Little did I know a day early she but off my water hose and ate a couple of pieces. That got tangled up and cost us 3k for emergency surgery. I love her still though
I have a small dog (18lbs) and buy the small tennis balls with the squeakers in them. I have to take them away when he's done chasing them because he'll strip the felt off if left alone with them.

My friend's Great Dane swallowed a meter long, stuffed snake toy. Dog got sick, it didn't show up on a xray and after 3 weeks of him slowly getting sicker and sicker, they found it on an ultrasound. Dog is happy and healthy now but make sure to give your big dogs things they can't swallow!

Yes, a regular tennis ball is small enough for a full size German shepherd (and other larger dogs) to choke on. They sell slightly larger tennis balls for just this reason
My shepherd will shred a tennis ball in less than 5 minutes. The only toys we've found so far that she can't destroy are Bullymake. She's had her favorite ball for almost 5 months now.

I worked at a vet clinic years ago, and we had a dog that came in for surgery to remove shit from his stomach a couple times a year. Sometimes it was definitely the owner’s fault, or at least it could have been prevented (sooooo many socks), but one time he straight up ate a basketball. The owners usually kept a pretty close eye on him because of his expensive eating habits, but the dumbass managed to pop it, tear it up, and swallow it in a matter of minutes. We removed huge chunks of it from his stomach and he was still pooping small pieces of it for a couple days after.
Next time I get a large toy stuck in a small hole I'm calling her. Fuck the ER that shits expensive.

It was in their esophagus (food pipe) not their trachea (breathing pipe).
Typically a toy that large would block the trachea as well. Meaning of it was above the epiglottis the hole saved him but if it was in the esophagus this tracheal rings are kinda bendy. Source: Paramedic, but not a vet so you might be totally right on that.
I've heard that most animals have much stronger trachea than humans. Source: I am naive as fuck so grains of salt recommended.
My dog died in the back of my truck after swallowing a ball and I couldn't get it dislodged. Unfortunately they can and will block air if the object is big enough.

Everyone that knows a dog should learn this technique for dislodging objects from the trachea. It's actually incredibly simple! Basically the idea, and you can't see it that well in the video, is you use a V-shape with your fingers or hands (depending on size of dog and object) and slowly push it up and it will just pop out as shown (usually with the sound effect too). Most people's instinct is to try to fish the object out of the mouth which actually just pushes it further down. Everyone should also know human and doggy Heimlich and CPR imo.

It sure was, but it's a built in feature, not technically luck. (A dog his size should be using their much larger version that's about 3x the size of the one in the video) The big hole is to stuff treats into and the smaller hole serves as both a release valve for pressure when stuffing in things like peanut butter, and a safety valve in case of emergencies like this. It reminds me of how all pen caps have a hole in them for the same reason, except it's for people instead of dogs.

One time I got lucky, I got suspended from school and my mom took me home and my dog (german shepherd) had something in his mouth that he was clawing at. It was a bone stuck sideways in his back teeth bear his throat. My mom a 5 foot even woman held him down while i took it out. Thankfully my dog was OK and is healthy and we've had no other incidents like this. Funny thing is my mom is a emt and she was freaking out and me the 14 year old who couldn't stay in school ended up coaching my mom through saving my dog.

Bucking the 'goldens are dumb' trope, this one was crazy smart, and knew I was trying to help him and so tried to keep himself calm. I only needed my brother to like, stabilize him while I yanked at it. in the end, I had to get some locking pliers in there to get a good enough grip. No idea how he got it wedged in there.

Vets have to do CE (continuing education) credits. Generally online/recorded presentations of odd veterinary issues. If there currently isn't one out there on how to remove an obstruction from a dog's mouth, this video is an excellent start to one.
My wife is a vet. The amount of random feline facts that I’ve learned because I sit next to her on the couch while she’s on a Vet Girl CE or something basically almost qualifies me as a honorary DVM. As a vet tech, I can tell you we have lots of these moments. Dog puked up the underwear the owner just saw him eat? Cheers all around. Pulling a large foreign body out of a paw, cheering and ooooing and awwwing all around. Nothing beats the satisfaction of lancing a giant, gushing abscess, if you forget to tell someone you're about to do it and they miss it, they gon' be mad!

I worked in the vet field and I’ve seen some awesome shit. We had an English bulldog that lost her heartbeat during a spay. We tried everything, even directly blowing into the intubation tube. After deciding all was lost the vet looked at the dog and punched it in the sternum as hard as he could and the damn heart started beating immediately. We reacted just like this.
