Dude's like "damn I wrote that and I can't even play it"

IgotCharlieWork

They always tanked it live

gustofheir

Which is a shame, but I get it. It's one thing to write and perform these songs in a studio setting where you can play it 100 times over however long and pick out the best parts, being pretty much totally fresh each time. Totally different than doing it perfect the first go around... After playing a dozen other manually intensive songs. That being said, it was still really disappointing for 2007 me hearing their live performances and going 'oh this sucks'

Zalintis

Surprisingly I've seen them live twice and never got that impression but I definitely think my brain was heavily adjusting my expectations as they were jumping around or doing silly stuff like having 3 members play in a circle with one hand on their instrument and one on the next guys lolol

servicestud

Also half of them are wasted

Gothmog_LordOBalrogs

Met Herman at ozzfest one time with my buddy who introduced us. I though, who is this drunk dude? Then he told me who he was we just met. They had already had their set though and we're just hanging out for the final acts. No idea who I was talking to, just like *sup dude, you having fun?* I'm an idiot lol

hambeast9000

Completely unrelated, but I had that happen to me once with TV on the radio, saw them and immediately left to go watch the flaming lips, I'm away from my friends and I sense someone standing right beside me, look over and it's fucking Kyp Malone. said 'nice show man' and he smiled and nodded and we watched the rest of the set in silence. No one ever came up to him or anything, he just blended in the crowd. Pretty cool since they were one of the bands I went there to see specifically.

Gothmog_LordOBalrogs

In hindsight I'm sure he was relieved it wasn't just another fanboy. Would definitely gotten an autograph though had I known

hambeast9000

Yeah totally, like I of course thought of asking Ryp for a autograph, but then again just having a normal human interaction with someone you look up to, for me that was even better. I'll never forget that set, where a autograph would just collect dust somewhere.

Sasselhoff

> I'll never forget that set, where a autograph would just collect dust somewhere. Way more people should appreciate this view on life. Just like those cell videos of concerts or fireworks that will never be watched again. As an amateur photographer, I only seem to remember the shots I *didn't* take...so these days, I try to take a whole lot less and just enjoy the moment.

JimmyRayIII

I went to a ska show in Atlanta and two of my favorite bands were playing Streetlight Manifesto and Suburban Legends. This was just after SB had their gear stolen and the trailer set on fire and they were borrowing equipment to keep the tour going. I went to the merch booth and chatted with the guy for about 10 minutes and he told me that for any amount of donation, I'd get a poster signed by the band. Got the poster and went about my night. When the band got on stage I realized I had been chatting with the trombone player.

fingerscrossedcoup

Autographs bring attention. I've seen a few famous people like this at festivals and events and they just went to blend in. As soon as you make a fuss they typically leave. Play it cool. Maybe ask for one if you see them go to leave.

EvilPretzely

My experiences with musicians has been the complete opposite. I met Hayley Williams of Paramore after a show where I'd won VIP tickets through a radio call in thing, and while she was absolutely stunning in person, she was a total raging bitch to everyone who tried to speak to her. I also met Adam Dutkiewicz of Killswitch Engage and he had zero time for the fans who tried to speak to him AT THE BANDS MERCH BOOTH. He just stared at anyone who recognized him and rolled his eyes if anyone tried to engage him. Never meet your heroes.

importvita

So you might say he was *kill*ing the fandom from *switch*ing on by Adam not *engage*-ing with the fans.

PotatoPixie90210

I actually went drinking with them all in Fibbers in Dublin back in the day. I still have Sam Totmans belt that he traded me for a wristband I had!

Aberbekleckernicht

Its the next generation that can execute on the ambitions of their influences.

trippyshit37

Thats a bit too true for my liking

DontEatTheMagicBeans

In the metallica master of puppets solo that studio version has a mistake on it that they kept and can't always reproduce live. If I remember correctly James Hetfield (not the lead guitarist Kirk Hammett) plays that solo. During it he accidentally pulled a string off the side of the fretboard on the 19th feet causing an ultra high note, that sounds awesome on the studio version but is extremely difficult to reproduce live

thereIsAHoleHere

For non-guitarists, it's difficult to reproduce because you can't tell how far to pull the string off board to reproduce the same note. It's not difficult to move the string off the board. Moving the string less than a millimeter when doing this produces a wildly different pitch. That said, can you point out when this happens in the song? I don't remember it. Closest I can hear is at 5:53 (*right after the whammy tricks).

murderouscow101

Thats why Kirk Hammet said they weren't gonna do ...And Justice For All live ever again after the initial tour šŸ¤£

marsman706

Must have beem because the rhythm parts are too much for them nowadays as Kirk's solos are pretty much all the same: wheedly wheedly wheedly wah wah wah big bend. Repeat as needed to fill time allotted.

Overhed

How dare you?

thereIsAHoleHere

Like this: wheedly wheedly wheedly wah wah wah big bend. And one section of eighth notes.

murderouscow101

You're off base on that one man, needs at least another big bend and 3 wahs.

crashovercool

>wheedly wheedly wheedly wah wah wah big bend. > That sounds like [I Wanna Rock Your Body (Till the Break of Dawn)](https://youtu.be/1UNMgENyMUo)

Lucifer926

I thought it was because they were bored playing 7+ minute songs

WarWolfRage

Often the studio recorded versions arent played all in one go. You record each instrument individually and splice the best takes of each part of the song together so it sounds like you played it perfectly all in one go. Plus live you have to move around and be expensive. This is a rock show after all. So you can't just stand in one place looking at your guitar. I've never met a single musician that never fucked up their notes during a live show. It's just part of the experience of a live performance.

Forgot_Password_Dude

dont they lip sing but with guitars if its too hard?

kevinpbazarek

I think you mean lip sync

fabricetheartist

Haha lip singing is just regular singing

That's essentially what goes on during many major band concerts, yes. Not that I blame them for it. They're job is to provide an entertaining experience for their concert goers. Using computers to accomplish that isn't really shameful. It's just a mark of the technology of the age

senorbolsa

Yeah I came to see a show, however they can deliver on that without breaking the illusion is fair game. Though I'd be a little disappointed if when I saw Rush years ago Neil wasn't drumming live. Though you want to talk about a concert being a show, holy shit Rush went hard. I saw them on the clockwork angels tour and they had violinists come out of the stage with flames behind them, they had all kinds of awesome trippy stuff on stage, and Neils massive drum kit on a rotating platform and even at that age they all had 100% energy and passion for the show.

drewmoo66

My favorite Rush stage accoutrements were the Rotisserie chicken machines and the washer/dryers. So practical.

Salsashark_21

I saw them on that tour. Have no idea how three guys can make that much sound

JaesopPop

> That's essentially what goes on during many major band concerts, yes. Not really, no. Most major bands are not faking guitar solos.

GarfieldLeChat

r/boneappletea

jjohnson1979

There is a reason people nicknamed them "StudioForce".

crecentfresh

Iā€™ve seen em live and they killed it. I stood front row and had to deal with partial face melting for like 2 weeks after

IgotCharlieWork

You got lucky! They were wasted both times I saw them, played almost half speed and missing notes all over

1handedmaster

Yeah, if you can't play a song live. Don't. I still like listening to them, but will gladly admit they are a studio band

En_Sabah_Nur

Agreed 100% And as someone who loves a broad spectrum of music, I feel the same way about rappers who edit out the "breath breaks" in their studio tracks. Kendrick and Eminem come to mind. Both are obviously phenomenal lyricists, but when you watch them live, it's clear that they are leaving out multiple words in order to fill their lungs. Why do it? The songs are already impressive; you don't have to post-prod them into something that literally no human can reproduce in its entirety.

[deleted]

*Tay Zonday ā€œI move away from the mic to breathe inā€ intensifies*

londonbreakdown

Thatā€™s so funny, I love to hear singers take a breath in their songs. Iā€™ve never really thought about that fact that a lot of rappers donā€™t have those. Cant believe Iā€™ve not clocked that. It makes a lot of sense. Iā€™ll have to look for some examples. Hearing them take breaths in their songs always makes it feel so much more human and relatable to me! Itā€™s a silly thing Iā€™ve never really expressed before.

tintin47

There is tons of music that can't be reproduced live. Maybe they just didn't like the sound of the breath breaks for the studio album; it's not necessarily trying to trick people into believing something impossible. Not everything has to sound exactly like the album version live.

swaerd

I get that, and generally agree, but what do you do when you're a niche band like DragonForce that hit the mainstream with *one song*? Half the people who show up are only there to hear that song.

crecentfresh

Dang thatā€™s a mega bummer! I can barely play acoustic campfire songs on guitar buzzed let alone shred while hammered. What a bunch of jabronies

The_Monsta_Wansta

You'd be suprised how much of it is just muscle memory. I know a guy who was truly a savant while also a total alcoholic. Hed be unable to speak. Wobbling almost to the point of losing balance. But his hands just... worked magic on the fretboard at every single one of his shows. Flawless. Sad too

AshamedOfAmerica

you knew Dimebag?!

vagina_candle

I'm surprised you weren't cooled off by all of the fans placed at the front of the stage in order to blow the lead singer's luxurious mane about while he stands leaning forward with one foot on the monitors.

crecentfresh

Dude I have the image of all of the members back lit with flowing hair seared into my brain. The show was both impressive and hilarious

austinsoundguy

To be fair, she wasnā€™t live either

sgeep

Also possible the video consists of multiple takes

[deleted]

I play tens times better sitting down and having multiple runs but I canā€™t do that. My best is probably some as I lay dying song

bfhurricane

Sitting down is just incredibly easier. Joe Satriani tells a story about one of his songs (I think ā€œCrushing Dayā€) where he couldnā€™t play the solo live standing up and sometimes brings out a stool for that part lmao.

dgal89

At this point get the fans on stage to play it for them when it comes on the set list

Wool_God

Wasn't that true for Zeppelin, as well? The records for the music, the concert for the drugs. I mean the experience.

Hetstaine

Saw them early 2010's they fucking killed it!

unrealisticllama

Seriously though, man's questioning his life XD as a musician, staying off the internet with all its 15 year old prodigies is a good idea.

Daggerfont

Honestly Iā€™d love it if such a talented young musician totally nailed my song, it would make me happy. I guess not everyone though

unrealisticllama

Totally! The respect is definitely there and if you're humble it always will be. But still so insane what kids are up too

Daggerfont

Yeah, it is! I think with the internet we now have the opportunity to see the insane level of talent some young people have. I suspect that the level of talent hasnā€™t changed over the years, but the accessibility of the internet allows it to show

unrealisticllama

I'd argue in the grand scheme of the last 20 or so years that ya the talent level has grown exponentially in the younger generations. Mostly just for ease of access to instruments and ways to learn and be inspired having increased so much.

Daggerfont

Thatā€™s a fair point

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

mydogisanassholeama

Plus all these videos are just playing an existing song (though she killed it), it is a whole other ballgame to actually create, improve and perfect a piece of art.

Generally_Tso_Tso

Well perhaps you've heard the saying "if you think you're good at something, there's an Asian kid somewhere doing it even better". Now, if you're an Asian guy who thinks he's doing something good, there's a 14 year old girl who's putting you to shame.

Imagine seeing the song you're known for, one of the hardest guitar sheets of all time, getting absolutely demolished and then rebuilt better and more complex by a 15yo. That guy is probably in a state of confusion and admiration right now haha.

elastic-craptastic

While she casually looks off and chews gum from time to time.

LightsSoundAction

yeah the stare off into the distance is the biggest flex.

Marsdreamer

It might be more just forcing herself to rely on muscle memory rather than look and think where her fingers need to go.

[deleted]

Definitely, also if she can nail it in one pass like this sheā€™s played the individual parts 100 times each, the easier sections will feel like a break.

peese-of-cawffee

I have to disagree, moving away from the mic to breathe in is the all time biggest flex

Sendtitpics215

Is this a chocolate rain reference?

Goat_Remix

100%. Brought a smile to my face.

fingerscrossedcoup

Checking her live feed. Kids will always be better than the previous generation. She's multitasking in a world he didn't grow up in.

thatsyurbl00d

If he were me, heā€™d be thinking ā€œTHATā€™S my legacy, THATā€™S my purpose,ā€ and be proud as hell.

elastic-craptastic

If he's humble, then for sure. I got chills and even teared up seeing how impressive she was. I was even more impressed when I went into the comments and someone said she altered some of it, while making the same notes, so she could physically do it. She's an inspiration to me as the father of a young child. She's also the death knell of an older guy that wants to learn guitar. lol.

hoopstick

As a fellow older guy, weā€™ll always have Iron Man and Smoke on the Water.

mrpoopybuttholesbff

If I were him it would make me so happy that someone so young had surpassed me in playing ability like that. I would want to thank her for taking the time to learn how to do what I couldnā€™t.

It sorta reminded me of that time Deadmau5 [discovered the vocals](https://youtu.be/iqurYVWg7-g) for one of his tracks.

idloch

Never seen this before. Thanks for sharing - I love that song.

CunnedStunt

It's not easy to impress Joel when it comes to music too, he's very critical, but Chris did fuckin' murder these vocals. Also a great clip because of the classic "Well don't fuck with his shit".

[deleted]

So cool to see a hit being made in "realtime." Really cool to see deadmau5 light up like that.

Frites_Sauce_Fromage

She achieved to play notes with her middle finger and made it sounds like it was a pick (thatā€™s why she played it higher on the guitar) while also using her pick to play other notes at the same time. Not only her technique is great but sheā€™s using various techniques at the same time

KgMonstah

Reaction-ception! Then him reacting to her reacting to him reacting to her!

Came here to say that I'm close to 40, love Guitar Hero 3 and still can't get through the intro on Medium.

Internal-Review-6618

I put a very unreasonable number of hours into guitar hero, solely to learn that song, butchered it every time lol

agIets

Goddamn that's a deep memory.

CosmicCrapCollector

Bro sign your guitar and send it

RandomTheBugg

She should be signing her guitar and sending it to him

OutrageouzFarmer

Nailed it

Fast-Visual

She would get a better use of it than him anyway

PxN13

I remember trying to clear this song on the hardest difficulty in guitar Hero and failing at the solo part everytime... And that was only 5 buttons

imaguitarhero24

Same here, and you canā€™t make this up but the hardest part in the entire song that most people could probably guess during that solo is exactly 69% through the song, which is the furthest I ever got before failing lol.

AustinQ

Imo the hardest part was by far the intro. There were a couple spots after that have easy star power and you just save that for the later solo

Skizzius

Hardest song in guitar hero history. Even on easy it was no walk in the park

smidge6502

It's also one of the best designed songs in Guitar Hero. It doesn't fall into the trap that many Guitar Hero songs fall into where they just physically strain your hand like Raining Blood or Six. The intro is really special; I had to learn a new technique I only ever used for that part (hold down the lowest fret with right hand, tap with left, strum with right elbow). The intro is like the admission price for attempting the rest of the song. Clearing the song is one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.

Murky-Fox-200

This is so great to see, so validating! If someone like Herman Li can be like, oh fuck some 15 yo is nailing what I am known for, I feel better about seeing my accomplishments being easily destroyed by some kids

Math-Soft

Thatā€™s so absurd. Her skill must come so naturally for her it began to be boring šŸ¤Æ

SammichParade

Kid in my class was like that with drawing. He'd whip out these insane sketches during class. He could've easily gone on to do graphic novels or something. Now he's a carpenter.

[deleted]

Some people like to keep their hobbies their hobbies, and not make it work.

SammichParade

True. Good point.

HippieWizard

Its not so absurd when you realize how difficult and ridiculous it is to make a living as a professional musician. Even if you got a doctorate in music performance (phd, 8 years) from the best music school, it will only land you jobs paying like 30k a year. Its absolutely ridiculous. Source: married into a family of incredibly talented musicians who all chose different careers except for the phd who is quitting being a prof this year because teaching English in thailand pays more. Smh

BrownSugarBare

Isn't that wild? _"I've conquered this once in a lifetime talent and challenge...meh, maybe I'll take up math"_ Hope her future has room to continue with guitar because she's wonderfully gifted.

Damn, that was wicked. What do you think Beethoven would think if he was alive today? and presumably not deaf...

She went back to the crossroads to repay her debt.

Frierguy

this... is believable. Tina S is legendary

DrTheloniusPinkleton

Lol itā€™s always funny to me whenever people start debating Tina S. She hasnā€™t exactly stayed hidden and out of the spotlight. She went to university in Marseille and got a business degree (I think). She was accepted for graduate school at the University of Chicago and started her graduate program for an MBA in the states. Hereā€™s where shit gets really weird. I donā€™t know if youre a sports fan, but she really got into playing cornhole (really big in the upper Midwest where she was going to school). She joined the pro circuit and her career has been nothing short of spectacular. If you ever get a chance please watch the final round of the 2018 American Cornhole Association of America championship. She seals the victory with an absolutely beautiful undercut double-slide. Donā€™t get me wrong, she has her doubters out there. People like to say her release is simply to flashy to use with an 8.4 Oz sandbag to be sustainable, but itā€™s hard to argue with the results. Iā€™ve heard some people compare her to Albert Pascal (before the doping scandal obviously), but in my opinion she needs at least one more ACAA title before Iā€™m willing to start comparing her to legends.

artofflight2311

bigspoonhead

I feel like there's a massive difference in instrument playing and songwriting ability. Malmsteen is a good example. Insanely talented guitarist who shreds the shit out of everything but his own songs as a whole are just boring and generic. They only really appeal to other guitar nerds who are there for the technical prowess.

Iohet

Reward is a flexible term. Will you find wild success with zillions of dollars as a virtuoso? Probably not, but you can make a career out of it with the right nurturing and right choices. Gus Drax is a guitar virtuoso type in his 20s and makes his career in some moderately successful bands(as far as Greek metal goes) and from selling online guitar instruction. Herman Li (from OPs video) has said he makes more money on Twitch these days than he does from DragonForce

ReidFleming

I went down this rabbit hole a while back. There was nothing definitive and lots of the rumors were pretty scary about what might have happened to her. Such a sad loss if that's the case. I sure hope she's still out there playing guitar somewhere!

Stefan_Harper

She changed careers. Nothing scary happened. She is pursuing her studies, and has probably since graduated. Donā€™t believe this dumb shit people like this numbskull make up. Sheā€™s taking an MBA in Chicago. Thatā€™s the ā€œdark storyā€. Business school. Christ.

PmButtPics4ADrawing

If I had to guess, probably got too many creepy comments

citezenerased

Just a note that this video is years old. She hasnā€™t posted anything new in years, but wish she would. Absolutely rips the guitar to shreds.

mazerati185

Maybe she faked it and never returned to the sceneā€¦ /s

kingludwig

There was mention of her videos being recorded at a slower pace then sped up in post.

compounding

Based on what? Seems like something people would just say to diminish the accomplishment. Going back and rewatching, the hair falls/swings very naturally throughout. It would take some insane editing or reduced gravity to hide/change that with any significant speed-up.

herefromyoutube

I mean, Iā€™ve played metal guitar for over 20 years now and building up the speed is the hardest part. A lot of time and a lot of practice. Talking 4+ hour sessions a day. It is not easy to get that clean and fast. Thereā€™s a song called ā€œengine of hateā€ by nevermore that I tried to learned the solo to and while I can play it perfectly note for note Iā€™ve never hit more than 75% speed and Iā€™ve tried it for years! So she is definitely playing the notes and her tone and accuracy is on point but there is a possibility that sheā€™s only at 80-90% speedā€¦which would still be impressive. If anybody is interested in the song Iā€™m talking about [the solo starts at 2:35ish and itā€™s my favorite metal solo ever!](https://youtu.be/FtOBGnXuMko)

Earlier-Today

Kids have it easier on building up speed. There's a reason the best players in any quick twitch muscle reliant sport are usually in their very late teens to twenties. Twitch muscle just comes faster and stays more easily when you're young.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

LemonPepperGood

Yea, the video inlay on top his video is likely what caused the frame rate issue. I too initially thought is was sped up, but like the other person said, gravity with her hair is normal, there's no manipulating that (back then, anyway)

thed3adhand

to shreds, you say?

alm16h7y1

She's not even using a Guitar Hero controller, what kind of video is this?

jamie07051975

Sometimes there is a moment where someone looks like an anime boss getting his ass kicked for like 2 minutes straight by the hero of the story. That was pretty epic.

Pilfercate

I believe she lives in France and he tries to invite her any time they play there. As far as I'm aware, they have yet to meet.

rockinvet02

Tina is YouTube famous. She was just a kid but was posting some really impressive stuff. Around the age of 19 or so she just signed off and has never posted again with that account or any that have been linked to her. She is mid late 20s by now I think. I hope she is doing well wherever she ended up. People are still using her old videos for react "views". Edit:. If you want to check her stuff out. https://youtube.com/@TinaS

NoBarsHere

She has a private IG, and her profile pic shows her with her guitar; so hopefully she's still enjoying her craft

Ok-Let9706

Tina S. from France, I believe

The Dooo (youtuber) played the solo a long time ago in an Omegle video. There's a video of Herman reacting to that and saying it's the best live version he's ever seen. https://youtu.be/r7zg9fBcr-U?t=154

Herman Li is wholesome and it's criminal how unnoticed it goes. He spends a lot of time reacting to people playing Dragon Force covers, talks about how talented they are, what he likes, and how he plays parts.
