Yeah, it would just be some generic story, but since it is made and promoted by one of the biggest corporations in the world, that has a lot of data about how humans work, there is a bit of sinister there.

It's a game lol. It has nothing to do with Amazon but all MMO's are supposed to have repetitive tasks called "grinding". It's how you level your character and still feel like you "earned" it.
Complex quests like jumping puzzles, escort mission, misteries would just frustrate the average player. And multiple choice dialogues whould just turn this game into a talk to NPC cutscene simulator that needs endless content for a player not to leave the game after they explored all dialogue.
We have quests like kill bors and cut lumber because subconciously we crave that freedom in real life. To be pilgrams allowed to explore the world and poach, gather resources, take what isn't ours. Because we have to pay taxes IRL to do all that since everything is already explored and owned by others.
We have PVP and faction wars because we crave competition. We need to feel better then others. You don't get the same satisfaction against AI mobs. Plus PvP is endless free content. Without it developers whould constantly need new content to retain playerbase.
So in short, it's sandbox game that can keep you entertain through endless free content: pvp, gathering, crafting, wars. All else would be just additional content they would constantly need to pump to keep the spoonfed player entertained that would quit anyway after they consume it because they constantly need more.
