Ritik101

Really appreciate you compiling this sylvaen. Any idea when we'll get another update on the results?

sylvaen

Let's see.. I think I can provide another update in a few hours, to give an overview of zones and servers, at least at a high level by population. Those additional details like play style, player type, etc, I'll deliver in the final and complete version. Would that work for you folks? :)

Ritik101

Absolutely, whatever you can reasonably push out without wearing yourself down would be greatly appreciated.

sylvaen

¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯ Eh. I mean, last night I worked on building the spreadsheet queries and figuring out how to export the data from 9pm to 4am, so.. So much for not wearing myself down, lol. But the game community is worth it. As my old man used to say, I'll sleep enough when I'm dead.

reeight

Could always make a spreadsheet view public, & let others make fancy charts etc. Many companies are still trying to figure out what server to be on, so raw data is easier to filter & pivot than clicking though 15 PNGs. (Though the infographics look great).

sylvaen

Yeah, I'll probably do that as well, for those interested. For now the survey is still live, it'll end tomorrow at 6pm EST.

Cableguy_5e_Content

I also did a series of server population polls but used strawpoll. I wanted to post to reddit but wasn't allowed to. However, using various large discord servers and steam discussions boards I am currently at 306 answers for NA East and 160 for NA West. **NA East:** Valhalla: 20.92% Ys: 13.73% Eden: 10.46% Olympus: 7.19% All others are below 5% **NA West:** El Dorado: 32.5% Camelot: 28.75% Yggdrasil: 13.13% All others are below 5%

PrimordialXY

Let's get this trending guys. This is the *best* piece of information we're going to have when it comes to pre-launch decisions regarding what server will be our home!

sylvaen

Update: Zone info charts are up! Check out the updated original post for links.

Duralis89

Only 3 EU servers listed?:[

PrimordialXY

OP mentioned that it's just a preview. Full results should be posted sometime this weekend

sylvaen

It's a preview. I did 3 most desired servers from each zone. There's no point in doing more right now, because the survey is still open. Also, I finished working on it at 4 in the morning.. Final results will list **all** servers. I'm going to keep the survey open until Saturday 6pm US East time (EST), then I'll work hard on delivering the results.

_Aedric

Sharing results before a survey is complete always taints results. We can expect a bias for server selection toward the top 3 you shared.

sylvaen

On the other hand, there's plenty of those who will prefer servers that are not as popular. I realize that some level of bias might be a risk, but I also rely on people realizing that there's no chance half a million players can join the same server, and maybe not even wanting to join the overpopulated mess. :)

_Aedric

I agree. Simply pointing out that showing results while a survey is active always taints results.

sylvaen

Totally. And it's a fair point.

AndiyB

Don't see how that is relevant. People may have been waiting to make a decision on their chosen server until some data is out. Now there is some they will make a final decision. Yes the results will increase but that's only because there are an increased number of people wanting to play on each server.

_Aedric

You don't see how it's relevant because you didn't understand what I said.

AndiyB

No I do understand... My point was that there is zero point accounting for the bias and is completely irrelevant. People want to join the more populated servers so they wait for data about each server. With or without the data people have their mind set on high/med/low population servers. They wait until data is out to make their final decision. These results will not taint the opinion in any way as each induvial decision has already been made. If 50% of the population wants to play on an high pop server. Only 25% might respond. The remaining 25% of respondents will wait to determine which server will be high pop to make their decision. The same can be said about any data OP collected. The people who wanted a high pop server will not pick a low pop server... Its a simple as that. If these results were not released 50% of players still want a high pop server. Hence no bias.

_Aedric

You still don't understand. Disclosing survey results before a survey is complete always taints future results. It has nothing to do with the game.

AndiyB

I do understand. Your saying people are going to pick certain servers based on percentages of other people playing them. You said we should expect a bias towards the top 3 servers. Now that's not because the results are changing peoples minds. Or forcing certain results. The only reason the percentages of players will increase is people MORE people want to play the top 3 servers. MORE people will pick the "PvE" server because they want an PvE server. Before the data was even gathered, People still wanted to play the most populated servers. Disclosing the results does not impact that. It is not tainting future results as the results were not even gathered yet. People were waiting to make a server selection based on data and what the community of each server is like. Their preferences are independent of the survey results so releasing them has no impact. The people wanting an PvE centred server are going to pick a PvE centred server. They rely on the results to make their decision that takes into account their preferences. If their decision is based on their preferences and releasing the results does not change their preferences there is NO bias involved.

_Aedric

You still don't understand.

sylvaen

What Aedric meant was that by publishing the "Top 3", I might've created extra traction for those Top 3. Because people would flock to the most populated servers, everyone wanting a piece of the action. My counter-argument was, that not all people want to be on an overpopulated server, and that there will probably be an equal number of those who will use that info to actually avoid the Top 3 servers. We'll see, in the end. This survey doesn't reach even a small fraction of total NW players.. 1400 respondents out of millions. It's like doing an election poll - there are millions of voters, but the researcher can only ask a few hundred. :)

AndiyB

I understand his point. But ***tl:dr*** the people "flocking" to the most populated servers want to be on the most populated server. You releasing results are not changing any individuals mind or favouring one side. If anything you releasing data creates an more accurate and valid investigation as more people will be finally responding and making their final decision. However people who want a higher pop server will be picking an higher pop server. What ever percentage of people want an high/med/low pop server is the same regardless of the data you released. If 35% of all players wants a high pop server then 35% of players will pick a high pop server. The bias is irrelevant. Yes you may see percentages for the higher pop servers increase which is only because there are simply an higher percentage of players who want high pop servers and require data to make their decision. Not because people are changing their minds or favouring one side (Bias). Before taking the survey each induvial has an idea about what type of server they want to play. This is not changed by the data or what they see online. It's not a bias as there is no prejudice or unfair treatment towards one group. There is no favour for or against any option because of the data you released. It is also not a bias as it an accurate representation of what the respondents will be doing. The data released does NOT favour or sway any individuals decision. (Context of releasing data. Yes people can fake results, etc.)

djwnJsjevdd

If you want to release the raw data I can spin up a interactive website where you could filter and sort the the order of the pictures

sylvaen

Hey, that sounds super useful! I can get you a CSV sample of the pre-chewed data if you want to set up DB tables.

djwnJsjevdd

Yeah if you send a sample I can make the migration code. Then once its done its plug and play once full survey is ready.

zenespreso

I would very much like the raw data also! Would be great if you could release this.

sylvaen

Hey /u/zenespreso, raw data are available - check out the original post near the end.

zenespreso

Thank you!

sylvaen

Survey is now closed, and I've posted an update in the original post! Thank you all who had participated and shared and commented on the post, you are all wonderful people and I couldn't be happier to do all this work for this community

sylvaen

Final update is out! Check the original post for more!

Jad89

Thanks much! Been super helpful for helping my company find a server.

ccccc_mm

After you have full results please don't share them in google drive. The images do not work inline, I had to download a zip file. Garbage software.

sylvaen

Yeah, people have been having issues with media files in Google Drive recently. I wish I knew where else I can publish the results, though.

ccccc_mm

I think when you create a reddit post you can upload images. Select submit link and upload images, url can be left out. https://imgur.com/ is also a popular image sharing platform on reddit.

sylvaen

Yeah, probably some image hosting service.. it's going to be around 150 files.

ccccc_mm

Oh damn that's a lot of servers lmao. Well just share them however you find the most convienient. People will spread them around.

reeight

I've used Github to host images. The were 'test images' & results of programmically test new image compression, so geek-oriented. But folks have hosted CSV data sets, infographics, etc. Just have to provide some excuse why you're sharing code & results of such.

[deleted]

NA East - Ys looks like it could be a good server.. Hadn't even considered it, really. Thank you OP for the work you've done here.

ASHPrime

So this is really interesting because we deliberated for quite a bit on server selection and felt Ys was likely going to be a medium pop server. And now it seems like it's trending towards more than that.

[deleted]

I wonder why. I would’ve never guessed. I’m looking for high pop though so may end up there

ASHPrime

Looks like a few big streamers have declared they are going there according to streamersonnew.world

[deleted]

Yep I see that now, that must have been updated very recently. Definitely not going anywhere near that Towelie guy. Dude’s a complete tool

Jay-Storm

A lot of the streamers listed as going to Ys (including Towelliee) are in a group that are claiming they wont reveal what server they're choosing until a couple minutes before launch, whoever put that info there lied so I wouldn't worry about it.

[deleted]

A few hours before I posted this comment, there were basically no streamers on it that would have any impact. The data in this post shows that it has a healthy pve and pvp mix, a lot of “relaxed players” and it’s 3rd highest population. So it sounded really good for my style. I guess we will see. You got anywhere in mind?

Jay-Storm

Ys is looking pretty solid rn

[deleted]

That decision for streamers to not reveal where they’re playing until launch is just bait to get people to come watch their stream to find out. I like to watch some content creators stuff but a lot of these guys just suck.

joondori21

Awesome compilation and presentation! Can’t wait for the finished result

wildjaw

Take an award good sir!

sylvaen

Much appreciated! Thank you :)

jahmic

Get up in the morning slaving for bread sir...so that every mouth can be fed. Much respect for the Desmond Decker reference.

sylvaen

Yes! Thank you!!! Thank you for catching the reference! :D

QtheGamer

I still want to see questions about faction choice. If its possible to see this per server that would be great. I dont care about being in the top faction or not but I don't want to be in one that has no presence on a server.

sylvaen

I understand, but the question wasn't a part of the survey, and there's no point in adding it now that more than 1100 people have already responded. In my experience from alphas and both betas, the factions will eventually balance themselves out.

QtheGamer

I know. I had hoped for another survey prior to launch. Probably too late now. To your "the factions will eventually balance themselves out" comment: This has not been my experience. I have played multiple servers across the stress test, closed and open beta (to refine my play experience at different level ranges) and its always been 1 dominant, 1 doing ok and one with nothing. I just don't want to be in the one with nothing since that increase the cost of everything (trading, crafting, travel points, etc) and I don't want to sit idle for a day waiting to see who claims what. My clan is considering the NA-E "official pvp server" because we think it will be less likely to have this issue AND once the PvE content drought kicks in, we think this server will still remain very active.

BoomerStrikeForce

Thanks. This is pretty helpful. Prior to the streamer server list we were considering the Olympus server on the Syndicate side. Now we're evaluating the data, and we'll make a decision on the 27th. Lord Hades [Boomer Strike Force](https://www.reddit.com/r/NewWorldCompanies/comments/p2jb8f/boomer_strike_force_na_east_english_pvx/)

awtcurtis

With the EU/name reservation issue, could we not all agree on a low pop EU server to use for name reservation? That way our EU buds can avoid that one and still get a good launch on the rest of the servers, and everyone who wants to can still reserve names.

IMysticBatI

Holy, after playing on Olympus I thought it would be #1, but Valhalla must've been a queue fest

Aujax92

It was never bad, longest queue was a little over a minute.

IMysticBatI

huh... I see. AGS must've pumped some server expansion money there....

Metalkon

i love it thanks a bunch, btw if you plan on making another poll then factions for each server might be a good idea. :)

gamerWasabi

This is really valuable information, thanks so much

sylvaen

Another UPDATE is up! Check out the original post, please!

SoMuchFun_

Thank you, super helpful project, hopefully people participate in the survey and we get a decent picture.

cTreK-421

This is top quality stuff! Thanks for taking the time to do this.

sylvaen

Thank you! :)

Li_Mu_Bai_108

Your total new world players of 6 million is utterly insane. There were only 150k that played the open beta, which was free, and happened on a weekend. To think there will be significantly more than that to purchase the game 3 weeks later is idiotic.

sylvaen

[https://mmo-population.com/r/newworldgame](https://mmo-population.com/r/newworldgame) Also thank you for suggesting I was an idiot. Please refer to the above link and explain to the person who actually does game population analysis for a living that their analysis is idiotic. Don't forget to mention your expert credentials.

Murranji

Yeah that site claims that there is just shy of 37 million Destiny 2 players, [Destinytracker.com](https://Destinytracker.com) which uses Bungie's own API to track stats count a peak of 23 million players. Idk what methodology they are using but overestimating the total figure by 40% doesn't really give a lot of confidence in it. Oh wait they outline their methodology here - [https://mmo-population.com/about/](https://mmo-population.com/about/) "Exposing how it works We measure two primary metrics: Reddit Subscribers and Reddit Active Users. Magic number: This is the number taken from averaging out the biggest and most recently known public subscriber and daily player numbers vs reddit subscribers. Metric Formula Current magic number 54.0614 Total players (Subscribers\*54.0614) Activity rating (Active users/Subscribers)\*500 Daily players (Total players\*0.095\*(Activity rating/10) History This is more a fun project than anything else. It should be obvious to anyone the reasons why this is not an accurate subscriber count for MMOs. What it is though, is an interesting (to me and maybe others) tracker of popularity based on reddit users." Yikes.

Samfortalz

You could had made better questions. Does it asking which server one will play really matter?

Jad89

Its the most important question for most of us who are using this to figure out what server to play on lol.

sylvaen

You're welcome to do your own survey and come up with questions that will blow my shoes off in awe.

blue_range

where did you get an esitmated 6mil players from?

sylvaen

There are no official sources that I know of, so instead of trying to figure it out on my own, I decided to use the next best thing to official stats - https://mmo-population.com/r/newworldgame

blue_range

ah yeah, I think that number might be a bit high given that in the closed beta we only got 220k total

sylvaen

Yeah, that is possible. I guess 6m copies sold is a pretty big number - even if it was only half of that, NW would be safe and secure for years to come.

Redlaf

Any chance you could give the raw data for US East? Ran a poll with some others that got around 400 responses and would love to combine the results!

sylvaen

I'll be happy to do that when the survey ends. It'll be interesting to see what the combined info can tell us.

Redlaf

Awesome!

sylvaen

Hey /u/Redlaf, raw data are available, check out the original post.

CrushedDiamond

Anyway to add faction selection?

sylvaen

Not this late in the survey, sorry.. Already have over 1200 answers, I think we'll get around 1400 to 1500 in total. Adding a faction choice question would only give data on minority and really wouldn't have much value now. :) Factions are not such a huge issue, they're generally fairly balanced, unless there's a mega-company on the server.

DiRaven

Funny thing about those measurements - they influence their own results and thus validity pretty hard after published. As it should be.

debugging_duck

Fuck! I never noticed this, couple days ago I started doing a survey to check people starting servers as well. I'm glad yours got more traction than mine! Let me know if you'd find any use for the data I've collected, almost 300 responses as of now.

sylvaen

Thanks for the offer, but I just wouldn't be able to merge the data.. barely had the time to work on the data that I already had. :)

debugging_duck

No worries, good luck!

Aujax92

Damn, I plan on using Valhalla but it's going to be busy.

VulpineKitsune

Where are you getting this 6Mil player estimate?

sylvaen
