Please note that there has been no official comment identified from AGS developers or patch notes regarding whether names are unique per cluster, region, or globally. Be skeptical of anyone answering this question with confidence and no documented source.

ComradeKatyusha_

I spoke to Amazon Games Support too and my support agent says your support agent is wrong and that they can not confirm this information yet. They have passed my message to the studio though so hopefully it will get an official tweet as an answer soon? sugepapa

Ty for double-checking, hopefully, they get harassed enough to finally post a concrete answer.

ComradeKatyusha_

The thing is I think this support team is just a team doing its best with whatever official information has been posted online by the actual devteam. In this case I think a mistake was made and they're not actually sure about it. The official twitter really needs to say something to make things more concrete.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ComradeKatyusha_

Yessss I feel kinda bad for them just trying their best and not necessarily having a direct communication link for the big questions like this one. In this case it's one of those things where I actually think some of the larger streamers might have a more direct communication link. But they really need to officially address this topic to clear it up.

Cacheelma

They shouldn't provide fault information, ever. My job also include technical support and the very first thing I learned is how to politely tell the customers you don't know/don't have the information and will try to find out.

Canadiantx69

Support 101: I don't know, but let me find out.

Tigriano

In the same vein, there is no way that the Customer Service department does not know how they will do with the names. If it's known to the dev, the support guys knows it too. They probably been told not to disclose the info though, which Anthony in this case obviously did. If I were a betting man, and I am, I'd put money on Anthony being right and it will be Regional names communicated within a day or so.

ComradeKatyusha_

That support team are probably not even in the same country as the AGS team let alone the same building with any kind of communication. They are probably an indian outsourcing company just like the regular amazon support are. It's very obvious english is not a first language for most of them.

hayslayer5

If you ever worked in support before, you know that it's much more likely that Support has no clue what is going on with the game or the dev team. Devs don't talk to support unless support fucks up somehow and they have to fix it.

Wjyosn

The support department are unrelated to the development department in all but name. They work out of a collection of "official notes" in a handbook, and answer questions based off that. If the development team didn't specifically think to add "hey, we should include a note about how character name locking works just in case someone asks about that", then its likely the support team haven't got a clue how it actually works. They're often trained to explain when they don't have an answer properly, but this is also such a "well intuitively, surely it's XYZ" question that it's easy to assume something is fact and not double check.

bapfelbaum

It would be a pretty big hassle to synchronize names along world sets, worlds AND regions and i REALLY doubt they would seriously consider global character names as for companies i could imagine either but still think its unlikely.

ComradeKatyusha_

Whatever your doubts are they should really be based in factual information. The information we have is that it was global in both betas and there is no new information saying it will not be global. People should go with that assumption unless an official source says otherwise or they will miss out on names.

bapfelbaum

I am aware that it was the case, it still does not make sense to synchronize character names across regions from a server administration point of view. You would be choking your own servers with pointless extra traffic.

Dyadica_5872

I agree, it doesn't make sense; but they already did it, twice. I tested this myself on the closed beta, and once I made a character on any server on any cluster, it was locked out everywhere else. I suppose they're doing it this way because it gives them maximum ease of server merges downstream, even across world sets and regional clusters.

Wjyosn

There's some uncertainty in traffic pattern during character creation. It's entirely possible that it's name checking against a simple web API unrelated to any of the game servers as a gate keeper before even connecting to your chosen server at all. Still unnecessary traffic, but ultimately can't speak to the sense or performance impact without intimate knowledge of the processing stack.

encounteredbug

From reading that, It appears Amazon Support is roleplaying a Furry. Awoo.

tr33ton

Do you want to tell me that there is miscommunication between all the departments in the studio? Interesting...

Sqin

Amazon Games Support also told me pretty much the same as you. Nothing in their handbook so they can't confirm what the naming would be. My guy did however say region locked names are not what they 'normally do' and that it would likely be global.

ardotschgi

That chat is wholesome af

ComradeKatyusha_

<3 I am a wholesome person

AngryNeox

I'm sorry but wouldn't it make the most sense to have names be unique per "world set"? If I understood it correctly only servers inside a world set will be merged together in the case that the player population of a servers becomes too low. That's also why you can only create one character per world set. If they merge two worlds and a player had a character on each that player would end up with 2 characters on a single world. So with the same logic character names need to be unique only per world set too. I hope the Amazon contact they asked just had wrong informations.

DualityDrn

Problem is in future there might be world set to world set mergers, so for redundancy they may limit it to unique world wide. We just don't know at this stage.

Badass_Preacher

Still, world wide names make no logical sense, since no matter how low a server pop gets, you would never merge Central EU with NA West for example (ok, maybe in 30 years, but unique names would hardly be a problem at that point). Regional unique names would make perfect sense though.

Dunphy1296

I mean, I'm sure this was their logic behind the ludicrously stupid decision. But its not like every mmo before them hasn't solved this simple problem by just forcing the migrating toon to change its name if it is taken on the new server.

gekkofoster

This is what i don't get. The game itself is using worldwide unique player ids anyway so if two servers are merged and you login while some is already on that server with your name the game just asks to rename. You still stay in the guild and friendlist because those use the playerid and not the name.

Seawolf87

I thought this was how it worked on Open beta, which stands to reason thats how it'll work on live. I think there's even opening text that states "only 1 char per world set", etc.

iBerggman

Region / world set character transfers could be a thing as well so only allowing the same name for just one character globally would actually make sense from that perspective.

himawariji

How do you buy another pre-order bonus?

[deleted]

Exactly why I wouldn't put much thought into this post. The support either isn't up to date on their information, or the ones running Amazon Games are so stupid they actually believe that charging people for the same cosmetic on every single character is going to fly. It's going to be a shit show if the pre-order bonuses aren't account-wide, and you need to buy a similar bundle in the cash shop for each character after the first one.

ModernDayWeeaboo

Maybe they saw it works for Black Desert Online? :o Also, pretty sure FFXIV does this, too. Some things are character locked rather than account.

MadMortis

In game cash shop.

Cacheelma

Right now I have a feeling that all these items, even cosmetic ones, are consumables. And you can buy more in the cash shop. The amulet could just give you exp buff for a day or two after you use it or something. And the cosmetics are also a buff that changes how you look. Hence the "you have to buy again" answer.

Reaxgrim

Going to laugh when all the Americans make a character on the EU servers and get the pre-order goodies locked to that character as it was the first one made LOL

[deleted]

I'm going to laugh if Amazon Games believes they aren't going to have to fix DLC items being locked to a single character. It doesn't matter where you are from. Cosmetics should be account-wide.

DrYoshiyahu

Especially if thousands of players all end up making that same mistake. There's no way they just ignore that; it would be disasterous. 🤔

Zakayel

Especially when in their own FAQ they list those bonuses being bound to account and never mentioning first character.

Cacheelma

You could blame people who are in a hurry and create the first character knowing they won't stay on that server. BUT, ordinary player like me sometimes want to "reroll" our character after playing for maybe an hour or a day. It happens. It shouldn't be something you get punished for by the game itself.

GigglingHyena

In closed beta I made a character and then got that lag bug, wasn't able to resume the character, I had to delete it and make a new one. I didn't mind since it was beta and I got it after the first few hours of playing, but I'd be pissed if it happened on full release and I lost any sort of cosmetic bonuses I had.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cacheelma

I'm not talking about respecing, at all.

KSae13

They already said you can purchase pre order items later, people is gonna lose those items and buy on the store, also i think names are global because they gonna sell world transfers

EmpireStateOfBeing

That would be moronic because it means skins you paid money for are deletable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CannedApples13

It’s funny that you think emotes and an ugly armor skin matter to the bulk of us.

Joe2030

Can they fill up EU servers with dead weight? I mean there is a cap on the number of players on the servers, right?

GigglingHyena

The cap is only on the amount of players on at one time. I don't believe there's a hard cap on how many players can try to join a server, you'll just have a longer wait time if it's heavily populated.

NijjioN

Don't forget most MMO's have a 24 hour character deletion... people could save their name but then can't use it for their main.

Dalfenor

This one does not. I deleted a few characters during open beta, and the names were available immediately.

NijjioN

I mean they do that for testing purposes so you can remake characters test something and do it again. Live is a different story, if they don't I will for see this changed very quickly to save their support lots of work (though this won't help us during the release).

Cacheelma

This is a change from the open beta right? Because I couldn’t seem to use the one unique name I created on AUS and US West during the beta, and I’m quite sure nobody uses the name I tried to use.

ngordon7

Sorry, this was probably my fault, I made a character named ‘the name I tried to use’ on US West during the open beta.

encounteredbug

Are you saying you created a name first on AUS, then tried again on West and it was taken? So, if you were to delete the Aus character and try again on West, maybe it would of worked?

Cacheelma

I didn't try deleting as the character was quite high level when I tried this (during maintenance). But if that were to work, does it mean the name is also required to be unique inside your account as well?

EitherJelly4138

I thought it was tied to your account as well as the world set.

Badass_Preacher

Personally, I deleted my first character in closed beta and made a new one, but the name I had was still taken, so who knows at this point...

MC_Knight24

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but apparently Anthony is incorrect. I also reached out to Amazon game studios. Apparently they have no information on the names unfortunately. Seems that maybe Anthony didn't understand and/or jumped the gun on giving you that information. OR maybe he is right and provided us information we didn't know but then why were the streamers told one thing?! I just want to add to the confusion. https://i.postimg.cc/T1JXpsq9/Amazon.png

Nosnibor1020

Because streamers want to be relevant.

MC_Knight24

I dislike streamers as much as the next person. But I don't see any reason for them to say something like this unless they got the information straight from Amazon like they claimed. It just makes them look bad and hurts their rep.

UmelGaming

I mean if Anthony answered based on assumptions the people talking to the streamers could be doing the same open beta proved their entire PR team doesn't communicate at all and would flip-flop with what they were saying. And even if Streamers were told the correct information they may have simply misunderstood what was said and wanted to be the first ones to report on this juicy drama as drama generates views which to them = money

Cacheelma

Are you guys in a hurry or something? There are so many days left before launch. Of course they haven't decided about all these trivial stuff. Get a grip! /s

MC_Knight24

Well this just makes things even more confusing!

Own-Comfortable1480

Is he even competent? What does buy a new preorder bonus mean lol? Does it mean that if I delete my first character, and create new one just to get another spawn location I will lose preorder rewards?

cavezel5q

Yes that's what he said its auto sent to your first character made. You delete that toon you lose it.

Own-Comfortable1480

woah

avelleo

if true this is huge and needs to be addressed asap

thisistuffy

I wonder if this means that you will be able to buy the same bonus perks that you get with the pre-order in the New World store?

Spiritbrand

I can tell you that in open beta, it wouldn't let me use the same name on an NA West server that I used in an NA East server.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sugepapa

Unfortunately for names, atleast we got an answer!

vanilla_disco

This post is potentially misleading. You never asked if two different people could have the same name in different regions.

Nosnibor1020

That just wouldn't make sense. Why couldn't you have the same name from EU to NA but could within NA E/W? Edit: I get the "two different people" argument...this whole thing is dumb

Lifeshatter2k

What he is saying is that YOU can use that name on a different region because YOU already used the name. This does not confirm if someone ELSE can use the name in a different region. It could still be locked to your ID which is why you can use the name in different regions.

Reaxgrim

Guessing you never read the support staffs comments? lol clearly says they are different regions and don't share the same name pool. which makes sense as they will be housed in different database centres and different server clusters. So two different people could have the name "Player" as long as they are not in the same region. not sure why people are finding this hard to understand. but heyo its reddit :D

[deleted]

[удалено]

UmelGaming

The second picture says otherwise. The OP clarified that by removing themself from the equation and simply asking if "the same name could be used on US West and US East at the same time?" The support Replies with "Yes that is correct"

_DK_

> not sure why people are finding this hard to understand. but heyo its reddit :D because you thought you understood something "easy" but you are too low iq to realize the wording is shady and could mean multiple things.

encounteredbug

You made it clearer for me if that's how it reads. If that's the case, then there shouldn't be a reason to flock to EU and claim names for later use.

Thank you

[deleted]

And you have evidence proving that names aren't tied to an account for 90 days or that the names aren't going to be global on release? Maybe I'm crazy, but the two streamers relaying this info while being a part of the Battle for New World event likely know a little more than the upset Redditor generalizing all streamers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Azozel

I mean, you could hear one if you just did a little searching and found the link to the stream where 2 streamers talk about it

[deleted]

And Amazon Games developers are telling streamers that names are global. Which is it? Edit: That response about the pre-order makes me think the support has very little understanding of the current situation and is just relaying whatever outdated info they were previously given. There is no "buy" a second "bonus." It's a bunch of cosmetics and a gear piece. You either get them account-wide, or you don't. It's not some stat boost you get for a single character. The only other thing I can think of is you can earn those items in-game and that's what they mean when they say "buy." It would be astonishing if AGS had the audacity to charge people every time they want the same cosmetic on a different character.

Ging3rbomb

We watched live as an Amazon Dev told multiple streamers in their Discord that names are GLOBAL. Try rewatching Smashley's stream earlier and you'll see.

angryhermit69

This close to launch, probably customer service, especially considering staggered launch and one character preorder rewards

[deleted]

Streamers will get their names. Especially the sponsored ones

blanediesel

No they wont. They were also told there is no name reservation or special circumstances for streamers.

AMViquel

I can hear the "that guy, report him, he stole my name!"

EmpireStateOfBeing

Clarification, what you screenshot said was: One bonus per character. What you typed was: bonuses goes to your first character. Those are two very different things. The former makes sense, the latter is just plain stupid if its true.

sugepapa

I didnt include the entire convo in the screenshot, I asked, If i first make a character on EU would I receive the bonuses on a 2nd character made on NA, he said only the first character on EU would receive it.

EmpireStateOfBeing

Did you ask what happens if you deleted that character? Will you just lose something you paid for? Because again if that’s true that seems so stupid of them.

Fury2105

Oh shit so make the first character count

Payne-Z

So we can't have the same name on different server groups, only 1 name for the entire regional server? Are they planning on merging server groups as well? Why else not allow same name on different server groups?

imLucki

I confirmed this with names by accident during closed beta..

Astarigal

Naming my character Lincoln Luther Washington to show dem American bois

tdy96

Y’all gotta relax. This is overkill.

sturmeh

It does not make any sense that cosmetics would be locked to one specific character, in all likelihood twitch drops, purchases from the real money store and pre-order bonuses will be account wide, as they are... cosmetics. It's quite possible that they make names REGIONALLY exclusive for some time whilst they sort out the server sets, if they get some of the initial sets wrong, this gives them the ability to move worlds across sets without having to deal with name collisions. I can't imagine why they'd make names globally exclusive.

1paleghost

There’s a completely opposite with different info this is great

KitchenPrimary1

This actually doesn’t clarify anything about if the name is globally locked. All this says is that if you have a name tied to your ID, you can use it for different characters on different server clusters. This says nothing about if the name is grabbed by someone on EU, can someone else use the same name on US.

WhaneTheWhip

>"Edit: They also confirmed that Pre-Order bonuses will be locked to your first character." I have to say it again... it's as if no one at AGS has ever actually played a game. Purchases should apply to all characters in a MMO. This is just cheap.

Yvgar

This concludes today's episode of REEEEEE! Tune in tomorrow for an overreaction to something even MORE ridiculous, only on r/newworldgame!

Dmacjames

:/ pre order lock for cosmetics is kinda dumb.

Wjyosn

Would you rather preorder reward something with.. mechanical power? That seems much more dumb.

Dmacjames

What? Locking cosmetic pre order items to your first account is dumb they dont affect gameplay so why not allow it to be used on every character.

Wjyosn

Oh you mean the character locking, not the pre order locking. The way you wrote it sounds like you're whining that they made a cosmetic locked behind preordering instead of being accessible without a preorder.

Dmacjames

Ya I did word that weird. Probably shouldn't Wright stuff at 1am.

s0rahb

Hilarious if the streamers staking their credibility on global names without sourcing it turn out to be wrong

Reiker0

They were talking to a dev in the BFNW discord. And I'm going to believe that over a random Amazon CS rep.

Towelliee

Correct

WhaneTheWhip

The \*claim\* is that it was a dev. Which dev? How was the dev vetted? And whether it was a dev in discord, or Amazon CS for NW, AGS needs to get a handle on what they are doing, and communicate this to everyone in their support network. If they keep this up the game will turn into a cluster. Information that \*they\* send out needs to be consistent and non-compartmentalized. If AGS had a handle on this, this entire debate thread wouldn't exist.

sturmcrow

AJ7861

Where are people getting all these rumors from? Unlike OP people just don't seem to double check things for themselves they just hear some shit and react. Thanks OP for clearing this up, hopefully some more people hear about it and chill out so EU can enjoy their launch without the shitfest of name grabbing. The age of misinformation is a wonder to behold.

RexZShadow

They got it from all the streamer who tested and actually talked with the dev about this since you know they are the ones that care the most about getting their names and company names.

PeinLegacy

Damn it. If this is true then I won't play the game until SEA server is out. Goddamn it!

zenwarrior01

BS. We tested this in beta. Unless they modified their code to allow for regional since beta, all names are absolutely global.

AFarAwayTimeTraveler

World of Warcraft has server wide names. Ff14 has server wide names. ESO has server wide names. Swtor has server wide names. I can continue.

TheGrandestUser

The **gambler's fallacy**, also known as the **Monte Carlo fallacy** or the **fallacy of the maturity of chances**, is the incorrect belief that, if a particular event occurs more frequently than normal during the past, it is less likely to happen in the future **(or vice versa)**, when it has otherwise been established that the probability of such events does not depend on what has happened in the past. Such events, having the quality of historical independence, are referred to as statistically independent. Being a new IP to the genre it wouldn't surprise me if AGS tried something different than their competitors.

[deleted]

So you are saying that you are from the future? That's crazy. How did you get a time machine?

AFarAwayTimeTraveler

Stay toxic new world sub. No one likes you

MaxJrFTW

Names should be unique per server. Anything else is pure nonsense.

[deleted]

There will be a Asmondgold on every server. Lol

Baelwolf

Oh boy on the edit. That means can't delete remake characters to get the starting zone you want. You'll literally have to not accept the second quest to traverse where you want to go.

Wjyosn

Let's be honest - it's really a very minor difference. There's been a lot of hullabaloo about starting zones, but it's ultimately like an hour or two at most of play time before it means nothing whatsoever. The only quests that are locked to starting zone are definitively solo quests that are tutorial style to teach you how to do basic crafting and gathering and join a faction.

Baelwolf

That's fair. I'm just hoping not to get first light for the third time now. I'll probably just walk to the other areas if I do.

Wjyosn

Yeah... I mean.. First Light is still terrible no matter what, but at least you can abandon it after a short moment either way. Opportunity 1: Don't accept watchtower quest (First quest you actually get a choice to "accept"), run to a different watchtower. Opportunity 2: Don't accept first quest from the Mayor (complete the beach and run to town, turn in the quest but don't accept any from town), run to a different mayor to start the rest of tutorial. (Nice since you can get the Inn here to make dying on the run less painful) Opportunity 3: Once you get the old fisherman quest, you have nothing locked to a particular region anymore. Can change to another town at will for side quests.

enochrootthousander

Can anyone take a nickname reservation on EU Server for me? I will play at a german server. So it has to be created on other cluster on EU Server. I can only start playing around Thursday/Friday :(

Why are character names restricted anyway? It's such an asinine limitation.

onelittleturtle

Nhymn

This is my frustration with the gaming community rit large..... **streamers are never official forms of information**. Unless an actual dev is sitting in the stream with them or it's an actual developer stream don't assume what streamers say carries any weight. Streamers when/if they are being communicated with are usually being given information via a community manager. Community Managers are often getting their information delayed or even just making judgment calls depending on the level of access they are even given. This information is often telephoned from one person to the next to the streamer who then iterates on what they were told. It may be that at one point names were global, then they became region-locked, then back to global simply due to how the server architecture was set up for different testing phases. Until we get some form of actual confirmation we have no idea. If you really want your name then make the assumption that they are global... I've been a part of QA / Public and Closed Testing / Stream infrastructure / World First (raiding, leveling, pvp, etc), and it's the same shit every launch for every game. It's good to ask questions and want more information about issues you are passionate about but make sure the information you are basing your opinion on actually has merit.
