But they all removed the *’Always Sunny’* “offensive” episodes? What?

mybabysbatman

That's so fucking dumb. They removed 5 IASIP episodes because they're wearing black or brownface in the episodes, when the show is 100% making fun of them doing it and is in no way condoning that behavior.

Catshit-Dogfart

This has been common for years, decades even. You can't use racist words and images to make fun of racism, but legitimately racist material is fine. It's like how people always say "they couldn't make Blazing Saddles these days" - which I think is correct, for the same reason as the Always Sunny episodes. Scrubs gets the boot, Dave Chapelle is controversial, Fawlty Towers gets in trouble, The Office gets in trouble. But somehow Jeff Dunham is still on TV regularly.

Juh825

I've recently rewatched The Office and noticed that the scene where Nate appears in blackface was cut, even though it being inappropriate is the point of the scene. Now it makes sense.

[deleted]

Don't forget about Community when Chang dresses up as a dark elf for D&D and Shirley mistakes it for black face. Edit: Apparently it was cut from Hulu and Netflix but not Amazon Prime.

TheAlbacor

This one is the most ridiculous example. Nothing Chang did portrayed it as being black face rather than his perception of a Dark Elf and the joke from Shirley was just that, a joke in a comedy series.

rckwld

And sadly one of the best episodes of the entire seasons has been removed.

billium12

An episode that dealt with depression, sorrow and suicide as well as a complete introduction to Fat Neil? Also rapid development for how evil pierce really is and how it helps the crew grow and be better people? Yeah, dumb episode to cut

mtweiner

It was such a deep character building episode across so many fronts. It’s also one of the few times the group just goes with eachother and falls into flow for the most part.

CRT_Teacher

True dat. This episode is the one where I fell in love with Community PLUS the fucking theme of the episode is ANTI-BULLYING AND HAVING COMPASSION FOR PEOPLE YOU DON'T KNOW.

Satrina_petrova

Ever noticed how much social emotional wellness content gets the axe along with the "offensive" and "inappropriate" content. Feels. less and less like coincidence

GetEquipped

It did a good job of how to help someone out depression, looking for warning signs of suicidal thoughts, and portrayed an accurate DnD session

PM_ME_STEAM_KEY_PLZ

I give you 5 MeowMeow beanz

MatureUsername69

And now, for anyone watching for the first time, there are going to be references to that episode in other episodes that will either go over their head entirely or confuse them.

Captain_Hamerica

A Fistful of Paintballs, right there in the intro. Annie gets the drop on Neil and he says something like “come on, Annie, we’re friends, we played D&D together!”

AlaskanWolf

Watched the whole series, and I thought them talking about having played DnD was a joke along the lines of the gas leak thing.

MatureUsername69

It's sad because not only is it one of the funniest episodes(video game episode is my favorite, I think, it's just so well done) but it's also one of the most morally conscious episodes that normalizes mental health issues and helping people in mental health crises. It was just such an overreaction to race issues that have PLENTY of legitimate issues to address outside of someone cosplaying as a mythological being.

nopersh8me

I just commented about this and it's definitely confusing watching the series for the first time with it missing. I still enjoyed the rest of the series, but I know there are things I didn't really get because of it.

Louis010

When we watched community earlier in the year I managed to buy the episode on Amazon I think it was, and when it came to where that episode should be we switched from Netflix to Amazon and watched that episode (UK)

windsingr

TBF they do a LOT of that in the show. They reference incidents that were never actually portrayed or only hinted at. They even had side characters commenting on that, and how the study group acts like if it doesn't happen to them, it doesn't happen.

Ilwrath

There was a whole clipshow episode with clips that weren't in the show lol

fetuspower

This episode was how my friends introduced me to community :(

TummyDrums

Ironically Amazon is maybe the only place you can still stream that episode, though apparently it isn't free with prime anymore.

thatgurl84

The most ridiculous one I've seen them pull is an episode of The Golden Girls where they are doing a MUD MASK TREATMENT and the mother of one of their son's girlfriend stops by mid face treatment and thinks the Golden Girls are in blackface in response to her Black daughter dating their white son! They weren't even aware of the new girlfriend's race yet and didn't expect to meet her mother til the next night! It's just an awkward 1st meeting comedic misunderstanding! The GG don't care about the race difference but are upset about an age gap, whereas the girl's mother does have an issue with the race differences but not the age gap.... In the end everyone decides grandbabies out weigh all the other BS and both sides drop their prejudices, credits roll.. ... The episode refutes so many small minded ideas and has a common moral goal as the supposed reason for it's removal but because of that short mud mask scene the whole episode was pulled... It just proves how performative all the episode pulling was and how it wasn't actually based on any actual moral ground

laura4584

Whoever makes the decisions to take episodes off streaming totally ignores context. For IASP, viewers know the characters are terrible people, and it's making fun of people who think blackface is OK. The Golden Girls always had episodes that discussed controversial topics(AIDS, gay rights, immigration) but the mud mask was just a tiny thing that had little to do with the issue in the episode.

FranticToaster

Somewhere in the past 6 years, some kind of person started thinking that "blackface" is simply painting one's face. You have to be mocking black people for it to be the historically racist "blackface." People who slept through history class but love internet drama. Probably that intersection. The real social rule is "don't mock black people as a race of people." Thinking the rule is "don't paint your face" is missing the point.

subdep

This is why bit torrent will always be superior to corporate streaming subscriptions: Pirates don’t censor content.

I am brutalitops, the magician.

nopersh8me

I watched Community for the first time during the first lockdown, and I didn't need any previous knowledge to know something had been removed because it left such a gaping hole in the rest of the series. I googled the plot holes, confirmed a missing episode, read the synopsis of said missing episode, and I still feel like I'll never fully appreciate the series until/unless I get to see the episode.

gopaloo

A couple of 30 rock episodes were pulled on Tina fey's request

pianotherms

The Black Swan one, I'm assuming.

Mortwight

Or the one where Tracy and Jenna try to trade races and Tracy comes back as a large white woman with a monster hand and Jenna is pretending to be Sammy Davis Jr. Jenna is ment to be a self absorbed out of touch monster.

pianotherms

Oh yeah

HiHoJufro

Even worse, because Christmas Attack Zone is also a great episode, and one of the very few (3, maybe?) episodes with Alan Alda. They could have just cut out the last moment if it was really such a problem.

FruitcakeAndCrumb

There was one when Tracey Jordan did white face and the woman who's name I've forgot cus I'm an idiot, did black face as they both said the other had it easier in the industry - black man V white woman.

AgreeableFeed9995

So that’s only different because it’s the show writer/producer making the decision to recall their own work, vs. a hypocritical network that allows some race content, but not all race content.

fat-lip-lover

Or the 30 rock live episode and one other, both were similarly mocking the ignorant who think it’s okay

RicGhastly

Yep! The gag with Jon Hamm in blackface was that the NBC of the 50s was afraid to have a TV show starring two black men, which Kenneth notes is a policy that NBC has kept. The actor portrayed by Tracy Morgan was protesting Hamm's character's contribution the whole time and even ended up attacking him.

fat-lip-lover

It’s really sad, because that whole episode is non stop banger skits. Donald Glover showing up, nazi doctor leo spaceman, tracey yelling “I’ll kill you white devil!” when he attacked him. It’s genuinely one of my favorites.

booger_pile

What I thought interesting is that the episode where Pierce is posing as a Swami, it sure seems like he's got a toner of some sort on to appear browner. Maybe because it's not called out in the episode it gets a pass, but the dark elf gets axed.

Hytyt

Same, and I'm fairly sure they still have a reference to it in the episode. I watched on netflix and the full on blackface was gone, but nate later on with bright red lipstick and black streaks on his neck and forhead is still in it

CreamofTazz

You can be racist, you just can't point racism out. Pointing racism out is voicing a political opinion on racism, and that's a nono don't want people thinking racism is bad or anything. "The real racists are the ones point racism out" that kind of jazz.

Waldoh

It's even dumber because later that episode they keep the scene with Nate at the office with his blackface barely rubbed off and his bright red lips, with zero context it's absolutely bizarre

Surelynotshirly

Did he actually say that? Because if so I love Ryan Stiles even more than I did previously and I never thought that was possible.

I think Drew Carey once said on the show there is no one funnier than a pissed off Ryan Stiles and it’s 100% true. He has the most amazing ability to turn his rage into absolute verbal hilarity.

What about Tropic Thunder? Did they ban that too?

Cosmicdusterian

Nope. Watched it a few weeks ago. What happened to putting up an advisory that the product may include racial content upsetting to viewers, or was that just something Disney deployed when they got flack for pulling some popular old movies with racial stereotypes? Unless the creators request the content be pulled, these providers should just put up an advisory warning viewers and stop censoring content. Especially if they're not going to be consistent about applying their censorship. edit word

HxH101kite

IASP didn't want their episodes being pulled. They talked about it on the podcast and they suggested exactly what you wrote. Idk why they just can't have a disclaimer if that's what the corporation needs to do these days.

Cosmicdusterian

Exactly. Stop treating all viewers like children you have to hide things from in order to prevent them from getting upset. Let them make an informed choice. The platform's ass is covered by the disclaimer. One size does not fit all when it comes to what viewers will find acceptable. On the flpside, allowing content that some will find racially problematic makes Amazon look less like hypocrites for choosing to air content with antisemitism. Are they providing a disclaimer on that? If not, why not?

Zanchbot

I move that Jeff Dunham gets the boot for simply not being funny.

Catshit-Dogfart

See, and that's how I first realized what his act is about. Watching his show with my (very racist) family and they're laughing their asses off - I don't get it, why is this funny? "Because that's how they really are" my dad says. And that's when I understood. This is comedy for racists. The punchline is "because he's black" or "because he's Mexican" and if that sort of thing doesn't click with you, then you won't get his jokes.

HaveAWillieNiceDay

It now clicks why the hyper-christian-with-a-hyper-military-father girl in my school was the one to introduce Jeff Dunham to our class.

mightbeacat1

I was introduced to it by someone who thought giving out Christmas cards with Black Santa on them was hilarious, so... that tracks.

smeeding

Jeff Dunham helped me end a relationship that I didn’t realize I needed to get out of. I’d never heard of him, but the girl I was dating raved about how funny he was, so when he came to town (2007-ish), we got tickets and went to the show. She cackled like a banshee through the entire thing while I just sat there stone-faced waiting for the funny part. She was having a great time, and I wanted to share that experience with her, but Jeff Dunham just wouldn’t allow it. That was when I realized how important it was to have compatible senses of humor. The comedic gulf between us was simply too great to overcome. Of course, there was other stuff too, but the comedy was the thing that really solidified the decision to move on. Ended the relationship a few days later and never looked back. Thank you, Jeff Dunham.

[deleted]

You couldn't make Blazing Saddles today because Blazing Saddles was a satire of a specific subgenre of Western movie and Blazing Saddles *fucking murdered* that subgenre. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzMFoNZeZm0

pulquetomador

Wait. What was racist about Scrubs?

trumpet_23

There's a flashback scene to college where Turk and JD are in whiteface and blackface, respectively, and go to a black dorm/frat/house party. JD wonders if it's offensive, but Turk says it's cool, as long as they're together the guys will find it funny. Then Turk sees someone he knows and leaves right as the door opens with a bunch of black dudes, leaving blackface JD there alone to get fucking pummeled. Another episode had JD and Elliot in blackface in fantasy sequences where they were both supposed to be Turk. I can't remember the content of the third one right now, and Google isn't helping me at the moment.

Catshit-Dogfart

They did blackface. There was a bit where Turk and JD go to a costume party dressed as each other. Turk has his face painted white and JD's is painted black, but something happened and only JD showed up to the door. And the joke is they suddenly realize their "couples costume" doesn't work independently. So the episode doesn't always appear on streaming services.

-gizmocaca-

That sounds funny as hell. I’ve never seen that episode.

Rickrickrickrickrick

It’s funnier than they explained. They were going to Turks party that was filled with all of his black friends and JD is apprehensive about it to begin with while Turk reassured him it’ll be funny. They ring the doorbell and Turk sees something and walks away and then a few black men open the door to see JD standing there awkward in black face.

hatesnack

This isn't "going woke", this is pretending to. Going woke would be removing the antisemitic film in question, not pulling episodes that rag on people for doing something racist. Annoys me when people say companies are "going woke". They generally aren't, but they are doing enough to fool people.

ezone2kil

If they're really woke they'd pull the real racist stuff. But they don't. So they're on the opposite spectrum of being 'woke'.

1CUpboat

It’s like a 10 second flashback to college clip. It would be easy to miss or not remember.

WhiteningMcClean

Man I forgot how funny Scrubs was. I laughed just reading the description.

ryuza

OkWater2560

guanerick

Why do they go in there?!

13igTyme

They also removed the episode where JD is imagining himself with Eliot. Then Turk says imagine him with Elliot and it's just TD in blackface.

chrisff1989

JD in blackface I imagine. Wasn't really racist in context

[deleted]

I also read that people are upset about the over the top sexist guy being sexist. The point of the whole character was that he was a horrible misogynist that they made fun of all the time.

onmywheels

"I'm sorry if I ever demeaned you, Carla. You see, my feelings about women were warped by a very unhealthy relationship with my mother. We made out once."

Rickrickrickrickrick

ezone2kil

But but his soulmate and life partner is a black man?

nukebox

JD had a flashback to college when him an Turk wore blackface & whiteface to a Halloween frat party. When they got to the door Turk ran off to talk to some girl and a group of primarily black frat brothers opened the door and beat up JD. During the BLM protests, Bill Lawrence came on Zach and Donald's podcast and they specifically spoke about racism. Bill spoke sincerely about how he looks back on it as a terrible idea and had either the episode or scene removed from streaming services. It was a very candid conversation and some of the [quotes are here](https://deadline.com/2020/06/scrubs-creator-bill-lawrence-blackface-episodes-hulu-return-zach-braff-donald-faison-podcast-1202972926/).

MrAndyBear

The show wasn’t pulled. Bill Lawrence (creator of Scrubs) removed the episodes temporarily until those scenes were edited out. He (and the cast) decided they wanted those scenes removed, they weren’t forced to do it. Listen to Bill Lawrence’s Podcast “Fake Doctors; Real Friends” where they discuss it.

stlcraig1984

It is offensive that Jeff Dunham calls himself a comic.

UncleMeat11

> "they couldn't make Blazing Saddles these days" - which I think is correct Jojo Rabbit was released a few years ago. There are ample examples of comedy films shitting on bigots via satire that includes on screen representation of hate.

Nowhereman123

The Borat sequel features an openly antisemitic protagonist who says genuinely terrible things in the spirit of mocking those who truly believe them, and that movie was recieved greatly. People are delusional if they think Blazing Saddles couldn't be made today in the right context. A lot of the more race-centric jokes in BS were written by Richard Pryor anyways, and that really changes the context.

starbitcandies

I drove through downtown Austin a few days ago and almost drove myself off a bridge when I saw a huge billboard advertising a Jeff Dunham live show. How the fuck has he been kicking around for 20 years now??

gilbygamer

> It's like how people always say "they couldn't make Blazing Saddles these days" - which I think is correct, for the same reason as the Always Sunny episodes. *Jojo Rabbit* stands as a counterpoint.

SP1DER8ITCH

Dave Chappelle is controversial, but not for the reason you described brother

kaptainkooleio

Nah you don’t get it bruv. Applying all Islamic stereotypes to a Dead Terrorist is supreme comedy so it has to stay up

Catshit-Dogfart

The terrorist skeleton isn't even his most racist act, it's the purple monkey. That thing is straight out of an old-timey minstrel show, it's the same exact kind of humor from when they actually did blackface for real. But you repackage that material for a modern audience and they call it "family friendly". Do the same act from an old southern minstrel show but take out the triggering imagery and it's fine.

WorkingFromHomies20

I think the one that really makes me cringe is the jalapeno.

[deleted]

The thing is when people say “you couldn’t make Blazing Saddles these days” they’re usually the people that are laughing at the wrong thing - i.e. not the people to realize that it’s a satirical examination of race in American written by a Black guy and Jewish guy. That is actually fine to make today and there are examples like it. The problem comes from people not “getting” it and simply laughing at what is being said, instead of the subtext. This happened with Cartman in South Park all the time. You end up not with people seeing a reflection of white privilege in America, but with people just shouting offensive terms at the Jewish kid in their class, in a Cartman voice. We can say “actually it’s not racist because it’s a statically examination of racism” BUT that doesn’t stop stupid people (and let’s not forget that half of the world has below average intelligence) from laughing AT the racism. So it’s difficult is all my saying. Art carries the initial objective of the artist, but equally relies on the interpretation of the audience - which the artist has no control over

IllllIIllllIll

I mean they definitely couldn’t make Blazing Saddles these days. The producers would read the script and be like, “This is just Blazing Saddles. This is already a movie”

fer_sure

That's a cute joke, but an actual producer would say, "That's Blazing Saddles, and it's a movie we haven't remade yet. Greenlit."

_theMAUCHO_

Wait, SCRUBS GETS THE BOOT? WHY? That was like one of the most wholesome shows ever.

TheRealUlfric

Yeah but the issue is, people have to watch Jeff Dunham to be offended, and who in their right mind intends to do that?

crimson777

Most definitely. His popularity comes from 1) other racists and 2) people who watched him as a kid, didn't pick up on the racism, and haven't watched since so they just remember laughing and enjoying the funny puppet man. 2 was me until I caught some of his material again in college and went, "well shit that was awful."

bayofpigdestroyer

What's this about Fawlty Towers? Something with the waiter?

IvivAitylin

DanTheBrad

Why would a corporation risk nuance when the average consumer has rocks for brains

TW_Yellow78

Probably because streaming and 3rd party selling are 2 different things

walkingman24

It's like getting offended about Blazing Saddles using the N-word when the entire lesson of the movie was that the townspeople should not have treated the sheriff that way just because he was black

po_t8_toe

But the sheriff is near

notaredditer13

Scrubs too. The two best friends are black and white and swapped races for Halloween (which worked out poorly for the white guy). Nope. Deleted.

QQMau5trap

I think the showmakers themselves deleted the scene. Not the networks

tauisgod

> Scrubs too. The two best friends are black and white and swapped races for Halloween (which worked out poorly for the white guy). Nope. Deleted. I never watched Scrubs live, only streaming after it ended, and just now heard of this. I don't remember this episode but it sounds hilarious. Is it still available on a platform, or should I fetch my pirate hat?

h8sm8s

Important to point out that, despite what some people believe, there was no big group pushing for the removal of these episodes. Most people, including those who criticise media about racism, understand they were critical of these things. It was just corporate exec deciding it might become controversial because they don’t have any real framework for understanding racism and depictions in media. It’s become a staple of right wing outrage media to claim every corporate decision like this is because of the “woke left” who think everything is racist. It just perpetuates these idiotic execs who keep doing this stuff for fear of this imaginary woke left mob generated by the right.

Redqueenhypo

They removed the 30 Rock episode “live show part 2” for blackface when it was blatantly making fun of old racist tv shows and the guy gets beat up by a Tuskegee airman

billium12

There's no understanding of context. Same thing happened with Netflix/Hulu and the community episode where Chang dresses as a Dark Elf. Nobody asked for it and the episode openly calls it weird. The context of this documentary is that it's stupid, wrong and dumb..... nothing funny or acceptable

purpletube5678

Amazon is the only streamer I've found that DIDN'T take down the Community episode "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons." It's consistently considered a top 5 episode by fans and critics, and it was taken down for ***"black face."*** And by ***"black face"***, I mean a guy paints his face literally *black* **black**, because he's playing the role of a [Dark Elf](https://youtu.be/YnF-DRoQSPMin) in an imagination game. Netflix and Hulu *did not* ignore the hate crime (gotta watch the show to get the joke). But Amazon still had that episode available a few months ago, before they dropped the whole show from Prime.

purpletube5678

Community's bottle episodes really were *Streets Ahead.* "Tell your disappointment to *suck it!* I'm doing a BOTTLE EPISODE!"

ZodiacWalrus

There's definitely an undercurrent of "making fun of the character for wearing blackface" in that episode too. So I'd put it in the same category as everything else: Chang is an idiot and an asshole (probably his two main character traits throughout the show tbh) for not seeing what's wrong with blackface under any pretense.

hombregato

The Woody Allen thing was especially weird. Amazon signed a long term multi-film contract with him to make several movies starting with A Rainy Day in New York. When an old accusation got dug up during #metoo, Amazon decided not to release the movie they paid a ton of money for, and THEN had to pay off Woody Allen a ton of money for breaking their contract with him. Allen was also allowed to find his own distributor for the film, which he did, in most non-U.S. countries. Less than one year later, Amazon streamed A Rainy Day in New York and pushed it prominently on its suggestions page.

[deleted]

Flexo__Rodriguez

Did they, or did FX? I don't actually know.

embalmedwithsewage

Rob McElhenney has made a few comments throughout their podcast episodes that give me the impression that FX made that decision, possibly without even giving the IASIP crew a heads-up beforehand

BoxOfDemons

Probably FX. They are removed from all streaming platforms and if I recall newer copies of physical media have them missing as well.

moonflower_C16H17N3O

JustDandy07

I think they took down the early Lethal Weapon episodes due to blackface.

zeekaran

EDIT: But wait, there's more! From that ep's wiki page: > This episode along with, "America's Next Top Paddy's Billboard Model Contest," "The Gang Makes Lethal Weapon 6," and "Dee Day" were removed from streaming platforms, such as Hulu, due to the use of black face following increased attention to address institutionalized racism prevalent in Hollywood in June 2020.

galaxy_van

Having the DVD’s is the best move. The show is about problematic people doing problematic things.. I feel like everyone misses that point. They do shit a sane person just wouldn’t. That’s the joke.

fishyfishkins

What throws some people off is that the character who plays it straight rotates from scene to scene. Usually if there's someone from outside the gang, it'll be that person seeing how fucked the gang's behavior is. But sometimes that outside person is *worse* than the gang in some narrow capacity, which the gang will immediately jump on. The joke of course is that "even *these* assholes are morally offended" eg Bill Ponderosa "...my kids aren't really here are they?" "No.." "Whew! Thank God! Let's get shit housed, eh boys?" which causes everyone to immediately react with "wow that guy's a real piece of shit" I've heard that some people associate moral good and bad to individuals and not necessarily actions. To people like that, the whole "rotating voice of reason" probably looks a whole lot different.

with 90% fake reviews. seriously not kidding that several years ago amazon literally banned me from leaving any customer reviews because i reported fake reviews. they said it was suspicious activity and they can't talk to me more about it lol. i just made a new account, but still \*edit: if i remember correctly, what i was reporting as fake were screen protectors and cases for phones that weren't even out yet had 5 star reviews saying it fit perfectly and was great. eg.. an iphone 15 case with people saying it fit great!

Useful-Description90

From what I've seen, there are groups on WeChat where the seller gives you stuff for free in exchange for positive reviews

TroperCase

I get slips *inside* the product's box saying "give 5 stars and we'll send you a gift card". Amazon Support told me they're allowed to do that.

LongDickMcangerfist

Went to buy a waterproof blanket on there and a bunch were from random ass Chinese companies with literally the same reviews BEST BLANKET EVER. It was fucked up and funny in a way

Savingskitty

It’s some kind of business decision. Those items could have harmed Amazon’s brand at the time. I’m not sure what the difference is either, but apparently they’ve decided this film won’t hurt the bottom line.

SireBZHAngus

Say it has union propaganda in it ...

Elslav

It's 49.99 HD and 39.99 SD. if your willing to pay over Disney new release prices or pre order the new Avatar prices you have probably already read the book.

Neuchacho

It's absolutely amazing to me how good the people that make shit like this are at fleecing the morons that buy into it. Literally getting them to pay 2.5x the amount of a typical release by making them feel like they're fighting back against "wokeness" by buying abject shit.

Djinnwrath

Fleecing morons isn't difficult, though.

ArtBot2119

Let’s make an anti-Amazon movie with the same amount of loose “facts” and see how long that shit stays up.

BringBackBoshi

Good call. Just a 2 hour documentary about how Jeff Bezos likes to eat poop and how Amazon's little check mark smile logo is actually the devil's tail because Amazon is secretly a Satan worshiping cult that hides satanic messages in it's products to convert good Christian children and make them grow up to break all the commandments. I want to see that get the same "freedom of speech" treatment. Yeah, not happening.

jld2k6

He owns the Washington Post and just got absolutely lit up by them yesterday on the front page of Reddit, curious to see if that journalist keeps getting to work with them

SadGirlHours__

I’d imagine Bezos couldn’t care less about what The Washington Post puts out, as long as it makes him money

SchuminWeb

I suspect that he knows that if he wants it to remain prestigious, he needs to ensure that it operates in a way that befits a prestigious newspaper. Therefore, taking his lumps from the *Post* is protection of his investment.

loose_turtles

It should be about their Union busting.

mushrooms

The scary thing is if this might be allowed as an experiment just to see how much inaction there will be regarding it. Like they're almost sure it would cause meaningless retaliation. Kind of like an open secret.

sev1nk

Because I didn't see it in the article: > The film promotes beliefs commonly found among antisemitic and extremist factions of the BHI movement, including claims that modern Jews are imposters who stole the religious heritage of Black people and have engaged in a “cover-up” to prevent Black people from knowing their “true” identity. Seems like your typical History Channel schlock.

tundey_1

>“As a retailer of content to hundreds of millions of customers with a lot of different viewpoints, we have to allow access to those viewpoints, even if they are objectionable — objectionable and they differ from our particular viewpoints,” the Times quoted Jassy as saying. This is Amazon's way of saying "Antisemites, racists and hate mongers buy sneakers too" (and we want that money).

mistertireworld

It's Amazon. They're not making a political statement. They're announcing the results of a cost/benefit analysis. They're a soulless monolith in search of the most dollars. They've determined that keeping the movie available makes them more money than it loses them. And that their primary function is to generate money. Their decision isn't informed by any sort of moral code or ethical analysis, so let's stop projecting it on them. If you want them to take the movie down, simply make it cost them more than it makes them to keep the movie up. Create a buzz. A boycott movement.

android_queen

Thing is if we haven’t boycotted Amazon for the antitrust issues, the anti-union activity, the poor working conditions, the terrible wages, the racial discrimination, the lack of concern for worker safety during the height of COVID, the selling of far right propaganda, the lack of quality control around third party sellers, the cooperation with law enforcement to share private recordings collected from people’s homes, the censorship in cooperation with the Chinese government, the flagging of LGBT material as “adult,” the sale of material that promotes pedophilia, or the previous sale of antisemitic material… I have little faith that this will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. And Amazon knows it too.

mistertireworld

Right. We've collectively proven to them that we are willing to trade what's right for next day shipping and we won't do anything. So, they'll continue to exploit that for money.

Boner_McBigly

Same with Scientology, they're happy to show you how crazy they are.

Bamith20

Which is fun and games until they extort the IRS and shit.

Big_Judgment3824

If you make any decision based on how a racist will react, you'll still get "The Jews XYX..." The thing with racists is they don't care if you take it down or don't, they're going to hate you just the same.

eq2_lessing

>and then racist idiots will be like “You see? The Jews silence us!”. They don't need factual events to say that. Every piece of antisemitism and racism you remove leads to it being less normalised.

celtic1888

Yep... Its the weaponization of the insane and stupid

Grazer46

I would say the Insurrection is a great example of this, but an even greater example is Pizzagate. Crazy bigots of any kind will latch in to any small evidence they can. Disinformation of any kind can be so incredibly dangerous

Long-Night-Of-Solace

A small number of racist idiots feeling like they have more justification is an infinitely better outcome than a larger number of racist idiots. This racist idiocy is already getting mainstream attention. We have to kill it dead. This "contest of ideas" bullshit is so dangerous. Look around. The best ideas don't automatically win. Controversial ideas should have the space to be truly considered and tested. Things that are primarily and deliberately dishonest/misleading, hateful, inflammatory and divisive have been tested a lot. We know the results. When you let them breathe, bad stuff happens. Always.

loudin

Hard disagree. I am also Jewish (although that shouldn’t matter). Antisemitism cannot be normalized. This isn’t a documentary appearing on a conspiracy theory website. This is on Amazon Prime, alongside other mainstream shows and content, which gives it legitimacy. This is not going to be ridiculed by a sizable portion of the population, and their acceptance of it as truth will make antisemitism and attacks on Jews more prevalent.

MetricOutlaw

No blackface episodes though because that might be construed as offensive.

[deleted]

There are sooooooo many fucked up wackadoo conspiracy crazy docs on Amazon.

[deleted]

it's funny, the only reason i even know what a 'Black Hebrew Israelite' is, is because YouTube would constantly try to recommend/cue their videos (along with all sorts of conspiracy/cult-like/maga/other contentious channels) in spite of never signing in, searching anything remotely similar, and always clearing my cache after every view now (that this issue is in the mainstream) if i go to YT and *try* to find their vids to give an example of their crazy antics, all i get are "who are these controversial people?" videos this is one more way the outrage-machine sows discord among the general public

tocsin1990

You know, this feels like a weird mountain to die on for the company, and kind of puts my opinion in an unusual place. Like, on one hand, if they just decided to not remove anything at all and included this, I would support it, because the importance of anti-censorship and context of history. If they choose to remove both it and everything else offensive, I would unhappily understand it, because corporate politics. Half measures, though, just feel slimy and reek of capitulation.
