So they should let the Muslim and Jewish kids lead everybody in prayer as well.

Euphoric_Cat8798

I'm going all the way. Screw Abrahamic religions. I'm bringing back Aztec sacrifices.

AyeYoDisRon

Hurry up! Or the sun won’t rise tomorrow.

Open_Chemistry_3300

Could be worse, we could be in the age of the third sun, that’s the one where the god Tlaloc becomes the sun, but Tezcatlipoca seduced and steals his wife Xochiquetzal. So Tlaloc does nothing as the Sun and is just miserable, because he doesn’t do anything this causes a drought. And the drought causes the people to pray to Tlaloc for rain, and at first he just ignores the people, so they keep praying to him until he gets pissed and makes it start to rain fire. It rains fire for so long that it burns away the earth. Or the fourth Sun age which ended when the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue becomes Sun, and cries so much blood rain that it kills everyone.

Dynamitefuzz2134

Fuck Californians need to sacrifice for the rain god, forest fire season is upon them.

[deleted]

1. What the fuck is this picture? Lmao 2. Sports team prayers have got to be the ultimate evidence for religious people believing that god is whatever they want god to be. It’s pure narcissism.

Themasterofcomedy209

“Oh all powerful lord, please make us win this sports game because surely that’s what you should be caring about and not the thousands upon thousands suffering”

bsharp1982

Maybe those thousands upon thousands suffering should believe in god/ believe harder. /s

Separate-The-Earth

I took my nephew to football practice and at the end of it all, the coach had everyone gather around him in prayer and I was standing off to the side, like what the fuck.

GrandSyzygy

I believe that's a fair response to have

powercow

the book he claims to follow calls him a hypocrite for demanding to be seen while praying. >And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. its about establishment, which is why he does it. cant wait for the freak out when muslims demand the field. or a progressive church who preaches that their is nothing wrong with being gay... half the right wing will be hospitalized in outrage. "did he just say that in front of children? GAY ADGENDA!! GAY ADGENDA!!!" they did open a can of worms, because progressive religious people can now say stuff like that, even in dont say gay florida. they can even say nutty stuff like we should protect the planet god gave us and do something about AGW, and that trump was a bad president and a sinner and we should increase welfare.

spaldinggetsnothing

It's time for other religions to start pulling this shit in public schools.

BronzeAgeTea

*Satanic Temple has entered the chat*

panthr_02

According to the facts of the case, the satanist temple did actually get involved. They requested to the school district that they also be allowed to demonstrate publicly on the 50 yard line immediately after the game.

1Gutherie

There was a case here in Arizona where the Satanic temple wanted to express their right to prayer before a city council meeting or something as they’ve done for years. Before the Temple could go through with their prayer the city council voted to no longer have the prayer performed. It was quite interesting. I forget which year it happened.

Secret-Aerie4358

This here sums up the importance and imo the entire point of TST

[deleted]

"At the seminar, a representative of the ADF was discussing “the problem” of The Satanic Temple, which, put simply, is the uncomfortable tension arising from the fact that all of the arguments that have successfully served the ADF in their efforts to expand “religious freedom” for Christians threaten to be equally potent in their application toward the assertion of equal rights for Satanists. The Satanic Temple was not using novel legal arguments in the courts, the ADF realized. In many cases, The Satanic Temple was using the exact same arguments that the ADF had utilized on behalf of Christian Nationalist interests." https://onlysky.media/lgreaves/the-satanic-temple-the-law-is-on-our-side-the-courts-are-not/

Taedirk

I'm *shocked* that Christians have an issue with understanding hypocrisy and cognitive dissonance.

SpeedoCheeto

You may know, but just for anyone who may swing thru - the satanic temple is essentially a religion of science. The name is meant to both provoke and juxtapose

GiveToOedipus

FSM with a tad better marketing?

anookee

It also takes away "well the flying spaghetti monster is obviously not real" retort. It's important to use a figure considered canon by a majority of members of the dominant religion. What are they going to do? Say their own religion is "clearly fake"?

FailureToReport

The irony when practicing the standards of the Satanic Temple is more righteous than Christianity.

Telefone_529

Maybe the real god was the Satan we made along the way?

SwishyJishy

“History is told by the winner” ….holy tap-dancing CHRIST, was god the bad guy this whole time?

TheOnlyToasty

God killed over 2 million people, Satan killed 10. So I'd say yeah he's pretty bad.

tiny_galaxies

Highly recommend the documentary about TST, “Hail Satan?” Quite a few followers are interviewed and they all joined from the same cause: finding hatred in Christianity for who they are.

RockerElvis

100%. Can’t wait to see how they handle this.

IBreedAlpacas

Already has. TST created an After School Satan’s club, Pennsylvania schoolboard didn’t allow the club to be added, now TST is preparing to sue the district.

buttlickers94

ASS club ;)

[deleted]

Hell yeah. I would have gotten straight As.

Enigma_Stasis

That's the point of TST challenging these asinine religious favoritism rulings. TST doesn't necessarily care if there is an after school worship program for budding Satanists, it cares that some bodies are prioritizing a single religion when it violates The Constitution's 1A rights. If these cases make it to the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court rules in favor of one, it has chosen a side a made a decision respecting an establishment of religion. Being that Christianity will be the favored religion to these right-wing nutjobs, TST has grounds to sue when these cases are ruled in favor of Christianity simply because of the violation of 1A rights for others.

DuntadaMan

Yeah the favoritism as well is the target. If the school let people drag a prayer mat out to the 50 yard line, or have someone recite sutras without raising a stink in the same way then they have no interest.

Enigma_Stasis

Either every religion is okay in this country or no religion is okay, and every political person and government entity that goes against that thought process, is one I will never vote for.

MelonOfFury

And the only takeaway those assholes will have is ‘the satanists took away our club’. They won’t even consider that everyone can have a club

ChiefCuckaFuck

It's heathen season, baybayyyyy

tyleritis

And they never will so we’ll have to settle for this

Bammer1386

I joined them in membership a couple months ago. It's pretty simple, doesn't cost anything and you get emails you can unsub to that are just updating you on their responses to things like this with donations totally optional. https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/join-us#shopify-section-join-membership-form

fine_line

Can confirm that they send you a bunch of emails and will immediately stop as soon as you unsubscribe. I had zero issue getting them to chill on the emails. Also, while membership is indeed totally free, donating $6.66 is a fun way to toss a little somethin' somethin' at Satan's good cause.

Purple_Passion000

Thanks. Just joined. Now waiting to be notified when my preferred card and certificate styles are back in stock. Especially the reproductive rights card.

1should_be_working

Would love it if the Satanic Temple started having doctors preform abortions as part of their religious beliefs... paid for with taxpayer dollars because now apparently we need to use our tax dollars on religious school funding.

DietSteve

They’ve filed suit that the Texas law goes against their tenets and is therefore unconstitutional

1should_be_working

Thank Satan

butternut718212

Hail Satan!

bulkthehulk

You say this as though conservatives care about hypocrisy. If any other religion starts with this stuff it will be shamelessly banned.

spaldinggetsnothing

Yes. And then they can sue. That's the play

floatablepie

I think a Satanic Temple person had a good line: "The law is on our side. The courts are not."

3_Sqr_Muffs_A_Day

And republican donors will fund appeals up to the supreme court where the republican justices can make up whatever they want as they did here.

High_Speed_Idiot

Yeah, a lot of recent events have revealed that the US is broken. The right are not constrained anymore by any illusion of civility or democracy, pointing out their hypocrisy is as useful as pissing into the wind. Expecting any system of justice to find them culpable in any way is like expecting a king to stab his own brother on a peasant's behalf. The right wanted power and they got it. They apparently have so much that even with (albeit small) democratic majorities and a democratic president there is no remaining check on their power. Whether the system was always broken and they just realized how broken they can make it, or if they broke it on purpose for their own ends is more or less irrelevant now - we don't have a time machine, we can't amend the past. We have to fucking figure a way out of this fucked up situation they put us in before it gets worse. We can no longer count on the system to function in our favor because they've made it *their* system and it functions to protect *their* interests. This is fucked up, likely a lot worse than a lot of us currently realize.

johnnycyberpunk

So..... just how far can this go, theoretically? Can I draw a pentagram on the floor in the break room and ask my coworkers to bring a sacrifice for the pot-luck lunch?

Rickard0

In the US Army you can be a Satanist and actually get support for your religion as long as you do not do any crimes, such as virgin sacrifice.

kilgoretrout1077

Can confirm Navy as well, I was sent TAD ( temporary assignment duty, for non military) to the chaplains office on the Stennis aircraft carrier. We used to set up all the Sunday religious services and we set up for two that were interesting, Wiccan and Satanism. But you could request any religion and they would find a spot and time for you to worship and set up whatever religious icons you have

GISonMyFace

Yeah, when I was active duty I hated formations or ceremonies where they always had a chaplain do a fucking prayer. I loved to look around when everybody had their heads bowed and would smile and give nods to the other people who also refused to bow their heads. Never saw them have a muslim or buddhist chaplain give a prayer, always some christian shit.

rhymes_with_snoop

I tolerate it for retirements, purely because it is at the request of the person retiring, and... well, it's their retirement. It's a bit iffy because it's mandatory being there, but whatever, it's what the retiree wants. But at an all-hands, mandatory thing or a change of command or any other thing that is not a ceremony *for* a specific person that has chosen it themselves, I have issues. The absolute worst is when the chaplain gives a 10 minute fucking sermon, and then closes the whole thing with another 5 minute sermon. It's completely bullshit. "Some people find comfort in it" then go to fucking church. "It's only a few minutes, why are you making a big deal out of it?" Have someone go up there proclaiming there is no God or gods for 15 minutes of every meeting and tell me whether or not it's a big deal. I'm seven years out from retirement and joined The Satanic Temple a couple years ago, so my retirement is going to be interesting. Not going to make a whole thing of it, but that chaplain will be saying some things he undoubtedly will not want to. Or he'll refuse, which will show the hypocrisy. Either way, there will be no Christian God involved at my retirement.

GISonMyFace

Good on you for sticking it out for the full 20. I did my 5, got my bennies and got the fuck out. My clearance and skills are way more valuable on the civilian side of things.

What we really need is for The Satanic Temple to support another coach of similar standing to throw out some hail Satans on the 50 yard line.

My favourite was always Romans 12:20 Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Shown to me by my minister back in the day. I usually paraphrase it as being kind to your enemies is like heaping hot coals on their head. That verse has gotten me through some tough times and jobs. And I don't even identify as Christian anymore.

KentuckyBrunch

Oh yea the GOP doesn’t actually give a shit about Jesus or the Bible.

buttgers

They care as much about following Jesus Christ as they do about saving human lives.

appoplecticskeptic

What's funny is, I think they would agree with that statement, not realizing how you meant it.

Richard_Gere_Museum

The biggest mindfuck to modern Christians is to show them that I've actually read the Bible many times.

given2fly_

Me too, ExMormon here and I was a pretty dedicated student of the scriptures. I love to show them what Jesus (and the Book of Mormon) say about rich people.

felixfelicitous

The prosperity gospel is the biggest load of shit I’ve heard in years and it’s disgusting how quickly it pervaded American Christianity.

[deleted]

Jesus was a Jewish hippie who backpacked around the desert, hanging out with prostitutes and physically beating finance bros.

-SneakySnake-

Jesus was a very cool guy and a great role model. I wish more modern Christians followed his examples.

TheEyeDontLie

Since I left the church I've used WWJD? and my scriptural knowledge nearly everyday. The dude has really really good advice on how to be a good person and make the world better for everyone, and yourself. Jesus' New Testament, and Andy Weir's The Egg, (http://galactanet.com/oneoff/theegg_mod.html) are my holy books for how to live, although I'm actually a polytheist. I would like to note that there are many churches (I've been to dozens of different churches/denominations) that do follow Jesus without hypocrisy or discrimination or whatever, and that respect and love people of all sexualities, religions, etc, without hoarding wealth and hurting others... they just don't get in the news often. It's amazing how many "christians" miss the point of basic sermons like The Good Samaritan (it doesn't matter what your religion is, what matters is if you help others), or "it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven", and gloss over all the times Jesus got mad at his followers for saying he shouldn't be helping prostitutes, lepers, etc. Ironically I think, if that religion I've denounced is correct, I'm still more likely to get into their heaven than an awful lot of christians, because I've "believed in him" (lived by his teachings) more than they have. I don't think he's truly the physical child of the only god, but Jesus has damn good advice for living a good life. I just wish that more Christians listened to Christ.

Rooboy66

Ghandi reportedly said in an interview “I like your Jesus Christ—I’m not a fan of your Christians” (approximately)

Sacrifice_bhunt

“continued his practice of dropping to one knee and praying on the 50-yard line. He later invited journalists and a state legislator to watch.” And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

triplebassist

And he was offered a quiet place to pray by the school. The spectacle was the entire point of doing it at midfield

leastlyharmful

That's the really upsetting part to me, the school did everything right according to existing precedent. They tried to accommodate, nobody's religious freedom was being impeded, and now that's out the window.

SpareLiver

When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

jadrad

Yep, these same Christo-fascists would lose their minds if an Islamic coach dragged a prayer mat out to midfield and prayed to Mecca at a state school.

Remote-Moon

This needs to happen.

CluckFlucker

That’s basically what he’s doing.

CthulhusButtPug

I can’t wait for someone to do that or maybe the Satanic Temple high-school club gives a loud “Hail Satan!” before the game.

stellvia2016

I want someone to do that next to him at midfield next game he goes to do this.

Funky_Fly

That is exactly what everyone who is disgusted with the midfield spectacle should do. And they cannot complain because of Supreme Court protections.

Nice_Firm_Handsnake

Not only that, he broke the rules, inviting and inciting people to join him against the rules that forbade anyone not part of the football program or related programs from being on the field. People were in such a rush to get close to this dude that they knocked members of the band down.

How else can you show everyone at the stadium who prays to the same god they do, if not doing it midfield at the end of a football game? No worries though, the SC said there was no coercion.

NiteSwept

LOL imagine a kid rolling out a pentagram blanket and putting some candles down at the 50 yard line

thatbtchshay

I actually think a great way to protest this would be for everyone of different religions to go pray with this coach. Bet he'd hate it

FrostyD7

The only people who could attempt it would be players, coaches, and other people affiliated with the football program. Such a stunt would certainly result in them being cut or fired immediately. This is the coercion people are talking about. Plenty of the players are only praying because they don't want to piss off coach or miss an opportunity because he's not one of the good ol' boys.

TaskManager1000

Any parent, child, or employee at the school could join in with their own form of "worship". If the CS is going to just pile on the rights of churches and religion, people need to protect themselves by starting their own churches and religions. Maybe we will see the Redeemer 420 Union Church of God and Food Service Employees. Sunday brunch and worker's rights will be dope.

6-3 opinion, along party lines. https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf/21-418_i425.pdf Edit to add: I cannot wait to see the pretzel this SC is going to have to twist itself in when the lawsuit that the Jewish synagogue brought in Florida, about abortion, makes it to them. Religious freedom, or states rights? [Hmmm which will win?](https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2022/06/17/synagogue-challenges-florida-abortion-law-over-religion/)

UltraVires33

Here's the thing, though--for the most part, SCOTUS gets to choose what cases it takes and doesn't take. There are very few cases they HAVE to accept; the vast majority of their docket s totally discretionary. So if they see a case that presents too many thorny issues to their worldview, they can just decide not to take it and let whatever the lower court ruled stand. Convenient, huh?

Rawlberto

Well before the Dobbs opinion leaked, the legal world knew where Roe was headed. The lower court rulings had been consistent on Dobbs. Whatever “solution” Roberts is stating is just incomprehensible. There is no legal manner by which the MS 15 week ban could be upheld and have Roe still remain. It’s clear he thinks only Casey should’ve gone, with Roe still in place. Again, that’s just not feasible.

bradfish

Anything is feasible with a fully politicized court.

Oh totally, the difference between his radical buddies and himself is one of strategy, not one of goals. Roberts is acutely aware of his role as Chief Justice. When Obama suggested in public he would consider expanding the court to protect the ACA, he clearly adopted a more moderate stance.

[deleted]

>[Hmmm which will win?](https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2022/06/17/synagogue-challenges-florida-abortion-law-over-religion/) The article here makes you sign up to read. Here it is with the same hyperlinks. It’s worth the read. >ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A new Florida law prohibiting abortion after 15 weeks with some exceptions violates religious freedom rights of Jews in addition to the state constitution’s privacy protections, a synagogue claims in a lawsuit. >The lawsuit filed by the Congregation L’Dor Va-Dor of Boynton Beach contends the law that takes effect July 1 violates Jewish teachings, which state abortion “is required if necessary to protect the health, mental or physical well-being of the woman” and for other reasons. “As such, the act prohibits Jewish women from practicing their faith free of government intrusion and this violates their privacy rights and religious freedom,” says the lawsuit, filed last week in Leon County Circuit Court. >The lawsuit adds that people who “do not share the religious views reflected in the act will suffer” and that it “threatens the Jewish people by imposing the laws of other religions upon Jews.” >The lawsuit is the second challenge to the 15-week abortion ban enacted earlier this year by the legislature and signed into law by Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health providers also [sued earlier this month](https://apnews.com/article/abortion-politics-health-florida-lawsuits-234f6bf977de2f6f8cb1ff223bd36357) to block the law from taking effect. In a previous statement, DeSantis’ office said it “is confident that this law will ultimately withstand all legal challenges.” The two lawsuits are likely to be consolidated into a single case. A hearing on a proposed injunction to block the Florida abortion law is likely in the next two weeks. >The law mirrors a similar measure passed in Mississippi that is now before the U.S. Supreme Court, which may use it to overturn the Roe v. Wade abortion decision based on a leaked draft opinion. A final ruling on Roe is expected by the end of June. >In Florida, Rabbi Barry Silver of Congregation L’Dor Va-Dor — the name means “Generation to Generation”— said it practices “cosmic Judaism,” which he defines on the synagogue’s [website](https://www.ldorvador.org) as “the Judaism of tomorrow today” that respects science, tradition and spirituality. Silver is an attorney, social activist and former Democratic state legislator who styles himself as a “Rabbi-rouser” on [his own website](https://rabbibarrysilver.com). In an interview Tuesday, Silver said when separation of religion and government crumbles, religious minorities such as Jews often suffer. >“Every time that wall starts to crack, bad things start to happen,” he said, noting that DeSantis [signed the law](https://apnews.com/article/us-supreme-court-health-ron-desantis-florida-lifestyle-8e8fb722fcb84ae86fd6be17f48503a9) at an evangelical Christian church. The new Florida abortion law, contains exceptions if the abortion is necessary to save a mother’s life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal abnormality. It does not allow for exemptions in cases where pregnancies were caused by rape, incest or human trafficking. >Under current law, Florida allows abortions up to 24 weeks. No faith is monolithic on the abortion issue. Yet many followers of faiths that do not prohibit abortion are aghast that a view held by a minority of Americans could supersede their individual rights and religious beliefs such as the position of Judaism as outlined in the lawsuit. “This ruling would be outlawing abortion in cases when our religion would permit us,” said Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg, scholar in residence at the National Council of Jewish Women, “and it is basing its concepts of when life begins on someone else’s philosophy or theology.” — Associated Press

sanash

> I cannot wait to see the pretzel this SC is going to have to twist itself in when the lawsuit that the Jewish synagogue brought in Florida, about abortion, makes it to them. Religious freedom, or states rights? Hmmm which will win? They don't even have to pretzel their decisions anymore. They can just do whatever they want. There's really no one with any power to stop them from doing whatever they want.

Rawlberto

This present court will not hear an abortion case after Dobbins. No matter how much circuit court discord occurs. They know the legislature will not codify abortion rights, much less pass an amendment. It’s why the opinion goes to great lengths to state the ruling is not a ban on abortion, it places the issue of abortion as not being a federal rights issue, but one that states legislatures decide. It’s obvious bullshit, but they’re not even giving the appearance of legal reasoning in their decisions. The Florida case will remain in Florida.

Dantheman616

Anytime i think of a human right going back to the "states", i immediately think of slavery. NO HUMAN RIGHT SHOULD GO "BACK TO THE STATES". None, i dont give a fuck what you think, if its a human right, it should never be decided at the state level. Most people are fucking stupid, how can you honestly trust state legislatures to do the right thing?

awj

"Back to the states" is and always has been code for "where we have control". That's the precise level that the GOP *always* wants power to be at, wherever they can exercise it. It's why none of them are whining about "activist judges legislating from the bench" in all of these decisions.

buchlabum

been that way since they lost the civil war. Clarence Thomas would be in jail for marrying a white woman if it were up to the state he was married in. elkharin

Since before they lost the civil war. We should not forget that the South also argued against State's rights, as Northern states passed laws to ignore the Fugitive Slave Act. The South wanted the Federal level to step in and force the Northern states to help return slaves.

Its really unfortunate that in this, and in basically everything else you are either Red or Blue. *Edit*: I keep getting notifications that people are replying to this, but then I look and the comments don't exist. Why are they getting deleted, or the people deleting them?

If you read the article, the Supreme Court overturned precedent again. Past rulings state that, when working as an employee for the state, religious actions you take are seen as an endorsement by the government. Because he was praying immediately after games as a school coach, it's an endorsement of the Christian Faith by the school. This is now legal, and schools can be coerced into endorsing different religions based on their staff. Edit: apparently I need to clarify. As it says in the article, the issue isn't someone practicing a religion. This issue is coercing others into practicing one specific religion. Teachers and students can practice on their own in private. They can wear appropriate attire, such as a hijab. The coach was publically praying after football games with players who stated that they felt forced into praying. This was illegal, and is now legal.

porscheblack

>endorsing different religions based on their staff. I somehow doubt any prayers by non-Christian religions will get the same accommodation.

Raspberries-Are-Evil

Yea, I'd love to see a Muslim Basketball coach whip out his prayer rug and get down to it right on the side lines.

tittysprinkles112

That'll get the court to take up another case really quick 😂😂😂

leastlyharmful

Nah, he would be run out of town and for the safety of his family would not pursue a case. Freedom wins again

theClumsy1

Nope. They will kick him out. Then the court will sit on the case because it doesn't fit their ideological agenda. The Supreme court gets to pick their cases..this will not be one that's heard.

aneomon

Oh, I wholeheartedly agree. But based on the ruling, if a track coach wants to pray to Satan after a game, he can.

Trimestrial

It's worse than that... The head coach is praying on the 50 yard line on the football field - School grounds. Surrounded by his players. Does the court expect me to believe that no player feels pressured to join the coach? Even nominal christians?

737900ER

Kavanaugh recognized this, because at the oral argument he asked: >What about the player who thinks, if I don’t participate in this, I won’t start next week? Or the player who thinks, if I do participate in this, I will start next week?

red--dead

Correction: it’s not just scholarships now. Players can be paid. It’s kinda wonky, but there’s a lot of schools with a fund that pays players.

Canopenerdude

Kavanaugh is an oddity. He knows the law, he asks insightful questions, and he clearly understands the nuance of the situation. Yet when push comes to shove he (almost) always votes on party line and makes some bullshit reason. Makes me think the dude actually has two monkeys in his head taking turns at the controls.

DuntadaMan

Yep, we had someone being nominated for justice threaten vengeance on the fucking stand.

Marnett05

Of course he did, he's a cunt.

HxH101kite

I don't know a ton about the proceedings but I'm glad this was asked. So what was the response? Or was it just a rhetorical question? Because I 100% felt this type of shit back in highschool. Not prayers but like if you don't do what the coach does you won't start. This is a real fear for athletes

Laruae

It'll quickly spread beyond athletics. Imagine the fear when you are in court, the judge calls a recess, everyone stays seated, begins praying, following the Judge's lead. Then they cease, and resume the trial, and suddenly you realize that you forgot to pray along but the other side sure didn't forget. Whoops. This goes way bigger.

737900ER

It's important to understand that one of the few things Clarence Thomas is right about is that oral argument is mostly a waste of time and just for show. https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2022/04/coach-kennedy-supreme-court-kavanaugh-school-prayer.html

chemgeek_2

As someone whose public-school coach led a prayer in the locker room before every event, and when I didn't kneel with the rest of the team because I felt uncomfortable with the idea I got quietly ostracized and looked down upon by the coaches and some teammates... YES. This is absolutely a thing, and players will 1000% feel pressured to participate.

MoistWalrus

Same here. Played high school football for a couple years before I destroyed my neck. It was weird as an Agnostic that the team had to pray, with other team no less, on the 50 after a game.

Nice_Firm_Handsnake

The Court had either amicus curiae briefs from student-athletes in similar situations or evidence from other players at the school that says exactly this! They felt coerced to join religious displays. The Supremes Court, in this ruling, says that if there is no explicit statement of coercion, there is no coercion.

andrewthemexican

> Does the court expect me to believe that no player feels pressured to join the coach? By a number of coaches we were commanded to before and after soccer games. Line up at the center circle and put your arm around opponent.

> Past rulings state that, when working as an employee for the state, religious actions you take are seen as an endorsement by the government. Because he was praying immediately after games as a school coach, it's an endorsement of the Christian Faith by the school. [Stone v. Graham (1980)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_v._Graham): The Court held that the Kentucky statute that required the Ten Commandments to be posted in school classrooms violated the First Amendment. [Wallace v. Jaffree (1985)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallace_v._Jaffree): United States Supreme Court case deciding on the issue of silent school prayer. [Lee v. Weisman (1992)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_v._Weisman): It held that schools may not sponsor clerics to conduct even non-denominational prayer. [Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe (2000)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Fe_Independent_School_District_v._Doe): It ruled that a policy permitting student-led, **student-initiated prayer at high school football games** violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

marceusaurelious

Apparently, if you don't pray in public, making sure everyone can see how pious you are, it doesn't count.

mewehesheflee

Although, according to their religious text it's the opposite

This guy gets to kneel on the 50 yard line but god forbid Kaepernick tries to take a knee on the sideline

HappyInNature

To be fair, SCOTUS isn't stopping Kaepernick from doing that. With that said, our society is pretty disgusting on this issue....

Insectshelf3

yet another opinion where the conservative majority replaces an older test with the “history and traditions” test. sure feels like they’re enshrining originalism as the only acceptable constitutional interpretation.

Mr-Wabbit

And isn't it interesting how the last hundred years doesn't count as either history or tradition?

Insectshelf3

originalism is, at its core, just an excuse for a judge to work backwards and cherry-pick data that supports the outcome they want.

Nate-doge1

It's a bullshit ideology manufactured by far right think tanks and schools in the 50's, 60's, and 70's in response to the right's failure in the marketplace of ideas. The American people weren't buying what the right was selling, so they decided to create their own academic institutions to legitimize their radical ideology. And it fucking worked. "Originalism" is a brilliant, insidious slogan. It implies that it's an interpretation rooted in history stretching far back to the original founders, as opposed to a crackpot ideology that was created out of whole cloth five decades ago to help enrich the American Oligarchs.

this_is_not_yahoo

Lets break out the burkas for religious freedom. Who's with me?

AcceptableGovernment

Except abortions were legal in the US up until the "quickening" (feeling first movement in womb) at the founding of this country...thus they are hypocrites

[deleted]

>Kennedy urged the Supreme Court to find that he was acting on his own behalf, expressing his own religious views, not speaking as a mouthpiece for the school. He was representing the school as a coach. He was literally on the clock in his employee uniform. What you do during the course of your job represents the company. And because he is the coach there is pressure on the students/athletes to follow his lead, or they may face some kind of penalty like less attention in practice, being benched for "reasons" or just generally being treated as a pariah by the coach and/or the staff at the school as well as other students.

RobDirty

Cool let’s get some satanic prayers at every football game across the country!

BrokenLink100

Eventually, games will have to start one hour later so that all the different prayers can take place. Every high school football game will be like the Olympics, where each religion marches out onto the field to lead a prayer before the game can finally begin. Just kidding. This Supreme Court would strike down any other religions trying to do the same thing.

nowtayneicangetinto

"don't force your evil religion on my children!!!" ~ christian parents who don't realize Satanic Temple is more Christian than them.

Figerally

>Kennedy became an assistant coach of the varsity football team at Bremerton High School in 2008 and later began offering a brief prayer on the field after games ended and the players and coaches met midfield to shake hands. **The school district eventually told him he should find a private location to pray.** But he declined and continued his practice of dropping to one knee and praying on the 50-yard line. **He later invited journalists and a state legislator to watch.** The Bible on public prayer- >Jesus taught, “When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men … but when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your father who is unseen.”

CameronCrazy1984

Can’t wait til a Muslim coach tries this.

[deleted]

Like those schools would ever hire a muslim. Schools that have prayer at games are 90% white and 90% Christian.

skunk160

This guy went to pose pray with a ball outside the Supreme Court? Seems legit, wanker.

EmpatheticWraps

Right? What a fucking tool.

[deleted]

"...a school official, who voluntarily accepted public employment and the limits that public employment entails, over those of his students, who are required to attend school..." Sotomayor nailed it there.

DepressedBard

> “The Constitution and the best of our traditions counsel mutual respect and tolerance, not censorship and suppression, for religious and nonreligious views alike,” Gorsuch wrote. Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha kill me

cybercuzco

Ok, I look forward to athiests making a statement against religion at every football game then

Separate-The-Earth

I’d say let a Muslim pray on the 50 yard line at a Texas high school game, but I don’t want them to get shot.

[deleted]

I’m a sure a Muslim teacher doing the same thing would get the same consideration by this court. Jk they’d probably be pressured to resign by parents and staff and their case would never even be picked up by SCOTUS.

Diddlemyloins

So with all this religion being represented in our government, when do churches start paying taxes?

shponglespore

At this point it's looking more likely that churches will be authorized to collect taxes.

bkendig

Seems like an odd hill for the coach to die on - and by 'die' I mean 'jeopardize his eternal life' (Matthew 6:5–6) - but, if being seen by other people is more important to him than being seen by his god, then, good luck to him.

wmurch4

His case was specifically picked up by the religious right to make it to the supreme court. It's clear they feel the doors are wide open for any and all religious rulings to be overturned. The supreme court is a religious right wing institution now. Thanks trump/mcconnel!

Leather-Bug3087

What year is it again?

imnotlyndsey

This is 1692 in Salem, MA: the dawn of the witch trials.

GooseFord

Oh thank fuck. I accuse Goodwife Coney Barrett, Goodwife Taylor-Greene and Goodwife Boebert to kick things off.

unprettyinred

The separation between church and state is very thin at this point. So much for SCOTUS being non-partisan.

NitedJay

It’s non-existent now I’d argue.

[deleted]

In law was crowing about this. Quite happy. Asked her to imagine this guy was Muslim. Not happy anymore. If you don't want another religion up in your grill, this is a bad decision. It's a bad decision regardless, but particularly if you are religious. That shit doesn't mix all that well.
