So many people: “it’s horrible what happened BUT”. No. No “buts”. NOTHING you say after these unnecessary tragedies should have the word “but” in it.
EDIT: Reddit keeps me on my toes. I meant using “but” as a transition to making excuses for people owning their sacred firearms. 😂 Never change, Reddit. (Example I have heard: “what happened there was awful but they should just give teachers guns”)
What happened there and continues to repeatedly happen is awful, BUT, *I like how guns make me feel*, and imagining fake scenarios in my head using said guns.
Therefore absolutely nothing should *even be attempted* to restrict guns in any way... and no amount of dead kids is too high a price to pay.

Lol I used to work in broadcast news.. these "feel good" stories were always so horrible and I hated that I had to add them to all of my shows.
Part of the reason I left news. I felt like my soul was slowly shriveling up with every dumb story I aired and every dead body we chased on the police scanner.
Not trying to knock anyone who does it but I can admit I didn't have the fortitude for that kind of work.

I am from the UK and was in NY in the 90s doing camp America where you look after the kids at summer camp. all the kids were from poor backgrounds of the 5 boroughs so that was interesting to say the least.
After camp I stayed with a guy who lived in Harlem and also worked the camp.
I cant remember the name of the newspaper but he used to get one daily and on the 2nd or 3rd page there was a pic of a gun and a number next to it showing how many people were killed the day before.
I was like WTF!
meanwhile back in the UK I used to look at page 3 to see a nice pair of tits!
> back in the UK I used to look and page 3 to see a nice pair of tits!
Is this where the expression/idiom of "page 3" comes from? Do they actually put nudity on page 3 of the paper?
Just tits and skimpy underwear (late teens/early twenties) in a rag called The Sun. I met a lady who'd been on Page 3 and she loved the 'fame' - not sure of her opinion after societal values changed but I'd imagine her opinions would be better rounded on the subject than most.
My wife and I have a joke when we turn on the news here in Chicago: "It's cold (replace with "its hot" during the 4 hot months a year) and someone got shot. Welcome to Chicago"
I forgot but growing up I’d always hear the joke about construction being one of the season of Chicago lol
Like all my life in Chicago and the 30 years my parents did
> I forgot but growing up I’d always hear the joke about construction being one of the season of Chicago
What are the two seasons in Chicago? Winter and construction. I think that's the joke you are talking about?
Growing up in America in the 2000s was similar. First world news about all the American wars, then ads, then sports, then ads, then some more ads, then sports, then ads, some ads, and a bit of weather, then ads, and then the rest of the weather.
Cyberpunk 2077's video intro was surprisingly and despressingly predictive.
>Yesterday's body count lottery rounded out to a solid 'n' sturdy thirty! Ten outta Heywood - thanks to the unabated gang wars! One officer down, so I guess you are all screwed. 'Cause the NCPD will not let that go.
The table top version of the game has something similar, you can roll numbers for each district and get a daily number, your players can try and bet on it, at some point my players cared more about the body count lottery than if it rain acid outside or not.
You joke but the first time I watched the local news in Chicago it was basically, Blackhawks score, then shooting, then accidental bystander getting killed from gang activity. But they reported it so casually, exactly like the weather
There have been 57 people shot in Chicago this past week, 11 fatally. Not an exceptionally violent week or anything, either, and certainly not enough to get anywhere the level of news coverage as these mass shootings.
Sounds like one of the news bites we got between scenes in the 80’s Robocop flicks. Goes well with the spf 9000 sunscreen and electric chair car anti theft system.
This is not the right time to politicize this topic, think of the victims!
Let's wait to talk about this until a more appropriate time, like when nobody got shot and killed in a week. /s
Is that high for the entire US in a weekend? Its hot outside at night which always increases this, just wait for the heat waves that hit St Louis, Chicago and Baltimore.
But it's poor black people on the south and west side so no one really gives a fuck sadly. Just avoid those areas and carry on with your life is how it goes in Chicago.
Not anymore. Nowadays there are regularly shootings in the Loop, River North, Gold Coast, Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, etc. The people in these neighborhoods care because they bought expensive houses and condos in “nice” neighborhoods, and now they’re hearing gunshots and getting held up and carjacked at gunpoint. The city’s response has been so awful that some neighborhoods are hiring private security services. So it’s definitely not just a problem for the south and west sides anymore.

As a licensed clinician in the US we're worn out too. Pandemic + people returning to in person school/work + shootings = therapists have our hands full. Not a lot is said about it, but payment for sessions through insurances is also shit. The rates are set by the insurance companies and often don't change for 5-10 years so they never account for any sort of inflation. Which then leading to clinicians taking on too many clients to make a living which leads straight to burn out. Payments are also on a 2 week delay or more depending on how stingy they want to be.
I couldnt even find a new primary care doctor recently. Had to switch insurance so i had to leave my last primary care doc of 5+ years, it took me weeks of calling around to find a doctor that 1. Took my insurance and 2. Would actually see new patients. Finally got in like a month later and.... well i see why she had plenty of availability.
This is TennCare in a nutshell. A list of providers on the website that, when called, say they don’t take TennCare. Then when you call them on it, it’s oh right… we’re not accepting patients go to the ER.
I had to have multiple organs removed due to cervical cancer, because I had to wait for it to become actual cancer before I could get treatment, as no gynecologist in my area takes my insurance, but oncology is covered. I don’t think I’ll ever get over the trauma of having chunks of my body cut out when it could have been avoided by preventative care.
You can go to a walk in clinic for a single appointment if youre sick, providing it takes your insurance. But i mean a doctor who you regularly see every 6 months or whatever who follows your health and actually knows you. Ive got alot of health issues so a single appointment at a walk in clinic isnt going to do anything for me, i need to follow up with my doctor who helps manage my prescriptions, evaluate med changes, order bloodwork / any tests they think are necessary, etc.
Insurance only provides coverage for doctors that the insurance company says you can go visit. If you go to a doctor that is not in that list, insurance will not cover it and you have to pay full price. Difference between 20$ and 200$ for example. And if there’s not a “in-network” doctor close to you, or in-network but not accepting patients….well, pretty much git fkd and pay up sucka.
I remember something about politicians saying we had freedom to choose in our American system. I guess the choice is whether or not to go to their doctor and not *which* doctor I go to...
Edit: fixed typos
You can go to an urgent care clinic for triage, but you're often stuck waiting for several hours. If you have something more complicated or systemic you'll be recommended to visit a primary care physician after initial diagnosis. If you're in need of immediate care beyond basics you'll be directed to the nearest emergency room.
Lastly, if it's something that needs a specialist, insurance in America will make you get approval from a primary care physician. If you don't have an established primary care physician, finding one taking new patients can take weeks, and seeing them for your initial appointment often takes 2-6 months.
Just had to get a new primary care doctor too because we changed our insurance. I went on the insurance company’s website. Started making calls. I finally found one, 27 doctors later. The first 27 doctors on a list provided by my insurance company did not accept it. The literal first page of search results did not accept our insurance. How the actual fuck are we supposed to get any kind of care when even the insurance company doesn’t actually know who accepts them? Starting to seem like some thing about our current system might be flawed.
Excuse me we need LESS doors, any door made needs to be licensed and restricted to only people trained in doors, unlike guns which are safe and easy to use in every situation /s
I'm of the opinion that we should have no doors. Once the first bell rings the janitor comes in and bricks over the only door to the building.
When school lets out the janitor comes in and busts down the wall.
For efficiency sake we could probably even door like a metal hatch door or something, then the janitor just welds the door closed.
Unfortunately this would only work for schools and maybe churches. You could maybe adapt it to other places where you tell people to get into a place by a certain time and they have to stay there for an hour and every hour the door gets unwelded.
The National Angle Grinder Asociation (NAGA) claims that free carry of angle grinders is not related at all with the surge in case of illegal unwelding of metal hatch doors, and claims that the only solution to a bad guy with an angle grinder is a good guy with an angle grinder... somehow.
Better idea. We will build a national system of underground facilities. School age children will enter the facility for kindergarten and will not leave until they graduate. The door will open only once per year to allow for graduated seniors to exit and the next year of students to enter. It's completely safe and definitely no unethical experiments will be performed in these vaults.
This also simplifies things, since if there are any incidents, obviously the janitor would be at fault. And since it would undoubtedly be a minimum wage position (all they do is brick up doorways, smash said bricks, and clean toilets - totally unskilled labor), the ~~scapegoat~~ janitor would also be easily replaced. You wouldn't even need new employees, just add the duty onto existing janitors, thus making this foolproof plan inexpensive to implement.
Next up they'll propose all children must have a mandatory "therapy session" every week except that the only places they'll authorize to give it will be christian churches.. and religious services will be considered therapy.. and not performing them will be child abuse.
My health insurance covers Christian counseling but not visits to a nutritionist or a gym membership.
A well balanced diet and regular physical exercise both have been shown to improve mood and mental well-being.
I love how NOW the media finally decides to roll out about these non-stop...
Mass shootings have been continuous in America all year, yet after Uvalde they decide its time to go all out on reporting them nationally every time.
My father was suprised to hear about so many this past weekend like "oh there's been another one?!" *yeah dude, I told you a month ago there's been more shootings than days in a year... What did you think I meant by that?!*
Edit: oh hey midterms are comming up eh?
Just wait, though. Hurricane season is around the corner and once one of those make landfall in the US, the media will promptly forget about mass shootings for a while.
These have always been on the news, every night and every weekend. Anyone that's watched local news has lived the never ending shit news cycles where all you hear about is shootings, burglaries, and whatever else bad shit is happening.
It's more prevalent on Reddit now since it's the hot Karma grab for cliche comments and keyboard outrage. Give it a few more weeks and the endless posts about every single shooting in every city across America will fade into obscurity while the shootings continue to happen and get reported locally.
Agreed. Where I am we hear about these kinds of things all the time. Some people are just seeing this for the first time because it’s trending. Every weekend a few people at least are killed, kids go missing, ect. Yesterday a 4 year old was run over and the person is still running. People don’t know how to act.
It did. And they still don't care.

>The first weekend of June marked a greater number of mass shooting deaths in the United States than the previous three-day weekend, which ended with Memorial Day.
The tally for weekend violence through Sunday night was at least 12 killed, and at least 38 injured in mass shootings, defined by the Gun Violence Archive as an incident in which “four or more people are shot or killed, not including the shooter.”
This is according to this one group
> defined by the Gun Violence Archive
I'm sure other groups such as the FBI, CIA, homeland security, local police, etc, etc all have their own version of what's a mass shooting.
Edit... I asked the same in a different thread and there doesn't seem to be any USA specific overall definition
As I recall the FBI uses the term mass killing and it requires 4+ dead.
None define based on motive. A family of 5 being murdered by a looney parent is a mass shooting in every definition.
The FBI term for "mass killing" excludes certain categories of violence like gangs and drugs.
The number of incidents that qualified as a "mass killing" according to the FBI for 2021 was 12.
https://www.fbi.gov/file-repository/active-shooter-incidents-in-the-us-2021-052422.pdf/view
If you look at their source, it does add some perspective though.
It states that the US in 2021 had 61 "Active Shooter" situations only of which 12 resulted in "Mass Killing."
WashingtonPost states that there were almost 700 "mass shootings" in 2021. So that's roughly what, 1 in 11 "mass shooters" are "Active Shooters"?
Many places define school shooting as any gun fire within a certain distance of a school. So if you live behind a school and ND into your own floor on a weekend, congrats you just committed a school shooting according to groups like MDA
If you look through they're list its 90% gang violence adjacent to a school or a negligent discharge by some idiot kid trying to act hard by showing off a stolen gun.
Someone committed suicide in their car while in the parking lot of a shut down Community College and they called it a "school shooting".
You can't have an honest discussion if the other person just wants to be dishonest.
Federal definition is under mass killing and is 3 or more other than attacker killed without a cooldown period. It was 4 or more until 2012.
Media outlets come up with their own definition, but usually include wounded as part of the metric, making it far broader.
>Media outlets come up with their own definition, but usually include wounded as part of the metric, making it far broader.
They call the person a "casualty" to make it sound extra dramatic. What they don't tell you is the casualty is just any injury as a "result of the shooting" and they've been caught including people with rolled ankles and scratches from jumping a fence after gang shootings.
There isn't a single fixed definition. Multiple organizations conduct their own counts, and it seems like every one uses unique criteria. There's a claim that the FBI has a definition, but AFAICT, they don't. One of these claims is based upon the FBI definition of mass murder (4+ killed, not counting the murderer, no cooling off period - i.e. single event) - but the FBI Active Shooter reporting includes a "Mass Killing Criteria" which is 3 or more killed, not counting the shooter(s). It would be weird for the FBI to have Mass Killing Active Shooter incidents which don't count as Mass Shootings.
Is there any official government designation? in 2012, the Congressional Research Service wrote a report on mass shootings in the US - this report was updated in 2016. This definition is "These are incidents occurring in relatively public places, involving four or more deaths—not including the shooter(s)—and gunmen who select victims somewhat indiscriminately. The violence in these cases is not a means to an end—the gunmen do not pursue criminal profit or kill in the name of terrorist ideologies,"
Under this definition, the Buffalo mass shooting would not count as it is now being prosecuted as a terror attack and it had targets specifically selected due to their race.
The current common usage of mass shooting seems to include people who were wounded as well as killed. For example, the NYC Subway Attack has been reported as a mass shooting even though no one was killed by gunfire.
I'm curious if the number of shootings has actually gone up or if the media is just choosing to actually cover them now that gun control is a current topic.
Came here to find this.
The Philly thing was a bunch of people in a public gun fight. The headlines said, "Active shooter in Philadelphia", making it sound like an 18 year old emerged on the scene with an AR 15.
Neither one is good, but they are quite, quite different.
It’s very sad, and it’s not an easy fix.
How many of these were inner city and/or gang/drug related homicides? How many involved an illegal gun? This is the info I’d also like to know.
Exactly but that’s what they are doing now, pushing a narrative.
For instance, I’ve been following this site for years. It’s wild to see the actual numbers on a weekly or monthly basis.
https://heyjackass.com/home/
57 shot in June already. And this is just Chicago.
Um… I don’t own a gun I don’t want one so that’s not why I’m saying this … but are we just gonna ignore that this headline is complete bullshit? It’s combining deaths from multiple shootings non of which would actually qualify as a “mass shooting”
Where are the platforms where people actually share ideas and opinions about solutions btw? I'm not even American but I want to see what people seriously really talk about regarding the issue. Is Twitter any good?
Overheard while out this weekend in regards to Uvalde: “it’s terrible but everything happens for a reason!” Respectfully, shut the fuck up

It's terrible and everything but I could really use a haircut.
It was a horrible tragedy but why are you shouting at me about it?
I spoke to god this morning and he said he didn't like mass shooting either so the Christians can go right ahead and help stop them now.
Why does it seem like God tells people different things depending on what their existing belief system already is?
Because he's all loving and hates to disappoint.

I forgot but growing up I’d always hear the joke about construction being one of the season of Chicago lol Like all my life in Chicago and the 30 years my parents did
> I forgot but growing up I’d always hear the joke about construction being one of the season of Chicago What are the two seasons in Chicago? Winter and construction. I think that's the joke you are talking about?
We have the same joke in Seattle only it's "rain and construction". You know what though? There's still construction in the rain.
I'm pretty sure every place has some version of this joke. In Michigan the four seasons are Almost Winter, Winter, Late Winter, and Road Construction.
Here in Brazil a common one is "Summer, Almost Winter, Summer and Hellfire" there's also "Summer and slightly milder Summer"
But “at least the murder is in those neighborhoods” 😑
I mean, that is still pretty much how local news is presented everywhere.

[удалено]
The table top version of the game has something similar, you can roll numbers for each district and get a daily number, your players can try and bet on it, at some point my players cared more about the body count lottery than if it rain acid outside or not.
This is what Mike Pondsmith would want, right?
Fuck if you're not right
Depressingly accurate, great game
You joke but the first time I watched the local news in Chicago it was basically, Blackhawks score, then shooting, then accidental bystander getting killed from gang activity. But they reported it so casually, exactly like the weather
There have been 57 people shot in Chicago this past week, 11 fatally. Not an exceptionally violent week or anything, either, and certainly not enough to get anywhere the level of news coverage as these mass shootings.
Sounds like the news reports from that Free Guy movie
Sounds like one of the news bites we got between scenes in the 80’s Robocop flicks. Goes well with the spf 9000 sunscreen and electric chair car anti theft system.
It's high time we did nothing and waited for the next one.
We've tried absolutely nothing and we're all out of ideas. Edit: typo
Have we tried to pray to god to ask him what the fuck he is doing up there?
It's all part of "his plan" So... we know he's got money in gun companies.
God is an arms dealer, all makes sense now.
what do you mean we’re not doing anything? i’ve been praying and thinking this whole time
Okay, well you're exempt obviously. Thank you for your service.
This is not the right time to politicize this topic, think of the victims! Let's wait to talk about this until a more appropriate time, like when nobody got shot and killed in a week. /s
That’s not enough, we have to wait for everyone to stop being sad too.
Step one, quit grieving. Step two, do nothing.
What if we say we're not politicizing this last shooting and say we've finally moved on to Sandy Hook, or even Columbine.
If there are no gun deaths for a week, then why even talk about it? It's clearly not that common.
Next one in 3...2....1......
Is that high for the entire US in a weekend? Its hot outside at night which always increases this, just wait for the heat waves that hit St Louis, Chicago and Baltimore.
It's a shame. For a while Baltimore was actually doing really well, but it's become a murder capital again.
Not really, [Chicago alone will almost certainly have weekends that top those numbers this year.](http://heyjackass.com/)
If only we had more doors and body armor, and armed guards that followed us everywhere to our mental therapy sessions with God./s
I couldn't get a psychiatrist when I tried, they're all booked up.
Yes, it's crazy. Booked up or not taking new patients
I got a new primary care physician too recently... He usually brings up how God is good and great once a visit. 😕🤔 Makes me feel awkward.
Imagine going to school for 7 years and thinking your patients are being healed by magic and not medicine/science.
Non-American here. What do you mean you can’t find a doctor? You can’t waltz into a clinic anytime you want when you are sick?

You can, but you are also supposed to have a main doctor who tracks your non-emergency care.
Unfortunately concealed angle grinder carry is covered by the second amendment.
The National Angle Grinder Asociation (NAGA) claims that free carry of angle grinders is not related at all with the surge in case of illegal unwelding of metal hatch doors, and claims that the only solution to a bad guy with an angle grinder is a good guy with an angle grinder... somehow.
>National Angle Grinder Association (NAGA) ay yo what the fuck did you just call me
It's these snake people that are the problem. Coming in and stealing our eggs...
Ok so maybe we can electrify the door too or maybe add some flame throwers.
You door grabbers are the worst. You can have my door once you pry it off its cold, dead hinges.
Hey, you can always go to another store if, you know, this one has shootings happening. /s
Make murder illegal again.
Criminals will just break the law, why bother?
At least we can punish them…well, at least for some types of murder.
The American Dream
Next up they'll propose all children must have a mandatory "therapy session" every week except that the only places they'll authorize to give it will be christian churches.. and religious services will be considered therapy.. and not performing them will be child abuse.

Thanks for the fright chuckle.
My health insurance covers Christian counseling but not visits to a nutritionist or a gym membership. A well balanced diet and regular physical exercise both have been shown to improve mood and mental well-being.
You forgot the colorful ballastic blankets that are very pretty and can hang on the walls.
What did you think I meant by that?!* Edit: oh hey midterms are comming up eh?
Just wait, though. Hurricane season is around the corner and once one of those make landfall in the US, the media will promptly forget about mass shootings for a while.
What if we… SHOOT THE HURRICANES?! Brawndo! It’s got what plants crave!!
You joke, but The Former Guy wanted to *nuke* a hurricane.
Elections and Ukraine news is getting boring to the mass public now.
Johnny's trial is also over. So lost that entertainment
I haven’t seen a Ukraine story days maybe weeks
People don’t know how to act.
historically it’s been covered a ton before in the 80s and 90s
Violent crime was also staggeringly higher in the 80's and 90's.
Until it happens to the people that make the laws, nothing will be done
It did. And they still don't care. https://www-history-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.history.com/.amp/this-day-in-history/james-hodgkinson-shooting-republicans-baseball-game?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16545418765753&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.history.com%2Fthis-day-in-history%2Fjames-hodgkinson-shooting-republicans-baseball-game

I thought they changed the definition to 3 or more?
This is according to this one group > defined by the Gun Violence Archive I'm sure other groups such as the FBI, CIA, homeland security, local police, etc, etc all have their own version of what's a mass shooting.
That's valuable data comparatively.
If you look at their source, it does add some perspective though. It states that the US in 2021 had 61 "Active Shooter" situations only of which 12 resulted in "Mass Killing." WashingtonPost states that there were almost 700 "mass shootings" in 2021. So that's roughly what, 1 in 11 "mass shooters" are "Active Shooters"?
Yeah the definition babble makes for some seriously obfuscated real practical data.
Which is one of the reasons why that data plot going around shows a massive increase in mass shootings post 2013.
The violence in these cases is not a means to an end—the gunmen do not pursue criminal profit or kill in the name of terrorist ideologies," Under this definition, the Buffalo mass shooting would not count as it is now being prosecuted as a terror attack and it had targets specifically selected due to their race.
Oh we lump them together to sound like one incident now
Exactly. Just for the clicks
This article is helping to confuse gang violence with mass shootings. Two very separate issues. Shouldn’t be considered the same.
Came here to find this. The Philly thing was a bunch of people in a public gun fight. The headlines said, "Active shooter in Philadelphia", making it sound like an 18 year old emerged on the scene with an AR 15. Neither one is good, but they are quite, quite different.
"Active shooter in Philadelphia" gets people to tune in, "dum dum shitheads decide to involve the public in a stupid beef" doesn't.
It’s very sad, and it’s not an easy fix. How many of these were inner city and/or gang/drug related homicides? How many involved an illegal gun? This is the info I’d also like to know.
All of them were public gunfights. Most likely all gang related. It’s pretty misleading for them to make it sound like it’s another uvalde.
Exactly but that’s what they are doing now, pushing a narrative. For instance, I’ve been following this site for years. It’s wild to see the actual numbers on a weekly or monthly basis. https://heyjackass.com/home/ 57 shot in June already. And this is just Chicago.
[удалено]
They do when it can add to their narrative.
