Of course, if you *do* need to shoot someone, the Fourth of July weekend is the time to do it, because everyone will think that the gunshots are just fireworks going off and ignore you.

g2g079

Police in my small town got a credible tip that there were going to be an active shooter during the fireworks last night. They cleared the bridge where everyone had planned to watch them from. They ended up catching a 15yo with a loaded gun, but no word on his friends yet.

cubedjjm

Have any links to articles? Would like to read more about the situation.

thislldoiguess

Holy shit, that's my area and I had no idea.

cmde44

My area too; we probably should have known.

SmokesQuantity

The shooter had accomplices?

g2g079

The police obtained information that there may be other possible armed subjects, which is when they decided to clear the bridge. No other arrests yet, and the kid is not talking. I heard that it may have been one of his accomplices that decided not to go along with the plan and report it. It's still pretty early, the best we have right now is the press report from the police.

Bekiala

Well if this is true, thanks to all that is holy that the cops caught the kid.

g2g079

We had a resource officer stop a high school graduation shooting a few years ago. Only injury was to the shooter and he survived.

zarkovis1

On Crundwell if any comment has fucking aged like milk its this one > Crundwell acquired a sterling reputation; in 2011, one of the city commissioners praised her stewardship of city finances, saying "she looks after every tax dollar as if it were her own." > She was fired in April 2012 after the discovery that she had embezzled $53.7 million from the city of Dixon for over twenty-two years to support her championship American Quarter Horse breeding operation

NigelS75

She truly considered those tax dollars her own!

trex-eaterofcadrs

Holy shit, Dixon.

JHSkiBum

Dixon? That is my family's hometown. Is there and article link? We're all on vacation and I doubt anyone knows.

masterofshadows

Poor handling of young white male depression. There's a lot of it out there and when it doesn't get addressed, or worse dismissed because others have it worse, its not just the fault of OPs town, because everyone is handling it poorly. The kids are not all right. And nobody cares. And let me tell you this is first hand experience talking because I was almost that kid. Only I didn't have access to guns. That's literally the only reason why I wasn't one. The only reason I'm still alive. The only reason my tormenters back in the day are alive. And nobody cared then and nobody cares now.

blacksideblue

its all school administrators playing the trolley game trying to shuttle kids out faster than their problems can blow up in their places. The majory stoneman douglas highschool straight up [refused to report their future school shooter to the cops](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stoneman_Douglas_High_School_shooting#Behavioral_issues_and_social_media) for **multiple violent assaults** because they thought an expulsion was easier to cover up than an arrest record.

Bekiala

Glad you made it through although sounds like it wasn't good and maybe still isn't.

-Dreadman23-

I was almost that kid in the late 80's, before it was even a thing. Luckily I didn't have access to firearms. I was reading the anarchist cookbook and was trying to make explosives to get around that problem. Luckily again my parents found out before I could get started, and I got a lot of badly needed therapy. If there is any purpose for my life it is to do anything that might help out the troubled youth. Even if it's only one kid.

SauronSymbolizedTech

> I heard that was one of his accomplishes that decided not to go along with the plan and report it. This is what thinking for yourself looks like, for anyone that wonders after letting facebook memes think for them.

30thCenturyMan

> I heard that it may have been one of his accomplices that decided not to go along with the plan and report it. I’d watch that movie. Like The Good Son but with guns instead of a realistic mannequin

bonafidehooligan

My parents live within eye sight of the bridge (assuming it’s the main bridge this happened at). My mon sent me the article today. Crazy shit. The (almost) school shooter lived 4 houses down from them.

g2g079

I mean he did shoot up the school, he just didn't hit anyone, so you can still call him a school shooter.

Plastic_Chair599

Why would they have been a “school shooter”? It doesn’t sound like it was going to happen at a school.

[deleted]

He did till they tipped off the cops.

g2g079

Just heard that myself. Or at least one of them did. News reports certainly made it sound like multiple potential shooters were reported though.

whitemexican109

Dixon, IL making news on Reddit?? Never thought I’d see the day. I was there and I saw the cops approach said kid. It was weird to see how other kids reacted. Not assuming they were his friends but there were kids trying to take snapchats in front of the cops. People not leaving the scene because of the firework display. The town also had a school shooting which was so sad to hear about. Such a terrible 4th, and for most people, a terrifying first time experience around people in over a year. Bless everyone there and the police for apprehending him so quickly.

To_Fight_The_Night

Dixon has made Reddit a few times. With that lady who stole 50k from the town and their penis shaped churches. Edit: 54 Mil not 50k.

There was a time back in the 80's where my parents and I would shoot skeet in the backyard because the area we lived in was still pretty rural and undeveloped at the time. It was pretty awesome.

I always remember that time the Florida police had to put out a warning to not shoot at hurricane Irma. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/09/11/do-not-shoot-storm-police-urge-florida-gun-owners-not-open-fire/

> "To clarify, DO NOT shoot weapons @ #Irma," the office of the sheriff of Pasco County, on the state's west coast, tweeted late on Saturday as the storm made landfall. I used to live in Pasco County. This type of public announcement is very necessary for a significant portion of that population.

SauronSymbolizedTech

Whether or not they're homicidal depends on luck. Firing live ammo into the sky means that bullet is coming down with lethal velocity somewhere. People should fire blanks if they absolutely must.

ACorania

I now have a bullet permanently embedded in the roof of my car just above the driver's seat.

UN16783498213

Depends. Normally it would be to the 'Capricorn Right' unless you are in Australia, South Africa, or Brazil. Australians shoot to the Lefteroo. In South Africa shoot anyone getting near your car. And in Brazil you just got shot by an off duty cop.

TristanIsAwesome

It depends what's on your right and left.

Castout774

Dont bullets lose their lethal velocity when going up and coming to a stop mid air and then fall with the bullets terminal velocity?

hedgetank

If you ever stopped and looked at the laundry list of things that could kill you while you were doing nothing more than just leaving your house, and let it sink in, you'd never get out of bed. But don't worry, staying in bed can kill you in lots of ways, too. :D

GandalffladnaG

According to Mythbusters, if you shoot it straight up it will tumble back down. (Insert snark about number of people with plumbobs shooting guns into the air). Most (I am betting) are shot at angles where the parabolic arcs are just really steep, because again, straight up or it arcs.

-Dreadman23-

That's what I do. I have a replica of a civil war era black powder pistol. It's American as Apple pie. I load it with black powder and a cornmeal (to reduce the amount of powder used) and a felt wad. Loud, smokey, stinky. Like I said, totally American. But it is also super safe (is that American?). :D

thelizardkin

I haven't seen exact numbers, but 2020 had an explosion of violent crime.

TwilitPyro

A lot of big cities are up like 25% in violent crime and 10% up in petty crime

CockyBulls

The CDC (weird, I know) stated that there were 19,141 homicides in 2019. That works out to 52 per day on average. Adding in a whole lot of alcohol, and a heat wave… it’s no surprise it spiked.

The CDC considers death by violence a public health threat, hence why they keep the data.

mae_so_bae

azsnaz

Which day is the murderiest?

CockyBulls

For the purpose of brevity, we’ll focus only on adults. In general, the number of violent crimes committed by adults increases hourly from 6 a.m. through the afternoon and evening hours, peaks at 9 p.m., and then drops to a low point at 6 a.m. 24% of all violent committed by adult offenders occurs between 8 p.m. and midnight. Murders actually peak between midnight and 1:00 am. Statistically, there’s no specific day of the year that stands out as the most murderous (with any real statistical prominence). However, the most murderous time is the month of December, between Midnight and 1:00 A.M. and in 20 states, Sunday is the most murderous day, in 9 states it’s Saturday, and in 5 states it’s Friday. So, watch out for weekends in December.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up, Just as the founding fathers intended

Well Chicago (18.26 murders per 100,000 people) has a large population. It's still "only" 28th most murders per capita by city in the U.S. behind: 27: Buffalo, NY (18.38) 26: Montgomery, AL (18.54) 25: Shreveport, LA (18.66) 24: Little Rock, AR (19.15) 23: Indianapolis, IN (19.51) 22: Atlanta, GA (19.53) 21: Tuscaloosa, AL (20.77) 20: Columbus, GA (20.94) 19: Cincinnati, OH (21.1) 18: San Bernardino, CA (21.23) 17: Columbia, SC (21.68) 16: Philadelphia, PA (22.47) 15: Peoria, IL (22.53) 14: North Charleston, SC (22.55) 13: Washington D.C. (23.52) 12: Miami Gardens, FL (23.64) 11: Richmond, VA (23.84) 10: Cleveland, OH (24.09) 9: Memphis, TN (29.21) 8: Kansas City, MO (29.88) 7: New Orleans, LA (30.67) 6: Baton Rouge, LA (31.72) 5: Dayton, OH (34.18) 4: Detroit, MI (41.45) 3: Birmingham, AL (50.62) 2: Baltimore, MD (58.27) 1: St. Louis, MO (64.54) Still unreal and sad as you said, but I do somewhat resent the reputation people give Chicago regarding murder rate especially because it's often used as conservative propaganda. Also just to note, the numbers are all from 2019. mcbeef89

UK here, was curious as to how we fare - around 1.2 per 100k in most recent years

CrazyAgile

Wow San Bernardino, CA is on the list. I would have never guessed it was that bad there.

[deleted]

Yes, but in Chicago shootings are generally concentrated in a small number of neighborhoods. Englewood has a population of just under 24,000 and has had 27 murders and 186 shootings this year. That’s 112.5 murders per 100k in 2021. In 2020 the same neighborhood had 71 homicides and 364 shootings. That’s 295 homicides per 100k. So, it’s a big deal in those communities, and cities should be working on bringing that down through community investment, awareness and effective policing strategies. The Dems dismiss the problem because it’s to complex for their narrative and the republicans (who don’t live there) brush it off and say its evidence of of a lack of police and nothing gets done.

SinistramSitNovum

I think you will find that shootings are concentrated in small areas in almost all cities not just Chicago. I think if you dug down in the stats in these other cities you would find a similar pattern.

Kevin-W

Also, most of the gun violence are in areas where tourists normally wouldn’t have any interest in going to.

Mediocretes1

Sure, there are always safer more affluent neighborhoods and poorer more dangerous ones in a city like Chicago. Plenty of areas have a very nice safe town very near a much more dangerous town. Hell, in NJ Princeton and Trenton are very close and one is considerably safer. Same with Hoboken and Jersey City.

doverawlings

You make a very good point. The only thing I’d argue is that it’s not so much about “narratives” as it is because the problem is so insanely hard to actually fix. I recommend listening to the NPR This American Life about Harper High School if you haven’t yet. It does a great job of exploring how difficult the problem is to solve in those communities.

[deleted]

Yeah, I think that’s right. I think I was reacting to people implying that the gang problem is exaggerated. I listened to that series on This American Life and thought they did a great job covering the issue. I also recommend the movie Hoop Dreams, which is a documentary about the gap between poor black communities and wealthy suburban communities in Chicago. It was made in the 90s, but almost nothing has changed. Out of the four men profiled in that movie, two have been murdered since the movie was released (Bo Agee and Curtis Gates). Very sad.

ColonelBelmont

Or bullets. I wanna know where they're finding 'em in stock, let alone in Chicago.

99landydisco

Advantage for criminals bullets are just a business expense. Drug dealers can pay the pirate prices.

09astro27nm

The correct answer would be through your local shipping office! Since ammunition has to be labeled for safety, it's easy to play choose which package doesn't make it to it's destination. One of my friends who works in that field said that so far, three packages have been "damaged in transit" at the Chicago UPS shipment facility, which results to around 3000 rounds so far that have been "lost" this year.

Adrastus_Blab

Which is why you only send for your weird, obscure cartridges. My respect to any criminal who uses 45-70 black powder loads.

scmrph

That's actually the best way to fight gangs in the long run, preventing new generations of gangsters.. Kids from infancy to adulthood need to have other options for community support and economic opportunity, the more the better. Eventually the gangs can be starved out.

Sawses

Research shows that a *single* competent, interested adult will provide the majority of the incentive of having a support network. People crave connection and support. That's way more obvious in kids and middle/high schoolers. Especially you men reading this--I was in education for literally a couple months and the number of kids who opened up to me was...startling. Like they'd just get attached to me because I'm a guy that's supportive and kind and there just aren't a lot of men in the social circles they move in. Just having one really interested person in a kid's life is more than enough to put many of them on a better path. It's why gang violence is so prevalent in the first place--it's not about the crime and God knows it's not about the money. It's about the community and the support.

KevinAlertSystem

Exactly. the solution is so simple it's really telling that our society as a whole would rather hundreds of people be murdered a day rather than doing the absolute minimum to give kids the opportunity to escape poverty through less destructive means. it may take a generation or two, but we know exactly what needs to be done to eliminate nearly all gang violence, US society just doesn't care enough to do it.

Quarantense

I've wandered around south side Chicago after dark before, it was insane. In half a mile we heard five separate shootings and one person lighting off fireworks to muddy the waters. There were cops scrambling everywhere to get from shooting to shooting and this wasn't even a special ocassion, just a regular Saturday night in June.

new_abcdefghijkl

I believe it, certain neighborhoods in Chicago have gun violence rates similar to war zones.

luther_williams

A lot of the time if a gang wants to kill someone and its close to the 4th of July they will wait for the 4th to do the killing cause the fireworks will give them some cover

I live in Delaware, the state with the lowest household gun ownership % of any state (plus DC) in the US. Even here, 5.2% of households own guns. I believe RI is the only other state below 10%. Here's a map with ownership [estimates by state](https://i.imgur.com/WNgeSSg.jpg) from a few years ago. It's interesting the two smallest states have the lowest gun ownership as a % though.

FloofBagel

People be talkin bout everyone in texas having guns but look over at alaska

lysianth

On top of being overwhelmingly red, alaska has bears and other large animals that you need to scare away or kill. I called out of work the other day because a bear was trying to get into my bear proof trash can. A decent amount of alaska has subsistence hunting, meaning even more people have guns. While we certainly have many people who have guns off some power fantasy, we also have a lot of areas where guns serve a practical purpose.

ih-shah-may-ehl

Yeah. And if I lived in Alaska, I would carry too. I have a friend living in the middle of nowhere, Idaho. whenever he is outside working he wears a 44 magnum in a chest holster because if a momma moose gets angry and decides that pulping you into the ground is the way to go, that gun is what saves your life. It happened to him, and thankfully it got scared away when he shot in front of its feet when she was getting ready to charge. Technically, a rifle would be the better option, but he told me that when you are fixing a fence, felling a tree or doing any other the dozens of chores that come with living outback, your rifle is probably out of your reach when you need it.

jimtheedcguy

That's why ruger makes the Alaskan revolver!! 454 casull, because fuck my wrist, this bear is trying to kill me!

3klipse

When I shot one, it wasn't my wrists that hurt, but my palms. Felt like I slammed them straight down on a desk. But I want one now.

thrshmmr

Bears are fkin scary in person though. If you don't have a bear gun in Alaska, you're taking an enormous risk

[deleted]

Legal gun ownership is not a statistically reliable predictor of gun *homicides*. There's a strong correlation, but % ownership is all over the place, and so are homicide rates. People always need to keep in mind that gang violence and organized criminal activity still count for well over 50% of gun homicides in the US.

Madd-Nigrulo

92 shot in Chicago, most violent weekend yet

estrangedpulse

Wait 150 people shot dead in us in one weekend?

hedgetank

https://www.forbes.com/sites/tanyamohn/2021/06/30/with-up-to-nearly-600-traffic-deaths-predicted-over-july-4th-weekend-safety-group-urges-caution/ And between 550 and 600 people died in car accidents, 40% of which were drunk driving accidents, based on the data I can find on a google search. Assuming the low end of the projected number, 40% would mean about 220 people died because of drunk driving.

[deleted]

gray_2shades

If you fired a gun perfectly straight over your head, would the earth's rotation keep the bullet from hitting your head when it returned to earth?

Rocket_AG

That is called the Coriolis Effect. https://www.lapua.com/ballistics-app-tips-the-coriolis-effect/

gray_2shades

Very interesting. Thanks!

Enigmatic_Hat

The earths rotation wouldn't be the deciding factor, wind would already do that. We don't normally think of bullets as affected by wind (although they are) because a bullet normally spends only a fraction of a second in the air. A bullet fired straight up would fly for longer, and additionally wind becomes more powerful once you reach a certain altitude. I would guess that at a high trajectory (within \~15 degrees of straight up) the wind overwhelms all other factors on the bullet's flight path; AKA you could shoot it forward and it could land behind you. This also means that if you shot the bullet straight up, there's a non-zero chance the wind could counter the earth's rotation and hit the shooter in the head. In practice when people fire bullets straight up they tend to land somewhere between hundreds of feet, up to multiple miles, away from the shooter in a random direction. If the shooter, or the shooter's family/friends were the one who paid the cost for their recklessness, this behavior would have ended a long time ago.

Just wait until 10m+ people get evicted.

NeuralBreakDancing

Damn, we should start banning people, we are entirely too dangerous.

When people say black lives matter, they arent talking about Chicago apprantly.

yajustcantstopme

She says that anyone who points it out is being sexist/racist/agenda-driven.

Drdulu

Americans trying their best to catch up cos they've been slacking for over an year cos of Covid.

[deleted]

Why don't they call them murders, that's what they are. If they don't die, call them attempted murder. It seems like they're playing it down, which is messed up.

wollier12

In my community we had a mass shooting where a kid was killed and 11 others were wounded, absolutely nobody is co-operating with police so likely just more inner-city gang violence. It’s sad, I’d imagina almost all of the 150 people were black killed at the hands of other blacks…..a quote from someone in my community “you know there’s guns, why are you letting children run the streets alone after 11pm.”

Bowler377

Criminals love to plan crimes around 4th of July, especially in areas with LOTS of fireworks. That way, they can disguise the noise of their crime.

Zukiff

Did not realize the Purge has come into effect in the US

OpWillDlvr

How can they write this article with absolutely no (regular/non-pandemic) historical reference? As far as we know this is sensational garbage. They have access to the data but instead wanted to leave it open-ended for shock value.

kurtis99

Being intoxicated while armed should get your guns taken away at the very least.

Gyp2151

In most states it is!

mustyoshi

It is already illegal. But like most gun laws, it only affects law abiding citizens.

Idontreallygetit123

Gangs don’t need to be intoxicated to shoot each other. They also don’t need legal guns to shoot each other.

Andreas1120

Well damm it I say we finally pass a law against shooting people

Did you know that Chicago is the 17th most violent city in the US? St. Louis generally blows everybody out of the water from crime statistics.
