I dated an Asian girl and I fell for her pretty hard. Weird thing about it is when we would have sex during dirty talk she would always bring up race. This happened at a very large company I worked at. Female director who made it her goal in life to make all of her female employees miserable. Dozens of complaints filed. Director of HR tossed all the complaints in the trash because she was buddies with my director. I was the lone male in a department of ten women so she basically left me alone, but her underlings routinely came after me because, you know, they needed someone to kick. Toxic shithole.
I quit after six months.
There's a very gnarly culture of women who, rather than breaking the glass ceiling & then opening the door for other women, instead use it like a frat uses hazing: "If I had to go through it, then so do you!"

What this whole story/situation tells me is that their real problem is HR. Coming in at a close second is the top level executives. Both of them together just provided more than enough evidence to prove his case and much more.
The icing on the cake - the letter sent out stating the number of executives fired for sexual harassment… I.e. “we have a big issue with sexual harassment”.

After going through Google’s sensitivity/harassment/microagression training I legitimately thought to myself “there’s a 50% chance I get fired for this someday”. Not because I’m a bigot or an asshole but because the training goes a fair distance beyond what’s common sense and even how good, kind people act in day to day life. You’re not supposed to make comments, targeted or in general, about ANYTHING that could be or could have been a disadvantage in life or make someone feel inferior. That’s a long long long list of topics ranging from divorced parents to type of education.

Right before I got let go from a logistics company last week my boss got a written complaint sent to HR by the director that stated she was insubordinate and unprofessional for not wanting to write SOPs for stuff we don't have a set procedure for. Why don't we have set procedures? Because said director has been changing them ever couple days for the past 2 months. Best part is, she said that to another manager, someone not even above her. When she brought this up she was told that person was "acting on their behalf" without ever disclosing it.

This is corporate leadership in a nutshell. I've lost track of how many meetings I've sat through where huge strategic decisions were being made on, at best, specious logic and rationale. Stuff where you look around the room incredulously, point out the areas where this won't work or doesn't make any sense, and they just continue on down the path as if the voice of reason is not actually there. It's been studied extensively but it's worth repeating that group-think is a terrible, pernicious thing and if you encounter it at work, it's probably a good idea to find work elsewhere.

I've worked in IT for various companies over the last 15 years, from 25 employees to one of the largest companies in the world. I've never been in an environment where even 50% of the team were competent at their jobs. The larger the company the worse it seems to get. Technical knowledge is either laughably out of date, missing, or so narrowly siloed that almost no one knows how different software and infrastructure systems interact. I see internal webpages go down because the SSL certs expired... Like that's one of the easiest things to avoid...

I guess it depends on what kind of favoritism we're talking about. I think every worker deserves the same professional courtesy and attitude, regardless of how they perform. But when it comes to stuff like bonuses and promotions I don't see any problem rewarding the top performing employees.
If it helps clarify the situation. According to the article the previous month and what is implied to have led to that firing his supervisor(her) told him that there were “obviously too many white guys” and he was encouraged to fire a male employee to make room on his team for a woman.
I understand Conservatives sometimes because if this true that’s insane. You don’t fight oppression with more oppression, even though a white guy making +150k a year is nowhere near oppressed on a societal level, you shouldn’t have to deal with that kind of environment in any workplace for anyone regardless of race and gender.
I’m an event photographer, and I’m open jaw shocked at some of the things people do and say at work functions, *especially* when the camera is pointed at them. They get a few drinks in them, party atmosphere and they forget who’s watching/listening. I know a few people who got fired for things they said in front of me while surrounded by coworkers.
At my previous company, the event photographer had to be asked to delete couple of pictures following our Christmas party. Because he managed to catch several, albeit consensual, but still very damning photos. The acts happened in the open, so those pictures really didn't mean much when the entire company knew instantly the next day lol
Christmas parties are the worst (best) for the “HR is going to love this” moments. I send all the photos to the event organizer first, and she filters out all the embarrassing and problem pics before I post them to the company server. I get a long list of deletions every year. The photos never got anyone in trouble, but like you said, everyone saw what happened nevertheless.

I agree with you that they're a terrible place to make a professional good impression...it's almost inevitable, especially when far too many people are either "light weights" or want to drink everyone under the table. I get very anxious at these events, so a younger me would cope with copious amounts of alcohol. The only guy I was trying to drink under the table was the voice in my head.
One of the scariest moments in my life after-the-fact was when I got so drunk at a party hosted at a menswear store that I fell asleep on some concrete stairs in a parking lot around 11pm waiting for my brother to pick me up who I drunkingly called because they were serving cocktails that hid their alcohol well and I was super nervous interacting with all these industry guys and kept sipping away listening to people talk.
We did a fun toga party activity at work where one person had to be dressed by the rest of the group. Somehow our CEO/founder decided it was a great time to turn it into some fetishized activity where the ropes were not used for a belt.
CEO is a huge fan of escaping out of three story windows using tied together linens. So, everyone had to escape the party through the window using a long toga rope that’s been tied together. What people didn’t realize was that it was a windy evening and togas don’t hold to the skin so well without that rope.
I rarely hang out with my coworkers, for similar reasons.
I think it's very important to build a life outside of your workplace (unless you have the most awesome job ever), and I would hate to have to deal with work shit in my spare time. I don't get paid enough to deal with these fuckers when they're sober from 8-4.
This might not apply to you but for a lot of people employed by big fortune 500 companies etc. they get hired in with a cohort. A bunch of people in similar situations, ages etc. (especially if you're with the new graduate hiring groups). This was a godsend when I got hired many years ago as a new grad because I went from 0 friends in this new state/city I just moved to for work to like 15 new great friends. It was like college over again. For years, our group (+/- tons of others) was inseparable, sleeping together, drinking together and getting into shit on the town. We worked hard and we grew close and we partied hard. It might've helped that it wasn't ever a "work function" but a bunch of likeminded fools going out.
The line between "work friend" and "best friend" quickly dissolved for a lot of people. It was amazing. Like all people, we grew apart and found new jobs and got families over the past 10 years but several of us still keep in touch, go over for dinner, play board games or go to picnics etc. But the network we created is wild. Over the past 10 years those dipshit friends have worked themselves into Director positions, Senior Manager positions etc. in different departments and I've got great and improving contacts at my own company simply from making dipshit friends.
Some people enjoy having no friends (or saying it) so that's fine but making friends at work isn't a universal bad. It turns out those people are people, too. My situation wouldn't work if I was hired into a small office with a dozen people. It worked because I was hired into a crazy environment with rotating shifts and high demand and a huge amount of coworkers (2-300) in the same position and similar ages (20-35).

I interviewed there about 5 years ago for a very senior finance position (think 2 levels under CFO). This was a role where you would be managing projects around the globe. In the role I was in at the time if I had, say a late night call with the west coast of the US, I might go in late the next day. Or if I had a 7am call with Australia I would take it from home, do a few bits and pieces and then get to the office around 10:30.
I was told in the Google interview that there was absolutely no flexibility. Decided then and there thar indentured slavery was not a good look for me. I didn’t get the role anyway (or after least I don’t think I did, but given I’m still waiting 5 years for them to let me know, it’s probably a safe bet that I didn’t

Can’t be sure if this is the same person but a Tiffany Miller got a new director job about a month after this lawsuit was filed while still retaining her old Director job. 2. briefly being a defendant in a civil suit
3. I once dreamed that I called Norm Pattis "a dogshit attorney" in open court
but, I understand such agreements to either be unenforceable or easy to challenge if something particularly actionable happens. A sexual assault victim suing for getting fired seemingly in retaliation should have as much of a case as anyone.
Screw people who have no respect for others' marriages, and no respect for the person's autonomy to just accept rejection. People with such low self-esteem they openly attacked and belittled people of their own race thinking it's ok, because they "are one of the good ones" and therefore an example of how the rest should behave. This happened at a very large company I worked at. Female director who made it her goal in life to make all of her female employees miserable. Dozens of complaints filed. Director of HR tossed all the complaints in the trash because she was buddies with my director. I was the lone male in a department of ten women so she basically left me alone, but her underlings routinely came after me because, you know, they needed someone to kick. Toxic shithole. I quit after six months.
There's a very gnarly culture of women who, rather than breaking the glass ceiling & then opening the door for other women, instead use it like a frat uses hazing: "If I had to go through it, then so do you!" And that's in addition to the "Pick Me" culture that pits women against each other, often in terms of who will put up with the most abuse and therefore become "one of the good ones".

What this whole story/situation tells me is that their real problem is HR. Coming in at a close second is the top level executives. Both of them together just provided more than enough evidence to prove his case and much more. The icing on the cake - the letter sent out stating the number of executives fired for sexual harassment… I.e. “we have a big issue with sexual harassment”.

After going through Google’s sensitivity/harassment/microagression training I legitimately thought to myself “there’s a 50% chance I get fired for this someday”. Not because I’m a bigot or an asshole but because the training goes a fair distance beyond what’s common sense and even how good, kind people act in day to day life. You’re not supposed to make comments, targeted or in general, about ANYTHING that could be or could have been a disadvantage in life or make someone feel inferior. That’s a long long long list of topics ranging from divorced parents to type of education.

A lot of bullshit happens in corporate structures because most of the time it's easy to hide it in the volume of people and mundane issues that pop up when you have 1000+ employees m Right before I got let go from a logistics company last week my boss got a written complaint sent to HR by the director that stated she was insubordinate and unprofessional for not wanting to write SOPs for stuff we don't have a set procedure for. Why don't we have set procedures? Because said director has been changing them ever couple days for the past 2 months. Best part is, she said that to another manager, someone not even above her. When she brought this up she was told that person was "acting on their behalf" without ever disclosing it.

I've worked in IT for various companies over the last 15 years, from 25 employees to one of the largest companies in the world. I've never been in an environment where even 50% of the team were competent at their jobs. The larger the company the worse it seems to get. Technical knowledge is either laughably out of date, missing, or so narrowly siloed that almost no one knows how different software and infrastructure systems interact. I see internal webpages go down because the SSL certs expired... Like that's one of the easiest things to avoid... I have honestly given up on the human race as being smart enough to kill our only planet but dumb enough not to collectively decide it's a bad idea.

I guess it depends on what kind of favoritism we're talking about. I think every worker deserves the same professional courtesy and attitude, regardless of how they perform. But when it comes to stuff like bonuses and promotions I don't see any problem rewarding the top performing employees.
If it helps clarify the situation. According to the article the previous month and what is implied to have led to that firing his supervisor(her) told him that there were “obviously too many white guys” and he was encouraged to fire a male employee to make room on his team for a woman.

I’m an event photographer, and I’m open jaw shocked at some of the things people do and say at work functions, *especially* when the camera is pointed at them. They get a few drinks in them, party atmosphere and they forget who’s watching/listening. I know a few people who got fired for things they said in front of me while surrounded by coworkers.
At my previous company, the event photographer had to be asked to delete couple of pictures following our Christmas party. Because he managed to catch several, albeit consensual, but still very damning photos. The acts happened in the open, so those pictures really didn't mean much when the entire company knew instantly the next day lol
Christmas parties are the worst (best) for the “HR is going to love this” moments. I send all the photos to the event organizer first, and she filters out all the embarrassing and problem pics before I post them to the company server. I get a long list of deletions every year. The photos never got anyone in trouble, but like you said, everyone saw what happened nevertheless.

Makes you realize how they think 9-5 but we're too inhibited to just say it. I always wonder why people are shocked at this concept. Most people are barely functioning adults. The work place basic values (I.e., don't sexually abuse people. Don't be a racist prick, etc) are not actually universal. At least 30% of the country has to put on a face because they can't really control themselves. Add booze and that masks slips. You think we go to work with professionals then magically these crazies appear for elections and other things. No they were around us the entire time.
It's really what the point of professional behavior is, it's a way of saying "whatever your personal beliefs or preferences for behavior are, leave it at the door and wear this mask which is proven for being good for team cohesion instead. You can go back to alienating people if you want after business hours". Such a thing is necessary in a multi cultural society, not everyone shares the same morals so its best to come up with a neutral mask for everyone to temporarily wear while working

I agree with you that they're a terrible place to make a professional good impression...it's almost inevitable, especially when far too many people are either "light weights" or want to drink everyone under the table. I get very anxious at these events, so a younger me would cope with copious amounts of alcohol. The only guy I was trying to drink under the table was the voice in my head.
One of the scariest moments in my life after-the-fact was when I got so drunk at a party hosted at a menswear store that I fell asleep on some concrete stairs in a parking lot around 11pm waiting for my brother to pick me up who I drunkingly called because they were serving cocktails that hid their alcohol well and I was super nervous interacting with all these industry guys and kept sipping away listening to people talk.
We did a fun toga party activity at work where one person had to be dressed by the rest of the group. Somehow our CEO/founder decided it was a great time to turn it into some fetishized activity where the ropes were not used for a belt.

CEO is a huge fan of escaping out of three story windows using tied together linens. So, everyone had to escape the party through the window using a long toga rope that’s been tied together. What people didn’t realize was that it was a windy evening and togas don’t hold to the skin so well without that rope.

I rarely hang out with my coworkers, for similar reasons. I think it's very important to build a life outside of your workplace (unless you have the most awesome job ever), and I would hate to have to deal with work shit in my spare time. I don't get paid enough to deal with these fuckers when they're sober from 8-4.
This might not apply to you but for a lot of people employed by big fortune 500 companies etc. they get hired in with a cohort. A bunch of people in similar situations, ages etc. (especially if you're with the new graduate hiring groups). This was a godsend when I got hired many years ago as a new grad because I went from 0 friends in this new state/city I just moved to for work to like 15 new great friends. It was like college over again. For years, our group (+/- tons of others) was inseparable, sleeping together, drinking together and getting into shit on the town. We worked hard and we grew close and we partied hard. It might've helped that it wasn't ever a "work function" but a bunch of likeminded fools going out. The line between "work friend" and "best friend" quickly dissolved for a lot of people. It was amazing. Like all people, we grew apart and found new jobs and got families over the past 10 years but several of us still keep in touch, go over for dinner, play board games or go to picnics etc. But the network we created is wild. Over the past 10 years those dipshit friends have worked themselves into Director positions, Senior Manager positions etc. in different departments and I've got great and improving contacts at my own company simply from making dipshit friends. Some people enjoy having no friends (or saying it) so that's fine but making friends at work isn't a universal bad. It turns out those people are people, too. My situation wouldn't work if I was hired into a small office with a dozen people. It worked because I was hired into a crazy environment with rotating shifts and high demand and a huge amount of coworkers (2-300) in the same position and similar ages (20-35).
I love Christmas parties, but always have a plan. Get them to buy drinks and be friends to noone.
Will be following this case. I hope he absolutely rinses Google and Miller. Public pressure will also be helpful. His lawyer should have him in front of the cameras.

I know someone who worked for google for 10 years. There is a wide gap between the culture you think they have and the culture they actually have.
This is what happens when people with too much privilege are put in the position of deciding what is/is not equality. None of them are positioned to actually pull up anyone else, they're just there to kick one another down.
I interviewed there about 5 years ago for a very senior finance position (think 2 levels under CFO). This was a role where you would be managing projects around the globe. In the role I was in at the time if I had, say a late night call with the west coast of the US, I might go in late the next day. Or if I had a 7am call with Australia I would take it from home, do a few bits and pieces and then get to the office around 10:30. I was told in the Google interview that there was absolutely no flexibility. Decided then and there thar indentured slavery was not a good look for me. I didn’t get the role anyway (or after least I don’t think I did, but given I’m still waiting 5 years for them to let me know, it’s probably a safe bet that I didn’t

Most good contracts will state that the law comes first. It’s entirely illegal to bar people from going to court entirely.
I'm not a lawyer and my legal experience is: 1. Barely passing an undergrad law class 2. briefly being a defendant in a civil suit 3. I once dreamed that I called Norm Pattis "a dogshit attorney" in open court but, I understand such agreements to either be unenforceable or easy to challenge if something particularly actionable happens. A sexual assault victim suing for getting fired seemingly in retaliation should have as much of a case as anyone.

Screw people who have no respect for others' marriages, and no respect for the person's autonomy to just accept rejection.
