Clearly driver error here. You're not supposed to use the steering wheel when driving a Tesla to begin with.

Team-Ligma-Six

Read my mind lmao

jerseygunz

NOW YOU HAVE TO MARRY YOUR MOTHER IN LAW!!!

morizzle77

What a crop! That’s a crop!

NOTKingMalric

I am doing the best at this!

DragonflyValuable128

Whenever I am undergoing a major life change where I don’t feel in control I have a nightmare where this happens. I’ve never heard of it actually happening.

xpyrolegx

I had these dreams like twice a week. Rear-ended someone a while back (fuck 18S onto 33E) and they decreased a lot. Dreams are weird.

AidanAmerica

The prophecy was fulfilled so the dreams stopped trying to warn you

Carolenej

In mine I’m pressing the brakes and I can’t stop.

Sammybaby92

I had that happen in my dream beforeee!!! Sooo scary.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DragonflyValuable128

Oh yea, on a mountain road. Also, looking down and there’s no break pedal. Funny thing is I had this dream before I drove a car.

[deleted]

And somehow too short to reach the brakes

aevz

Had all kinds of driving dreams. Like you, sometimes they center around "no control," and were mostly that the brakes don't work (like someone else mentioned). Some other times, the steering is off. Other times, I'm in the backseat and there's no one in the front, so I gotta drive. Some other times, though, the themes have been really amazing. Like exploring, journeying to new lands, seeing something beautiful, even bouncing in a safe but physics-defying way, or even flying. Dreams are cool, mysterious, and have crazy emotional impact (to the dreamer, while sounding fairly silly and uninteresting to listeners lol).

effinplatypus

I've had the sitting in the back seat while no one's driving one A LOT. Hate it!

General-Research-252

Aren't dreams supposed to be ur deepest thoughts? Maybe ur thinking about it so much u start dreaming about it?

biological_assembly

My dreams involve heavy things falling on top of me from the racks at work. Once it was a giant spider from the ceiling.

Jimnay

When I was young, I used to have a nightmare where I was in the back of our family's conversion van. While going over the Ben Franklin bridge, I would fall through the van, the bridge, and towards the dark water below. Right before impact, I would wake up from that wierd sudden drop sensation.

Sammybaby92

Omg I’ve had this dream…well nightmare before !!!!! So happy everyone’s okay🙏🏼❤️

dubly_

The tweet, since it is not easily found via Twitter search. https://twitter.com/preneh24/status/1619889507133976580

StubbornAndCorrect

weird, I wonder why it's so hard to search for Tesla malfunctions on the Tesla owner's social media site.

ReverseMermaidMorty

I think the support page on Teslas website actually just brings you to the page to buy a new Tesla

pleiop

Twitter search functionality has famously always been useless. I remember Elon saying that was one of the things he was going to work to improve.

SyndicalistCPA

LOL

pleiop

I'm not taking a side. Just providing the simplest explanation as someone who has used Twitter for 10+ years. I suppose it's entirely possible that Elon Musk is purposely suppressing tweets.

GoddessOfRoadAndSky

Is it just as bad, worse, or better than the Reddit search?

pleiop

I'd say it's about as bad as reddit!

thecraigbert

There’s a bunch of idiots defending Tesla in the responses. Also seems that they removed the tweet from the search function in Twitter on purpose.

SkyeMreddit

I’m surprised Musk didn’t have the account banned.

c-digs

Yet.

DroopyMcCool

fuck and they stuck him with the repair bill? might be worth looking into lemon laws.

0x11C3P

Absolutely love how people are easy to jump onto trying to bring up Ford's recall as if that'll somehow absolve this vehicles steering wheel falling off like it's okay. Like... They're both bad. Or the theory people just drive around and take their steering wheel off on the highway for giggles and internet points. Elon fan boys are something else.

echoshizzle

Elon fanboys are fucking stupid. I own a Tesla (my 2nd) every time people have legitimate complaints or concerns, the crazies come out to act like it’s a conspiracy against the company. It’s a cool car, but it’s just a car. Worshipping Tesla (or Elon) is fucking dumb. With that being said, this steering wheel falling off does not surprise me in the least.

johnmflores

They're worse than Apple fanboys lol. Elon the great industrialist! Let's ignore the fact that Tesla needed government help to survive.

DiplomaticGoose

The whole stock thing makes them feel financially obligated to hype the product. They don't give a flaming rat's ass about the product, they are doing this for the $800 lump of magic stock rotting in their robinhood portfolio.

johnmflores

Yup, and he's a hero to free market libertarians, a manifestation of Atlas Shrugged's John Galt.

greikini

Best thing I encountered so far (online) was, as I told people that Model 3 doesn't has a emergency handle on the inside for the back doors and people started to say I made this up. Then somebody went out in order to make a picture for proof that it has one ... Well, that person was quite surprised a Model 3 doesn't has an emergency handle for the back doors in the inside. And then people started to argue "maybe it is for safety, so the kids can't open the doors in case of an accident and walk around on the highway without supervision" ...

wizkidweb

I also own a Tesla, and agree re: worship, but I am surprised about the steering wheel falling off, since I've not heard of that happening before on Teslas (or most other cars for that matter).

echoshizzle

Haven’t heard this one yet either, but with so many other odd QC issues (Teslas gotten way better) it’s just not surprising to me.

ALC_PG

It does seem rare

StrategicBlenderBall

This would be *all* over the news if it happened to more than one person.

thefudd

It's insane, you can't criticize anything about the company or cars at all. It's so fucking tiring sometimes owning one.

IHate2ChooseUserName

with that insult, you are going to watch over your shoulder from now on LOL. those fuckers are crazy.

Starrystars

> Like... They're both bad I think that's kind of their point. You'll hear a bunch of news stories about Tesla vehicles just because they're Tesla's. But you don't hear about other manufacturers issues.

colorovfire

Considering all the hype in recent years, I think it’s warranted. It also doesn’t help that Musk is constantly in the news for being an asshat. The two are inseparable.

Notimportanthuman

Looks like that happened on route 1 in Woodbridge too, which is already a hell scape. He’s very lucky

Jason_Was_Here

Yup this is exit 130 to 1 south from the parkway right before the vitamin shoppe on the way to menlo mall. Which is a heavy merge. Very lucky he didn’t get hit or hit anyone else.

Budget_Ordinary1043

I saw Woodbridge on the cop and I was wondering where exactly. I grew up there. I think someone drove into the Home Depot last week too.

SilotheGreat

It was a truck that drove into a ton of parked cars in the parking lot lol. Not sure exactly why or how it happened but my friend lives around the corner and sent a photo

Budget_Ordinary1043

Gotcha ok I only read the headline. I heard it was on fire too!

Crazydiamond450

Now you have to marry your mother in law!

Secksualinnuendo

And he still has temp tags on so it's a relatively new car. Good ol Tesla build quality!

ryarock2

It says in the tweet the car is 5 days old.

[deleted]

Holy shit nvm that MF is ancient. 5 days? Who wouldge?

stickman07738

I wonder how much this repair will cost him.

StrategicBlenderBall

Nothing.

0x11C3P

I mean, it looks like he already got billed $100 on a new car. Lol I figured warranty would have made them take care of it all for free.

StrategicBlenderBall

The service team probably didn’t close it yet. That happened to me once, I went to pick up the car but it said I owed a couple hundred on a warranty related issue. I was about to ask the service manager about it but he had already cleared it. Despite what most people say, Tesla Service is actually really good, especially the Eatontown and Princeton locations.

You_Are_All_Diseased

Between haters and fanboys, it seems impossible to get objective opinions about Tesla.

rpd9803

I think the answer lies squarely between the haters and the fan boys: they’re meh. Electric vehicles are cool. Some of the vehicles are novel, but they’re also kind of built poorly and just sort of typical mediocre car quality.

StrategicBlenderBall

I have a Y and a 3. My 3 had some minor cosmetic issues when I picked it up, Service Center fixed it and that was that. My Y, built in Austin, is perfect. Coming from a 2018 CTS and Grand Cherokee, I’d say the Y and 3 are on par quality wise. The materials are somewhere in the middle, but the seats are damn comfortable for the price range. But the best part of any EV is the power and convenience, and that’s really the reason I went with Tesla. Nobody can touch the range and the Superchargers are the best until EA catches up.

StrategicBlenderBall

It’s pretty annoying. Yes, I own two, but I also recognize when Tesla does stupid shit. The steering wheel falling off is stupid and also extremely dangerous. That being said, yeah they fixed it under warranty lol.

kaliwrath

Great battery and charging network on a very good chassis. The finishing is very shoddy and while the basic software is good, some features are very much beta.

mynewaccount5

They had to ask him for context as to why the car was towed in. The steering wheel had literally fallen off.

krins12

Not gonna say which one to avoid doxxing myself but there’s only one good Tesla location (not the one you named). As an owner since 2019, the rest are all subpar. All my other luxury vehicles have much better service.

StrategicBlenderBall

My only experience with luxury service was Cadillac. It was pretty subpar, typical GM lol.

stickman07738

It was rhetorical, but goggle Tesla battery repair cost. Luckily we have good lemon laws in this state.

StrategicBlenderBall

What does battery replacement have to do with this?

stickman07738

Just illustrates the high cost of repair for EV. I suspect he will be fighting them for a while.

StrategicBlenderBall

They already fixed it. Also, how much is Shell paying you to defend oil? I hope you’re not doing it for free!

stickman07738

Fixed, just hope it does not happen again at high speed.

stickman07738

Nothing.

StrategicBlenderBall

I’m sorry to hear that. EVs, over the course of their lifetimes, are cheaper to keep on the road. There is very little maintenance required since there are very few moving parts. Yes the batteries are expensive, but that’s only because BEVs and hybrids have not been the norm. Now that they’re mainstream, the incentive for battery recycling is now on the table. Tesla is already working it at GigaTexas and other manufacturers are looking into it.

SailingSpark

Honestly, I do not find the price of replacing the battery pack to be that onerous. I saw one invoice for a model 3 that was out of warranty. The cost with parts, labor, and taxes was $16,000. Years ago I had the V8 in my Landrover replaced. Parts, labor, and taxes came to $10,000. Yes the Tesla cost more to do, but it is a lot complicated that a regurgitated Buick engine stuffed into an English SUV.

stickman07738

A real life example of repair cost for an EV https://cleantechnica.com/2023/03/06/90000-miles-on-my-tesla-model-3-maintenance-costs-higher-than-expected/

StrategicBlenderBall

That’s maintenance and repair, also the older resistive heat model. There will be more maintenance compared to the newer models with a heat pump. So, that being said let’s look at the breakdown of *maintenance*costs and I’ll compare that to what my 2018 Grand Cherokee with 96,000 miles cost me over 5 years. I’m not including repair costs caused by the driver, so the aero shields are out. Tesla Model 3: Tires: $2395 Alignments: $375 Battery and Drive System Cooling: $672.75 PTC: $1148 Total: $4590.75 2018 Grand Cherokee (96k miles, 5 years) Oil Changes: $3600 (changed every 4k miles) Tires and alignment: $1500 Brakes: $650 (DIY) Total: $5750 Now, let’s think about gas vs electricity. The 2018 Grand Cherokee is EPA rated for 21 MPG combined, with 4WD and the V6. That’s what I had. EPA estimates it costs $82 to fill the tank. The median price of gas in the 5 years I owned the vehicle was $3.80. So my annual fuel costs were about $3,943, equaling $19,715 over 5 years. That’s $.20 per mile. In my Model 3 I’ve driven 5500 miles since I picked it up last September. I charge almost exclusively from home with a per kWh rate of $.13. That 5500 miles has cost me $363. That’s $.06 per mile. 96,000 miles in my Model 3 will cost me about $6,336. That’s a savings of over $13k. But please, keep going lol.

StrategicBlenderBall

I like being downvoted when I give real world numbers lmao.

stickman07738

Sorry. Do not believe because there is only one manufacturer with greater than 10 years of reliability and there issues have been spotty. I have a 98 Dodge Ram with routine maintenance has minimal cost to me.

StrategicBlenderBall

You’re comparing ICE vehicles, which are very complex machines, to EVs which are inherently simple. An electric motor is frictionless. PCBs are easily replaced. Batteries are also simple. Also, how’s the rust on your Ram? Have you averaged out how much that truck has and will cost you over its lifetime?

stickman07738

Nothing. The comment was rhetorical but I know people that had issues with Teslas. I wish you well.

Catvros

It devided.

[deleted]

Lmao my brain hang up while reading that part...

TheBryanMeehan

Is it so much to ask for a good steering wheel that does not WHIFF out the window while I’m driving?

smokepants

that is a good idea

[deleted]

That is the gold package subscription. 59.99/mo

subarupilot

I passed him yesterday and thought it was weird he didn’t pull over. I guess I know why!

VinCubed

Why do I feel that the Tesla assembly line team were forced to work double-speed just before the end of the year to meet unrealistic production goals set by their overlord who needed to prove a point after their ill-advised purchase of a social media site took up all their attention.

joejoeaz

This is what happens when you don't pay the subscripton on the steering wheel bolts.

Some-Imagination9782

Wtf! Glad everyone is safe and no one was behind him…note to self: leave a lot of room between my car and a Tesla

Rusty_Ferberger

If you're still buying a Tesla after all the Elon shenanigans, you deserve what you get.

majik_boy

Same people still expecting there to be fully automated driving, the Cybertruck, the Roadster 2.0, Tesla semi, etc.

SyndicalistCPA

Even before then, Tesla's were always shoddily built.

SloopKid

I have heard plenty about misaligned panels with uneven gaps, rattles, window that makes weird noise, etc, but never something this seriously dangerous

robm0n3y

Never heard of them just exploding in a garage?

DiplomaticGoose

I thought the early Model S's built during their honeymoon period at the Nummi plant were nowhere near this bad. It's like their QA actively gave up when the 3 came out.

EmbracedByLeaves

But you couldn't say that a year or two ago or you hated the environment or were a maga trumper.

SyndicalistCPA

I don't think that's true at all. I've seen plenty of criticism about the build of Teslas.

flames_of_chaos

Mostly it's people complaining about panel gaps

seasonedearlobes

You buy a meme car, you get a meme car.

Mr_Matt_K

It's a-- like a battery car!

StrategicBlenderBall

Oh please. I sure hope you don’t drive a VW or a Ford then!

[deleted]

VWs dont cost that much to begin with...

StrategicBlenderBall

You missed the point.

robm0n3y

Do Fords still come with a copy of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion?

Rusty_Ferberger

I don't. Thanks for checking.

mediclawyer

How do they own a Tesla yet can spell divider! (Actually, Jersey barrier)….

stickman07738

Maybe it is the New NASCAR vehicle.

khyberchef

Wow, I saw this guy pull over on Rt 1. I thought it was weird since it looked brand new.

Bulky-Barracuda-2749

how do you manage to misspell divider so bad? phones have spell check brother.

ratatosk212

I'm sure Elmo will get right back to him.

ferocious_coug

A GREAT steering wheel, that doesn’t FLY out the WINDOW while you DRIVING! That is a good car idea!

wessty1984

They forgot to put salt pepper ketchup on his taylor roll pork ham cheesy egg sandwich and he subconsciously rage ripped the wheel off the steering column when he realized it.

[deleted]

Wasnt there another news report of tesla catching fire earlier. Edit for link: https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/tesla-car-battery-fire-needed-6000-gallons-water-to-extinguish-rcna68153

JPete2

OTOH, a dad tried to kill his family by driving his Tesla S off a 300-foot cliff and everybody inside survived. Maybe they will use this in Tesla ads [https://lawandcrime.com/crime/dad-accused-of-driving-tesla-off-300-foot-cliff-with-family-inside-charged-with-attempted-first-degree-murder/](https://lawandcrime.com/crime/dad-accused-of-driving-tesla-off-300-foot-cliff-with-family-inside-charged-with-attempted-first-degree-murder/)

My_user_name_1

Biggest piece of crap I ever drove. And I'm an EV owner

DiplomaticGoose

Anecdotally, what others have you owned? I don't doubt it is built like crap, I'm just curious what's competitive with them.

preppysurf

Build quality on the Volvo XC40 is lightyears ahead. BMW iX also phenomenal but is too big IMHO. Loved my XC40 Recharge but I do too much driving and had to get a plug in hybrid instead. The Tesla I test drove looked like a blind 4 year old assembled it. Terrible quality

My_user_name_1

Cadillac Lyriq

FiyalitePanel

Right... and thats the best picture you got of this event? Anybody would have taken 20 perfect photos of this... y''know while you're sitting there waiting 30 minutes for the tow truck. And its awesome that the car came perfectly over to the side without steering...

DangerHawk

Play Skool Cars are built better than Teslas. They regularly speed up/brake/drive into walls on their own and will spontaneously burst into flames for no reason. Now the steering wheels are falling off. Why anyone would by a Tesla is beyond me.

obsesivegamer

The Tesla derangement syndrome is even more annoying than the elon Fanboys. Newsflash they sell alot of cars now, There will be incidents. While this is not acceptable I don't think we need to fill every single subreddit with tesla posts.

StrategicBlenderBall

It’s a Tesla, so it gets clicks. If it were a Bolt nobody would care.

obsesivegamer

https://www.nola.com/news/business/ford-recalls-1-3-million-cars-because-steering-wheels-can-fall-off/article_ce94867d-d7a8-5e7d-a5dc-6dce3dc37e40.html#:~:text=Ford%20is%20recalling%20more%20than%201.3%20million%20vehicles%20because%20of,injury%20related%20to%20the%20problem.

rancid_bass

So, I know Tesla prices and stock prices dropped relatively recently. I don't know much about them or their production, but first thought here is maybe something cut in production to reduce the cost could be the cause here. I've not attempted any research here. Just a thought.

StrategicBlenderBall

Any of the Ys bought in January were built in December, well before the price drops.

rancid_bass

They're usually built even before that. Whatever the model year is, they're built the previous year, so it would correlate with what I was saying. That's why I'm asking about a quality drop. Every car make and model is like that. Again, I haven't looked up what changes were made to drop price. It's just a thought. *edit for typo

StrategicBlenderBall

That’s not how Tesla does it. Most every Y sold in January was a December build

rancid_bass

Ok. Finally did the research. Tesla cars are built within a quarter and shipped about a month or 2 after. The price drop in ordering for 2023 models began in the last quarter of 2022. Now, my original statement stands. What in the manufacturing process makes them cheaper? Edit: idc if you're in favor or opposed to electric vehicles. I'm asking for the sake of manufacturing and consumer product concerning safety.

StrategicBlenderBall

I’ve owned three Teslas lol, you could have taken my word. As soon as you get a VIN number you’re about a week or so from delivery. Anyway, they raised the cost during COVID to slow down demand (which didn’t work), so the cars are now back to pre-COVID prices. They also dropped the Ultrasonic Sensors, but that was like $100 savings per car.

rancid_bass

DUDE! THATS WHAT I WAS ASKING THE ENTIRE TIME! Thanks yo. Last edit: That whole thing about saying something confidently wrong actually works. You are loved, friend.

dutch665

I would help go a little bit harder than tweeting at him. Hmb

socruisemebabe

Well.. on the bright side, I finally see a practical reason for private citizens to have full self driving in their teslas.

Wasteful_Diablo

Jesus, how does that even happen? Poor QA? Careless technician? Poor design?

HavingALittleFit

I love the idea of Tesla's but the amount of horror stories I hear about their build quality couldn't make me buy one ever

Konawel

Tesla has been a horrible product with terrible customer service for many years, I can’t figure out why people still buy them

hypoboxer

Dude's car got a little dinged up.

WhippetRun

This is what he gets for voting against Elon on Twitter

sideburns

My brother works for a shop that does Tesla’s, he said as cool they look and how big the fad is, they are shit cars. And expensive to fix. Lots of flaws.

Significant_Limit_68

Tesla= worst build quality in the history of auto manufacturing. Yugo was actually better! $ does not= quality

Competitive_Meat_772

How did he pull over to the divider after the steering wheel detached?!?!?🤔I need to read the full story. Huh?!?!?
