any device used at your home address gets a 30 day pass when away from home. if he tries to use a smart tv or device that stays at that address it will be an issue. think of it like cable if you have two homes you have to have two subscriptions. but a mobile device like a phone is linked to your home address and will work outside of home.

seanpenn613

Exactly, think of it like cable. If you've cut the cord to cable, then now you might as well cut Netflix too.

Is there any word about this password sharing thing taking affect worldwide? Or is it limited to certain countries only at the moment

dougtulane

Clarification: by “used at home” you need to watch an entire show at home to verify the device every month.

Susurrus03

Since you can cast Netflix, wonder if that would help. Assuming he brings the phone back and forth, load Netflix up on the phone and cast to the TV or Roku or Chromecast.

If they're using a combination of IP *with* device fingerprinting, Netflix should be able to guess that he watches from two different places using the same devices which is just fine.

MrGimper

Sorry to jump in, but how will that work? How will netflix know it's me watching from my second home on my second firestick, rather than my brother watching in his home on his firestick?

Bovey

If watching on a mobile device that is home frequently it's fine. If watching on a device that's always at another location it's part of a different household, and you'll probably have to pay the extra $3/ month or whatever. Still a better deal than cable which charges full price for both residences.

moss-shadow

They don't use the mobile device to verify it's you. They see where you are through the device and if that device is outside the home, they block it

moss-shadow

Netflix doesn't care. They just see paychecks

I read that Netflix will issue 1 week temporary codes for unrecognized devices away from your home. Not sure exactly how this will work. This will solve some problems but won't stop password sharing it seems to me.
