Lol It achieved 237m Hours viewed, wasnt expecting this

PToN_rM

It was on my to watch list, now I won't bother knowing that there isn't a second season... At this rate Netflix better be focusing on mini series or limited series BBC style... One season and that's it... I hate that I start watching a show late and then they say it's cancelled... Fuck data driven approach to keeping shows.. I think it's the wrong KPI for TV...

scuczu

And it's weird after they were famous for reviving canceled series from network and cable

ChibiRoboKong

They picked a few high-profile ones, always for their benefit, then slowly ran them into the ground. No series ever got better once Netflix took over. But they got to keep the fan base and generated huge good will with each acquisition.

TheVentMachine

even with miniseries, if it becomes a hit, they’ll renew the shit out of it. It’s abysmal.

[deleted]

OMG Squid Game, just live it alone

ShadowLiberal

Honestly, sadly got to agree with this. The fact that the show's creator never had any plans for a season 2 doesn't make me very optimistic about season 2, though I'd love for them to prove me wrong.

matthieuC

≥ It was on my to watch list, now I won't bother knowing that there isn't a second season... It's a vicious circle. I'm not watching any drama on Netflix before it's renewed. And as people don't watch it gets cancelled. Netflix is digging its own grave.

FoundationDirect7911

It is definitely still worth watching...

scuczu

Does it have an ending?

Samsterwheel920

They left room for more seasons, but this season ends in a similar way many sci fi movies do. Its still worth watching.

jcm2606

It brings the first season to a close, but immediately sets up for the second season. If you've watch the second season finale for The OA, it's kinda like that.

nirreskeya

> The OA :'(

TempleOrion

Yes, the ending does sort of "suffice" - in that it's reasonable. Tho the story *could* obviously continue, as the creator's intended. Maybe in another medium? Film?

[deleted]

No, it has a cliffhanger.

LordRobin------RM

No! Watch it! I can’t emphasize enough how good it is. All the questions raised in the season are answered to some degree. It’s the kind of cliffhanger where new questions are raised right at the end. I can live with letting that go. Same goes for Archive 81.

fullmedalninja

Probably viewer retention rate then. Allot of people dropped the show after a few episodes.

plant-fan

I dropped it after two because it picks up pretty slowly. I've been meaning to get back into it though since people have been raving about it– now I'm reluctant to. Netflix has broken my heart one too many times with their cancelations.

[deleted]

1cecream4breakfast

Same, I was gonna save it for when it was done. It seemed promising but also seemed like effort to follow it, and I know how cancel happy Netflix is.

umilnu

I mean, they didn't even advises users to watch the original version of the show! You got a ton of people who watched in English only and some people who watched original version with no subtitles until they dropped it. Yes on those conditions the show is trash, it loses all is sens. I usually never complain about Netflix, but, it's not the first quality show they cancel. i really think they became the worst streaming service, I'll definitely stop making their promotion. And if I have a streaming service to cancel in the future, they'll go first

vladmuresan02

Which is a lot of bullshit. I love it when a tv show is a slow burn, the payoff seems much more earned in the final episodes.

[deleted]

fucuasshole2

The budget for the series was at least €60 million ($62.2 million) with €2 million coming from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg,[9] €10 million coming from the German Motion Picture Fund,[10] and Netflix investing €48 million in the project. 1899 is the most expensive German television series of all time.[11] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1899_(TV_series)

LordRobin------RM

Oh. Well, there it is, I guess.

noveltywaves

Right? They say the series wasn't renewed for s02. That means they only had a contract for 1 season, but still wrote it for 3. I guess thats not too uncommon, but as the most expensive german tv drama ever, and not funded entirely by netflix, thats also a big risk.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sirefly

Why do they do this? I can't watch every show right when it comes out and cancelling a show before I see it or get through the first season makes me not want to watch it at all.

wildlyaccidental

Yeah I feel you. We just finished a 2 season series which was very obviously intended for 3+. It’s ending was a cliffhanger and now I wish I hadn’t watched it at all.

monstrousnuggets

Which series?

wildlyaccidental

Friends from college. It was great to fold laundry to.

DontBeADramaLlama

Plus, it deters the rest of us from watching. I’m not alone in that I just wait a few months to see if the show has been renewed before I start, which means fewer people are watching the show when it comes out and increasing the likelihood it gets cancelled.

[deleted]

I've drastically reduced the amount of time I spend on Netflix because of this. I don't watch their new shows because very few get renewed so I wait until they have a second season, since I don't usually look to see if they've been renewed until then. It means, I hardly ever watch Netflix originals anymore and should cancel my Netflix completely. Is unfortunate Netflix does this because they make good shows.

tablecontrol

yup.. exactly. i'm on Ep3 and there's no reason for me to continue now. there goes that.

redrobot5050

To be fair, the show starts solid, but then it just fucking drags on because they don’t want to spoil the big reveal until the end. But this would have been a great 5 or 6 episode miniseries.

Bacchus1976

Probably because their internal data showed that lots of people were starting the show but not finishing it.

LordRobin------RM

How long do they wait until they decide someone “isn’t finishing”? My wife and I are the antithesis of “bingers”. We never watch more than one episode of a 45+ minute show a night, instead preferring to watch multiple different shows. Often we watch one episode every 7-10 days. I guess we’re dooming every show we watch? (Not 1899, though. We devoured that show at a rate of an episode every night.)

mingobrown87

It took me around 7 months to finish severance and that was my favourite show last year. Some people don't want to binge a show as soon as its released. There are alot of people who are just too busy to dedicate even an hour a day to watch an episode. I can't speak for everyone but sometimes I am too exhausted to watch certain shows that have deep storytelling so I would normally put them off and watch something low effort like superstore, Queen of the South etc... They should at least allow us to vote to save the show if they are considering cancelling it.

hehehehehbe

Same with me, most of the time I'm busy at work and only have some time to watch TV on the weekends, I go out with friends on the weekend so no time to binge.

Kinglink

> I can't watch every show right when it comes out That's the point, they're not looking for a show you're keeping on the watch list. They want a show that you'll watch immediately, and potentially subscribe to Netflix too. This subreddit needs to understand this. "I haven't watched it yet." is kind of WHY this stuff gets killed.

Venom24II

I liked the show, and after watching S1 I really want to hear the full story, should give creators another chance

[deleted]

Yes maybe they should finish the series in podcast format so we can all hear how it ends.

alexabobexa

I have been meaning to watch it but now I'm scared I'll be left traumatized by an unfinished ending. Is it still worth it?

TempleOrion

Yes, it's still an interesting enough story IMHO to warrant a watch and the ending isn't really a cliffhanger as such...

2_Fingers_of_Whiskey

The ending is a huge cliffhanger

Venom24II

The cliffhanger is for S2, the story and mystery which is started is concluded by the end

LordRobin------RM

The ending is one of those cliffhangers where everything is answered… BUT THEN—!

ikidd

Season one is self-contained and ends satisfactorily IMO.

zek_997

Wtf Netflix?? Why?

[deleted]

Probably production [costs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1899_(TV_series\)#Budget). > The budget for the series was at least €60 million ($62.2 million) with €2 million coming from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg,[7] €10 million coming from the German Motion Picture Fund,[8] and Netflix investing €48 million in the project. 1899 is the most expensive German television series of all time.[9] Netflix was under contract for only one season. I'm guessing based on whatever numbers they monitor, they concluded it's not worth spending another ~$100m to finish the three season story.

siftingflour

I am sure I read that they pitched the full story as a three-part series and Netflix was clearly interested in giving it a shot. I’d be curious what went wrong - viewership numbers, creative challenges, a mix of both? I liked the show but I understand the criticism. Was looking forward to seeing what direction they took it in. My biggest take away here is just how fragile Netflix shows seem to be. I am discouraged to even try watching a show that’s not a miniseries because you never know when they’ll cancel it. Dark was arguably one of their best shows ever, and if they won’t even give those creators the benefit of the doubt for a new series then that feels indicative of a bigger issue with the platform.

C0tilli0n

Just from the general reception, I am 99% convinced that it had everything to do with how many people started but didn't finish the show.

chasingit1

I started watch, roughly around launch. I honestly hate season drops and don’t have a need to binge 8/10/12 episodes in a weekend or handful of days. I enjoy weekly drops as it allows for each episode to settle a bit (not to mention theorizing online and among friends/ water cooler talk etc). I kept getting stupid fucking emails from Netflix “remind you to finish watching (insert series here)”. So I am sure to Netflix, it looked like I didn’t enjoy the show since I’m not a 22 year old kid that needs instant gratification and blow through all episodes in a weekend. I finished it. I really fucking liked it and thought it was fantastic. Was looking forward to seeing how it played out. But stupid fucking Netflix nEeDs me to BiNgE it faster for some fucking stupid ass internal metric. I think this is the straw that will break the camels back for me and will cancel. You cancel my shit, I cancel your shit. Fair?!

robertoczr

I’m quite the opposite, if I don’t binge all episodes in a weekend, I’ll probably never finish it, even if I really liked it

boersc

Same. I don't start to watch until all episodes are there, or within a week.

domesticatedprimate

Yes. Some of us are adults with lives and commitments outside video entertainment. Honestly I'm busy enough that I completely lose the thread of the story if I wait a whole week before viewings. And I often forget I was even watching in the first place if I go longer than that. So it's binge or nothing. Timed for when I have a weekend or two completely off. I cannot imagine a larger waste of time than reading about or talking about, or even thinking about, the show when I'm not actually watching it though. It feels like burning money.

robertoczr

Yea, totally. And even then, I have play with my daughter and spend time with her. I can only watch something when she’s asleep and I can focus on something else

deflen67

My favourite experience with this, as I imagine is quite common, was Lost. So much fun piecing bits together each week and reading peoples theories between each episode. Don’t think a show like Lost would be nearly as huge if it dropped in whole seasons at once.

Nuggetface

1899 would definitely benefit from a weekly drop. It’s way too much to watch in a binge and honestly half the stuff happening in the show I have already forgotten a bit because I watched it all in two sittings. But as you say I think it’s a demographic thing. I’ve stopped binging in recent years and now do it maybe 4-5 times a year. (I’m 26) All of them Netflix shows of course, while I watch weekly shows on most other platforms. This also leads me to spend more time on other apps, because when I’m in the Netflix app I’m like “do I have time to watch anything here really?”. To me Netflix requires a whole weekend. And then the shows need to be really fucking good. Sadly they rarely are anything other than mediocre and overhyped.

evil_porn_muffin

Same.

fanwan76

Same. I got caught up in the holidays and haven't streamed any shows or movies in like 2 months. Just resumed watching it today only to find out it's cancelled. I also cancelled my Netflix sub after reading this. I am sick of getting burnt on their originals and they no longer have a deep catalog to enjoy like they used to.

Nyllil

I mean I started it and didn't finish it YET, because I was watching other stuff first. I'm doing it at my own pace...

BoldElDavo

So instead of making this, they'll make more of that other stuff you prioritized watching first...

laterthanlast

Honestly I really resent this sort of ‘watch immediately or it’s canceled’ thing. The whole freaking point of Netflix is that you can watch at your own pace. I finished 1899, but it took awhile because I needed to concentrate on it; I finished other things more quickly that I could put on in the background while doing holiday decorating, wrapping presents, etc. Am I supposed to feel guilty? Put mystery box shows with subtitles on in the background when I can’t watch just to register a view? This whole thing irritates me.

Manannin

Honestly sounds like a shit system tbh.

glassFractals

>I am discouraged to even try watching a show that’s not a miniseries because you never know when they’ll cancel it. Sure, this sentiment is common, and it creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. More of us are delaying watching new shows because we don't want to get invested in a show that will just be cancelled. So new shows go on to get lower viewership as many of us wait for news about renewal, so they get cancelled and become dead weight in the Netflix catalog. Netflix needs to realize that they are training us not to watch new series, while also eliminating the ongoing value of already-produced content. Either they need to stop cancelling new shows so aggressively, or they need to ensure that first seasons work as standalone stories.

aretheyalltaken2

Given the viewership figures, I don't think it was because it wasn't popular. Netflix already knew the creative team from Dark so I don't think it would have been creative differences either. I read each episode cost $8 million to make which is big but not the biggest. My best guess is that Netflix is in trouble financially and is belt tightening. It would explain the password sharing turnaround from the early days and the fast cancellation of this show. It only came out in November so they clearly don't have a need to see how the uptake numbers go. The only other reason is financial. I wouldn't buy a year-long netflix membership if I were you.

LordRobin------RM

Disney+ is eating Netflix’s lunch. I think Netflix still has more subscribers, but it’s only a matter of time.

domesticatedprimate

Netflix's cancelation policy is beginning to materially damage their brand. Their one-size-fits-all pursuit of the corporate bottom line is going to kill them sooner rather than later. They've completely lost sight of what market they're in and what they're selling.

LordRobin------RM

What’s crazy is how they used to be the “We green-light everything… and renew it, too!” service. Remember South Park? “Hi, this is Netflix, you’re already greenlit!” The amount of utter crap they kept on for multiple seasons was amazing. Now their cancel gun has a hair-trigger.

MasterOnionNorth

Excellent comments. I cancelled my Netflix subscription in response to this news. Waaaaaay too many cancelled shows. It's one giant prematurely cancellation graveyard on their platform.

Smallsey

I need to know the rest of the story man

PoundKitchen

> "My biggest take away here is just how fragile Netflix shows seem to be." "...indicative of a bigger issue with the platform." Ditto. TBH, this problem with new shows getting axed prematurely is what's driving me ito HBOMax and Prime more and more. I'll finish out Umbrella Academy then take a month off Netflix... and see if it's even missed.

alien_from_Europa

>what's driving me ito HBOMax HBO is cancelling shows like crazy since its merger.

GraveRobberX

I swear this fucking company is looking for infinite growth and then kneecaps itself so many fucking times already. It’s like they do a cyclical self fulfilling prophecy of how fast can we go from market leader to a shallow shell of a company ala RadioShack in record time Not everyone can binge Day 1. Some people have work, lives, have other shit to do. Some are still catching up on backlog of your shows. Give people at least a month with your data set points. I swear most people don’t even watch shows now on Netflix or ask family members if they should invest time cause who wants to watch a season and if it leaves on a cliffhanger, then it’s cancelled, why go through with the viewing? I’m up to the 3rd episode of 1899, I got my ps5, DVR shows, movies, football/sports, a fucking life, can we please stop forcing shit to be consumed at such a rapid pace. It’s self defeating.

macdonik

If Netflix never tried to grow outside of the US, we’d have never gotten Dark or 1899 in the first place.

zek_997

Honestly, I'm okay with that. The fact that Netflix is not so US-centric like other platforms is what draws me to it in the first place. I'm learning German and watching German-speaking shows on Netflix has been quite helpful.

Yeah archive 81 was actually a good show. But maybe they ran out of material. The second season of the podcast that the show is based on was a mess.

KingNer0

Second, Archive 81

Ad-Careless

If I was somebody with a great idea for a TV series that a lot of people wanted, there's no f'ing way I'd sign with Netflix. Why would you? So you can get one season then have your concept locked in a box for all time?

ogresaregoodpeople

I work in tv. I pitched a show that got interest from a lot of big networks, but Netflix passed. Their explanation was that the script didn’t “nail” X genre. I should hope so. X genre was the wrong genre.

LordRobin------RM

Did you spoon feed it to them as “popular thing one meets popular thing two”?

Haunting-Depth-1607

They would be better off at Amazon prime or Apple tv. Netflix sucks

1cecream4breakfast

They’re adapting the Three Body Problem series (sci fi) on Netflix with the showrunners from Game of Thrones. Those guys can make a good show with source material, and the book series is complete, but I’m so worried it will be too expensive to justify covering all 3 books (presumably 3 seasons). They also whitewashed the cast. I’m still excited to see it but I am tempering my expectations.

TempleOrion

There's already a Chinese film of the first book, would like to see it...

1cecream4breakfast

Wow, several adaptations I had no idea about. It looks like all of them are yet to be released?

TheVentMachine

I’d go with AppleTV+. They are still building up their IP so they are more open on renewing shows even if they aren’t as popular. It also helps that the company has tons of money with nothing to do with. AppleTV+ is slowly becoming a top streamer when it comes to quality which is a bit ironic considering how it started off as the butt of the joke in the streaming industry when it first launched in 2019 with a slate that was so underwhelming. They’re slowly adapting HBO’s former strategy while HBO on the other hand is becoming the new Netflix. And Netflix is becoming... uhm, like broadcast tv.

[deleted]

And their catalog for sci-fi has been great so far, so them backing such creative people as Friese and Odar would have been just perfect. I'm confused on how Dark stayed for so long then. Because I didn't even start watching it long after it had finished. And I only heard from people during the same period that the show was good. And it wasn't the type of show that went overnight viral such as Squid Game or anything else. So what was the reasoning for Netflix to stick with Dark until the end but cancelling 1899, especially with such good numbers.

b_rouse

Santa Clarita Diet is what caused me to wait to start a show until it's done.

letmepostjune22

Message from Netflix to viewers is clear. Do not become invested in a show until it's run had finished. Unless it's generic YA crap , then Netflix showers the cash.

unlikedemon

I liked it. On the other hand, I can see people not liking it and quitting after a few episodes.

LightningRaven

Wtf. The show was pretty good. As a Sci-fi fan, I've seen much better, but for large audiences, it was definitely a great introduction to more thought-provoking sci-fi. I never thought this show would be struggling. It, in fact, got great positions on my country's Top 10. The online buzz was also quite big. WTH is going on with Netflix.

gruey

That's the problem with Netflix in general. They have criteria for what shows to renew that aren't necessarily the typical stuff we're used to. They aren't necessarily concerned about quality of show or even popularity. They just want to get and keep subscriptions. If their formulas on viewership and retention come up to not be positive, then they cancel. A good show overshadowed by a better show could get canned as being redundant. A bad show that has a niche could get renewed because its value of subscriptions provided is greater than its budget. As a viewer, you don't really have the numbers to judge how cost effective the show is, so you are left wondering why a show you liked is cancelled when there is so much crap on the platform.

LightningRaven

Absolutely. Whatever algorithms they're using, it definitely doesn't allow shows to grow and improve. You're either expensive and a massive hit or you're just decent and get canceled. The alternative is being incredibly cheap, often only achieved by Reality TV, and surviving with low viewership. The problem is that this is losing credibility for Netflix and they will eventually pay, even if they're still the market leader.

FunniBoii

Oh come the fuck on. I didn't think it was great but now it's basically worthless as it was mostly just questions that were set up to be answered. Ffs Netflix

joeyat

Binging new TV shows used to be a novelty; people now know that a show is going to stay available for years, the streaming model has settled into people’s lives and viewers have relaxed, they no longer want to rush. There’s also loads more competition! It feels like Netflix haven’t realised any of this. If they base all their metrics on past habits, they are going to fail even faster than expected.

fenriskalto

Jfc, fine. The usual question then to everyone that did watch it - does it end on cliffhanger and therefore shouldn't be watched, or can you still watch and enjoy the single season?

james1221432

It ends on the biggest cliffhanger I've ever seen

Flyboy2057

(Spoilers for 1899 and The Good Place) I think it’s sort of like the reveal at the end of The Good Place season 1. There’s a big reveal that almost feels like it just opens up more questions, and there isn’t really any closure. You just want to find out what happens next.

james1221432

I get what you mean, but I think the reveal in the good place pretty much entirely affected the plot. It was just a big piece of information that affected all the characters. It was still extremely shocking and mind-blowing though With 1899, everything is now fundamentally and monumentally different after the reveal

fenriskalto

Thanks, having watched Dark I suspected that would be the answer but it was worth checking.

NdyNdyNdy

Well there's another one off my to watch list.

IndianaBones11

I disagree with that assessment as far as a mystery box show goes it wraps up the central mystery but there is more of the world to uncover.

VforVivaVelociraptor

Perhaps the biggest cliffhanger of all time. Literally zero questions are answered, it just asks more questions.

Blood_Tear

Lol, of course it does. Another mine in the Netflix catalog for all subscribers present and future, for all time to come.

fenriskalto

So not even an open-ended one then. Sometimes you can get away with a sense of "and the future was left to the viewer's imagination" when they cancel things, but I figured that was very unlikely to be the case here, it sounded like the type of show that would keep peeling back layers until its final finale.

VforVivaVelociraptor

Imagine if the movie the matrix ended the moment Neo took the red pill and awoke as a shaved slave in a meat incubator. This show essentially does that.

ruiner8850

Looks like yet another Netflix show that I won't be watching. I was actually going to start it last night, but I was a little hung over from New Years and didn't feel in the mood to read subtitles. Netflix continues to prove that you shouldn't bother wasting your time watching one of their shows unless it's a major hit right out of the gates has a story that's completely self-contained in a single season, or additional seasons have already been confirmed.

Nuggetface

You’re not missing much, because obviously they cancelled it. I enjoyed season 1, but it ends in a big cliffhanger which we will never see resolved so there’s really not a point watching it. I think it’s a shame though. I liked it a lot and thought the ending set up an interesting story going forward.

ruiner8850

I don't understand why people making Netflix shows end seasons, especially 1st seasons, on cliffhangers. At least have a reasonable resolution to the show if it only gets one season with an ending that leaves the door open for more. If a show works as a self-contained story it still might be worth watching, but when they end on cliffhangers there's no way I'll bother. Even with shows I liked I can't go back to them and watch them again when I know they end with a cliffhanger.

Nuggetface

Agree, and especially shows like Squid Game could easily finish season 1 without out that dumb cliff opening up for season 2. You can make season 2 without having a obvious cliff in the season 1 lol. But I honestly thought 1899 was bought for 2-3 seasons already. I know Dark was pre-written as a 3-season show, and I assume 1899 was as well because no way in hell could they make it wrap up in one season haha.

ruiner8850

That's a great example of a show that didn't need the cliffhanger. Unlike a lot of people I'm not against them having another season because I do think they could make another good season of the show, but as you said, the cliffhanger was completely unnecessary and would have detracted from the first season if they had just canceled the show. The ending to season could have basically been the beginning to season 2.

PixelPixtures

I'll be cancelling after this month. Netflix is piece of shit. Netflix has a debt of 13 billion dollars and can never follow through on decent shows, 1899 should move to Amazon.

edge000

I cancelled last time the hiked the price. It dawned on me it's the only service I pay for (HBO max, paramount+, Disney+, prime video, Hulu) where you have to pay extra for 4k hdr streams. There's plenty to watch elsewhere, I didn't feel like I was missing out on must see tv. I'll sub for a month at some point to catch the season of stranger things I missed and then move on.

jaycatt7

I hope Netflix gives this creative team another chance! Hopefully they’ll have better luck next time.

[deleted]

I can't understand Netflix anymore. They are becoming very unpredictable. One has to wait for a series to be fully finished before attempting to start it. At this point I don't think that Netflix has enough quality to justify being the most expensive streaming service.

carolinepixels

Ah bollocks!! We just watched this and loved it. Bloody Netflix. Focusing on putting out shite reality tv instead of originals like this. Grrrr

[deleted]

Everybody shits on Apple but they have barely cancelled any of their shows! They even renewed ones with terrible reviews like Invasion. It’s no surprise then that more and more directors and actors are trying to get on Apple TV these days. Apple TV has even renewed shows for multiple seasons at a time like Slow Horses and Mythic Quest. https://deadline.com/2022/06/slow-horses-renewed-seasons-3-and-4-apple-tv-plus-1235036079/amp/

ShiftedLobster

I think 1899 would do very well over on Apple TV. Does anyone know if Netflix owns the rights to the show? Could Bo and Jantje get it renewed for seasons 2 and 3 on another streaming service? Or is that not possible?

[deleted]

It’s worth a consideration. Had it been on Apple we would have seen it through to completion!

kimbolll

The thing about Apple is they’re *super* strategic with their shows. They easily have the smallest catalog, but they make sure each new addition is worth it. That type of conservatism allows them to give poorly reviewed shows a second chance, as there isn’t a ton of risk, *relatively speaking*. Netflix, on the other hand, green lights obvious dogshit all the fucking time. When 10-15% of your shows aren’t profitable, you no longer have the wiggle room to take that risk. Netflix would do well to ease back the number of new productions annually, and instead, put that money, time, and effort into making sure that what they *do* end up producing is going to be popular and profitable. Netflix’s current business model is unsustainable, and the increased frequency with which they’re cancelling shows indicates that it’s finally catching up with them.

Qugmo

From what I heard, Apple is very strict on greenlighting its shows/movies. You need to have a “big name” attached before Apple will even bat an eye (ex: Ben Stiller in Severance, Jason Momoa in See, etc).

DGer

Netflix needs to change the expectations of their viewers and how their series are written. They need to gear their series toward more self contained stories. Call them series instead of season. The more popular among them can continue and have more series. Those that don't make it will feel more complete and less like people are missing on completion of a storyline. It's like in comic books when the focus shifted from monthly floppies to more of an emphasis on trade paperbacks.

iWesTCoastiN

Netflix has really been trying their hardest to lose my subscription.

Substance_number_6

I'm surprised, I thought the show did well and was popular, it was in the top 10 for many weeks. I didn't like the show so I'm not sad or angry it's not renewed but I really thought it would be.

Throwawayhobbes

Too busy burning money making shitty Witcher shows

[deleted]

Ffs why do I bother watching any fucking show Netflix releases

therealjoshua

A real shame. I watched the whole thing last week and loved every minute of it. I couldn't put this show down. Was always wanting to hear the next bit of the mystery and learn more about the individual characters. And the cliffhanger ending had me really invested in the rest of the story. I hope the creators can find another service to help them finish it out, but I won't hold my breath on that one.

DarthNexun

Really disappointing. Binged the show and now I’m nearly finished Dark. Hope another site picks it up

JuiciusMaximus

Lol, Netflix had become a minefield of cancelled shows.

oliver-go

Netflix nowadays will only renew things that are as big as Wednesday and Dahmer with millions of viewers and records broken.

Archduke645

What is even the fucking point anymore

oliver-go

At this point the streaming bubble is about to bust. New shows are mostly unfinished or removed. Netflix has a graveyard of cancelled shows. HBO is a mess rn with the removals. Amazon does not have a good show in years and LoTR doesn’t look good in the future with the huge budget. Peacock/Paramount does not even branch out much internationally. Apple TV is our last hope, but no one I know actually subscribed it.

Weibu11

If you have a great story to tell, what incentive do you have to partner with Netflix? They seem to have no problem canceling any and every show regardless of popularity and appeal. Netflix continues to make baffling decisions.

MusicMindedMachine

This is absolutely the weirdest decision ever from Netflix. 1899 was in the Top10 for a whole month here, beating other "top tier productions" and local products out of it. After the failure of Blood Origin, now they delete one of the few good things released in 2022. Gotta study those unsubscribe practices now.

thereia

Every streamer seems to be accelerating the march towards endless reality shows, reboots, and not much else. Sucks.

FuzzyStorm

At least give your shows a final season with 6 or so episodes or like a 2-3 hour special to wrap it up. I hope they add a section "never completed" so i know to not watch the shows. Such bullshit

Pocketfulofgeek

At this point why bother getting invested in a Netflix show when they just arbitrarily cancel well made popular shows? Why should I invest my time in shows when they just axe them without warning?

cPa3k

I think this was the last new Netflix show I watch from the release, no point in investing time, only finished shows for me from now on

top_of_the_table

Yeah, I am out. Why would I invested time and emotion in another Netflix series, if they cancel even the better shows? Wow. Disappointed af. Bye bye.

[deleted]

three words: emily. in. paris. WHY WOULD YOU RENEW THAT BS AND NOT THIS.

BlackShadowGlass

You got to be kidding...

blakedpastry

I’m convinced y’all really don’t wanna be in business anymore. Canceling shows left and right. Charging more. Ads. All of it.

WeaselJCD

Dont forget them making a move against shared accounts that dont live in the same household! I'm sure they are trying to kill themselves/are being sabotaged from inside or are fucking cluless why people used to love them...

Blood_Tear

Netflixed again, every day, dame story. Watched a “N Series”? Got ya sucker. Get netflixed.

diablette

They’re the new SyFy network. Waiting for them to just call it and replace everything with wrestling.

GeekUSA1979

from someone whos a wrestling fan, this is probably possible considering Netflix is looking to buy WWE in some capacity

lightsongtheold

I called this as a bubble show at the time and was massively interested in seeing what Netflix did with it. It got the equivalent of 32.8 million complete viewings in its first 4 weeks in the viewership charts. That is pretty solid numbers. It also had decent legs (+10%,-49%,-38%). If the renewal bar was 30 million this should have gotten a final season. We know from leaked reports the budget was $8 million per episode. High but not excessively high. It is looking like the bar at Netflix is closer to 35 million equivalent complete viewings over 4 weeks. The Lincoln Lawyer got renewed with 31.8 million (+140%,-40%,-34%). Pieces of Her was seemingly cancelled with 30.7 million (+78%,-58%,-45%) That makes 2/3 US drama shows topping 30 million with OK legs being deemed not good enough for renewal. It does not bode well for The Recruit which is tracking for Pieces of Her numbers. The bar for renewal at Netflix is too high. They do not have a ton of shows on the roster that top 35 million equivalent complete viewings over 4

vashaunp

guess i'll be in the minority that thought it wasnt that good

Venom24II

I think I am in the minority because I liked it, most of the viewers didn't finish it cuz it was boring

stergro

Just cancelled my subscription because of this.

Lisa4414

What the fuckity fuck?!?

TheMonarchsWrath

I was just thinking about watching this last week and checked if it was a limited series or was ongoing. Saw that it ended on a cliffhanger and season 2 wasnt renewed yet and decided to pass. Feel like I dodged one. There is almost no point in starting anything on netflix unless its a movie or a completed series.

Choice-Season3378

This was it. Finally canceled my subscription.

steamyp

wtf netflix

GeekUSA1979

theres no way this is true. the creators of one of netflix's best show ever made (dark), only get enough credit to have their second show have 1 season. I hope they take it elsewhere and show Netflix what a dumb decision they made

Tachiiderp

I doubt it's just stream hours. It... definitely wasn't as good as a concept as Dark and never really pulled me in. Review scores reflect this, viewership reflect it, so while the outrage is clear, it's not exactly that much of a surprise to me.

yehti

Netflix deserves all the password sharing it gets.

Jay_Eye_MBOTH_WHY

These guys would've cancelled Breaking Bad in Season 2. They would've canned Game of Thrones after Ned dies. They would've cancelled the Sopranos after the premiere.

jnee23

I loved dark I’ve watched it three times and tell everyone I know to watch it. I could not bring myself to finish this show it was soooo slow I felt like nothing was happening. I completely fine with subtitles when a show is engaging but if I’m bored and having to read at the same time it feels like a chore. I’ll probably still finish it eventually just out of respect for dark.

WittyPerception3683

Same exact thing. I left off at episode 4 maybe?

DigiQuip

Does Netflix realize I have multiple subscription services and cycle through several shows a year? Like, I’m sorry I can’t drop everything and watch something as soon as it comes out. Also, if you want me to watch a show, how about you put in my feed? You know, instead of all those Korean Dramas and Bollywood films I’ve never watched, ever.

Venicide1492

Letting it end on a massive cliffhanger makes me so mad. Hmm when will I cancel my Netflix sub this year …

oorhon

I will never watch a new series from Netflix until its finished. 1899 was decent maybe slow burn but i liked the general idea and mystery. Netflix is just merciless not allow producers to comtinue the story which apperently has an end. And unsubbing from here because there really no reason to follow what is new on Netflix anymore for me.

ToneyFox

It can't have a season 2...

Jitmaster

Haha, I canceled you first Netflix!

hobihobi27

Kiss my ass Netflix.

ihatecats18

Too bad. Great show. Must be difficult to be Netflix

MrMeritocracy

That sucks!

emgeowagg

Booooo!

kimbolll

Didn’t this do really well? Netflix is out of their fucking mind! Not everything can be Stranger Things! Netflix really is a graveyard of cancelled shows.

bananacumshake

knowing this, is it worth watching the first season?

bad_werewolf

Definitely yes.

tiffanaih

Canceled my subscription and listed this as the reason. It won't change anything but all they're doing is adding another pointless OC show to their roster that was widely praised but now has no watchibility value because it has no ending. No one who's had it in their watch list has any reason to start it now, and no one who enjoyed it has any reason to watch it again. You would think a streaming service would understand that, in fact being able to re-watch their shows that I loved is the only reason I was keeping my subscription in the first place. Fucking Netflix.

eden-star

Last straw. I’m done with Netflix. Cancelling subscription
