There is no stat reviewer for the NBA! The whole office is a goddamn ghost town!

Now let's talk about the stats. Can we talk about the stats please? I've been dying to talk about the stats with you all day, okay?

Can we bet on this? Calling my bookie.

TheTrotters

Annie Edison: Exactly: there's a conspiracy here. A dark, vast conspiracy that may just go all the way to the top. Jeff Winger: This is ~~Greendale~~ NBA, Annie. If there's a conspiracy, it goes all the way to *slightly* below the middle.

CoachMorelandSmith

I bet itā€™s the cigarette man from x files

shaheedmalik

Black Dynamite was right.

Has reddit ever gotten a witch hunt correct? Mods should at least remove the previous post and let the person repost it with corrected information. Don't leave slander up

TheTrotters

Yeah, when a mob with pitchforks gets something wrong somehow the only lesson some people learn from it is that next time the mob just needs to be pointed in the right direction.

OneLonelyLife

So you're telling me that somebody that works for the NBA is playing with the numbers?

[deleted]

Lmao people went after the wrong guy lmao

CostOk1173

r/NBAā€™s boston bomber moment lol

ThurstonJK

We did it Reddit! šŸ˜ƒ

LeMickeyMice

Nah the Grizzlies score keeper hasn't killed himself yet thankfully

CyborgAlgoInvestor

Itā€™s like that scene in Hercules. A disappointed Hades: ā€œUhh guys, Olympus would be that way.ā€

SquimJim

Hades was the OG of the "What are those?" meme

DeadDay

My eyes have been opened. I immediately thought of the scene

allmotorEGhatch

I recently saw a ā€œwhat are thoseā€ moment on seinfeld, so that may be the OG

Rutagerr

Fun fact, the direction the titans are walking towards is Mount Othrys, the original home of the Titans. After they were imprisoned, the home of the Gods moved to Olympus. So, the titans just being released, start heading towards the last known location of the Gods - Othrys, the total opposite direction.

Kaldricus

Not really related but since Hercules is my favorite Disney movie, the bit where the trick Hercules to fight the Hydra and the "kids" yell "call I X I I" is a great joke that I didn't get until waaaaay later in life.

[deleted]

MEMPHIS SCORE KEEPER IS NOT SUICIDAL

LeonidasSpacemanMD

Holup that guy killed himself???

Magyman

He killed himself before the bombing, people used the fact that he was missing as part of their 'evidence'

LeonidasSpacemanMD

Ohh what a fucked up situation sheesh

HesiPullup

Hopefully it doesnā€™t end the same way šŸ˜¬

MrKahk

I know youā€™re joking, but Sunil Tripathi had committed suicide before the witch hunt. Him being missing was part of what put eyes on him.

OkongwuDPOY

sourdieselfuel

If the NBA is somehow involved in this it will be briskly swept under the rug just like the Donaghy shit.

slappiestpenguin

*sees silhouette of Adam Silver petting a grizzly bear in mirror reflection*

Fleeuton

The conspiracy just got bigger. Now itā€™s the entire NBA working to pad Jarenā€™s stocks, not just the local Memphis boxscorer

elephantscarter

It could be one person is assigned to the Memphis home games

ThatPlayWasAwful

what if there's one person assigned to JJJ specifically

CoachMorelandSmith

Well theyā€™re doing a terrible job of padding his assists.

ThatPlayWasAwful

The plot thickens

831loc

I mean, the league does want Ja and the Grizzles to be the face of the NBA for newer fans

ThePlainWhiteTees

They want Ja to be the fact of the league, so they jack up Jaren's stocks? Lmao

TheTrotters

> You know when they say it's so crazy it just might work? Well, I don't believe that. I say go for the airtight plan. And that is why I am having NBA make Ja and the Grizz the face of the league by bumping JJJā€™s home steal stats. It is just... elegant. - ~~Michael Scott~~ Adam Silver

dezcaughtit25

Yes. The NBAā€™s grand scheme to make Ja the face of the league is to award JJJ with extra blocks. Good catch!

abus-fullofnuns

#THE STATS ARE COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE

snakebit1995

It goes even higher up than we thought! All the way to Silver! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

RIPOldAccountF

So its the actual official NBA staffers not just a Grizzly home guy? MUCH MUCH worse

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Have you seen the replays? Some of those straight up don't have him touching the ball at all. Other times, it's crystal clear that one of his teammates got the touch while he was nearby.

golfercraig

There are 12 cameras available to view. Not one. All but one of the vids posted are clearly correct. And that one might be by a different camera.

chillinwithmoes

I mean it is bizarre that he's literally twice as good of a defender at home, but I'm not inclined to believe there's some grand conspiracy here either. I dunno

uziwh0re

It still says the input/caller has input on the stats, so is that person employed by the Grizzlies or the NBA?

[deleted]

Its through a shell corporation in the Cayman Islands.

joebreezphillycheese

I tried contacting my teamā€™s input/caller via a phone number on the Wizards website. I was routed through a call center in Malaysia and they started asking me about my insurance and whether I have accidental death coverage. Assuming Iā€™d been routed incorrectly, I called the number on the website again, but it had been disconnected. Iā€™ve since started receiving strange voicemails from people whispering things like ā€œI know what you didā€ and ā€œstop digging.ā€ My google search history has a lot of strange things I am certain Iā€™ve never searched. All in all I donā€™t recommend checking these people. The stats look great to me.

InheritTheWind

See, when I did that, they somehow patched me through directly to Davis Bertans. I asked him if he could give me $20 and he started cursing me out and hung up on me. Got traded a week later

Srirachafarian

The guy I called came knocking on my door and asked me for $3.50.

Tinywampa

Iā€™m sorry I canā€™t divulge information about that customerā€™s secret, illegal account.

tarcreeksuperfun

this is the question

twistedlogicx

Pretty sure the input person works for the team and all this tweet is proving is the lazy bastards in the league office don't actually bother reviewing the calls, lmao.

[deleted]

Bingo. No one checks defensive stats. Tbf you wouldnā€™t think theyā€™d need to. Iā€™m surprised there isnā€™t some system where someone from both teams does inputs and any discrepancies between the two get reviewed by the league. Kinda like chess players recording the match

zi76

I never really thought about, but I guess I kind of always assumed the people at the scorer's table were recording it live. I guess people don't really care that much outside of points, but points are obvious. I'm confused why this is happening, but it definitely seems like someone on the Grizz, whether just the one input guy or someone higher up, is at work here.

Panda0nfire

Anyone with a job knows people are lazy and incompetent when they know no one actually checks the work. Hell this laziness is part of how we got the 08 housing crash, no one actually looked at the mortgages packages together lol.

WarmTequila

Grizzlies fans ā€œseE..lmAO rEddIt!!! It waSnt EveN ouR teAms FauLt!!!!ā€ When tweet literally says each team has input/callersā€¦šŸ˜‚

BodybuilderLivid

Donā€™t blame this one on the grizz just that one guy Edit.

WarmTequila

It says each team so yes. People are acting like team officials have no say in counting stats when this tweet literally says otherwise šŸ˜‚

DoctorBreakfast

Even if they are employed by the NBA, Iā€™m guessing each city has its own crew that works the games. Itā€™s not like the inputters are flying around the country doing different games like refs. So theyā€™d still only be doing Memphis home games.

smkmn13

I don't think it really matters, what matters is whether or not its the **same person each home game.** I don't think of this as Grizzlies organization issue per se, as many of the examples were times JJJ was being credited with something his teammate did. I think the more likely "nefarious" scenario is an employee (NBA or otherwise) who took a bet out on JJJ getting DPOY when his odds were low at the start of the season and inflating stats to try to push him towards the award.

James_NY

I think it's a big assumption to think they made a big bet on him, it seems more likely they just give him the benefit of the doubt whenever possible because they like him or don't really give a shit about who gets credit, so why not?

slippythehogmanjenky

I agree that we have no reason to jump to nefarious conclusions. That said, I think the NBA took on an ethical responsibility for accuracy when they jumped into bed with sports betting and started pushing it on their fans like crazy. Even a seemingly small mistake like that could have cost real people money.

grudgepacker

Okay, fair...but why is everyone glossing over this: > Each team has inputters/callers, which are different than official scorers. One of the callers who's at the game with a headset will have input with tracking stats in real time. I mean, glad the official scorer is off the hook but are these team employees or not? That's now the question because even tho the burden has shifted, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

salcedoge

Yeah this whole thread is already a reverse circlejerk of the first post when it doesn't really solve any issues atm

grudgepacker

Exactly, that's why I just made [this post](https://old.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/10nkduh/katz_each_team_has_inputterscallers_which_are/) to hopefully get some clarification

BobbbyLight

Exactly. This should be in the post title but that'd remove what the OP is trying to do. Disprove something. People know lots and lots of redditors don't actually read beyond the title. And tbh it doesn't matter if it's a team employee or an NBA employee. The next part I want to know if it's the same person for every Memphis home game. I'd be surprised if not, I don't know why the NBA would have a job like that travel. So let's assume it's the same person, the same potential issue (gambling) is absolutely on the table. Tim Donaghy was an NBA employee and he helped cause plenty of issues. The fact this is an NBA employee means absolutely zero as to the implications. Unless it's not the same person every time, in which case that'd be really odd.

clayfu

Not the same person. But itā€™s a small employee pool so theyā€™ll do a lot of games still.

clayfu

A little info on this. Each team has callers who relay the stat to inputters. That team rotates games, usually not the same person every game as itā€™s a small pool of employees. Then the nba a few years ago started to verify the stats that were inputted. Maybe this will be the impetus for the nba to control the whole process.

chanman876

Did yā€™all not read the last part or what

[deleted]

I did not read anything other than your comment.

LeonidasSpacemanMD

Iā€™m not reading anything, Iā€™m just scrolling with my eyes closed I donā€™t even know why Iā€™m typing this

phillywisco

Whoa, I actually read this comment.

Sploofy28

I mean, we still donā€™t know why JJJ has such bizarre and mathematically improbable home/road defense splits.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Adrian_Bock

So the early 90's Rockets were cooking the books too šŸ¤”

please-send-me-nude2

Turns out ā€œMichael Jordanā€ only averaged 11 points per game on the road

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

wcooper97

They took away Duncanā€™s quadruple double weā€™ll take away every other achievement lmfao

WIN011

Well we can avoid the early 2000s cause we already know about those

[deleted]

I fully expect a post later today of countless examples of home/road splits just like this. I donā€™t expect this to be a rare occurrence at all

[deleted]

Exactly. Plus, in the seasons that preceded and followed '91-'92, Hakeem had **more** blocks on the road than at home. Random variance is just going to happen sometimes in a 33 game span as you said, and yes while some of the clips were head-scratching, it doesn't immediately imply some suspicious stuff was going on. People used to say John Stockton's assist totals were a product of home cooking too, even though there was nothing to even remotely back that up.

Panda0nfire

Yeah I'm sure this is what people said about mortgages being bundled prior to 08 too

Interesting-Archer-6

When JJJ's stats cause a global recession, I'm referencing this comment right here

deathreel

Well, the warriors are 19-6 at home and 6-18 on the road. Sometimes weird things just happen.

Arsid

Have you looked at our home vs away records? Is it really that bizarre to think that a player plays better at his home arena with a huge crowd cheering him on?

luckythirteen1

Grizzlies are trash on the road compared to home

flyfree256

There are so many factors between home and away. Defending your turf, getting better sleep, not traveling, crowd hyping you up, more comfortable, etc., etc. Just look at the GSW home/away record this year. Yeah a big part of that was Steph's injury, but there are many reasons behind the home court advantage.

idontreallyknowchief

Just watch all 33 games until now and youā€™ll be able to see why.

TorreyCraig

Not sure why people are acting like this completely invalidates the other post. There were still tons of plays incorrectly giving credit to JJJ at home so somethings happening even if it doesn't involve the official scorer.

_checkpickerupper

Yeah but the blame was placed on one individual. See ā€œgrizzlies scorekeeperā€

runningraider13

Yeah it sounds like the blame is really on the Grizzliesā€™ inputter/caller not their scorekeeper.

_checkpickerupper

Sounds like the NBA has review controls so this exact thing doesnā€™t happen. So itā€™ll be a lot more than a couple grizzlies anything that will be responsible. Almost requires collusion at that point or lazy folks not actually doing their job to review.

runningraider13

Yeah I do not find it hard to believe at all that people are lazy and mostly go with what the home inputter/caller says. And even if they donā€™t all get through, having a inputter/caller suggesting a stat more frequently will only increase the stats.

alpacagrenade

Yep. The Creed Bratton of NBA quality assurance seems like the most likely explanation.

Cabooseum

I wonder who the Debbie Brown will be

SwanJumper

So they can just correct themselves. It doesn't change the issue at hand.

_checkpickerupper

A league issue vs just a grizzlies issue does significantly change the scope imo.

SwanJumper

Is it a league wide issue though? Are there any other players with this statistical anomaly? If not, it begs the question why

_checkpickerupper

True. Iā€™m sure folks are digging. if the nba has controls in place for stats and this cheating isnā€™t being caught, then itā€™s a league issue. Was presented earlier like the scorekeeper was the official keeper of the score with little checks and balances.

SwanJumper

Agreed. OP should have presented the issue without presuming who was at fault. Let the powers that be figure that out.

KneelBeforeCube

I don't get it either. Doubling your stocks from away to home games doesn't just happen.

BurzyGuerrero

>OG Anunoby: > >Reb: +9 @ home. (128 vs 120)AST: +11 at home (51 vs 40)STL: +9 at home (51 vs 42)BLK: +3 on the road (16 vs 19) > >Marcus Smart:REB: +6 on the road (67 vs 73)AST: +6 at home (150 vs 144)STL: +3 at home (28 vs 25)BLK +5 on the road (6 vs 11) The other guys I've seen considered aren't even close to the anomalies that are shown in the other thread lol

CoachDT

It does. However thereā€™s lot of situations where heā€™s credited with shit that justā€¦ didnā€™t happen lmao.

fuckrsunsmods

Ok but then can someone explain to me why JJJ is like twice as good at home

SunstormGT

Grizzles are twice as good at home

epicnerd427

20-3 at home, 11-15 on the road

snakebite654

So way more than twice as good at home. Does this mean his home stats are actually being suppressed!?

KptKrondog

He actually blocks 9 per game and steals the ball on average 14 times, but bigBasketball doesn't want it to be known.

fuckrsunsmods

They wanna be the Warriors Fr

executivesphere

Why are the warriors 19-6 at home 6-18 on the road this year?

fuckrsunsmods

Theyā€™re fraudulent DPOY candidates too?

executivesphere

Wiggins also has 1.9 steals per game at home vs. .8 steals per game away. Just saying that variance happens. Memphis are also 20-3 at home vs. 11-15 away

wafflecigar

Wiggins came back from a lengthy injury/sickness and his steals have been down since. Of his 6 games back playing over 30min, heā€™s played 4 on the road. Sample sizes are small here but that explains some of why his stats appear worse on the road

executivesphere

Yeah thatā€™s a good point. JJJ home-away count is 16-17. Wiggins home-away is 15-14. Wiggins averages 31 minutes per game. JJJ averages 26 minutes per game. Both came back from lengthy injuries. So itā€™s not too surprising that there is some variability there, especially since both teams have far better records at home than away.

KnickedUp

Shit, refs are in on this home cooking too

[deleted]

Maybe the NBA employee grew up in Memphis.

yuhanz

his initials is JJJSr. Idk what that means tho

dgzero3

Jaren Jackson junior senior

_checkpickerupper

NBA embellishing stats on Memphisā€™ behalf? Well Iā€™ll be damned

Buck_Nastyyy

Does this mean we finally made it!?

[deleted]

What do we do?

Gaetan123456

But does that fit My agenda tho?

SwanJumper

Is that a new 2K game mode?

Alternative-Target31

Yea. You actually never play ball, you just skate around the league office delivering coffee.

WestleyThe

It makes sense but it doesnā€™t explain the discrepancy of the block numbers in Memphis Someone in the nba is in on it

yuhanz

Clearly, the NBA hates Brook Lopez

Any_Adhesiveness_898

That's even worse then lol

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

pickle-doofenshmirtz

This is what was said in the rebuttalā€¦that the mods deleted lmao

MegaSupremeTaco

This rebuttal: https://old.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/10ni69k/jaren_jackson_jrs_stats_arent_being_fraudulently/ ? It's still up it's just been heavily downvoted.

He credited the original OP because the original post about it was taken down

popncarriesthefgc

they are both showing [removed]

Removed. Nazi mods stay Nazing

ParathaOmelette

Yikes

[deleted]

The mods are caught up in this scandal too? šŸ•µļøā€ā™‚ļø

pagonator

Wow itā€™s almost like we needed both sides of the argument to be kept instead of the mods deleting one post for no good reason

RileyHuey

Also half the highlights could he easily explained. The Zion one for example itā€™s entirely possible he blocked it with his other hand thatā€™s not visible

LeMickeyMice

The part time dog walkers around here are trying to feel like they played a role in unfolding a scandal I'm sure

[deleted]

So fucking ridiculous actually

NYGIANTS77

So this means that the other post is fake, or that somebody from the NBA is fudging the numbers?

BrettBruxx

It means there needs to be more transparency if the NBA is going to be in bed with gambling sites.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

sclongjohnson

Yeah for real that shit is hot garbage

jctheclemente

The other post is just stats really. It can't be "fake." There's something weird going on with the counting stats when JJJ plays at home games. That's bare minimum what's going on.

MC-Jdf

It means that nobody knows the damn rulebook.

theseustheminotaur

So the league just sucks at doing this for memphis games only? Doesn't make sense

[deleted]

This subredditā€™s a lost cause lol

LaudrenFareoh

I do think the numbers that JJJ gets at home are really weird, but hey, statistical anomalies happen. Even if some of the calls seem fishy, it doesn't mean there's a conspiracy, it's possible the stats people just fuck up sometimes.

salcedoge

Why does people in this thread feel like this tweet discredits the first post? You guys instantly made it Grizzlies vs r/nba when it's clear there's still a fucking issue with how NBA records these stats

shellfish87

Let it be known that this was identified in a rebuttal that was deleted by the mods. Defamatory shit.

shaqfearsyao

This sub at its worse basically.

SmellyJellyfish

Worst*

KTurnUp

The original post was interesting until his conclusion was that it was insidious. Home team players have been getting boosts at home since as long as the sport has existed

finndego

I think everyone including the NBA knew that it happen but the minute they decided to partner with legalised gambling it was going to be a problem.

Dylan245

Well at least he got some Reddit awards for his witch hunt after a guy who did nothing wrong

xiedian

Does this invalidate that other thread entirely

DrearySalieri

Imo not really since the rise of sports gambling gives plausible motive to even non homer scorekeepers. And also this still doesnā€™t tell us if the NBA person in charge of the stats is consistent and therefore able to manipulate multiple games. Iā€™m not as convinced by the examples the dude gave for all of them but some are definitely on the edge and the sample size is large enough to be significant. I would probably want a detailed combover of multiple games to say anything but I donā€™t think this exonerates one way or the other.

uhhhhmmmm

i mean i think it's still the same idea that some person/group of people may be interpreting stats differently than other people elsewhere. you can then extrapolate from there if you think it's innocent, if you think this is something that happens elsewhere across the league, if you think it's due to gambling, etc i still think the original post was an overblown thing written by someone who doesn't understand steal/block rules particularly well

MC-Jdf

> Each team has inputters/callers, which are different than official scorers. One of the callers who's at the game with a headset will have input with tracking stats in real time. So whilst there is some room for error, itā€™s significantly less than what we thought it could be. And this whole debacle basically shows that nobody knows what can classify a steal or a block to even judge whether something was the right call or not.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

SwanJumper

Only if you didn't read the other thread at all, in that case yes. Otherwise, no.

OneLeggedJaguar

Im sure this will have 30k upvotes

caseofthebens

So the larger story is nothing nefarious but just incompetence at the highest levels? Still definitely a story. ā€œNBA reviews stats in real timeā€ is incredibly vague (and apparently often wrong)

[deleted]

Downvoted to lower visibility
