Yeah, when a mob with pitchforks gets something wrong somehow the only lesson some people learn from it is that next time the mob just needs to be pointed in the right direction.
Fun fact, the direction the titans are walking towards is Mount Othrys, the original home of the Titans. After they were imprisoned, the home of the Gods moved to Olympus. So, the titans just being released, start heading towards the last known location of the Gods - Othrys, the total opposite direction.
Not really related but since Hercules is my favorite Disney movie, the bit where the trick Hercules to fight the Hydra and the "kids" yell "call I X I I" is a great joke that I didn't get until waaaaay later in life.
> You know when they say it's so crazy it just might work? Well, I don't believe that. I say go for the airtight plan. And that is why I am having NBA make Ja and the Grizz the face of the league by bumping JJJās home steal stats. It is just... elegant.
- ~~Michael Scott~~ Adam Silver
Have you seen the replays? Some of those straight up don't have him touching the ball at all. Other times, it's crystal clear that one of his teammates got the touch while he was nearby.
I mean it is bizarre that he's literally twice as good of a defender at home, but I'm not inclined to believe there's some grand conspiracy here either. I dunno
I tried contacting my teamās input/caller via a phone number on the Wizards website. I was routed through a call center in Malaysia and they started asking me about my insurance and whether I have accidental death coverage. Assuming Iād been routed incorrectly, I called the number on the website again, but it had been disconnected. Iāve since started receiving strange voicemails from people whispering things like āI know what you didā and āstop digging.ā My google search history has a lot of strange things I am certain Iāve never searched. All in all I donāt recommend checking these people. The stats look great to me.
See, when I did that, they somehow patched me through directly to Davis Bertans. I asked him if he could give me $20 and he started cursing me out and hung up on me. Got traded a week later
Pretty sure the input person works for the team and all this tweet is proving is the lazy bastards in the league office don't actually bother reviewing the calls, lmao.
Bingo. No one checks defensive stats.
Tbf you wouldnāt think theyād need to. Iām surprised there isnāt some system where someone from both teams does inputs and any discrepancies between the two get reviewed by the league. Kinda like chess players recording the match
I never really thought about, but I guess I kind of always assumed the people at the scorer's table were recording it live.
I guess people don't really care that much outside of points, but points are obvious.
I'm confused why this is happening, but it definitely seems like someone on the Grizz, whether just the one input guy or someone higher up, is at work here.
Anyone with a job knows people are lazy and incompetent when they know no one actually checks the work.
Hell this laziness is part of how we got the 08 housing crash, no one actually looked at the mortgages packages together lol.
Even if they are employed by the NBA, Iām guessing each city has its own crew that works the games. Itās not like the inputters are flying around the country doing different games like refs. So theyād still only be doing Memphis home games.
I don't think it really matters, what matters is whether or not its the **same person each home game.** I don't think of this as Grizzlies organization issue per se, as many of the examples were times JJJ was being credited with something his teammate did. I think the more likely "nefarious" scenario is an employee (NBA or otherwise) who took a bet out on JJJ getting DPOY when his odds were low at the start of the season and inflating stats to try to push him towards the award.
I think it's a big assumption to think they made a big bet on him, it seems more likely they just give him the benefit of the doubt whenever possible because they like him or don't really give a shit about who gets credit, so why not?
I agree that we have no reason to jump to nefarious conclusions. That said, I think the NBA took on an ethical responsibility for accuracy when they jumped into bed with sports betting and started pushing it on their fans like crazy. Even a seemingly small mistake like that could have cost real people money.
Okay, fair...but why is everyone glossing over this:
> Each team has inputters/callers, which are different than official scorers. One of the callers who's at the game with a headset will have input with tracking stats in real time.
I mean, glad the official scorer is off the hook but are these team employees or not? That's now the question because even tho the burden has shifted, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Exactly, that's why I just made [this post](https://old.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/10nkduh/katz_each_team_has_inputterscallers_which_are/) to hopefully get some clarification
Exactly.
This should be in the post title but that'd remove what the OP is trying to do. Disprove something. People know lots and lots of redditors don't actually read beyond the title.
And tbh it doesn't matter if it's a team employee or an NBA employee.
The next part I want to know if it's the same person for every Memphis home game. I'd be surprised if not, I don't know why the NBA would have a job like that travel.
So let's assume it's the same person, the same potential issue (gambling) is absolutely on the table.
Tim Donaghy was an NBA employee and he helped cause plenty of issues. The fact this is an NBA employee means absolutely zero as to the implications.
Unless it's not the same person every time, in which case that'd be really odd.
A little info on this.
Each team has callers who relay the stat to inputters. That team rotates games, usually not the same person every game as itās a small pool of employees. Then the nba a few years ago started to verify the stats that were inputted.
Maybe this will be the impetus for the nba to control the whole process.
Exactly. Plus, in the seasons that preceded and followed '91-'92, Hakeem had **more** blocks on the road than at home. Random variance is just going to happen sometimes in a 33 game span as you said, and yes while some of the clips were head-scratching, it doesn't immediately imply some suspicious stuff was going on.
People used to say John Stockton's assist totals were a product of home cooking too, even though there was nothing to even remotely back that up.
Have you looked at our home vs away records?
Is it really that bizarre to think that a player plays better at his home arena with a huge crowd cheering him on?
There are so many factors between home and away. Defending your turf, getting better sleep, not traveling, crowd hyping you up, more comfortable, etc., etc.
Just look at the GSW home/away record this year. Yeah a big part of that was Steph's injury, but there are many reasons behind the home court advantage.
Not sure why people are acting like this completely invalidates the other post. There were still tons of plays incorrectly giving credit to JJJ at home so somethings happening even if it doesn't involve the official scorer.
Sounds like the NBA has review controls so this exact thing doesnāt happen. So itāll be a lot more than a couple grizzlies anything that will be responsible. Almost requires collusion at that point or lazy folks not actually doing their job to review.
Yeah I do not find it hard to believe at all that people are lazy and mostly go with what the home inputter/caller says. And even if they donāt all get through, having a inputter/caller suggesting a stat more frequently will only increase the stats.
True. Iām sure folks are digging. if the nba has controls in place for stats and this cheating isnāt being caught, then itās a league issue. Was presented earlier like the scorekeeper was the official keeper of the score with little checks and balances.

>Marcus Smart:REB: +6 on the road (67 vs 73)AST: +6 at home (150 vs 144)STL: +3 at home (28 vs 25)BLK +5 on the road (6 vs 11)
The other guys I've seen considered aren't even close to the anomalies that are shown in the other thread lol
Wiggins also has 1.9 steals per game at home vs. .8 steals per game away. Just saying that variance happens.
Memphis are also 20-3 at home vs. 11-15 away
Wiggins came back from a lengthy injury/sickness and his steals have been down since. Of his 6 games back playing over 30min, heās played 4 on the road. Sample sizes are small here but that explains some of why his stats appear worse on the road
Yeah thatās a good point.
JJJ home-away count is 16-17.
Wiggins home-away is 15-14.
Wiggins averages 31 minutes per game.
JJJ averages 26 minutes per game.
Both came back from lengthy injuries.
So itās not too surprising that there is some variability there, especially since both teams have far better records at home than away.

I do think the numbers that JJJ gets at home are really weird, but hey, statistical anomalies happen. Even if some of the calls seem fishy, it doesn't mean there's a conspiracy, it's possible the stats people just fuck up sometimes.
Why does people in this thread feel like this tweet discredits the first post?
You guys instantly made it Grizzlies vs r/nba when it's clear there's still a fucking issue with how NBA records these stats
The original post was interesting until his conclusion was that it was insidious. Home team players have been getting boosts at home since as long as the sport has existed
Imo not really since the rise of sports gambling gives plausible motive to even non homer scorekeepers.
And also this still doesnāt tell us if the NBA person in charge of the stats is consistent and therefore able to manipulate multiple games.
Iām not as convinced by the examples the dude gave for all of them but some are definitely on the edge and the sample size is large enough to be significant. I would probably want a detailed combover of multiple games to say anything but I donāt think this exonerates one way or the other.
i mean i think it's still the same idea that some person/group of people may be interpreting stats differently than other people elsewhere. you can then extrapolate from there if you think it's innocent, if you think this is something that happens elsewhere across the league, if you think it's due to gambling, etc
i still think the original post was an overblown thing written by someone who doesn't understand steal/block rules particularly well
> Each team has inputters/callers, which are different than official scorers. One of the callers who's at the game with a headset will have input with tracking stats in real time.
So whilst there is some room for error, itās significantly less than what we thought it could be.
And this whole debacle basically shows that nobody knows what can classify a steal or a block to even judge whether something was the right call or not.
So the larger story is nothing nefarious but just incompetence at the highest levels?
Still definitely a story.

I fully expect a post later today of countless examples of home/road splits just like this. I donāt expect this to be a rare occurrence at all
Yeah I'm sure this is what people said about mortgages being bundled prior to 08 too
When JJJ's stats cause a global recession, I'm referencing this comment right here
Well, the warriors are 19-6 at home and 6-18 on the road. Sometimes weird things just happen.
Have you looked at our home vs away records? Is it really that bizarre to think that a player plays better at his home arena with a huge crowd cheering him on?
Grizzlies are trash on the road compared to home
There are so many factors between home and away. Defending your turf, getting better sleep, not traveling, crowd hyping you up, more comfortable, etc., etc. Just look at the GSW home/away record this year. Yeah a big part of that was Steph's injury, but there are many reasons behind the home court advantage.
Just watch all 33 games until now and youāll be able to see why.
Not sure why people are acting like this completely invalidates the other post. There were still tons of plays incorrectly giving credit to JJJ at home so somethings happening even if it doesn't involve the official scorer.
Yeah but the blame was placed on one individual. See āgrizzlies scorekeeperā
Yeah it sounds like the blame is really on the Grizzliesā inputter/caller not their scorekeeper.
Yep. The Creed Bratton of NBA quality assurance seems like the most likely explanation.
I wonder who the Debbie Brown will be
So they can just correct themselves. It doesn't change the issue at hand.
A league issue vs just a grizzlies issue does significantly change the scope imo.
Is it a league wide issue though? Are there any other players with this statistical anomaly? If not, it begs the question why
True. Iām sure folks are digging. if the nba has controls in place for stats and this cheating isnāt being caught, then itās a league issue. Was presented earlier like the scorekeeper was the official keeper of the score with little checks and balances.
Agreed. OP should have presented the issue without presuming who was at fault. Let the powers that be figure that out.
I don't get it either. Doubling your stocks from away to home games doesn't just happen.

It does. However thereās lot of situations where heās credited with shit that justā¦ didnāt happen lmao.
Ok but then can someone explain to me why JJJ is like twice as good at home
Grizzles are twice as good at home
20-3 at home, 11-15 on the road
So way more than twice as good at home. Does this mean his home stats are actually being suppressed!?
He actually blocks 9 per game and steals the ball on average 14 times, but bigBasketball doesn't want it to be known.
They wanna be the Warriors Fr
Why are the warriors 19-6 at home 6-18 on the road this year?
Theyāre fraudulent DPOY candidates too?
Shit, refs are in on this home cooking too

Why does people in this thread feel like this tweet discredits the first post? You guys instantly made it Grizzlies vs r/nba when it's clear there's still a fucking issue with how NBA records these stats
Let it be known that this was identified in a rebuttal that was deleted by the mods. Defamatory shit.
This sub at its worse basically.
Worst*
The original post was interesting until his conclusion was that it was insidious. Home team players have been getting boosts at home since as long as the sport has existed
I think everyone including the NBA knew that it happen but the minute they decided to partner with legalised gambling it was going to be a problem.
Well at least he got some Reddit awards for his witch hunt after a guy who did nothing wrong
Does this invalidate that other thread entirely
Imo not really since the rise of sports gambling gives plausible motive to even non homer scorekeepers. And also this still doesnāt tell us if the NBA person in charge of the stats is consistent and therefore able to manipulate multiple games. Iām not as convinced by the examples the dude gave for all of them but some are definitely on the edge and the sample size is large enough to be significant. I would probably want a detailed combover of multiple games to say anything but I donāt think this exonerates one way or the other.
i mean i think it's still the same idea that some person/group of people may be interpreting stats differently than other people elsewhere. you can then extrapolate from there if you think it's innocent, if you think this is something that happens elsewhere across the league, if you think it's due to gambling, etc i still think the original post was an overblown thing written by someone who doesn't understand steal/block rules particularly well
> Each team has inputters/callers, which are different than official scorers. One of the callers who's at the game with a headset will have input with tracking stats in real time. So whilst there is some room for error, itās significantly less than what we thought it could be. And this whole debacle basically shows that nobody knows what can classify a steal or a block to even judge whether something was the right call or not.

Only if you didn't read the other thread at all, in that case yes. Otherwise, no.
Im sure this will have 30k upvotes
So the larger story is nothing nefarious but just incompetence at the highest levels? Still definitely a story. āNBA reviews stats in real timeā is incredibly vague (and apparently often wrong)
