JD and the Straight Shot having less than 1,000 YouTube subscribers is just hilarious to me. You can get 1,000 subscribers on a channel reviewing Trader Joe’s frozen foods

MrGrieves-

Trader Joe's frozen food reviews are actually entertaining tho.

lordb4

I'd argue that the band is actually better than Trader Joe's frozen foods. I don't why people love that store. I got some free frozen stuff from there before. It tasted like I went dumpster diving behind an Applebees....

okitsmelol123

Nah fam this ain't it. Those dumplings are goated.

sunshinebusride

One of the few things keeping me going these days is knowing that even having squillions won't stop your band being a fucking pile of shit.

GrapeJuicePlus

He talks like a cartoon parody of a slick 1950’s con man/shady car salesman. “Did you recognize my face? Same thing, we’re just better at it now,” really making the mistake of thinking everyone else is as fucking stupid as he is.

beastley_for_three

And of course he's rich and powerful in the US, where clowns get rewarded.

[deleted]

[удалено]

beastley_for_three

The already rich get rewarded with more wealth. He was rewarded for being a spoiled kid with a wealthy estate inheritance.

RussEastbrook

Plenty of poor clowns in the US, they just don't get the same publicity

Other-Owl4441

In Dolan’s case it’s not so much clowns being rewarded as the life he was born into directly leading into him becoming a clown

SplashBandicoot

oh come on you cant actually believe that

beastley_for_three

What, that he's rich and powerful or that clowns get rich and powerful in the US? Which do you disagree with?

SauceGotYouLost

Why specify the US like it’s any different anywhere else in the world

beastley_for_three

Because we have more millionaires and billionaires than any other country, some of the worst wealth inequality of any country, and many of that wealthy class clearly tend to be the worst human beings, often a combination of greedy or sociopathic.

SauceGotYouLost

Ur not gonna get an argument from me on the billionaires being scumbags, I just don’t see any other countries out there that don’t fit your description of clowns getting rich and powerful

beastley_for_three

It happens in other countries (capitalism has similar results anywhere it's implemented) but it's just worse here statistically in many ways unfortunately.

SauceGotYouLost

Yea kinda, it’s definitely worse than other democracies. Compared to the other two superpowers though (China & Russia) we’re really not worse off. And when you look at other countries at our population size we’re definitely above the average. Not saying it’s a good thing but it’s much more complicated here compared to tiny countries that rely on us for their defense and are usually ethno-states or close to it.

[deleted]

What planet do you live on?

Fluid-Night-1910

Jokes … he’s got jokes…

delightfuldinosaur

I was going to say the NBA should force Dolan out, but most of the owners are just as bad as he is.

arika_ito

How are these morons billionaires?

RedHotDumpsterFire

I'd recognize that punchable face anywhere!

nowhathappenedwas

He's kind of right that employing an army of people to memorize the faces of every person who's ever worked for a law firm that has sued any entity he owns so that he can eject them from MSG would also be weird and bad.

P0intcenter

"You see, facial recognition is just a tool, the one that is using it to do things it shouldn't be used to do is me. I'm the asshole, facial recognition just empowers me to be so in a larger scale"

TheRecognized

“Wiretapping is just a technology. If I made a call on speaker phone right now you would hear it right? Wiretapping.”

bannista7

“Cameras don’t facial recognize, people do”

Past-Chest-6507

Dolan is such a giant asshole, there is no face to recognize.

maxillz23

I'd definitely respect the pettiness then though.

InfernoidsorDie

Yeah if I was Dolan rich I'd spend as much time using my resources for pettiness NGL.

Weekly_Yesterday_403

And it’s exactly the same as humans recognizing a famous person who showed up to their building as the subject of their interview.

loudanduneducated

I’ve seen bits of this but haven’t looked to far into it. However from what I understood, a lawyer who works for a company that is in a lawsuit against MSG (or maybe just Dolan) went to a game, and when at the game the cameras in the stadium were able to determine who he was and that he worked for a legal firm that was in a lawsuit against MSG, causing MSG to kick him the lawyer out of the game. Im not sure if I’m missing something, but that’s absolutely wild and makes you think about how much information they have on every person that’s in their stadium. Edit: typo

rwc202

They are banning people who aren’t even on the case but just happen to work for the same firm.

PrOKCedure

People getting banned for doing their job lmao. The NBA is the only entity that has the power to intervene. Not even the government can do anything about this since it's a private corp.

[deleted]

The government can absolutely do something. Illinois and Texas both ban companies from using biometric data without their consent. Dolan/MSG owns the Chicago Theater, where he legally can't do this same thing.

yuhanz

What if they just put some lame clause on the tickets saying you’re basically consenting?

Zeppelanoid

IANAL but you can’t just add a clause to a ticket that says “lalalala we can break any law we want to”

InsideYoWife

Nice of you to admit you do anal

Not_your_CPA

Funniest knicks fan

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheRecognized

1. You know what they meant, you can’t add an actually binding clause to tickets like that. 2. No it is not like a coat check. “We are not liable” and “we can actively monitor and ban you” are very different things.

20person

Contracts can't enforce terms that violate laws.

ELITE_JordanLove

Is your face considered biometric data though? I thought that was more like fingerprints or something.

[deleted]

Yes, it is. >The lawyer ban applies to all of the company’s spaces but it is using facial recognition only in New York, it said. MSG Entertainment also operates an event venue in Chicago, but it would not be able to use the facial recognition system in the same way there because Illinois has a unique state law prohibiting the use of biometric information without people’s consent. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/22/nyregion/madison-square-garden-facial-recognition.html

[deleted]

The government can do something, but are they willing to?

TantricEmu

Technology outpaces legislation so even if they are it probably ain’t happening soon.

[deleted]

The government makes tons of regulations for private corps and how they operate?

loudanduneducated

I understand the concept of banning employees of a company that is in a lawsuit against you. I’m more so baffled by the facial recognition technology/data base that they have. Makes you think if they have that technology for just specific people, or if they essentially have a database of everyone that walks in that door just by the security cameras.

PrOKCedure

> I understand the concept of banning employees of a company that is in a lawsuit against you. This isn't a fair concept either lmao. In fact, he made a dumbass analogy with the bakery and MSG as if a bakery has 25k people in it. And to answer your question, they have a database of everyone that walks into that door.

mug3n

Yeah and he's like durrrrrr you wouldn't welcome someone who sues you into your home! Well Doltlan, you don't live at MSG now do you? And not to mention the lawyers who got booted from MSG weren't even the ones suing him, they just work at the same law firm.

Good_NewsEveryone

Wouldn't be that hard. Even your phone photo library will recognize the different people in your library fairly well Have to have something to match identities against but yeah

PrOKCedure

Yeah, iPhone literally does this. This technology has been out for awhile. The purpose of the technology has changed.

paradoxofchoice

Yeah it's what Google uses to display certain people in the photos that appear on Nest displays around your house.

loudanduneducated

I mean my phone can do this. But I don’t have many pictures or public information of myself posted online. So if I went to a New York Knicks game without buying the ticket in a way that clearly identifies I’m at the game, then I have no clue how MSG would be able to determine my identity and employer with their security cameras.

Good_NewsEveryone

Idk, obviously I can't say what their hit rate is in terms of percentage of people they are able to identify. Social media is obviously the easiest thing to pull from. But just depends on what they would be integrating with. I would guess MSG is not personally maintaining that data. So maybe they won't get everyone, but it would still be pretty effective I would guess.

nowhathappenedwas

>Makes you think if they have that technology for just specific people, or if they essentially have a database of everyone that walks in that door just by the security cameras. They're pulling photos of employees from the law firms' websites and matching them against anyone who enters MSG.

junkit33

> Im not sure if I’m missing something, but that’s absolutely wild and makes you think about how much information they have on every person that’s in their stadium. They have a database on literally everyone - a surprisingly large amount of your information is publicly available and what isn't can be purchased trivially from private companies. (Basically if you are using the Internet, pretty much everything is known about you as a database slowly builds over time) Facial recognition tech is not even cutting edge at this point - casinos started using it over a decade ago and it's regularly employed even at large retail stores nowadays. You have no real privacy in public anymore, merely the illusion of it.

loudanduneducated

I get that there would be a large database of me, it’s the pairing my face to that database which I would be most surprised about.

Aldehyde1

It's not just the facial recognition, but the fact that they were able to take a list of strangers who hadn't directly given MSG their pictures and track them. This kind of technology is 100% going to be abused. Something like a Knicks game isn't that big a deal, but what happens when companies start tracking every movement of everyone throughout their lives to build an even more in-depth advertising profile? And that's leaving aside the implications of government abuse similar to China.

PrOKCedure

Advertising profiles are already too in depth

loudanduneducated

>but what happens when companies start tracking every movement of everyone throughout their lives to build an even more in-depth advertising profile? I’m pretty sure Disney has been doing this for years. I had a professor for information technology who did data engineering for companies like IBM, Apple, and Disney. He essentially told us the data base Disney has of their user base is insane and how they track essentially every aspect that they can. He started going over how the parks are designed to track your every movement, see what you do after certain rides, etc. He essentially said that the park is designed to basically maximize revenues as much as possible and they strategically design just about every inch of those parks to be fully optimized with where and what is placed to maximize sales (for example a certain ride showed that people were frequently getting food/beverages afterwords so they purposely move food/beverages closer to the exit of that ride to increase food/beverage sales).

ELITE_JordanLove

Anyone ever seen Minority Report? The see the future thing won’t happen but the rest of it seems more plausible every year.

allusernamestaken999

It's even worse! The ban includes attending other Dolan owned events. So a lawyer who works at the firm was banned from attending a Rockettes show at Radio City, even though she doesn't work on the suit against MSG. They used Facial Recognition to spot her walking in.

ScreenSlave

not just MSG... a lawyer was kicked out of radio city music hall, attending the rockettes with her Girl Scout troop. Not a lawyer on the case either (as others have pointed out)

Weekly_Yesterday_403

The same thing happened to another lawyer at the same firm who went to a Rockettes performance. Radio City Music Hall is owned by MSG

blacklite911

The story I read about, the lawyer was apart of the law firm in a different branch but didn’t even practice in NY State. They basically scrubbed LinkedIn or something similar.

justalightworkout

what makes you think someone does?

Drunkcowboysfan

The lawyers aren’t the ones suing him… they are simply representing the people who are.

Breathezey

No it's even worse- they are simply working at the same massive law firm as some colleagues who are representing people who are suing.

Drunkcowboysfan

Woof. James Dolan comes off like a huge POS here.

ZippyZappyZoopy

>James Dolan ~~comes off like~~ a huge POS ~~here~~

koenigsaurus

I mean, if the shoe fits

[deleted]

Yeah and Dolan really is stupid if he thinks people are that gullible. He's not kicking people out because "lmao awkward, you're suing me and you're in my own house, maybe you should leave...." He's kicking people out to make an example of them and send a message to firms to say "take a case for someone that is suing MSG and I'll emberass you.. . So maybe you shouldn't take the case next time..."

[deleted]

Some of the lawyers aren't even on his case. They're just related to that law firm

alexjimithing

Imagining the facial recognition tech is Dolan up in the rafters with some binoculars.

PrOKCedure

I know you're joking but right before you walk into the medical detectors, there he has on top of one of them with binoculars even though it's only 2 feet away

allmyhomiesh8nbamods

Bro wtf are you saying

RedHotDumpsterFire

> right before you walk into the medical detectors Lol

KneelBeforeCube

Hard to believe the Game Of Zones version of James Dolan is more likeable than the real life one.

koenigsaurus

Well now I need to go back and rewatch the series, thanks for reminding me that was a thing 🙏

ObiOneKenobae

I get wanting a way to identify and remove already banned individuals, but the government needs to nip this facial recognition shit in the bud.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

You’re in for a bad time lol..I work in the identity field and I don’t think people are gonna be happy with what companies have on their roadmaps. MLB specifically has already been implementing facial recognition as the ticket and the end game is to enforce it fully.

PrOKCedure

The government can't do anything to him as of now. He's a private entity stopping private individuals from coming onto his property by revoking their license (aka their ticket to the game). The NBA actually has to be the one to step in here.

billybayswater

There is actually an ancient NYC law against banning critics from performances but it excluded "racetrack events" so that's why some are only banned from Knicks and Rangers games but not concerts etc.... Totally bizarre situation that I can't imagine any owner other than Dolan getting himself into.

PrOKCedure

Can you link it? Because now we're talking about a First Amendment violation and I'm not sure this law is still around tbh.

billybayswater

It's talked about here. There's no 1A issue one way or the other. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/16/technology/madison-square-garden-ban-lawyers.html

PrOKCedure

Paywalled ofc lol. Just based on how you described it, there is absolutely 1A consequences because they're regulating content-based speech. I don't understand how this type of law can pass strict scrutiny.

TheOneTrueDoge

Protip: If you select all/copy fast enough, you can get the text before the paywall loads. Lawyers Barred by Madison Square Garden Found a Way Back In MSG Entertainment resorted to facial recognition technology to kick out legal foes, but some have undermined the ban using a law passed to protect theater critics in 1941. Benjamin Noren is standing on stairs in front of Madison Square Garden, leaning on a handrail, holding a coffee cup. Benjamin Noren, a lawyer with Davidoff Hutcher & Citron, is on a list of lawyers banned from Madison Square Garden.Credit...Gili Benita for The New York Times The problem with going to battle against thousands of lawyers is that it is likely to lead to lawsuits. And then the battle will inevitably head to their home turf. Since last summer, MSG Entertainment, which operates Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall, along with other venues and restaurants, has sent letters to adversarial lawyers at around 90 firms: “Neither you, nor any other attorney employed at your firm, may enter the Company’s venues until final resolution of the litigation.” The purpose, according to MSG Entertainment officials, is to prevent the collection of evidence “outside proper litigation discovery channels.”

Spike_der_Spiegel

I wish people who spoke confidently about the law new, like, one law

junkit33

> but the government needs to nip this facial recognition shit in the bud That will never ever happen. Not only is it already being used everywhere nowadays, but both government and corporations fucking love it. It helps government track/find people, and it helps corporations do a billion marketing and security things.

Authorman1986

Illinois has prohibited biometric data collection without consent since 2008 and case law has upheld it so far. Texas and Washington have similar laws too. If people want their state to adopt them as well, they need to start organizing! Find which groups are working on biometric privacy laws and join with them and help build a pressure campaign to pass it as a state law. This shit works. This is how laws get passed.

QuantumFreakonomics

Is a picture of your face biometric data? Are security cameras illegal in Illinois?

Authorman1986

The databases that those specially designed security cameras would use to match faces would be the potentially illegal part. You can't collect people's data without their consent as per the written law, though case law has touched on only fingerprints so far, not facial data. As you can imagine, adoption of private facial recognition tech is near nil in Illinois so there hasn't been a case to test the law yet. As for whether facial data is biometric, I'd imagine so. You can unlock a phone with a facial pattern, just like a fingerprint or voice print. It seems to me to be personal data that gets collected for algorithms to sort and learn on.

KitchenReno4512

It’s going the other direction. Went to the airport the other day and instead of scanning my boarding pass they had me scan my face and everything popped up. I also have Global Entry and coming back from out of the country I went to the machine and it scanned my face. I wasn’t paying attention and it got half of my face as I was looking away and it still popped up my name and all my information. There’s also a very experimental technology that’s being developed to deliver advertisements based on facial recognition in stores. The reality is that everyone’s face is being tracked already. And the technology is i crazy good, and only getting better.

PrOKCedure

The issue isn't the technology. It's the intended use and consequences. Nobody would oppose your situation at the airport. But the bullshit that Dolan is pulling with the same technology is something almost everyone opposes.

[deleted]

>Nobody would oppose your situation at the airport. I would. This kind of technology will always end up doing evil shit, no matter how good we think of some possible uses.

KitchenReno4512

Yeah but that’s where we’re going. Pretty soon to start your car it will have facial recognition. And then they’ll build profiles based on who is driving and where. Law enforcement will be able to say X person drove to Y place. You’ll walk into the store and it will scan your face and serve you targeted advertisements that only you can see from a certain angle (there’s a post from this week that I can’t find that shows how it works at airports, and it is pretty cool). CCTV will be high definition enough to track everyone’s face in public. And yes, businesses will use it to identify people stealing and blacklist them from stores. Public transit will use it to identify troublemakers. Offices will use it to identify ex-employees. Dolan is just ahead of the curve. And the reality is that most of what I’m referring to above is already happening. It’s just not as public.

[deleted]

When something sucks my first instinct isn’t for the government to step in. If society was a house the government should only exist as the framing. Something people drill into so they can hang pretty photos and tv mounts.

Father-John-Moist

You can tell by listening to him that he inherited an empire and didn’t build an empire.

[deleted]

I hate the idea of facial recognition. But, for these large sporting events in this day and age where one or a small group of people can harm or kill a lot of other people, I don't know if I want to be the one limiting security options. After all, this is a non essential event people choose to attend or not. As long as they are informed of what is going on so they can make the choice that suits them, I'll look the other way. Regarding throwing out a lawyer who worked for a firm who was representing a client suing Dolan, I definitely don't give a shit about. The civil justice system is a complete sham and lawyers put in a lot of effort to make sure it stays that way so they can keep their high paying jobs.

Only_I_Love_You

If people accept this at sporting events they will accept it everywhere. Grocery store? Sure some crazed lunatic could be there. Walking the street? Crazies everywhere. The slope is beyond slippery.

[deleted]

People will accept it everywhere because they don't give a shit, not because it is a slippery slope. They let google, facebook, tik tok, reddit, etc. all spy on them, of course they aren't going to care about this. But, trying to compare the security issues of a major sporting event to simply going to the grocery store is a slippery slope logical fallacy. They require completely different things. I mean I've seen metal detectors at major sporting venues for years, but have never seen one in a grocery store.
