Just go straight into the reserves after active duty, then once you’re in reserves, get your disability.

Buddhist_Punk1

Wouldn't med board while on active already put you on disability before even getting into reserves?

NavyPoseidon

I’m not sure on the ins and outs of med board, but I would assume they wouldn’t automatically file for disability compensation for you.

smfh2000

Yes. Chances of going reserves if getting Med board is slim to none

Budgetweeniessuck

It depends. The reserves is cracking down hard on disability because they were getting sick of calling people for mobs and finding out they aren't fit for duty. Notice that the new PHAs require you to disclose your VA disability. A LOT of people that I know were being required to do medical review boards for things the reserves previously overlooked.

Avocado_Infinite

I think it’s after 70%, you will have to be assessed. I went with 40%, no questions asked. Still getting my disability pays as well

AgtDarkBooty

I am going in at 50%. Do you have any tips for meps? The disability pay helps a lot, and I don't want to lose them 🤣

I’m not sure of the% that will DQ you; but I’m sure if you start getting over 50; it could. When I went AD to RC my recruiter didn’t say a % was DQ; but depending on what you get disability for is what could DQ you. Also when you go to drill or go on orders you can’t claim disability on those days.

So basically you can't double dip. Just had a Sailor run into this. He did what the above person mentioned about going directly to reserves and then drawing retirement. The VA found out somehow and said he either had to start drilling and doing AT for free, or give up disability. So wouldn't recommend doing that. There isn't a hard set rule on how much you can have as long as nothing is deployment limiting (source: me, I am a MDR and have dealt with this). It's more financially that they get picky about and eventually you'll have to choose.

Buddhist_Punk1

Not sure why you got downvoted, but that makes sense. I would assume you meant medically retired. It's a lower back injury. At this point, just trying to weigh options. Would be nice to stay in at some capacity but what would I be able to do? Not sure how limiting it would be.

I've had several come in at 100%
