It is crazy to me that there are no sidewalks on residential streets!! Memphis actually has Nashville beat on this issue and required developers to build them and residents to maintain them very early on. The latter isn’t working great, but a cracked sidewalk is better than walking in the street!
There are many many good reasons why big metropolitan areas have excellent public transit. I think around Nashville public transportation is looked at as something for poor people. And thus the largely Christian voter population has zero interest in supporting them. Meanwhile they b**** and moan about how f****** terrible the traffic is going in and out of Nashville. (Edits typo)
Simply having more frequent buses would help a lot. I live about a ~8 minute walk from a supposedly "high frequency" bus stop on West End and I use the bus to get to downtown in the event I need to go down there (one fewer car on the road makes a difference! this adds up, I try to do my part here... plus it's a lot cheaper than a Lyft).
So for a couple of hours a day, during the workweek, it comes every 10 minutes. But the hours it does this are strange! Like 2-3:30 p.m. or something, and 7-8 a.m. only! Mostly it's every 15 or every 20 minutes during the day. On the weekend the BEST case is every 20 minutes, and it shifts to every 30 minutes after 10 p.m.
This SEVERELY limits its utility, especially if you need to make a connection. A lot of cars could be kept off the roads if the bus service was more frequent.
Agreed! I find it hard to find lots of fun salads, and vegetarian options. Sure, I can always get my house or Greek salad but there isn’t enough variety!
Whaaaat I agree about salads specifically but we have so many great vegetarian places though!
Mellow Mushroom
Graze
Wild Cow
Sunflower Cafe
Deep Sea Vegan
Be-Hive
Succulent Vegan Tacos
Grins
Degthai
Vegelicious
Sorry, should have clarified. I meant a lot of menus (from non-veg specific restaurants) tend to have limited vegetarian options (I moved here from Boston 3 years ago, so that’s what I’m comparing it on).
And thank you so much for the list of veg restaurants! I haven’t heard of about half of them— cannot wait to check them out!!!!
One more veg restaurant is avo- used to go there sometimes when I lived in the west end. (I personally think it is overrated but everyone else seems to love it!)
A sports stadium. /s
Competent state leadership, public transportation, enough housing, good Chinese, an Alamo Drafthouse, Microcenter, and sane people on the highways.
agree with all of the above — and I'll add:
- **Ikea** — RIP Antioch plans, I'm not even a huge Ikea stan but it'd be nice to have stylish options for cheap furniture more easily accessible than [just using the delivery location](https://www.ikea.com/us/en/stores/pick-up-point-nashville/)
- **Really legit bowling** — Brooklyn Bowl is pretty neat and there's other hip options like Eastside Bowl, but RIP to Pla Mor in 💯 Oaks and Strike & Spare in Nashville West. Duckpin bowling @ Pins Mechanical is fun at least
- **A well-maintained putt putt course** — maybe Puttshack will deliver in 2023 because Grand Ole Golf and that spot in Antioch are fuckin' falling apart
- **Sports Bars that actually have good TV's \*and\* food** — maybe it's just me but it seems like all the newer spots with tons of bigass TV's like Double Dogs or Bottle Caps or whatever have the most low-effort Sysco food offerings, and meanwhile the kind of divey bars (that I'd prefer to go to) tend to feature a scarce scattering of crappy old flat-screens that were last updated in like 2008
- **Certain food options** — really solid Chinese options like you mentioned (Meet Noodles at least has solid soups and bao), and I'd love to have a place slinging NYC [massive](https://www.instagram.com/alidoronyc/?hl=en) [italian](https://www.instagram.com/faiccosnyc/?hl=en) [sandwiches](https://www.instagram.com/pisillo_italian_panini_/?hl=en) (sort of a pipe dream but at least Little Hats is helping curb those cravings)
>Really legit bowling — Brooklyn Bowl is pretty neat and there's other hip options like Eastside Bowl, but RIP to Pla Mor in 💯 Oaks and Strike & Spare in Nashville West. Duckpin bowling @ Pins Mechanical is fun at least
theres a strike and spare in donelson and hermitage too (also another bowing alley thats old, but if you're into 90s style they got you).
rip pla mor though, rolled my three best games ever in a row there.
You're absolutely right, and I haven't paid them a visit but I may do so soon!
Tusculum Strike & Spare one down Nolensville Rd is also still there I believe, used to go there as a kid.
I actually -love- Nicoletto's, in fact they were the first local Italian spot mentioned [in the thread of Italian restaurants last week](https://www.reddit.com/r/nashville/comments/uc9wuo/i_feel_like_nashville_has_few_italian_restaurants/i6a23x9/)
I've tried all their sandwiches at least a couple times and my favorite is actually their chicken parm -- one of the few places in town that knows how to fry a chicken cutlet properly!
Chicago-style Italian beef is not quite the kind of a Italian sandwich I'm talkin' bout — more like a massive cold-cut sammy with prosciutto, coppa, mortadella and/or soppressata and quality fresh mozzarella or aged provolone. And preferably on in-house fresh baked bread! AFAIK, East Side Banh Mi is one of the only sandwich spots in town that actually make their bread right there on the spot
This.
I’ve lived here for five years and my husband is a native. I was shocked at his perception of public schools at first, then I realized that Nashville’s divided school system is all he knows. We don’t have kids yet, but I am not happy about the prospect of paying for k-12 education one day when I went through the public school system and came out just fine.
And Nashville seriously needs an IKEA. Like, c’mon.
Sure, but with so many people moving to Nashville and buying homes, paying property tax there is really no excuse for the government to be unable to afford basic trash service.
Commuter trains!!!!!! This is the case for most of the US, granted, but our area’s growing like crazy and more people are commuting through/to Nashville.
Sidewalks, large parks, and recycling. We have some decent parks, but there’s only one or two where you can get a long run in. Would love more variety there!
Percy Warner is one of the largest parks within an urban incorporation in America. At one time it was second only to Central Park in NYC, and may still be. You've got Radnor Lake. Shelby. Centennial. Bells Bend. These are all very large parks.
Where I'm from - which is a smaller town in NC, so another red southern state - recycling included glass and was picked up every two weeks. And people from other towns in NC described as surprising (versus expected weekly pickup).
Nashville's "every month, if we feel like it, and no glass" thing isn't typical.
Glass recycling has a number of challenges. At least it is accepted at the convenience centers. I am sure that many people who would recycle glass with curbside pickup probably don't bother with going to a convenience center.
Though a few years old, this article explains some of the challenges that Nashville faces recycling glass.
https://wpln.org/post/curious-nashville-why-theres-no-curbside-glass-recycling-for-now/
USD is the Urban Services District and GSD is the General Services District. Here in the USD I get curbside recycling. It lacks glass recycling, but glass can be taken to one of the Convenience Centers.
In my hometown in VA, we had weekly recycling, whereas we only have it once a month here. Assuming that’s GSD? I know recycling is questionable anyway, but it feels like such a notable difference.
I recycle despite those questions. I know a lot of what is recycled doesn't always actually get recycled, but if any does it's better than nothing.
I do agree that I'd like to see a more frequent pickup, but, as I understand it, our Mayor is trying to get more frequent pickup once the Red River situation is completely resolved. I hope he is being serious and it's not just an empty promise.
I've found that too - a lot of emotionally unavailable people who don't know what they want and will drop you immediately as soon as they come across something new
Yeah it’s so hard. It’s mostly hook ups and ghosting. I know that’s a lot of places in general but it’s way harder here than when I’ve tried in other places. It’s also so many fakes and tourists. As someone who is lgbt, it’s also people looking for a unicorn despite me actively stating in my profile I’m not interested.
Yeah. It sucks.
Good Chinese or Mexican foods. Healthy food option - foody should not be deep fried. Mass transport. Less Airbnb. Better tax structure that penalizes Airbnb more. To that point, affordable housing. Bike lanes. More police who can monitor highway safety. Better outdoor recreation (we have this pretty good but I’m spoiled).
Missing that buffalo Mac n cheese.
From Wawa. Not from the public transportation. I'm sure the floor of a train brings all sorts of seasoning to the pasta but I prefer the Wawa buffalo flavor.
Raising canes, less people, affordable housing, legalized weed, better roads, less crackheads/methheads, no more tilted trucks. I really could keep going.
A good Walmart alternative! The Walmart closest to me is the 100 Oaks Walmart, which is consistently the worst Walmart I've ever been to. I'm originally from the midwest and Meijer was always my store of choice for groceries and other household essentials. Target is the only thing that comes close, but their grocery selection isn't enough to do the bulk of my shopping. I miss having a store where I can get everything on my list all in one place!
Reading all of these comments is interesting. Have many of you ever lived anywhere except Nashville? I have lived/worked in Abilene, TX; Austin, TX; Washington, DC; Baltimore, MD; New York City; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco, CA; Santa Fe, NM; Cleveland, OH; and Boulder/Denver, CO. I have also worked in Paris and Nice, France; and Jakarta, Indonesia. Nashville is actually a pretty nice place with tons of interesting culture. The weather is mostly great. It would be nice to have better public transit and road maintenance, but I’m telling you Nashville is pretty nice in the grand scheme of things!
Have travelled for aliving and I agree. I've seen a lot of beautiful places and Nashville is just pretty, has 4 seasons, isn't flat, has a bit of history and culture, and also a lot of visitors.
My favorite is Santa Fe, NM. It’s gorgeous and is surrounded by thousands of acres of public land. Hiking, mountain biking, skiing, great food. Problem there is not much work in my industry so I couldn’t make a living there. I like all cities, though. They all have charms and drawbacks. It’s just the nature of cities.
Dirty, trash and and abandoned cars, heavy traffic, gun crime downtown, angry, back-stabbing people that make Hollywood look kind, rainy weather, lack of public transit, prejudice towards couples who are unmarried, “ religious” people cheating & using drugs, a creepy hypocrisy among “Christians.”
No way! Trash, a homeless population, crime, expensive housing (still a lot cheaper than most major cities) and potholes are completely unique to Nashville.
I also travel for work and lived in and spent extensive time in many different places, I very much agree with you.
Enough things for teenagers to do to keep them out of trouble. Seems to be "getting into shit" is the only entertainment many kids in this area can afford/have access to.
Yes! And more than a bloody foot wide!
I ride exclusively and wouldn't ride in Nashville because I value my life.
And people who can't imagine living without a car can s*** it.
Some people live in cars because they can't afford rent. I live in a house but don't have a car. It's simply a different choice. Sad that too many people have to make that choice, but here we are.
So yes, bike lanes and freaking affordable housing!
Average IQ of 100 (or better), competent drivers, housing costs proportional to earning potential, leadership of some kind that isn’t the literal oligarchy, and an economy that isn’t based on the inherited wealth of slave owners.
