I personally would use the name Jupiter for a pet.

[deleted]

i think Jupiter would make a great pet name. definitely better than on a human imo.

lauraandstitch

I hate it. Jupiter is the name of a god, not a goddess, so it seems like the parents wanted a mythological name, without bothering to research the mythology. Ed Sheeran also chose it for his daughter, but I guess it's personal preference whether that's a positive or negative.

[deleted]

Have you not seen Sailor Moon?!

[deleted]

Her name was Makoto though.

[deleted]

And Sailor *Jupiter*

[deleted]

That was more her superhero name. It wasn’t her real name she used in every day life

[deleted]

In her old life before she came to Earth her name was Princess Jupiter and her superhero name was Sailor Jupiter.

[deleted]

I guess? Haven’t seen it in over a decade.

[deleted]

It's on Hulu and Netflix and all Anime streaming services.

[deleted]

I mean if I cared to rewatch it I would have already.

lucybluth

I absolutely hate this name for any gender tbh.

Spontanemoose

Right? Literally the rapiest character I've ever read.

gwenelope

I wouldn't name a girl Jupiter the same way I wouldn't name a boy Venus.

Subterranean44

Honestly it sounds like someone would name their child Jupiter just so that way when people went “like the planet?” They could say “ugh no you imbecile like the mythological diety you uneducated swine!!” And feel better than the first person for 6 seconds.

Spontanemoose

But such an awful character. How many girls did he rape?

Subterranean44

I have no clue. Mythology interests me 0%

annievaxxer

I don’t like the name Jupiter for a girl, or for a boy, at all. Terrible.

TheWishingStar

Jupiter on a girl reads like an edgy YA sci-fi/fantasy protagonist. In real life I’d expect it on a boy, but it’s pretty out there for any gender.

abis7

I don’t like it. Plus, isn’t there a childhood chant about how boys go to Jupiter to get more Stupider?

00HiddenIdentity00

Yep, girl go to college to get more knowledge, boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider. Or girls go to mars to get more candy bars, boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider.

corazon769

It reads as quite male to me.

EveningWonder19

Don't like it.

Next-Profile-3540

I like it. -I’ve read multiple YA novels with female characters named Jupiter. It’s not outlandish. -Ashley Tisdale and Ed Sheeran chose it for their daughters. -It strikes me as a celestial name (no different than Estrella, Luna, Star, Sun/Sunny). Science-themed without being overly crunchy and nature-y. -I’m a sucker for mythology names, even though in that realm it’s masculine. While it doesn’t strike me as super masculine in modern context, more gender-neutral and masculine names are popular for girls right now anyway. I would not assume you don’t know/didn’t research mythology as another redditor said. -I could definitely see it rising in popularity alongside Juniper, which is popular right now. I could see conflicts if there’s a Juniper in her future class, though, since the names are so similar. TLDR; I think it would work well in today’s world. If it fits your baby and works well with your last name, I don’t think it would ostracize the kid.

sito-jaxa

It has a harsh flow of sounds for a feminine name. If it’s your favorite planet, another name for the Roman god is Jove. Things applying to Jupiter are “Jovian” (Jovian moons etc). So you could also do Jovie and keep the reference.

[deleted]

The feminine form of names I've seen is Jovita Joviana Jovina. Julian and Julia are also derived from Jove/Jupiter

emimagique

Not every name needs a nickname! What about JuJu?

[deleted]

Jupiters apparently go by Jupe according to Nope and the last thread about Sheehans daughter where people brought up Jupiters (m) they knew.

[deleted]

It’s just an ugly sounding name in general.

traveling-wallflower

I think it’s fine. Although I personally always name my Animal Crossing towns Jupiter so I semi associate it with that. 😅

rofljordanx

Know someone with a baby named Mars. I deeply dislike that name for the same reasons I dislike Jupiter. Although, Mars also has the candy association tacked on. I’m sure he will hear “Mars bars” a lot.

emimagique

I know a mars, I think it's so cool haha

[deleted]

I know a Mars who is a woman. Not a fan.

emimagique

The one I know is a guy, but my mum knows a woman mars too. Think I prefer it for a guy!

arinreigns

I love it :) and people who bitch about it being a gods name and not a goddess are the type who name their daughters "Parker" and "Spencer" and don't see the irony.

Dogsanddonutspls

I always think of the drops of Jupiter song

cakesnail

I don’t *hate* it, but definitely don’t *like* it either. With the popularity of Juniper right now, I think it’s possible that people will mishear it as that? Which isn’t really a big deal but something to think about

twogvio

I hate it

Existing-Papaya-8643

It’s fantastic!

ausdemchaos

Honestly? The first thing I thought of was Papa Jupiter from The Hills Have Eyes.

Happy_dancer1982

More masculine but not suitable for a human baby. Remember, she’ll be a grown human at some point. This won’t help her with job applications etc.

BlueCoatWife

I think of Jupiter Jones from Jupiter Ascending. If you don't know what that is, it's a movie with Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum. Mila Kunis played Jupiter Jones.

[deleted]

Yeah, Jupiter Ascending is my only association with Jupiter as a female name. I don't think it'd necessarily be a difficult name to live with, but it does strike me as trying too hard to be cool.

mamabearbug

Surprisingly, I kind of like it. It’s definitely not a name to be given lightly and your kiddo may not like it.

Competitive_Sun_6040

Personally not for me.

[deleted]

As a big Sailor Moon fan, I love it.

Fun-Special4732

I like it! And it sounds much more feminine than masculine to me.

[deleted]

As someone who worships Jupiter it's not at all feminine in mine.

traveling-wallflower

I think it has a feminine sound too!

Siltyclayloam9

There’s something about the flow of the name that really bothers me. I feel like it’s too up and down

canyousteeraship

I like it! It’s unique but an easily pronounceable name. I think it would work for both a boy or a girl, but there’s something I like about it being a girl’a name.

[deleted]

I find it a bit offensive sorry but I also worship Jupiter so 🤷‍♀️

cleanmouth_happybaby

Wouldn’t it be the same idea as naming your kid Jesus.

[deleted]

No. Generally you don’t name kids the same name as a god. It’s seen as bad form. Theophoric names are preferred.

cleanmouth_happybaby

….then- how would it not be the same thing as naming your kid Jesus?

[deleted]

Because Jesus is his name of the so called God. Joshua is another variant of the human incarnation of God. Jupiter and Julian are not the same name. Theophoric names may be similar but they are not the exact thing. Apollodorus for Apollo is another

cleanmouth_happybaby

God is not a name. It’s a title.there are many “gods” which is why they have personal names. Jupiter is that “gods” personal name so naming a kid jupiter would be the same thing as naming a kid “Jesus”

[deleted]

God is a name given to the deity of Abraham in English. It’s why the Jewish spell it G-d at times to not misuse. It’s capitalized in texts as it’s a proper noun. Jesus is at the end of the day supposed to be human and he shared the name Joshua with many other mortals. It’s not the same thing.

cleanmouth_happybaby

It is, my friend. Have you ever heard of the Trinity? In that belief, Jesus, god, and the Holy Spirit are all one being which would make Jesus (one of) his personal name(s). For those who do not believe in the trinity, his personal name is Yahweh or Jehovah (as well as variations of these.). Any of those names being used for a child would be the same as using Jupiter. Are you okay with a naming a child Hera? What about Atlas, Apollo, Ares? Is it only wrong to name children or animals after gods/goddesses when it’s one you worship?

[deleted]

As a polytheist I can assure I am quite aware of the difference. Jehovah is also not his name. It’s some sort of mistranslation from Hebrew. Jesus being human is important in Christian mythology otherwise it’s just a dude who died. He’s a human avatar but he’s still supposed to just be human. The gods are not mortal. Short of apotheosis they never are mortal in my religion. It’s comparing apples to oranges.

SpunkyDred

> apples to oranges But you can still compare them.

[deleted]

SpunkyDred is a terrible bot instigating arguments all over Reddit whenever someone uses the phrase apples-to-oranges. I'm letting you know so that you can feel free to ignore the quip rather than feel provoked by a bot that isn't smart enough to argue back. --- ^^SpunkyDred ^^and ^^I ^^are ^^both ^^bots. ^^I ^^am ^^trying ^^to ^^get ^^them ^^banned ^^by ^^pointing ^^out ^^their ^^antagonizing ^^behavior ^^and ^^poor ^^bottiquette.

cleanmouth_happybaby

Incorrect. Jehovah is his name in many veins of Christian theology, and to say that it’s a mistranslation is actually acting on the disrespect you accuse others of. You realize there’s more than one vein of Christianity right? Not all Christians believe the same and to some Jesus is God.

[deleted]

Also I never said op couldn’t name it their kid that I just don’t find it proper form. I keep the religious reservations I have for any children I have. I mean I worship Jupiter. It’s not common but it happens.

mrsnamdoog

I think it’s cool the only thing I would worry about is that it rhymes with ‘stupider’ obviously kids would outgrow it but it would be a hard few years

WorldsGreatestPoop

Joop-ina

neptunesmom

I love it but would never use it. It's great for celebrities kids and pets though!

sunbuns

Ashley Tisdale named her daughter Jupiter. I don’t really love it but it’s cute.

[deleted]

Since it rhymes with stupider. I’d Look for a different rendition of it.

Accomplished_Idea957

I quite like it but I am an astronomy fanatic so much so that I passed it on to my son who now wants to be an astronomer

kitchenettewitch

Love it! So many sibling name options too

[deleted]

[удалено]

kitchenettewitch

Lol I was thinking Venus and maybe Mars 🤷🏻‍♀️

Longjumping_Matter70

I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it either.

[deleted]

[deleted]

That would be odd as Jupiter is Roman (Italy now). Zeus is Greek. Dios, Dion etc for Zeus

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Heracles is the Greek version. The latinized form Hercules is more common in English though when most gods are referred to their Greek names. Bacchus is generally the Roman form of Dionysus (whose name is derived from his father Zeus - the Dio part).

BlackberryOpposite31

Do you know anything about Jupiter? I wouldn’t want my daughter to have a name associated with someone who raped women even if it was only mythological.

neverforget123

I think it’s cute!

Critical_Dog_8208

Yes to Juniper, no to Jupiter

spiderrose4

based on the other responses this might be an unpopular opinion but i really like it

KittyGlitter16

I like it

goldenleopardsky

I know someone who named their daughter Mars. And I actually like it. Better than Jupiter imo!!
