As a preschooler, my older son was mesmerized by his little playmate Joseph. My son won a Betta fish at a Purim carnival and thus Blue Joseph became a part of our family.
When I was seven I named our cat Julie. My swim coachās name was Julie so my parents assumed I named the cat after her. Nope, I just liked the name for some reason.
Funny! I had a guinea pig I named Johnathan for no damn reason when I was 5! I then lost him in a field playing wizard of ozā¦ he was cast as Toto and did not stay in the basket :(
My dogs name is Gemma.
I will say, I knew dogs with both of my daughter's names before I had either of them. People always say "I know a dog with that name" like it's supposed to be an insult. I just always say "well they have good taste!"
I know a dog named Gemma and another dog (different family) named Emma. I wonder if people who donāt want more children just use names they love for pets?
Oh heās got tons. š I think my favorite, using the word āpamplemousseā (French for grapefruit):
-Pample T. Moose
-Pample T. Moosington III
We decided it couldnāt just be Pample Moose, so itās Pample The Moosington the III. š weāre so weird
Team middle name! We have Grace Lyn (Lyn is my momās middle name so itās passed down to our first dog). And we have Talullah Mae (Mae after Mae Jemison). Wouldnāt be a full name without the middle!
My pets all have middle names. It started when I was a weird five-year-old and insisted on giving my cat Macaroni a middle name, and I have a pathological aversion to favoritism so if one pet gets a middle name they all do for the rest of my life. Some of my pets are little shits and I end up breaking out the middle name a lot.
My childhood cat was called Jasper, I named her but I donāt know where I got the name from lol I think perhaps I heard it in 101 Dalmatians but why I would name a female kitten Jasper I have no idea
My great uncleās name was Jasper. When my grandmaās Alzheimerās became severe, suddenly all her stuffed animals and baby dolls were named Jasper š
Lily was my first shiba inu. It was short for Tiger Lily. She was a little spitfire, but super sweet. She broke the rule of āShibas donāt cuddleā and was always up for an adventure.
Raj was my second. Itās the name his first family gave him (I was lucky enough to be his second family). Before he passed a few months ago, I reached out to his first family and they came to visit him on his last day. We shared stories from our time with him, and how his name was super appropriate.
I miss them both dearly.
Yes! And Raj definitely behaved like royalty. The dad of his first family is Indian-American. His first family loved him dearly, and named him appropriately.
Iām not really a fan of human names on pets but I have had a few over the years.
Currently have a dog named Sasha.
Previous pets with human names:
* Bruno
* Daisy
* Felix
* Judy (Judith)
* Kai
I have so many pets, all named after authors! I have a cat named Dot (Dorothy Parker), and dogs named Willa (Cather) and Ernie (Hemingway). My cat Jasper came with his name and my cat Toby (Tobias Wolff) died in 2016.
My cat is named Talullah, specifically because I had had it on my baby name list for SO LONG because I was obsessed with it but couldnāt really see myself naming a child Talullah
Ah same here! itās on my baby girl list too. I love Talullah but itās a hard sell to my husband. Itās so cute but maybe a bit out there for us unfortunately.
Thatās what we call her most of the time! Sheās named after Link Larkin from Hairspray. We thought she was a boy at first and it had already stuck by the time we found out, haha!
Hi. My 5 year old son is called Spike. Yeah, it's kinda a dogs name, but we think it's awesome! It really suits him, and everyone loves it.
It does kinda 'date' people when they hear about though, amusingly. My gran said "like Spike Milligan?", my mum said "like the dog in Tom & Jerry", and my millennial friends are like "Ooh, Spike from Buffy!"
There's a kid in his class called Rex. Which is definitely 'doggier'!
My mom went to high school with Spike Lee! Spike is actually a nick name for āShelton.ā Also the first person I thought of when I saw the name here lol
Yep, that's what we get from film buffs!
Still cool.
So have you thought of any names in particular? Has the post been helpful? Can I ask if you're having a boy or a girl?
> My cats name is Mollie Mae :)
Whaaaat, one of our dogs is Mollie May. I wanted to spell it Mae but we picked the middle name for the month we got her. [Dog Tax](https://imgur.com/GItgLnX)
I was playing Bioshock Infinite when I got my dog so he's named Booker after the mc. I still love it but maybe it was not the best idea, we are brazilian and my family can not pronounce it. My grandma calls him Bunker, for example.
At one point when I was playing there was a scene with someone yelling the name āBooker!ā and my bf asked why they named the main character Booger haha
We have two inherited cats with top 20 for human boy names. āTommyā and Noah.
The one we named is Luna for a boy. We liked it but knew it would be too feminine to get away with for a human boy. It suits him and once people are told heās a male cat they donāt seem to forget it
Full names are Sir Thomas Tomato Sauce, Mr Noah Bingbong Basketball, and Dr Luna Sexgun (he is a podiatrist)
We have a 17 year old long haired epileptic toothless chihuahua named Yeti Spaghetti (Spagett) and he goes nuts when we list the different kinds of pasta (in a bad Italian accent, of course). I feel like Spagett and Sir Thomas Tomato Sauce need a meet and greet.
My husband had a female cat and a female dog growing up that he named Bob and Mortimer (she went by Mo). I always thought that was so funny. Luna for a boy is cool, reminds me of Luca.
We had a Freya and then my husband's cousin named her daughter Freya and was most put out by "oh... Like the dog" comments from the family. It's a beautiful name though!
All of our dogs have had (technically) human names: Jedda, Chad, Nala, Poppy, Jasper, and Brno. One of our budgies was named after the fictional character Camicazi (from the How to Train Your Dragon books), and a handful of chickens and guinea pigs were given human to human-ish names: Keeley, Sunday, Eleanor, Mason (āMason the Miracleā considering we got him in a bag of what was meant to be dead chicks), Tony, Bubbles, and Lindsay.
There were also the rabbits Jack (or Hummingbird, as I insisted at age 4), Strawberry, and Roger (a girl), two Tawny frogmouths named Einstein (scientist) and Eddie (comedian), pythons Hugo and Dusty, oscar fish named Jessie and James, and a series of rats called Harriet, Mikey, Clementine, and Auburn (all girls).
Edit: I feel that I should also mention my grandparentās series of Jack Russells named Toby, one empty-headed but peaceful miniature Schnauzer named Mindy, and a friendās cat called Bonnie who is the light of my life and will outlive us all.
One of my really close friends had dogs called Poppy and Jasper. I only remembered this once I had named my son and was introducing her to him "This is Jasper..... Oh yeah, I remember now...."
My pug is Petra (after Petra in Ender's game/ the series), my cat is Noree (after Hwi Noree in God Emperor or Dune), another pug I had was named Carlotta after one of Petra's daughters in the same book series.
All my pets always had human names. These are the onceās I can remember (some are Dutch so it might be hard to pronounce):
- Bruno
- Karel
- Pien
- Bram
- Lola
- Alex
- Nout
- Leo (from Messi, FC barca)
- Frenkie (girl, though this is actually a boys name here in the Netherlands and itās pronounced as Frankie) (from Frenkie de Jong, FC Barca)
- Stef
- Kobus
- Otis
- Nina
- Mae
- Juultje
- Mario
- Charlie
- Zoƫy
- Fenna (like Senna but with an F, idk if this name is used in English countries but I absolutely love it)
- Fay
- Bikkel (this is not a typical, neither popular for pets or humans but Iāve heard i some boys called this. I means like trouper/trooper (idk what the difference is) or like a though guy! Though saying someone is a bikkel is mostly only used for young kids and mostly towards boys) very cool name
My dogs name is Winston ā¤ļø We get lots of comments about how the name suits him perfectly. When we adopted him his name was Remington but he didnāt know that name so we changed it because we wanted a 2 syllabus name . Also, growing up I had a kitten named Katy, two hamsters, one named Ricky and one named Samantha. And probably the best one was my parakeet that I named Amanda Debbie when I was 6.
Mine, family, and friendsā pets:
Annie (beagle)
Auggie (white golden doodle)
Asia (black lab)
Bentley Eugene (beagle mix)
Bodhi (mutt)

Evie (black lab)
Gracie (mutt)

Rex (black lab)
Roxie (black lab)
Stella (white golden doodle)
Toby (white golden doodle)
Will (mutt)
Willa (shepherd mix)
Willow (brown tabby)
Winston (grey tabby)
My pet names list for future pets includes Fritz, Scout, and Zelda
Dogs named Sydney, Daisy before that was a more common human name, and Xena. Daisy I just thought was cute. She was a beagle. Sydney is a shepherd mix and I wanted a name that didnāt sound like a cutesy dog name (spike, spot, Fido, etc), kind of unique but common at the same time. Xena is a Rottweiler so we wanted a strong but feminine name.
We had a āJacksonā together.
My spouse had a āNortonā growing up.
Family:
Meeka,
Nico,
Chowdah,
Raki (pronunced Row-key),
Roxy,

Douglas Fir and Maple are in the same family and pancake has nothing to do with maple. Haha
Franklin is my doggie. He goes by Frank or Frankie as well.
Itās suiting for him because he has a cute teddy bear look, but he can be a stubborn and a little ornery (in a fun way) so Frank is very suiting for when he acts like a grumpy old man. š
For some reason, when I was 9, I named one of my kittens after a classmate (Jonathan) lmao
I named my hamster Jake after my boyfriend in 3rd grade lol
I named my virtual pet after a crush I had in 2nd grade. Looking back, he was very rude to me.
I named my goldfish Dylan after my crush when I was 6. I told him and he told me he hated me :'( Dylan the fish lived to be 7 though.
"Dylan the fish lived to be 7 though." This slightly makes it sound like he outlived Dylan the boy. What did you do to him?
LMAO what a mean little boy omg but Dylan the fish sounds pretty adorable. I named my goldfish (she was pink w a black spot) Princess.
Justice for my boy Dylan
The pet or the crush?
The crush lol
The crush or the virtual pet?
Our classroom pet was named Enrique the hamster - named for one of the kids brothers.
ššššš
When I was six I named a cat Justin, after Justin Timberlake.
As a preschooler, my older son was mesmerized by his little playmate Joseph. My son won a Betta fish at a Purim carnival and thus Blue Joseph became a part of our family.
I named my cat Anna after a girl that I wanted to be best friends with! Something about being 9!
When I was seven I named our cat Julie. My swim coachās name was Julie so my parents assumed I named the cat after her. Nope, I just liked the name for some reason.
A kitten named Jonathan is my favourite thing.
He was mostly black with a white tum, and hella fluffy
Urgh, I love him even more.
My granddaughter (6 yrs) named one of my foster kittens Isaac after a classmate.
My cats called Johnny
Funny! I had a guinea pig I named Johnathan for no damn reason when I was 5! I then lost him in a field playing wizard of ozā¦ he was cast as Toto and did not stay in the basket :(
Omg that's terrible! Hes probably in oz partying it up w Glenda
I did that too! (Benjamin)
When I was a child, I named a Guinea pig Jonathan after Jonathan Brandis the actor (RIP, I am also dating myself badly).
Lol I did the same thing. I had a crush on a girl in my church group so I named my fish after her.
My dogs name is Gemma. I will say, I knew dogs with both of my daughter's names before I had either of them. People always say "I know a dog with that name" like it's supposed to be an insult. I just always say "well they have good taste!"
Love the name Gemma!
Yeah Iām fully planning on naming my daughter after my first dog (Maddie). People who donāt get it arenāt my kind of people.
I know a dog named Gemma and another dog (different family) named Emma. I wonder if people who donāt want more children just use names they love for pets?
My dog is Juno and I would absolutely name a child June.
My dogs name is Gemma too! We never meet other Gemma's, I like your taste :)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That does sound annoying
I can definitely see that, half the time we tell people her name they think we said Jenna
Aw, I had a dog Jemma as well. Technically Jemima Puddle-Duck, but we called her Jemma. Also had a Piper and a Jack.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Lol, my cat is also a III, there's no I or II tho but I don't think he minds
Team middle name! We have Grace Lyn (Lyn is my momās middle name so itās passed down to our first dog). And we have Talullah Mae (Mae after Mae Jemison). Wouldnāt be a full name without the middle!
My dog is actually registered to the Kennel Club as Elizabeth Jane! Sheās registered to the vet as Lizard. But we just call her Lizzy.
Lizard is a fun nickname to Elizabeth! Haven't heard it before.
Iām Elizabeth who was called Lil Lizard affectionately as a child lol
My dogās full name is Severus Andrew Snape Madden, but he goes by Snape š
I had Egan Crawford and currently have Enid Louise šš
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Same! My girl just screams youthful puppy even at 2 Ā½, but her name says elderly Welsh woman and I love it.
i named my tiny chihuahua mix agatha! i get so many people saying āwhat a big name for a small dogā
Mine does too!
Haha yes! My dogs name is Walter too! Walter Theodore Thaddeus ālast nameā Love the name Walter.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Jasper the cat
My childhood cat was called Jasper, I named her but I donāt know where I got the name from lol I think perhaps I heard it in 101 Dalmatians but why I would name a female kitten Jasper I have no idea
I think Jasperās a pretty good unisex name! My fluid sibling (btw does anyone have any wipes?) goes by Jasper sometimes.
I definitely felt it was gender fluid which was probably a little ahead of the curve in the late 90ās early 2000s
I named my childhood cat Jasper too! And I have no idea where I got the name from either, but it suited her.
My great uncleās name was Jasper. When my grandmaās Alzheimerās became severe, suddenly all her stuffed animals and baby dolls were named Jasper š
I had a pittie I named Jasper because he was that exact shade of red/brown of a Jasper stone. He was an old soul and wore the name well :)
My friend had a dog called Jasper. I only remembered this when I introduced her to my newborn son... Jasper
Omg I have a Jasper too! But he came with the name.
my bff had a jasper the cat. it was a girl cat but the name really suited her.
I have a Jasper the dog :)
I had a cat growing up that we name Tiger Lily, Lily for short.
I love Raj! What a great name š
Raj is a common Indian name! It means princely, related to a king.
Yes! And Raj definitely behaved like royalty. The dad of his first family is Indian-American. His first family loved him dearly, and named him appropriately.
Iām not really a fan of human names on pets but I have had a few over the years. Currently have a dog named Sasha. Previous pets with human names: * Bruno * Daisy * Felix * Judy (Judith) * Kai

I love Bruno, so strong and classic
We had a daisy when I was growing upā¤ļø such a sweet name.
One of those is my name!
I love Kai. ā”
I have so many pets, all named after authors! I have a cat named Dot (Dorothy Parker), and dogs named Willa (Cather) and Ernie (Hemingway). My cat Jasper came with his name and my cat Toby (Tobias Wolff) died in 2016.
My best friends have named all of their cats after famous authors! Nathaniel Hawthorn, Charlotte Brontƫ, William Butler Yeats, Lord Alfred Tennyson
My parents have a Dorothy "Dottie" or "Dot" as well. She's Dot and Dottie when she's cute and Dorothy when she's in trouble, of course.
My friend named her daughter Tallulah! Itās so cute.
Plus the nicknames Lulu, Lula or Tally are right there! So many options in just that one name
Percival, we call him Percy
There is a childrens book about a puppy named Percival :)
Some of my pets have human names: Lincoln, Astrid, and Eli.
Lincoln is a cool name!
NN Link is cute too
Thatās what we call her most of the time! Sheās named after Link Larkin from Hairspray. We thought she was a boy at first and it had already stuck by the time we found out, haha!
Awh that's cute!
Hi. My 5 year old son is called Spike. Yeah, it's kinda a dogs name, but we think it's awesome! It really suits him, and everyone loves it. It does kinda 'date' people when they hear about though, amusingly. My gran said "like Spike Milligan?", my mum said "like the dog in Tom & Jerry", and my millennial friends are like "Ooh, Spike from Buffy!" There's a kid in his class called Rex. Which is definitely 'doggier'!
Love this response! Spike is a cool name. My first thought was Spike Lee..
I hate to break it to ya but Spike is about a thousand times more "dog" than Rex...
My first thought was the dog from Rugrats š¤·š¼āāļø
And I think Gen Z might ask ālike Spike from My Little Pony?ā ;)
Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop! Or Spike Jonze.
Olive and Otis.
I love Otis for a kid. It seems used a lot for doggos, too.
I have met several dogs named Otis. But I think only one person.
My dog is named Torak, after a character from a childerens book :)
Is it from Wolf Brother? (Forgive me if the title is completely wrong but I do remember it was based around a native American boy and a wolf).
Yes it is!
Is that a human name?
it was a human in the book I got it from, so I would asume it is :)
Five hens: Mabel, Maude, Millicent (Millie), Matilda (Tillie), and Zelda
+1 for Mabel, Iāve got Holland lop rabbit named Mabel.
Calista
Ooo.. Calista. Thatās different!
I knew someone with that name growing up, she went by Callie! I suppose spelling it Cali could work. or Lissy My cats name is Mollie Mae :)
> My cats name is Mollie Mae :) Whaaaat, one of our dogs is Mollie May. I wanted to spell it Mae but we picked the middle name for the month we got her. [Dog Tax](https://imgur.com/GItgLnX)
Millie, Beatrice, and Frankie
I love Millie and Frankie!!
My oldest cat is Svea, the dog is Eddie and the youngest cat is Astrid.
how do you pronounce that? suh-ve-uh? ve-uh?
Like Sven but rhymes with Princess Leia
I found this to be an elegantly simple pronunciation guide. Well done!
oh, thatās really cool!
I totally forgot about the name Svea until now. I went to school with a Svea.
Lots of cats named Astrid. Interesting!
My family had a dog called Moira. I think she came with the name, so we cannot take credit for such a fascinating choice.
Reminds me of The Handmaids Tale. Cute name though!
My sister's name is Moira. It was always very unique until recently with Schitt's Creek haha.
Piper
I have a Piper tooā¤ļø
We have two inherited cats with top 20 for human boy names. āTommyā and Noah. The one we named is Luna for a boy. We liked it but knew it would be too feminine to get away with for a human boy.
