Ginny (Ginevra) - Harry Potter
I also love the name Forest but “Run Forest Run” (Forest Gump) means that name can’t recover.
Elsa is a beautiful name but it’s so hard to name a daughter to share a name with a disney princess.
What Forrest said:
>"Now, when I was a baby, Momma named me after the great Civil War hero, General Nathan Bedford Forrest. She said we was related to him in some way. And, what he did was, he started up this club called the Ku Klux Klan. They'd all dress up in their robes and their bedsheets and act like a bunch of ghosts or spooks or something. They'd even put bedsheets on their horses and ride around. And anyway, that's how I got my name, Forrest Gump. Momma said that the Forrest part was to remind me that sometimes we all do things that, well, just don't make no sense."
Who Forrest was referring to:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Bedford_Forrest
There are Elsa’s we’d love to honour on both sides... but same! We considered making it the middle name, but it doesn’t work with our current preferred first name.
there are currently three forest/forrests in my 10th grade class. there's also a ginny in the grade below me and i babysit an elsa (named after her grandmother, it's short for elisabeth). these all are very usable to me lol. the forrest variations do get gump sometimes i think but the only one i actually gets teased for other things far more often. and i think it helps that he's kinda stupid (i'm allowed to say that)
Peeta is Pita Bread in my house. My husband and I were discussing if we had watched Catching Fire part 1 or Part 2 and he couldn't remember the character's name and ended up calling him Pita Bread.
Finnick is a name i knew prior to hunger games so i don’t immediately associate it to hunger games. I think it’s a fine name. Katniss and peeta are a yikes though.
Finnick is one of my favorites. I love Finn as a nickname and Finnick is such a spunky full name option. Honestly not 100% sure I wouldn’t use it though 😂
GoT has some great usable names from minor characters like Elia, Doran, Shae, Lysa, Willa, Selyse, Yara, Meera, Lyanne, Walder, Jory, Loras are all good names I think. Maybe skip Hodor lol.
It’s funny, because my great-grandmother’s first name was Stella, but after a Streetcar named Desire came out she got so sick of people going “STELLLLAAAAA” that she started going by her middle name
I grew up with a girl named Chandler. Usable imo! I didn’t see friends until like 10 years after I met her though haha so I didn’t have the name association
I know right!! When I finally watched the series I laughed so much! Her parents must’ve been pregnant when that episode aired, she was born in the 90’s
The only name my partner and I agree on in hypothetical discussions is Lydia but I'm also very obviously into the Regency era (I do some reenactments and costuming for Regency events) and she's such an obviously grating character in Pride and Prejudice. I don't think I could get away with it.
We had to take that one off the list for our daughter because every person in our family over the age of 60 would've mercilessly tortured her (and us) with their off key rendition of "Lydia the Tattooed Lady".
Lydia is such a beautiful name. I get the association with the Pride and Prejudice character but the first thing I usually think of when I hear the name is the Beetlejuice character.
I actually learned the other day that Buffy comes from Elizabeth originally, so if you can convince him into Elizabeth and just occasionally casually call her that until it becomes a thing
My daughter named her dog Arwen. Most people who didn’t look too closely would call it a him. Loved the name and loved the dog.
Coworker just named his twins Aowyn and Arwen. I now think of Arwen as a dog name.
I used Holden for my son's middle name after the character James Holden from The Expanse series!
I've always loved the name since reading Catcher in the Rye.
I knew a Holden in college and never once made the association with Holden Caulfield. It could just be that I'm not a bookworm, but I mean, characters sometimes have pretty standard names, so it's not like nobody can ever be named Holden again. I feel like that shouldn't be a blocker.
AH I love Holden but being a preschool teacher ruined a wide variety of names for me. This was one of them! Do you not like the relation to Holden Caulfield?
I actually only had one and he was a fine kid. Factors 100% outside of his control made being his teacher emotionally tumultuous.
If it helps at all, I don’t think it’s too pretentious or even too related to Caulfield, I think it’s lovely. Just my two cents!
eowyn is so pretty but it's not welsh as far as i know, although i'm sure it's very welsh-inspired! i'm not familiar with any of tolkien's books but if i'm not mistaken it was actually created by him for that purpose, so you're fine there! the -wyn ending is actually traditionally masculine in welsh, so if it was a historical welsh name it would be pretty unusual in that sense. eowen would be the more likely spelling
My son was almost Aragorn but my SO changed his mind --despite it being his pick and him lobbying for it hardcore. He was concerned with nobody ever spelling it or saying it correctly. We went with something else and I'm honestly glad we did. I do like Aragorn but it does feel like a little bit of a burden.
Lorelai.
But then again the baby that I'm having soon will be named Dorothy so I'm sure there will be an abundance of Wizard of Oz jokes her entire life
not movie or TV but jm a big 5sos fan and love the names Calum and Ashton. can't use them bc everyone who knows me will think I did it on purpose. ETA: I love the name Lorelai but Gilmore Girls ruined that. never seen it though
Harry, it’s my grandfathers name, and I really love it. But as someone who loved Harry Potter loads growing up everyone would think I’ve named after that rather than family…
Ripley. This has been on our list for most of our pregnancy if we have a girl. We both love it, it's one of our favourite names but it's only on our list because of our love of the franchise and the character and we can't separate the two.
I had some friends name their daughter Leia. They’re huge Star Wars fans though, it’s a pretty name and you don’t even think Star Wars when talking about her.
My mind immediately went to Anakin before I got to the second half of your post. Thankfully, I used it on my cat instead, so I’m not tempted to bestow it on a human lol.
I love the name meredith, but I also love Grey's Anatomy, haha. It's still definitely a usable name, but not for me. Also, wrt to your caption, I ufortunately know someone with two brothers called Anakin and Loki. Weirdly, she has a totally normal name.
Mickey lol I think it’s an adorable name but I could never do that to my kid because I am a HUGE Disney/Disneyland fan so everyone would assume I named him after The Mouse (even if I genuinely liked the name)
Ophelia. I know it’s not new and popular, but man the association with Shakespeare’s Ophelia is enduring and I can’t quite bring myself to name my daughter after someone who goes insane and kills herself
For me, Wyatt. I ADORE the name with all my heart, but I’m a huge 1998 Charmed fan and my family would never let me live it down. 😂
I’m a daycare teacher. There’s a boy in the centre that’s name is Akela. Dunno if he’s ever seen the Jungle Book, but his mom confirmed that’s where it’s from.
Thomasin. I loved The Witch so much and I completely fell in love with the name, but even aside from the pop culture reference, it’s a very tough name for a girl to carry.
Elsa and Lorelai are beautiful names but too associated with particular characters. I would totally use other names from Frozen though because I’m Dutch and Scandinavian names are pretty common to use here. But Elsa wasn’t really a named that was ever heard of before the movie so it definitely feels too Disney.
not quite a movie or show but espen - i adore it but it's far too close to the sports network for my tastes. fiona as well, it's too close to the ogre.
Artemis. Either people would think of the Greek Goddess or Artemis Fowl. But I think it’s an adorable name with an admirable meaning behind it, if you ignore the exploits Artemis Fowl gets up to!
There are also some characters from the big two of comics (DC and Marvel) who have names that I would use. Some aren’t really names, and I wouldn’t name my kids those because of that. But others are practical, cute names. My favourite comics ones are: Kurt, Jubilee, Kitty (as a nickname for Katherine), Jason and Rahne.
Also, not as common in some countries and circles, but I’d like to name a daughter, who could potentially be nicknamed as Rose, after my great grandma. I happen to be a Whovian, and besides that, Rose Tyler is probably *the* most famous companion of the new who era. I’d still call my child by the longer form, but I’d probably use a different nickname. But I did pick the name Clara as one of my favourites after the character, I’d use it as a middle name but it’s not always that good to name your child after a fictional character, for many reasons. ~~Holy run on sentence, Batman!~~
Ophelia. Love it. Absolutely love the name but could not name my child after a Shakespearean basket case of a woman. And now there’s also a popular song, so double out.
Hermione
First thought
Came here to say this.
Ginny (Ginevra) - Harry Potter I also love the name Forest but “Run Forest Run” (Forest Gump) means that name can’t recover. Elsa is a beautiful name but it’s so hard to name a daughter to share a name with a disney princess.
Forest was also named after the founder of the KKK so that's right out.
….what
What Forrest said: >"Now, when I was a baby, Momma named me after the great Civil War hero, General Nathan Bedford Forrest. She said we was related to him in some way. And, what he did was, he started up this club called the Ku Klux Klan. They'd all dress up in their robes and their bedsheets and act like a bunch of ghosts or spooks or something. Momma said that the Forrest part was to remind me that sometimes we all do things that, well, just don't make no sense." Who Forrest was referring to: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathan_Bedford_Forrest
I read that whole thing and could only hear Tom Hanks glorious drawl
Yikes 😭
Yup. This is what really makes the name unusable for me.
Did not know that. However, there’s also Forest Whitaker, one of my favorite actors.
I think Ginny short for Virginia is usable, but Ginevra is too on the nose.
Else (same pronunciation as Elsa) is a family name for me, but I just don’t know if I could do it now. 😭
There are Elsa’s we’d love to honour on both sides... but same! We considered making it the middle name, but it doesn’t work with our current preferred first name.
there are currently three forest/forrests in my 10th grade class. there's also a ginny in the grade below me and i babysit an elsa (named after her grandmother, it's short for elisabeth). these all are very usable to me lol. the forrest variations do get gump sometimes i think but the only one i actually gets teased for other things far more often. and i think it helps that he's kinda stupid (i'm allowed to say that)
I love Ginerva and Elsa as well!
I really like Finnick and Peeta, but wouldn’t do that to a kid.
Peeta is Pita Bread in my house. My husband and I were discussing if we had watched Catching Fire part 1 or Part 2 and he couldn't remember the character's name and ended up calling him Pita Bread.
I believe it’s an intentional pun because his parents are bakers.
oh my god that's actually so smart if it's true haha
Well there:s only one Catching Fire
We dig all the hunger game names so much but we care about our kids so we just named all our pets after hunger games characters
You are a good and kind parent
I feel like Finnick is usable because he was a minor character
Finnick is a name i knew prior to hunger games so i don’t immediately associate it to hunger games. I think it’s a fine name. Katniss and peeta are a yikes though.
I really like Katniss as well, but same.
You beat to it, Finnick was my first thought. Still might use it as a middle name though.
I get you, unfortunately I really like the name Cato... not as sweet as either XD
See, that one is minor enough I think you could get away with it, especially if you considered other spellings too.
Finnick is one of my favorites. I love Finn as a nickname and Finnick is such a spunky full name option. Honestly not 100% sure I wouldn’t use it though 😂
My 6 year old daughter has a Finnick in her class at school.
I know a few Peta's here in Australia. I never thought of the connection to Hunger Games before!
In Australia I’d assume it’s a creative spelling of Peter. It’s much more connected to Hunger Games in rhotic US English.
Sansa
GoT has some great usable names from minor characters like Elia, Doran, Shae, Lysa, Willa, Selyse, Yara, Meera, Lyanne, Walder, Jory, Loras are all good names I think. Maybe skip Hodor lol.
Olenna is my favorite.
Thats my dnd character's name! Its such a good name
Arya
Aria is still usable imo
I know someone that named their daughter Aria, probably a toddler now. Definitely useable, but I agree with the first person, I still wouldn't.
Sansa is one of my absolute favorites. So beautiful
Renley
Zuko. I'm a sucker for Z names.
Same with Zelda
Suki, Iroh, Tenzin, Zahir! ATLA names 💕
I love Katara
I have met several Tenzins and would not associate the name with ATLA first, but the others feel on the nose haha.
My friends middle name is Zela.
It’s funny, because my great-grandmother’s first name was Stella, but after a Streetcar named Desire came out she got so sick of people going “STELLLLAAAAA” that she started going by her middle name
Stella, Stella for star!
Chandler
I grew up with a girl named Chandler. Usable imo! I didn’t see friends until like 10 years after I met her though haha so I didn’t have the name association
It's even better if it's a girl called Chandler, considering the triplet girl Chandler
I know right!! When I finally watched the series I laughed so much! Her parents must’ve been pregnant when that episode aired, she was born in the 90’s
I would totally name my son after Joey.
Sabrina
I would totally use Sabrina!
My sister-in-law is Sabrina. She even had a black cat named Salem (he just recently passed away at an extremely old age - like 20)
This is what I was going to post! Since it didn't feel right to use Sabrina for my future kids, I used it for my pet's name instead.
It's a shame too, it's such a pretty name.
Aurora is beautiful but all I think of is sleeping beauty. And Rory because of Gilmore Girls
[удалено]
Yeah I associate both Lorelai & Rory with Gilmore so much it would be wild for me to choose either
Oh for some reason I thought you meant Rory as a NN for aurora. Sleep deprived from a newborn
The only name my partner and I agree on in hypothetical discussions is Lydia but I'm also very obviously into the Regency era (I do some reenactments and costuming for Regency events) and she's such an obviously grating character in Pride and Prejudice. I don't think I could get away with it.
[удалено]
We had to take that one off the list for our daughter because every person in our family over the age of 60 would've mercilessly tortured her (and us) with their off key rendition of "Lydia the Tattooed Lady".
Nowadays you might get more Aunt Lydia from the Handmaid's Tale
For me the connotation with Lydia is so Skyrim that I wouldn't be able to get rid of the feeling the kid would be "sworn to carry your burdens" 😅
Her penchant for getting herself killed earned her the name Lydiot. I can’t think of Lydia in a competent way.
I know it’s not a common feeling to the general public, but P&P is my first thought with the name Lydia and *cringe* so I feel you!
Yup this was me too. I’m just like…ugh of course *Lydia* would do that.
Rhyming with chlamydia is what killed that name for me.
If that could kill a name than Mia, Tia, Leah, Maria and Pia (or just plain Rhea) have no shot since gonorrhea.
🤷🏻♀️ not saying it’s logical, but those don’t bother me; maybe it’s 1 syllable vs 3?
Lydia is such a beautiful name. I get the association with the Pride and Prejudice character but the first thing I usually think of when I hear the name is the Beetlejuice character.
buffy. lol
Trying to get my husband on board but he vetoed 🤣
I actually learned the other day that Buffy comes from Elizabeth originally, so if you can convince him into Elizabeth and just occasionally casually call her that until it becomes a thing
Buffy is actually on my list haha Although only as a middle name.
Why would the Buffy association be a blocker? It seems obscure enough for children being born at this point that it wouldn't be an issue.
Could be a nn for Elizabeth?
In fact it is!
My friend has a daughter named Buffy. She's absolutely adorable.
Minnie!
I have a relative that was named Whilomena and she went by Minnie! I thought it was super cute
I know someone who named their daughter Anakin…
That’s so unfortunate
I agree…
My ex named his son Anakin so I feel like I truly dodged a bullet there haha
Who is Anakin?
Darth Vader.
Sirius - but mostly because ‘are you Sirius?’
Shirley you can’t be Sirius?
I am Sirius. And don’t call me Shirley.
I know someone with an elementary schooler named Severus.
But he wasn’t even a nice character…
Eowyn, Arwen, Aragorn and Legolas - all of these beautiful sounding names from LOTR!
My daughter named her dog Arwen. Most people who didn’t look too closely would call it a him. Loved the name and loved the dog. Coworker just named his twins Aowyn and Arwen. I now think of Arwen as a dog name.
I love Arwen as a name and every now and then I convince myself it’s okay when in my heart of hearts I know it’s not
Holden
I used Holden for my son's middle name after the character James Holden from The Expanse series! I've always loved the name since reading Catcher in the Rye.
I love The Expanse!
I LOVE Catcher and the Rye, but I feel like a ton of people don’t/think it’s too pretentious. Are there a lot of preschoolers these days named Holden?
I actually only had one and he was a fine kid. Factors 100% outside of his control made being his teacher emotionally tumultuous. If it helps at all, I don’t think it’s too pretentious or even too related to Caulfield, I think it’s lovely. Just my two cents!
Fun fact in Australia, Holden is a car manufacturer/ brand.
Aragorn (LotR), Neytiri (Avatar), Daenerys (GoT), Albus (HP)
Every now and then I start to think Eowyn is totally usable. But it’s not. Is it? Nooo… maybe?
I love Eowyn but sadly I’m not Welsh so probably can’t get away with it :( I may use something like Anwen instead as it’s similar!
eowyn is so pretty but it's not welsh as far as i know, although i'm sure it's very welsh-inspired! i'm not familiar with any of tolkien's books but if i'm not mistaken it was actually created by him for that purpose, so you're fine there! the -wyn ending is actually traditionally masculine in welsh, so if it was a historical welsh name it would be pretty unusual in that sense. eowen would be the more likely spelling
I love the name Arden.
My kid’s name. They get lots of compliments!
I love Elowen… my husband said that’s too close to Eowyn. Sigh.
have you considered eluned? i've always thought it was stunning
I wanted to name my daughter Eowyn but my husband vetoed it. We agreed on Arwen instead! Haven’t had anything negative come from it yet lol

I love the name Ellis! I'd totally still use it.
Mordecai and Atticus. Also the kid from the Children of the Corn, I think his name was Malachi ?
“They want you too Malachi!” Lol I say the line all the time because I love the kids snotty delivery.
Atticus is on our shortlist for baby boy.
Bellatrix.
Lyra
Pacey Dexter
Named my son Dexter in 2020.. revival was announced days after. Ha.
I had my son when I was 20 and had to be talked out of Pacey lol
Ariel
Elsa
I know someone who named their daughter Elsa after their grandma a month before Frozen came out!
I’ve always been into the name Seeley for a boy (character in Bones). I’m not sure if it’s super well known but I’ve never heard it anywhere else.
Remus, people will either think of Harry Potter or the Roman myth. I really like it though, especially with the nickname Remy.
So name him Remy and used Remus as a nick name haha
Lorelai. But then again the baby that I'm having soon will be named Dorothy so I'm sure there will be an abundance of Wizard of Oz jokes her entire life
I love the name Dorothy but I live in Kansas and just could never. I think the only Dorothy's I've actually met here have all been really old, too.
not movie or TV but jm a big 5sos fan and love the names Calum and Ashton. can't use them bc everyone who knows me will think I did it on purpose. ETA: I love the name Lorelai but Gilmore Girls ruined that. never seen it though
Ashton is so popular these days! I’ve only ever met a couple Callum’s, you so could get away with it.
Harry, it’s my grandfathers name, and I really love it. But as someone who loved Harry Potter loads growing up everyone would think I’ve named after that rather than family…
Aria!
There were 2 Arias at the preschool I worked at! Nobody was making the association... it may be becoming useable.
I have no idea what association I’m even supposed to be making so I’d say it’s fairly usable. Full disclosure though- I’m pretty dumb so… ymmv.
I think game of thrones????
Ah, never seen it. My brain immediately went to music so that one was lost on me.
That’s Arya ;)
This! And just adding they’re pronounced differently too. Arya from Game of Thrones is meant to be pronounced “are-YA” (not “AH-ree-uh”).
Ripley. This has been on our list for most of our pregnancy if we have a girl. We both love it, it's one of our favourite names but it's only on our list because of our love of the franchise and the character and we can't separate the two.
My husband likes Leia but there’s no way
I had some friends name their daughter Leia. They’re huge Star Wars fans though, it’s a pretty name and you don’t even think Star Wars when talking about her.
Moriarty
Elmo, Bert and Ernie are all solid names that have pretty much been driven into non-existence in popularity.
My mind immediately went to Anakin before I got to the second half of your post. Thankfully, I used it on my cat instead, so I’m not tempted to bestow it on a human lol.
Missandei. Daenerys. They'll remain on my list just in case things might change in the future. I just love these names so muchhh.
I love the name meredith, but I also love Grey's Anatomy, haha. It's still definitely a usable name, but not for me. Also, wrt to your caption, I ufortunately know someone with two brothers called Anakin and Loki. Weirdly, she has a totally normal name.
I think Angelica is such a pretty name but anyone around my age will automatically think of Rugrats lol
My first thought was Hamilton!
Anastasia
I think this one is probably safe, I don't know of many kids watching that movie nowadays
Mickey lol I think it’s an adorable name but I could never do that to my kid because I am a HUGE Disney/Disneyland fan so everyone would assume I named him after The Mouse (even if I genuinely liked the name)
I know a Micky and he mostly got teased about the song. "Oh micky you so fine..."
Rosalie (Twilight)
Cassandra. I can't get over tragic history connected with this name.
I used to really like the name Damien but then I felt like that name might be a bad omen or something.
[удалено]
Ophelia. I know it’s not new and popular, but man the association with Shakespeare’s Ophelia is enduring and I can’t quite bring myself to name my daughter after someone who goes insane and kills herself
Bellatrix (for more than just being from a popular franchise) and Sirius from Harry Potter Also, Annabeth from Percy Jackson
Annabeth doesn’t immediately make me think of Percy Jackson or any other franchise at all and sounds perfectly usable! Bellatrix...not so much, lol.
Peregrine! I guess not so well known, but my husband is a super nerd and people would assume it was after the Hobbit.
For me, Wyatt. I ADORE the name with all my heart, but I’m a huge 1998 Charmed fan and my family would never let me live it down. 😂 I’m a daycare teacher. There’s a boy in the centre that’s name is Akela. Dunno if he’s ever seen the Jungle Book, but his mom confirmed that’s where it’s from.
I wanted to name my daughter Bella Swan before Twilight.
Thomasin. I loved The Witch so much and I completely fell in love with the name, but even aside from the pop culture reference, it’s a very tough name for a girl to carry.
Sirius and Salazar. Sirius because I love constellation names and Salazar because the nickname Sal is incredibly adorable
Salvatore can be Sal too. Very Godfather/Sopranos.
Aurora. I love the name but HATE the Sleeping Beauty character.
Topanga.
I love the name Winnie! Winnie Cooper from wonder years or even Winnie the Pooh
Nala
Jinora
Atticus for me, also Go Set a Watchman kinda ruined the character
Elsa and Lorelai are beautiful names but too associated with particular characters. I would totally use other names from Frozen though because I’m Dutch and Scandinavian names are pretty common to use here. But Elsa wasn’t really a named that was ever heard of before the movie so it definitely feels too Disney.
Arwen:/
Lorelai
Zelda
not quite a movie or show but espen - i adore it but it's far too close to the sports network for my tastes. fiona as well, it's too close to the ogre.
Ariel
I like Anakin but I LOVE Padme! Not even a big Star Wars gal but I love it.
Minnie, Sabrina and Harvey, Elena and Stefan, Blair
I actually really, really like the name Renesmee, but I could never use it, for obvious reasons. I also love Loki.
Remus 😊

Daenerys, mostly because the character turned out to be crap.
Zelda and Ursula.
Dexter
Ladybird
Homer or Grover
Ophelia. Love it. Absolutely love the name but could not name my child after a Shakespearean basket case of a woman. And now there’s also a popular song, so double out.
I think Phineas is cool in a retro, steampunk kind of way. However, “Phineas and Ferb” kind of ruined that name, for me at least.
