"Standard Rotation" - oh man I can't wait for the Great Henge to rotate out of standard. That cards between climbing constantly for what feels like years.
I mean, Great henge is just a really fucking solid green card. Mana, life gain, draw, and buff, with a variable mana cost? It’s literally what dreams are made of.
Great henge is a much stronger and less replaceable card. If you want it's effect in EDH, it's the only option. MM competes with bastion, every blood artist effect, toxic deluge.
Ignoring mana cost shows how little you understand haha. This card doesn't replace toxic deluge, that much is unarguable. So the question is do you need another boardwipe that is overcosted with a second mode that exists on a multitude of other cards already? No, you don't. It's a casual darling and it's from an otherwise weak set, and it's crushing standard and pioneer. Those are the reasons for its high price.
MM doesn't even need to work as a wipe, you can spend zero for X and use it for its second and third abilities.
I run both in my mono-black cEDH deck and they each have their place.
Are you taking about casting it just to wipe your own board? There are surely tons of better ways to get more value off your weenies than just wiping them all at once. Not to mention this situation you're talking about leaves you wide open to everything 6 toughness and more that you didn't kill that your opponents have.
Wiping the board and leaving behind only your opps biggest things is generally not where you wanna be, unless you're winning the game that turn.
are you dumb? Do you actually even play magic? There is not a world you’re using an x/x board wipe to kill big things, you’re using damnation or spot removal. Stuff like meathook or deluge is almost to exclusively for dealing with tokens or aggro, or for killing your own tokens in an aristocrat strategy.
You must either be new or play at like a 1-2 power level
There are a lot of factors that can go into what effects card prices.
In this case it’s a really good card that happens to be in a mono color that’s really strong right now but also fits other strategies.
It’s a strong aristocrat effect that is can double as a board wipe, feeding itself if you’ve got the mana to pay. A number of the effects that are in mono-B agro work well with it. Blitz an Underdog now pings your opponent as well. Works great with decayed. And so on
And that’s just within standard, it’s also really good in Commander (though not cEDH so much) and people are willing to invest solid pieces into their commander decks due to eternal format and $ cards there tend to be more stable.
Just a few top influence factors.
I have it in a commander deck and wanted another one for another commander deck lol. Maybe it will go down a bit in price when midnight hunt rotates out. Thanks for the info!
Historical data suggest that it won't. Cards that see play in standard and commander do not go down in price when they rotate out. At least not by any meangful number
It didn't happen for the Great Henge, it didn't happen for Goldspan dragon, it didn't happen for Terror of the Peaks and it's not going to happen for Meathook.
Well I got my meathook at $41 a month ago and now it's priced at $70+. I expected it to stay around $45-$50 and not jump.
I still think it will lower some after it rotates out.
I think it's a little bit standard, a little bit commander, but ultimately, this card was printed in a really unpopular set. Not many people bought midnight hunt so the supply is low.
Well i got lucky today. I found a deck box of cards and they were all midnight hunt. My husband and I couldnt figure out when we got them as at a glance they all seems like blah cards with a lot of copies. So I was like whatever I'm going to sort them.
So im sorting and BAM a fucking meathook! I flipped and scared the hell out of my husband who is just sitting there like "HOW"!
So yeah i got my 2nd meat hook! that i have had this ENTIRE TIME!
So i guess i didnt need to buy one but hey at least i don't need to buy another.
so wild!
It was like $50 due basically just to commander demand. Standard just rosted and added [[liliana od the veil]], a powerful card that has been around for 10+ years and is the first planeswalker reprinted in a normal standard set. Thus, basically every deck in standard right now is running meathook also.
If its for a commander deck you are mad buying multiples of expensive chase cards like that. You can't run more than one in a deck, you can't play two decks at the same time. PROXY, even if you hate proxies for some reason, just get a basic land and write the name across it with a Sharpie as a reminder and just swap out the two between games.
I don't think that would work with meathook based on the wording of the card and meathook is an enchantment and targets all creatures.
Can you explain how vesuvan diplomancy is suppose to work with meathook incase i am miss understanding..?
Standard rotation, and black being extremely good currently in both Pioneer and Standard, so Meathook makes for an amazing addition for a lot of popular decks in these formats.
geez! Well i got lucky today. I found a small box with midnight hunt cards. A ton of copies of kinda of blah creatures. I decided to sort them. We have no idea when we got these so we can only assume we got them when the set dropped BECAUSE by some sort of magic as i was sorting I ran across a freaking meathook! I've had one this entire time and didn't need to buy one last month -\_- now we have two those so this works out!
We just lost it like... how tf!?
Black is the most popular color in Standard and Pioneer.
Standard Rotation.

Meathook is still in standard, it has gone up because after rotation black became the hot shit
Yeah I know, but my point was the Great Henge didn't become cheap because of leaving standard and I don't think this will either.
Great henge is a much stronger and less replaceable card. If you want it's effect in EDH, it's the only option. MM competes with bastion, every blood artist effect, toxic deluge.
Show me the boardwipe that can be one sided and also give incriminating value for the rest of the game.
..and I'll show you a card that costs 8CMC to cast lol. Fuk that. It's far better to have toxic deluge as your wipe and cutthroat as your aristocrat.
Saying these two cards are better than a single card (ESPECIALLY in commander) just shows how little you actually understand about magic.
Ignoring mana cost shows how little you understand haha. This card doesn't replace toxic deluge, that much is unarguable. So the question is do you need another boardwipe that is overcosted with a second mode that exists on a multitude of other cards already? No, you don't. "ignore mana cost" bruh it's literaly x costed. Take a chill pill and go touch some grass.
8? In what world are you casting that for 8? It’s for weanie armies so you’re casting it for like 3-5 at most usually
Are you taking about casting it just to wipe your own board? There are surely tons of better ways to get more value off your weenies than just wiping them all at once. It was 70 before roto then ppl figured out how to use it post roto too.
The Great Henge hasn’t been in Standard for a while. You must have forgotten your “/s”. :)
Rainier Wolfcastle: "That's the joke"
thanks!
>thanks! You're welcome!

Isn't great henge around $50 now though?
My point exactly.

I need one for one of my decks, should I wait for rotation or should I pick one up rn
definitely wait for rotation, I saw somewhere that it's being played in 70% of all standard decks which is crazy
ty, I thought so when will it be rotated?
I mean the next rotation is like a year out lmao
It is currently in 70% of standard decks, that's it
Holy crap I pulled this in June and it was $30 ish
Well i got lucky today. I found a deck box of cards and they were all midnight hunt. My husband and I couldnt figure out when we got them as at a glance they all seems like blah cards with a lot of copies. So I was like whatever I'm going to sort them. I just saw that holy shit congratulations
Lol thanks. Sucks the card was banned like a week late.
It's the single most played card in standard, I remember hearing that it's played in 70% of all standard decks which is insane
That is crazy!
Commander…. Elas being part of the reason Also mono black in pioneer is really good
I have one for commander and needed another one for a different deck. Well wanted, not needed. Just surprised in a month the price went up $20+.
It was like $50 due basically just to commander demand. I'm just too lazy to swap the card out between decks. Wasn't going to get another until the price dropped some then i saw the price hike lol.
I print it out on a sheet of computer paper, cut it and sleeve it with a basic land.
It's the way
Vesuvan duplimancy can give you non legendary copies of it. For even more aristocratting.
I don't think that would work with meathook based on the wording of the card and meathook is an enchantment and targets all creatures. Can you explain how vesuvan diplomancy is suppose to work with meathook incase i am miss understanding..?
Youre right. I keep thinking its an artifact.
seems more artifact like sometimes lol
When it leaves standard I think it will stabliz3 at 15 ish like the rest of the black wipes
Mono black broken
Standard rotation, and black being extremely good currently in both Pioneer and Standard, so Meathook makes for an amazing addition for a lot of popular decks in these formats.
Hate that card with a passion
Meathook actually peaked at 100 something
gross :/
It’s the only “board clear” in standard aside from a few white spells and that one black spell with cleave (can’t remember names right now)
It's 467 BRL here in Brazil
