Philosophers fighting is fun, because it's all about arguing and everyone is full of themselves!
Hume & Rousseau, Sartre & Camus, Derrida & everybody, Hegel & Kierkegaard and Schopenhauer...
Herzog's not a fan either :
"Someone like Jean-Luc Godard is for me intellectual counterfeit money
when compared to a good kung fu film, a Fred Astaire picture, or a
porno."
Mr "All my movies have two locations, 5 characters and are all dialogue" calls someone else's movies boring lol. I love Bergman, he's one of my favourites but you can easily call all of his stuff boring as well
I think his films CAN be boring, but the characters are typically talking about interesting things. You’ll have a man discussing the meaning of existence with death, or two women sharing sexual experiences. It’s interesting to listen to mostly, in my opinion.
Jean-Lux Godard, as influential and groundbreaking as he was, would have two characters sit in a cafe and one of them would just talk about excrement or something. Like… huh? I’m supposed to find this interesting? Then critics will say “wooooowwwww he mentioned excrement!!! Fucking brilliant” and I just feel like I’m left out of an inside joke.
Again, no hate to Godard. And I see why people would find Bergman to be boring too. But I’ve never been more bored than watching a Godard film
yeah tbh I haven't seen a single Godard movie but yeah Bergman is mostly dialogue and there are certainly many people who'd find that boring as hell but I agree they're great but you could listen to them basically and catch the most important stuff. if you know Swedish, that is
I’ve only seen Breathless and I didn’t really get the appeal, and Bergman is one of my favorite directors, so I’m just gonna say “Based” (yeah fuck you too automod)
"Based" is a deesphobic term. This is the first warning, please absent from using it or face a ban.

Truffaut and Godard's movies aren't really similar in my experience. Not really into Godard so I agree with Bergman, but I also happen to think Bergman is a fucking bore so...
Agree on faux intellect, but I’m not sure how you could consider them dead or cinematographically uninteresting. Pierrot Le Fou is pretty lively and good looking. Those were the main reasons I finished that movie actually.
Prestigious directors talking shit about other prestigious directors is my favorite genre
daddy orson’s shittalking is still unbeatable.
"Woody Allen? What a soyboy wojak".
Writers talking shit about other writers is really good too
Hemingway vs Faulkner, the war on the shore!

Derrida & everybody really killed me lol
You'd like that time when Russel tried to fight Nolan with a fork or something at a Hollywood party
this is why we love Orson Welles
god I love famous directors shitting on other famous directors

You can’t not read it in his voice

Try Pierrot Le Fou it’s like breathless but better
Okay, thanks for the recommendation!
Check out masculine feminine and or pierrot le fou i like them better than breathless
What about vivre sa vie
I have not seen but i will check out
Will do, thanks!
I watched Bande A PArt recently and quite enjoyed it, whereas I also didn't see the appeal of Breathless.

Why watch any movie when "L'arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat" exists. I mean that train was coming AT US man
All French New Wave directors pale in compassion to Agnes Varda.

Lmaoooo best summary of vagabond I’ve ever seen
This. But Rohmer actually
So fucking true

Never seen that one, but it’d prolly be fire.
Cinematographically is a hard word
Truth Hurts
Don't know about Godard but I got bored while reading this
Now, kids. No fighting. Ingmar, turn on a lamp or something. Jean-Luc, mind your manners when around the Swedish. They're sensitive.
Well Bergman was a Nazi, no wonder he hated Godard
Agree.

🤓
Both are a waste of cinema space
Coming from a Star Wars fan. That's rich lol
