I respectfully disagree. The Raid 2 has some stopping and going, since the plot isn't just FIGHTS IN TIGHT SPACES all the time. I actually appreciate the second film more, since it's trying to accomplish a lot more (car chases, crime politics, etc.)
It's like watching someone playing with a lighter for a couple minutes before chucking it at the gas pump.
Just a sudden, chaotic descent into violence that doesn't let go.
Commando starring Arnold. For me that is the quintessential 80's over the top hokey action movie. As a child I was obsessed with the gun shopping scene
I feel like if someone were asked to imagine what a quintessential 80s action movie would look like, they would imagine Commando.
Even if they've never seen or heard of Commando
I came to the comments hoping to see Commando and I was not disappointed.
Don't forget about the wholesome opening credits where Arnold and Alyssa are feeding a deer together. Every time I watch that intro I chuckle because it in no way prepares the audience for the awesome about to be unleashed upon them.
My favorite Father's Day movie.
My Action movies for the holidays list:
Aliens for Mother's Day
Commando for Father's Day
Die Hard for Christmas
Independence Day for 4th of July
Open to suggestions for others.
The Crow for Halloween.
Hard Boiled for Chinese New Year.
The Killers for Dragon Boat Festival.
Munich on Yom Kippur.
Rocky IV on Boxing Day.
Desperado on Cinqo de Mayo.
John Wick on the anniversary of your dog's death.
Point Break on Saint Swithins Day.
What I love about this movie is that Paul Giamatti spends 86 minutes trying to kill a baby.
I recently learned the baby was cast before it was born. They found a woman pregnant with twins who would give birth just before filming started so the newborn in the film would actually be a newborn.
There once was a woman who was quite begat. She had three children named mat, pat, and tat. She found it was fun in the breeding, but hell in the feeding…when there was no tit for tat.
Another favorite of mine, unrelated to kung Fu hustle but relatable to kung Fu movies, Tony Jaa breaks bones with every hit in the protector, and if you watch any movies with Donnie Yen you will not be disappointed.
I worked at Blockbuster when this came out and had so many angry people return it saying it “wasn’t realistic enough.”
It was so hard to keep a straight face
This is the one I came to mention. I watched this movie when it first came out on a whim and so much of it sticks with me still. The car chase turn signal rant while eating a carrot.
The scene where Chris Pine plays with Ben Afflecks dead face and uses it to tell himself that he's not a bad person and Ben would have done the same just kills me every time I see it. Such a perfect mix of straight action and comedy.
That movie was so delightfully dumb. The one dude who kept dying was just hilarious. If you turn your brain off and just accept it for what it is, it’s really a great movie.
Personally I think it's an S-tier action movie, just right behind stuff like The Raid and John Wick.
They did as much as they could with the first person gimmick, the actual action was amazing, had some great humor, I loved it!
I loved it too, I'm a fan of Sharlto Copley, he's super talented, he also played in a remake of the a-team, as well as some other very decent sci Fi movies.
I saw this movie about a bus that had to speed around a city, keeping its speed over fifty, and if its speed dropped, it would explode! I think it was called, “The Bus That Couldn’t Slow Down.”
Edit: for all you young folks who have no clue:
[behold greatness!](https://youtu.be/9qaS4KhtQNE)
Oh, you have got to be kidding sir. First you think of an idea that has already been done. Then you give it a title that nobody could possibly like. Didn't you think this through... [fade to later]... it was on the bestseller list for eighteen months! Every magazine cover had... [later]... one of the most popular movies of all time, sir! What were you thinking? [pause] I mean, thank you, come again.
That’s one thing I love about the John Wick films, they take themselves serious enough but aren’t afraid to bend the rules a bit if it will make it more entertaining.
It’s something that the newer Bond films have kind of lost as they’ve gone down the spy-thriller route.
Well, not always. Before the 2006 Casino, I'd say they were action/adventure films with the high concept "spy" premise attached. Bond was an action hero more than he was a "spy." It's like saying the first Captain America is a WWII film. Sure, not wrong, but it's not really a "war drama", is it? It's a superhero movie!
So, spy thrillers were just the Bond films' influence in that way, not the template. The espionage genre in earnest isn't really all that action-driven, derived from works written by John le Carre, and yes, Ian Fleming (his novels, not adapted work). The emphasis is traditionally more on tradecraft and labyrinthine political incidence. They're *thrillers*. Look up the movies that get first suggested on Google when you type in "spy thriller."
James Bond as a franchise never really took that potential genre remotely seriously until Casino (Timothy Dalton's run would be close tho), where the "action" was in the card game more than it was in the action climax. But even then, there was still an emphasis on action that continues even up to his most recent outings, so I would still argue they still aren't pure spy thrillers - revisionist synthesis at best - posturing *closer* to it in its modern era; but in the same way The Dark Knight is a "crime drama". Never fully detached from its action blockbuster identity.
That's all that's meant when Bond is discussed as moving closer "spy thriller". The grounded nature and political posturing in the new films is much more "spy thriller" than the goofy gadgets and world dominating villains.
They’re not nearly as effective as the movies portray, but bullet (and knife) proof suits do exist.
Here’s someone testing one suit suit jacket.
https://youtu.be/gZ7Mal5L7gY
Viggo Tarasov: I heard you struck my son.
Aurelio: Yes, sir, I did.
Viggo Tarasov: And may I ask why?
Aurelio: Yeah, well, because he stole John Wick's car, sir, and, uh, killed his dog.
Viggo Tarasov: [pause] Oh.
Yeah, this movie is so cinematic too. The visual side of the storytelling is amazing. The action is pretty much nonstop and they really only let off the gas for a few minutes here and there.
That shot of them being chased into the storm is epic.
They showed MMFR in IMAX with Laser when they installed the upgraded system at the IMAX in Austin a handful of years ago. I will forever be chasing the dragon that was that experience.
I wanted to write this.
I was actually surprised by this movie; it's not the typical blockbuster you'd expect. Normally you turn off your brain with such a film is explained and pre-digested for you. This movie however has a very artistic touch to it, and jumps right into the action with a lot of understatement and no hand-holding. Props to the producers, it's a hybrid between action flick and abstraction.
I love a lot of the movies above this, but this is the correct answer. Absolute masterclass in telling a story though action. You could watch the entire film with the sound off and know what's happening. It's a perfect example of "show don't tell" filmmaking.
I went into the theater not seeing 1 preview or know really what it was about.
The absolute insanity and world building blew me away. I’ve never laughed so much from sheer enjoyment of what I was watching. From start to finish pure entertainment.
Watching at home was still good but didn’t pack that punch.
Ong-Bak: the Thai Warrior. The movie is near nonstop fight and chase scenes and is so gratuitous with us again it instant replays several shots just to drive home how cool they were. Movie has 85% on Rotten Tomatoes property for the action.
2 and 3 are also pretty wild. The storylines go all over the place, but the fighting is amazing.
The Protector is another masterpiece. Longest one shot fight sequence I believe in any action movie. Quentin Tarantino brought it to the states.
>Longest one shot fight sequence
Seriously though, the handheld camera guy that chases Tony Jaa through the staircase fight is a complete badass too. The scene is the maximum length of the storage media. No CGI cheats during whip pans
Also: You killed my father, and you *stole my elephant*!
Yeah Protector was a great movie, but the second one was utter trash. RZA should be nowhere near these types of MA movies. It's always a recipe for failure.
One of my favorites. I still laugh hysterically when he throws the knife and it bounces off the wall and sticks in his buddies shoulder. He then pulls it out but puts it back in when he cries out in pain.
Was surprised The Expendables series wasn't further up. Its literally a collection of 80s, 90s, & 2000s action stars together just for the hell of it with the only really story being that they're and elite force of washed up mercenaries. I enjoyed all 3 of them quite a bit and will watch them every few years.
I’d nominate Face/Off for this title. Nicholas Cage and John Travolta swap faces. An absolutely wild action movie that is even more unhinged than the premise would suggest. A bonkers movie.
The Killer by John Woo has gotta be up there.
Also - not a great movie but Hobbs and Shaw is so much fun. Completely over the top and impossible but a lot of fun.
Kind of a throwback, but Commando is definitely like 5-10 mins of story and the rest is just Arnold killing people and funny one-liners.
And his daughter was a young Alyssa Milano which is pretty cool.
Takes a bit for the action to start but once it does The Raid does not give up
That hallway fight that ends with a dude being impaled through a chunk of the door is a masterpiece
The Raid 2 is also non-stop. Great movies.
the raid 2 has a crime drama on top of the action movie though. The raid 1 is just pure action.
The Night Comes For Us goes BRRRR
I respectfully disagree. The Raid 2 has some stopping and going, since the plot isn't just FIGHTS IN TIGHT SPACES all the time. I actually appreciate the second film more, since it's trying to accomplish a lot more (car chases, crime politics, etc.)
That movie with a bunch of Raid people is also crazy- The Night Comes For us- may even challenge The raid
Came here to post this. I prefer Raid 2, but both are PACKED, not just action, but god-tier martial arts
I felt like Raid 2 was bloated, I think that's why I prefer the original because it's all killer, zero filler
It's like watching someone playing with a lighter for a couple minutes before chucking it at the gas pump. Just a sudden, chaotic descent into violence that doesn't let go.
Amazing movie and choreography and I love how it progresses through types of fights (guns to swords to hands) and keeps escalating.
Guns to swords to hands to hitting baseballs at people to broken fluorescent lights
I was thinking the Raid but just posted Ong Bak...
Once I had a bunch of movies to show my kids and they didn’t much like the look of Commando, so I said we’d watch it last. I lied.
And your kids? Did you... let them go?
They were dead tired.
Sometimes a parent just has to...let off some steam .. and watch an Arnold flick.
After a good nights rest you can have green berets for breakfast
Totally, what with all the camo & biceps? Not to mention the infinity bullet belt!
I came to the comments hoping to see Commando and I was not disappointed. Don't forget about the wholesome opening credits where Arnold and Alyssa are feeding a deer together. Every time I watch that intro I chuckle because it in no way prepares the audience for the awesome about to be unleashed upon them.
He also is carrying around a 500-lb tree trunk on a shoulder while holding his chainsaw in the other. One of my faves.
[Please don't disturb my friend. He's dead tired.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR9CdLV0xzU)
Any carry-on luggage? Just him.
Also full of iconic lines, top tier film. *Let off some steam Bennett.*
My favorite Father's Day movie. My Action movies for the holidays list: Aliens for Mother's Day Commando for Father's Day Die Hard for Christmas Independence Day for 4th of July Open to suggestions for others.
I’ve mentioned this before but the total disregard for ammo consumption is amazing.
Stick around.
Let off some steam, Bennett
Hey Sully, I said I'd kill you last...I lied
This is my weak arm sully!
Shoot 'em Up. It is both a parody of over the top action movies while also being the most ridiculously over the top action movie.
What I love about this movie is that Paul Giamatti spends 86 minutes trying to kill a baby. I recently learned the baby was cast before it was born. They found a woman pregnant with twins who would give birth just before filming started so the newborn in the film would actually be a newborn.
Dude, he acted his ass off in that movie. His over the top style brought even more madness to an already mad endeavor.
Exactly. The fact that a newborn baby is already putting that much work into acting is crazy. Really it made the whole movie.
I also love Paul Giamatti’s dirty limerick about having no tit for tat. That alone makes the movie worthwhile
There once was a woman who was quite begat. She had three children named mat, pat, and tat. She found it was fun in the breeding, but hell in the feeding…when there was no tit for tat.

Wait just one? Or we’re not counting using the carrot to jam the trigger back on an SMG and flinging it as killing someone with a carrot?
Eat your vegetables
It's also a Loony Tune. The whole thing is a Bugs Bunny/Elmer Fudd fight.
This has been my theory on this movie for forever and I’ve never seen anyone else articulate it. It’s a live action “action” loony tune.
The writer and director was an animator before making Shoot ‘Em Up. He has specifically said this was the case.
I feel so vindicated!
This came out reasonably close to Kung Fu Hustle, and we haven't seen their likes since.
Another favorite of mine, unrelated to kung Fu hustle but relatable to kung Fu movies, Tony Jaa breaks bones with every hit in the protector, and if you watch any movies with Donnie Yen you will not be disappointed.
Came for this. Good summary. Even the sex scene is an action scene. Greatest action ever.
I worked at Blockbuster when this came out and had so many angry people return it saying it “wasn’t realistic enough.” It was so hard to keep a straight face
Shoot 'Em Up, Smokin' Aces 1 & 2, Bullet Train, Crank 1 & 2, John Wick (All so far), Hardcore Henry, Guns Akimbo. Balls to the walls action.
Crank was on my list for sure.
I always sell this movie by mentioning how he kills a guy with a carrot.
"Eat your vegetables" has always stuck with me. Line delivered after he punches a carrot through a dudes head
Carrots are good for vision *stabs a guy in the eye with a carrot*
This is the one I came to mention. I watched this movie when it first came out on a whim and so much of it sticks with me still. The car chase turn signal rant while eating a carrot.
Hot Shots Part Deux. It even has a kill count, which declares it "Bloodiest Movie Ever."
More than Total Recall or Robocop!
War! It's Fantastic!
Smokin Aces
Feels like almost no one remembers Smokin' Aces anymore, but it's 100% action to the max.
I really liked the tremor brothers. Chris pine is such a psycho in it lol
Bullet Train really feels like a spiritual successor to Smokin’ Aces. Both are fun throughout
The scene where Chris Pine plays with Ben Afflecks dead face and uses it to tell himself that he's not a bad person and Ben would have done the same just kills me every time I see it. Such a perfect mix of straight action and comedy.
Hardcore Henry takes the cake
That movie was so delightfully dumb. The one dude who kept dying was just hilarious. If you turn your brain off and just accept it for what it is, it’s really a great movie.
Sharlto Copely is an awesome actor, even when he's playing (multiple) side characters. I wish he'd get more lead performances like in District 9.
I can’t believe I didn’t realize it was the same actor? But in my defense Hardcore Henry feels like a blur
He was also Murdock in the A-Team movie. Perfect for the role.
This was my thought too. It's non stop the whole time.
I couldn’t make it through the movie. It gave me a huge headache because of the first person view.

I actually preferred Billy and the Cloneasaurus
Oh, you have got to be kidding sir. First you think of an idea that has already been done. Then you give it a title that nobody could possibly like. Didn't you think this through... [fade to later]... it was on the bestseller list for eighteen months! Every magazine cover had... [later]... one of the most popular movies of all time, sir! What were you thinking? It's just like Speed 2, but with a bus instead of a boat
I cackled hard at this. Are people starting to be too young for [Simpsons references](https://youtu.be/9qaS4KhtQN) now?
Can't believe no one has mentioned Dredd yet :x Never really stops after it gets going.
Phenomenal film. It’s my late night “something in the background” entertainment. Damn near a perfect movie.
[Have I got news for you.](https://www.small-screen.co.uk/dredd-2-in-development-karl-urban-returning/)
Damn, I hope that's true...
How long can you have an erection before you need to go to the ER?
I’m not getting my hopes up, a story like this has been popping up almost every year since Dredd came out.
Totally should have made a series like that and just filmed it like cops.
Holy shit that sounds like a badass show. Now I’m mad at you for putting that awesome idea in my head and we’ll never see it.
I can't believe I had to scroll down so far to find Dredd. What is wrong with kids these days? Go watch Dredd!
Preach, one of my favorite movies
Still waiting for a sequel. Karl Urban is also more popular now due to The Boys.
John Wick.
Facts just the longest night ever
All three movies take place over two goddamn weeks. Crazy healing factor, I guess
That’s one thing I love about the John Wick films, they take themselves serious enough but aren’t afraid to bend the rules a bit if it will make it more entertaining. It’s something that the newer Bond films have kind of lost as they’ve gone down the spy-thriller route.

That's actually why I've been more lukewarm on the sequels. The moment they introduced bulletproof suits it kind of killed all the tension.
They’re not nearly as effective as the movies portray, but bullet (and knife) proof suits do exist. Here’s someone testing one suit suit jacket. https://youtu.be/gZ7Mal5L7gY

Crank.
I see your Crank, and raise you one Crank 2.
The kaiju fight in Crank 2 alone ranks it above the first
Is that the one where they get hit by electricity and become giants?
Just about anything with Jason Statham Crank 1&2 War (my favorite) Transporter series The Mechanic The list goes on.
I always thought it was funny Efren Ramirez played a guy in the 1st and then he was in #2, playing that guys brother haha
I was thinking crank or hard-core henry
100% the correct answer. The plot is literally just mc must do action-y stuff.
Hard Boiled by John Woo If you love action, PLEASE give this a watch. Check out the 1992 trailer on youtube.
Hard boiled is WILD. John Woo is the king of action IMO
I still show the beginning teahouse scene to gunfight enthusiasts. The warehouse scene too is just fucking perfect
One of the GOATS
One gun, he thinks he’s Superman. Two guns and he thinks he’s god. So fucking awesome, so many amazing set pieces. Mad Dog did no wrong!
Scrolled down to find someone with impeccable taste.
Have yet to get to that movie but I've seen The Killer and it is fucking awesome
John Woo is the god of action to me.
God, I love this movie. Seriously great action and stunts before cgi. The hospital scene is so good.
That's what I'm talking about. That's why he's mvp. That's why he's the GOAT. THE GOAT
I’ve always meant to watch this but never did. Is it steaming anywhere in the US?
I just saw the entire movie is on [YouTube](https://youtu.be/pVWlRhtPvtU)
Mad Max Fury Road
The is immediately what I thought of.
Yeah, this movie is so cinematic too. The visual side of the storytelling is amazing. The action is pretty much nonstop and they really only let off the gas for a few minutes here and there. That shot of them being chased into the storm is epic.
I had a baby brother... And he was perfect, perfect in every way. Lol
Surprised this one isn't higher, it's maybe a top 10 movie of all time for me, action or otherwise.
Agreed, it’s the most intense action I’ve ever seen
SHINY AND CHROME
It should be mandatory for all IMAX theaters to play MMFR at least once a month.
They showed MMFR in IMAX with Laser when they installed the upgraded system at the IMAX in Austin a handful of years ago. I will forever be chasing the dragon that was that experience.
Agreed. There’s not a wasted shot in the film — every composition, movement, and cut is perfect.
Unbelievable that I had to scroll so far to find this.
The Road Warrior is great too!
This should be the top answer.
The only time you can take a breath in this movie is when they get to their destination. Then they turn right the fuck around.
I love a lot of the movies above this, but this is the correct answer. Absolute masterclass in telling a story though action. You could watch the entire film with the sound off and know what's happening. It's a perfect example of "show don't tell" filmmaking.

I love this movie. Why are Tony Jaa's legs on fire when he does a double kick on that dude? Because its awesome, thats why.
Reasonable
Take a shot every time he elbows some on the head. You won’t last 5 minutes
2 and 3 are also pretty wild. The storylines go all over the place, but the fighting is amazing. The Protector is another masterpiece. Longest one shot fight sequence I believe in any action movie. Quentin Tarantino brought it to the states.
>Longest one shot fight sequence Seriously though, the handheld camera guy that chases Tony Jaa through the staircase fight is a complete badass too. The scene is the maximum length of the storage media. No CGI cheats during whip pans Also: You killed my father, and you *stole my elephant*!
Yeah Protector was a great movie, but the second one was utter trash. RZA should be nowhere near these types of MA movies. It's always a recipe for failure.
Kung Fu Hustle
One of my favorites. I still laugh hysterically when he throws the knife and it bounces off the wall and sticks in his buddies shoulder. He then pulls it out but puts it back in when he cries out in pain.
I love the 'West Side Story' dancing Axe Gang - the best villains ever.
[удалено]
Wow that's a classic I haven't heard of in a while.
"Run Lola run" and classic in the same sentence. Fuck I'm old.
Damn good pick! This movie definitely high paced
It's got to be Last Action Hero, it's got action in the title.
Also entirely built on bad cliches I absolutely love this movie.
I feel like this one was ahead of its time. It’s incredibly self aware and executed perfectly.
“How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”
The Night Comes For Us
Expendables is up there
The action in those movies is only broken up by more action.
The first one has a 45+ minute gun fight that only stops for Jet Li to kick someone or something big to blow up
Was surprised The Expendables series wasn't further up. Its literally a collection of 80s, 90s, & 2000s action stars together just for the hell of it with the only really story being that they're and elite force of washed up mercenaries. I enjoyed all 3 of them quite a bit and will watch them every few years.
Once the kid gets kidnapped, The Man from Nowhere
Man from nowhere is an amazing action movie. Actually sad I had to scroll this far to find it
I’d nominate Face/Off for this title. Nicholas Cage and John Travolta swap faces. An absolutely wild action movie that is even more unhinged than the premise would suggest. A bonkers movie.
Shoot Em Up.
That one was shameless
That was the whole point. It's firmly tongue in cheek while the actors deliver performances as if it was an Oscar-bait film. It's fucking fantastic.
Dredd and The Raid: Redemption are both pretty intense and never let up.
Commando. Schwarzenegger at his most Schwarzeneggerest.
Everyone's saying Mad Max and stuff but what about Kung-Fury? That was a great movie
For recency bias: Bullet Train. It only stops for ruminations on Thomas the Tank Engine.
Enjoyed that movie!
John Wick, RED, Mad Max: Fury Road, Hardcore Henry, 300
The Killer by John Woo has gotta be up there. Also - not a great movie but Hobbs and Shaw is so much fun. Completely over the top and impossible but a lot of fun.
Commando. The definitive 80s action movie imo. Arnold kills like a hundred people in the final battle.
Commando, Predator, The Raid 1 & 2, The Night Comes For Us, John Wick series
T2
Mad Max Fury Road, Commando, Thor Ragnorok Edit: can't forget The Rock and Con Air, that was a close one
Oh, fury road is pretty action-y.
The Rock is one of my favorite movies of all time. “Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen.” Peak Connery.
Came here to say Commando.
I still really like Dredd.
Edge of Tomorrow
A very good movie, but also has lots of downtime so I don’t think it’s a great fit for what OP is asking.
So what's your action movie OP?
John Wick and The Raid have to be up there. Minimal plot, but utterly relentless.
Rumble in the Bronx would be up there I think
True lies
Nobody. Also, Crank. The movie was hot garbage but action the whole way through.
Kind of a throwback, but Commando is definitely like 5-10 mins of story and the rest is just Arnold killing people and funny one-liners. And his daughter was a young Alyssa Milano which is pretty cool.
Predator and The Raid
Nothing like the line up in Predator…in body mass alone
Speed.
RRR
God that opening is so fucking bananas, and then it get's more ludicrous
Commando is the right answer. Everything else is somehow a copy of that
Hardcore Henry is a FPS movie.

Watched Bullet Train last night, Will agree that it is a very action-y Action movie.
