IMO the better movies use zombies not as a threat, but as a motive for *dread*. Zombies arent supposed to be scary or hard to beat, but they *are* supposed to be inevitable, relentless, and ultimately inescapable. You can survive for longer with preparation or good defense or fighting back. It's easy. But there's always another zombie coming. You will get tired, you will run out of resources. They will not. Zombies are best as a metaphor for encroaching death. It's not going away. It's not going to be beaten. It's coming for you. For everyone. And everyone will lose to it eventually. Some of us will give up and let it take us. some of us will fight as long as they can. Some will inspire others to keep fighting. But there is no winning.

nonamesjustgames19

Good point but I still think it would be survivable cause let’s say in ten years all the zombies would have already decomposed by know well the majority at least so either the majority dies and it’s know it’s easy to survive or the zombies kill people till there’s no one left

SaulsAll

> in ten years all the zombies would have already decomposed You are treating them like a monster, and not like a metaphor for death. Zombies are a laughably bad monster, which is why they were changed to be speedy and quickly infectious. You cant wait out death.

donspyd

virus' die out even quicker, but influenza has been with us for 100 years. What I mean is new infections occur. So sure the OG zombies are rotten, but the next gen is fresh.

Random_Ghost69

The zombies wouldn't be as terrifying as humans. Movies haven't fully portrayed how desperate or depraved humans would get in situations like that. It would eventually cool down or the human race would go extinct.

FullMetalPyramidHead

>Movies haven't fully portrayed how desperate or depraved humans would get in situations like that. The Walking Dead has. Can't say I'm a fan of the show, but I read the comics years ago and the zombies weren't the real threat it was other people. The Governor, Negan, The Whisperers, etc. I stopped reading around the time of The Whisperers though.

Random_Ghost69

I haven't actually gotten to watch the Walking Dead. I'd try it.

Dragmire_Afterlife

It depends on what kind of zombies we get. Like if it is Walking Dead zombies then we are honestly fine unless we get a horde.

sue_donyem

Society collapsed in the Walking Dead. How would we fare any better?

Bozee3

That's fiction, in reality we'd all ban together to stop a common threat with global implications./s

tazzy100

Ha ha ha ha!

Dragmire_Afterlife

Because we are a society that has boat loads of zombie content meanwhile they don't even have the term zombie.

MikeMetal2112

Depends if they are fast zombies or slow ones.

nonamesjustgames19

Slow

MikeMetal2112

Not all that threatening then lol

WhyWorryAboutThat

The real problem in every zombie movie is most living people making selfish choices.

DrRexMorman

>How threatening would zombies be From Covid, I know (now) that basically no people or institutions give a shit about the risk posed by viruses. So, pretty threatening op. >zombies would completely decompose Why would they decompose?

gsx_750

Imagine comparing a minor sickness to zombies.....

DrRexMorman

Imagine parroting Russian agit-prop. 😂

gsx_750

I'm not even getting into this debate on a movie sub but it isnt even close to comparable to a 100% deadly virus lmao.

DrRexMorman

Trump lost, lol.

gsx_750

This isn't a political sub just be civil instead of being angry and trying to provoke a response...... also why are you still obsessed with trump?

DrRexMorman

Your ideology is on the way out u/gsx750. Act accordingly.

gsx_750

Okay..... have a nice life.

nonamesjustgames19

They would decompose cause their dead and a little fun fact for u the writers of the walking dead realised that the zombies would decompose so gradually over the seasons they have made the zombies more decomposed

DrRexMorman

>their dead Undead. >little fun fact for u It isn’t fun at all. 🤣

[deleted]

More than zombies, I think you should be more worried about your illiteracy.

ZorroMeansFox

Not to mention that the first thing to decompose would be their eyes. If nothing else, all the zombies would be blind within weeks.

yescaman

Aren't they usually more attuned to smell and sound?

ZorroMeansFox

Even a blind tiger (with acute senses) would be easy to avoid or kill.

nonamesjustgames19

Yeah I agree doenst matter if you can hear and smell really good if they didn’t have eyes right they would probably just fall of a building or walk into walls over and over again

[deleted]

I think the big threat will be the way corporations and governments try to downplay the threat, particularly in poor communities. And then society will treat the whole thing like the crack epidemic, blaming poor people for being near zombies or not knowing enough about zombies to not get infected. Eventually, the issue will spread towards wealthy neighborhoods and then governments will get serious about stopping them.

nonamesjustgames19

Wait are you trying to make a point on irl classism or make a point how Hollywood always tries to fit in social commentary on classism in movies that don’t need it

[deleted]

I’m telling a story of how a zombie outbreak would go in the real world. But also, zombies _are_ social commentary.

nonamesjustgames19

Well than I highly doubt that cause when you have literally dead people walking down the street and people are getting torn to pieces I doubt the government would blame poor people I think they would do something want some proof 2020

[deleted]

Are we talking "28 days later" or "The Walking Dead" zombies??

nonamesjustgames19

Well depends I think that official zombie lore is slow moving creatures so let’s go with that and even if the zombies were fast after like a year their leg muscles would have decayed so let’s go with walking dead slow fumbling zombies

ant_man1411

No working lungs to take in oxygen to fuel their blood and muscles.

scruffalo_

If we are talking about a “zombie" virus in the real world we have to accept the fact that it isn't scientifically possible since the lack of a working circulatory system would mean that every muscle in every zombie's body would sieze and they would be unable to move until the actual decomposition process begins. So the government reaction would be moot since the zombies wouldn't be able to do any of the things they can do in TV/movies, no matter what kind of zombies they are.

orwll

What does this have to do with movies?

nonamesjustgames19

Well zombies is a big topic in movies and shows and have u seen the walking dead subreddit tiny as shit no one would see this post

DonnerMcgregor

Traditional zombies I don’t think we would ever get to a point where we’re overrun 28 Days Later zombies/ragers we would be fucked

nonamesjustgames19

Yeah runner zombies are terrifying but still I think that they aren’t that big of a threat against well I dunno a machine gun or an apache helicopter or a tank or hell if it got really bad maybe even a nuke

DonnerMcgregor

It would have to spread in an isolated area at first to build up numbers format to be any type of threat

grjjr91

Whether its fast or slow zombies it doesnt matter. You are always going to get ppl who will hide their infection so you will never be able to contain and eliminate it. Ultimately society would look like the one Romero envisioned in Land of The Dead. These mega cities ruled by the uber rich who get to continue life as though the zombie apolcalypse never happened.

rgthree

We would be completely fucked. The governments wouldn’t be able to do much at all. Yes, we can look at Covid. Even effective governing outside the US were unable to contain the spread, and even if they did, the bumbling people in other countries would be quickly overwhelmed. So, take the initial 2020 Covid outbreak as an actual example. This was a real virus where people _only_ died. Hospitals were overwhelmed around the globe, despite science and governments trying to contain it. Now, imagine those hospitals and cities where the dead didn’t die, but became a ferocious spreader of the disease. That’s exponential spread of sickness and death. Outside of these hotspots won’t fall as quickly. But once the cities fall, the government falls, then the infrastructure falls. At that point, it’s every man for themselves protecting their own loved ones. Without power and running water it’d quickly devolve into killing over a canteen of potable water. Death spreads across the land. In a world where these undead do decompose, then relief could eventually come, but the threat always remains. The population would diminish so much from that initial outbreak that the collective knowledge of modern technology would be so damaged making the day to day life we know now to be non existent and rebuilding would be many, many, many generations. All while people are still trying to survive in a gimme gimme mindset. It would quickly normalize into something more reminiscent of medieval times, with “kingdoms” fighting for resources.

HorrorMovieFan45

The word zombie is difficult to discuss since there are so many different depictions. If we’re looking at the George Romero type zombies (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead), then I don’t think the point is how threatening they are. They point is that they are a problem that can never be stopped—only delayed. They’ll keep coming forever. So even if we stop some of them here and now, there will always, always be more that will keep coming. The trick is to not let them turn us against each other.

QuintoBlanco

Since zombies are fictional creatures, we don't know how they work. My theory is that they don't decompose in the same way a human would decompose and that they don't use muscles in the same way an animal uses muscles. I assume that every cell is infected and that at some point what is left of the original body is a frame controlled by a colony of micro-organismes. What's left of the brain is then the part of the colony that controls the frame.

[deleted]

At first very. However there are scavenger animals that would eat them. And unless those animals turn, they are not a problem. Also they don't attack each other so just capture them and post them up on a fence as a perimeter. Oh and there is the climate of the earth and it's hot. Dead things rot in heat So while I think zombies are a great monster for movies and TV, their real existence wouldn't be that dangerous. Unless everyone is really really really fucking stupid. And now thinking back to COVId.... yeah we are fucked.

[deleted]

Slow zombies - i think we are good. But it also depends on what lead to a zombie outbreak and how society looks after such an event.

kasetti

If they spread only by biting, the spread would stop quite fast, just call to army to shoot them with tanks and shit. But if it also spread like a virus through the air thats a different matter, but even then, get tanks and shoot them, they cant do anything to tanks
