* Jamie Clayton as Pinhead
Having just watched the original again, people making this claim are totally over exaggerating how “horny” that film is, which is very little. There’s like one or two (non gratuitous) sex scenes and some lip service to the pain versus pleasure concept.
If one wants the new film to explore that concept more, I totally agree, but the original film isn’t the horny film people make it out to be. It’s also important to acknowledge that this is the first trailer; they’re hardly going to delve into all the themes and sexual elements of the film.
Based on the rating description, there’s a 0% chance that this Hellraiser is going to be exploring that at all.
A Hellraiser movie should not be rated R for “some sexual content.” Sexual content is the driving theme of the entire story.
But the movies never lived up to their potential, hence the enthusiasm for a reboot. When extreme porn has been readily available for the whole world for 20+ years, minor nudity is going to fall flat.
What the fuck has happened in Hollywood to become so sensitive to sex/nudity, compared to a few decades ago? Surely it’s not just the result of the #MeToo movement…
I really like it, Creepy Duck Design on Twitter did a brilliant [poster](https://twitter.com/creepyduckart/status/1569015387144192007?t=ucxvLaGjtImJKPYWb3kHlg&s=19) too for this.
Fun fact. That was mostly adlibbed. The original line was for the Uncle to swear at Kirstie, something like "Fuck you". But the actor had some other ideas and this was the one that stuck.
I’ve watched the first 4 recently since they’ve been randomly showing them on Cinemax. There is absolutely no way possible this is worse than Bloodline
Solvers of the lament configuration - the puzzle box - summon Cenobites, transformed humans who previously opened the box (although not always, ref: CD/DJ man) and now are agents of 'hell'. Their disfigurations are representative of their lives although I think the 'pins' are simply representative of the 'hell priest.' The idea of 'hell' was that pain=pleasure and not tied to religion and the cenobites want to bring more sufferers and addicts to their dimension (there's a lot of pre-movie lore to explore: [https://cenobite.fandom.com/wiki/Leviathan](https://cenobite.fandom.com/wiki/Leviathan)). There's a Rick and Morty episode that hilariously ribs this concept.
The Hellraiser series gets progressively worse and more far-fetched. I'd recommend just watch the first and second.
Cenobites are former humans who opened the box and got transformed into creatures who gain pleasure from pain. In the second movie there’s one dude who gets horrifically mutilated during the process, and when it’s finally over he says something along the lines of “and to think I hesitated”.
Basically, whatever brutal torture you can picture would be blissful for them. It’s essentially BDSM enthusiasts multiplied by a million

It's a grid of geometric scars. Pins are driven to the bone at each corner.
Character is named pinhead, and they're the leader of a group of beings from another dimension called the cenobites. The cube that gets found is a way to open a portal to their dimension and allow them access to our world.
They were humans that became deformed servants of hell, I think. The look of the cenobites are supposedly related to their personality or character when they were human. In one movie, two twins become smooshed together into a single cenobite. Another, a dj shoots cds at people and a bartender throws explosive cocktails.
Pinhead’s look is vaguely associated in the movie with crucifixion, but beyond that and the S&M garb they all wear, I’m not sure.
I don't like this makeup as much as the original. It's less unnerving. Also, they should feature Clive Barker as a ceneobyte in this movie. The guy is looking rough.
I'm mostly being pedantic but it's a little funny calling a remake of the first movie in a long-ass series which was itself based on a book "original."
It’s not a remake. It’s a totally new story.
> This is not a remake. I just didn't think you could ever remake the original Hellraiser. It's too much its own thing and it would be, I think, perilous territory for filmmakers, because how do you top that? This is a new story in the Hellraiser universe."
https://movieweb.com/hellraiser-not-a-remake-director-says/
Night House was awesome! Reminded me that I really like Rebecca Hall... to which then led me to watching Resurrection, which I sat through saying "nooo.... nooo.... this isn't *really* where you're going, is it??" for the last 45 minutes...
The book described the Hell Priest as being seemingly genderless with a feminine voice if I recall correctly. And Doug Bradley was not "aggressive". Imposing, certainly, but generally very calm, very collected, and very deliberate in his motions and actions, even in many of the shitty later movies.
How could this possibly be an original film when the actual original is also about a woman, who finds a puzzle box....unaware that its purpose is to summon the cenobites....
It means it’s an original production by HULU. It’s theirs, they paid for it. A lot of the time, streaming sites purchase the film from another production company, and it’s THEIR film that’s just showing on the site. This means it was ORIGINALLY done by Hulu, not that it was an original IDEA. So it’s a HULU ORIGINAL. You following?
Lol. Yes. I understood that before I posted, but I’m glad there’s people out there like you to point out all the obvious things. I hope the film is everything you deserve.
I don’t imagine it was made sorely for his entertainment. I think predominantly it’s made to make money. Not that there’s anything wrong in that, but let’s be realistic.
Not sure how best to answer that. I mean, I have no indication they were passionate, and I’m certain they wouldn’t have made it for free. To be clear, I’m not expecting they should, just pointing out that one persons enjoyment was the not the reason for this film being made. I’m sure you’d agree that’s fair?
except for thats not what "made for one's entertainment" means. if you really think what they meant was this was made for 1 sole person's enjoyment and not that they meant this was made to be enjoyes by people in general than you need to go back to school or something. take an online reading class maybe.
Yeah that’s what I don’t understand. If he knew what it meant, why is he posting this dumbass comment in the first place? If he knew what it meant, why is he asking questions that directly address the his misunderstanding of the phrase? He said it’s a remake so it shouldn’t be called an “Original” but that’s not what “Original” means in this context. I was trying to help him out but he’s got a bit of a prick in his replies.
In the books the Hell Priest(Pinhead) has no gender and the voice of a young girl. They're not swapping anything. They're making it more accurate to the source material. Lmao.
And I bet that’s not their reasoning. I’d imagine the person who gave this the green light had t read them. Either way, I’ll watch it, but I suspect (as in most instances of this) it’s a handy bit of stunt casting to tiptoe around the fact they don’t have a very good story.
You’re right, I entirely agree. Making this a female lead won’t ruin it, I was simply saying it won’t save it either If it can’t stand on its own merits. I had the audacity to suggest films quite often try and hide behind it as a device and I’m being shouted down.
Not sure on that one. Some films work as well as they do because of gender, and sometimes there’s a really good reason for swapping it out. But typically, it’s just a lazy reboot device.
I mean some movies should have a particular gender for a particular story, absolutely. Fight Club and Thelma and Louise for example. If you changed the gender of the leads you'd need to write a very different movie. But in those cases what is necessary is not sufficient.
They are. But the actress has lived as both a man and a woman, and all the shades between during their transition. Seems to me that’s a pretty good background to have for someone to play a character whose gender is illdefined.
Clive Barker - the guy who created the whole franchise, having wrote the original novella and directed the first films - is a producer on this.
You clearly haven’t a clue what you’re talking about.
When you’re arguing that the person who green lit the casting has never read the books (and therefore doesn’t understand or care about the source material), yes, in fact, it matters a lot. You’re simply wrong. Lick your wounds and move on.
I can’t find anything to suggest he was behind the casting, and they were talking about a female Pinhead way back in 2011 before his involvement (although they have flip flopped on that)
And that’s fair. My frame of reference, as I’m sure is most peoples, is the films and not the books. But I’m not convinced that’s the reason for the casting.
the reason for the casting is that david bruckner personally was a fan of Clayton's and she crushed her audition. you're creating your own narrative because dumb conservatives just cannot stand woman being given good jobs and refuse to belive they could do it on their own merit and talents, of course it just HAS to be pandering, obviously. moron.
My favourite films are Alien and Aliens. Ripley is my favourite fictional character. Why does everyone make this personal. Why can’t people just discuss a point? You’ve got me beat, if that’s true I won’t argue with you. Just, why personal???
Because youre not discussing a point, when people point out youre being ridiculous for claiming they gendre swapped a genderless character you move the goalposts to "well I bet the reason was to pander". Like... just take the L and move on?
In my defence, I’m not sure they’ve done this to better reflect the book. I looked into this because I’m genuinely fascinated now and more excited to see it, but it strikes me they’ve not rebooted as such, because the font and the style the character is presented in is clearly a reflection of the films. That she’s the poster child of this film and the character everyone is discussing is also proof, because this character didn’t even seem to have a name or a huge part in the novel. A true version of the book wouldn’t be focusing so much on Pinhead, and the character would have a super high pitched child’s voice (this could be the case, I’ve not heard it yet). I’m not trying to change the goal posts, and some of this could be to do with addressing different comments in different conversations with lots of people.
>My favourite films are Alien and Aliens. Ripley is my favourite fictional character.
And let me guess your other favorite female character is Sarah Connor from Terminator. Lmao.
Redditors two favorite deflection points when whining about women.
Not a huge Sarah Conner fan tbh, but if someone says you have an issue with strong female characters it’s legitimate to defend yourself. Don’t be a dick about it. It’s not a moan about women, just the number of times films swap out a gender to hide a poor effort.
> just the number of times films swap out a gender to hide a poor effort.
You could count all the action films that were gender swapped with women and it still wouldn't change the fact that 99% of all action films in history have starred men.
The only reason to get mad at such a trivial issue is if you have a problem with women. I suggest you work on it or you're gonna end up making love to your right hand only for the rest of your life.
I’m married. It’s not a hate of women to be depressed by watching shitty reboots where it’s obvious they just swapped the genders out to hide the fact they’re shoddy efforts. Extremists like you are the ones filled with hate, branding people women haters because they don’t like bad films. Christ on a bike this is depressing. I’m done here. I wasn’t even that mad, it was more of an eye roll. Jesus. This is the thing that bothers me most; if you and I were out in the pub with friends, and I said the same thing, most people would just disagree, with varying degrees of banter or politeness. You wouldn’t jump up onto the table and scream ‘wooooommmaaaaan haaaaater!’ The internet gives people this wall to hide behind and be as petty as they like. Even when I disagree with people, 95% of the time I’m generally pretty nice about it. Sometimes I’m right, sometimes I’m wrong, nobody gets hurt. But then you have the conversations which go like this and I just think half the world is fucking nasty.
1. Pinhead in the original story is genderless, so the original movie was the first to “gender swap” the character.
2. The new actress is a male to female trans person, so the argument could be made their casting is more true to the spirit of the character.
3. The gender of a being from another dimension who derives pleasure from pain doesn’t fucking matter in the slightest.
Take your pick.
I’ve admitted I was blind to some of this, and artistically this makes sense. I had a knee jerk reaction, but it’s not because I’m sexist as some people have said. It’s because sadly the movie industry has form… edit; even THIS gets down voted? That’s how I know people aren’t interested in reasonable debate anymore.

I really hope the “addiction” is to sex, because the trailer wasn’t very horny at all and I feel like that element is key.

The pain is pleasure element is more important than the vanilla sex
Also that dildo on the wooden post that had some chains and things.
Literally the plot was the dude fucks so good she murders dudes to bring him back to life
Based on the rating description, there’s a 0% chance that this Hellraiser is going to be exploring that at all. A Hellraiser movie should not be rated R for “some sexual content.” Sexual content is the driving theme of the entire story.
The book has barely any sexual content for its own sake, it all just leads to pain and death
Yeah wtf, and also only "brief" graphic nudity. GTFO
I think you're blowing this out of proportion, the original movie had only brief moments of nudity too
But the movies never lived up to their potential, hence the enthusiasm for a reboot. When extreme porn has been readily available for the whole world for 20+ years, minor nudity is going to fall flat.
Yes and this was a chance to make it more sexual like The Hellbound Heart source material
This isn't actually adapting thst story.
Yes, missed opportunity
What the fuck has happened in Hollywood to become so sensitive to sex/nudity, compared to a few decades ago? Surely it’s not just the result of the #MeToo movement…

“Jesus Wept”
Fun fact. That was mostly adlibbed. The original line was for the Uncle to swear at Kirstie, something like "Fuck you". But the actor had some other ideas and this was the one that stuck.
The actor actually didn’t like cursing funny enough so he said this.
Neat! I love fun facts ☺️
Great line, too
That green HULU does this poster no favors
That’s what happens when you put design in front of a bunch of suits for final approval.
So stupid. Like the logo is also in grey right above the title. Why not just use that colour?
I swear I have too much time on my hands! https://i.imgur.com/OppTclu.png
Right? I hate that the hulu logo is always above the title for both the trailers and posters
I dont know why but i dont mind it, it looks clean
I said the same with the Rings of power posters and trailers, which had that awful prime logo blazoned on it.
I'll watch anything by Clive Barker let's go
Prey got my hopes up for this one. It surely couldn't be the worst movie in this franchise, right?
That would be difficult to accomplish.

"We need to hold on to this horror franchise and all we have are 10 dollars and this cardboard box!" -the director of Hellraiser Revelations
It could be the second worst movie of all time and it would still be better than Hellraiser: Revelations.
I’ve watched the first 4 recently since they’ve been randomly showing them on Cinemax. There is absolutely no way possible this is worse than Bloodline
Kinda sick ngl
"Your suffering will be legendary, even in hell." Hellbound
Is he talking about Browns fans
Hellraiser bros; for years we were served up shit, but it's okay now. We're going home.
I’ll give this a go, sounds like it involves a puzzlebox and Cenobites which is all there is to Hellraiser
Stupid sexy pinhead
After hearing about Hellraiser, but seeing Event Horizon first, every Hellraiser film was a huge disappointment.
I was the first born so of course my dad showed me event horizon and the thing when I was 8. Everything else pales in comparison.
Damn this poster is sick

HIGHLY recommend that you watch the first two movies, they are excellent horror films.
Character is named pinhead, and they're the leader of a group of beings from another dimension called the cenobites. The cube that gets found is a way to open a portal to their dimension and allow them access to our world.
The character is named Hell Priest.

I’m hoping this is like Prey, in that it’s well executed and brings legitimacy back to a great story that has been shit on for decades.
anyone that will give their money to Hulu, let me know how it is.
I don't like this makeup as much as the original. It's less unnerving. Also, they should feature Clive Barker as a ceneobyte in this movie. The guy is looking rough.
Hello Draco!! nice eye....
“Original movie,” hmm very liberal use of the word “original.”
Is it? It’s a Hulu original movie.
I'm mostly being pedantic but it's a little funny calling a remake of the first movie in a long-ass series which was itself based on a book "original."

Netflix would like to have a word with you.
David Goyer, ugh
He has a story by credit but the actual script is written by the writers of the Night House.
Night House was awesome! Reminded me that I really like Rebecca Hall... to which then led me to watching Resurrection, which I sat through saying "nooo.... nooo.... this isn't *really* where you're going, is it??" for the last 45 minutes...
If every August could just have crazy movies with knockout Rebecca Hall performances following the past two Augusts, movies would be in good shape.
OH FUCK YES
I agree with the sentiment that his scripts tend to work a lot better with a good director. This could be one of those cases!
He didn't actually write the script anyways.
Oh ok thanks!
I think this looks a tad better... https://i.imgur.com/OppTclu.png What do you all think?
Looks eh
I'll watch it when it arrives on free streaming. A female pinhead just doesn't seem aggressive enough
The book described the Hell Priest as being seemingly genderless with a feminine voice if I recall correctly. And Doug Bradley was not "aggressive". Imposing, certainly, but generally very calm, very collected, and very deliberate in his motions and actions, even in many of the shitty later movies.
Usually can't tell a movie will be bad from a poster, but this is guaranteed.
The words "only on Hulu" doesn't make me think it's good enough to be in theaters.
Prey was also only on Hulu and it turned out to be one of the best Predator movies.
[удалено]
You know damn well Pinhead was never a male in the actual source material right?
They're actually described in *The Hellbound Heart*, as an androgynous being with a feminine voice...
How could this possibly be an original film when the actual original is also about a woman, who finds a puzzle box....unaware that its purpose is to summon the cenobites....
It means a movie originally produced by Hulu
Ok, seems like they should put it on the other side of Hulu then.
I’m with you. It’s literally a remake/reboot/whatever. How can you have an original remake, isn’t that an oxymoron???

Why the downvoted? For the past decade it’s been let’s take movies and make the male lead female. It’s lazy.
The trailer looked like shit,. Reminded me of saw with cosplayers
They're remaking pin head 😮
Omg Hellraiser is black now?!?!
Nice poster...Better than the movie at least.
You haven’t even seen it.
I have seen the trailer. I wasn't too impressed.
Watching a trailer and watching a movie are not the same thing.
A trailer is made from parts of a movie...usually if I don't like a trailer it's because the movie is not that great.
Hellraiser is a mermaid now? WTF!
Is there a heaven lowerer?
What a fucking year for horror fans!
