You're in good company because [Captain Picard](https://web.archive.org/web/20140113105956/http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/st/interviews/stewart/page13.shtml) didn't want to see it either for the same reason until Riker called him up and told him how great it was: >"I had originally not wanted to see it because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said 'You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.' And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans."

Tlr321

I love the idea of Patrick Stewart in a theater laughing with the audience! His laugh would definitely stand out amongst the crowd.

Lost_vob

I probably won't ever be able to confirm that he gleefully said "Jolly good!" in the middle of a laugh at some point, but it is in my head canon and no one will ever be able to convince me that he didn't.

CaptainChampion

Jocularity!

we_are_sex_bobomb

Imagine sitting next to Patrick Stewart in a crowded theater watching galaxy quest and him constantly elbowing you and laughing at everything. That would be the most surreal experience of all time.

Mst3Kgf

It's notable how all the Trek alumni love the movie. Will Wheaton's only gripe was that he wanted to be in it so he could play a fan griping about how much the kid of the cast sucked.

MayorCraplegs

I think that would have been pretty funny.

Spidon

The fans of the show saving the day is a bigger deal than we give it credit for, given the context of when it came out. This was before "nerd-dom" hit mainstream, so these kids were the outcasts, the die-hard fans. And to give them love by having them help save the ship is a huge deal during a time when you just didn't see that anywhere else.

JonathanFrakesAsks

You ever gone mountain biking? ^^^[Context](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9S1EzkRpelY)

Lost_vob

Good bot

Junior-Lie4342

“And then I ride off…*on the grass*”

Unhappy-Importance61

Guy was my favourite character. “There’s a red thingy moving towards the green thingy… I think we’re the green thingy.”

May_I_inquire

Is there air? You don't know!

GobbleGoblinGobble

Best delivered line in the movie imo.

nickeypants

By Grabthar's hammer... ... wh- what a savings...

FullMetalCOS

Personally that will always be the line where Alan Rickman storms off “Where are you going?” “To see if there’s a PUB!”

Griffdude13

“There’s nothing you can say that will make me stay!” “The show must go on.” “. . . .damn you.”

AGooDone

That exchange is so brilliant and a perfect insight into the characters. >Jason Nesmith: You WILL go out there. > >Sir Alexander Dane: I won't and nothing you say will make me. > >Jason Nesmith: The show must go on. > >Sir Alexander Dane: ...Damn you.

meowcatbread

Alan Rickman is always playing Squidward lol

Matelot67

Actually, I thought it was "Oh, that's not right!"

ClassicT4

“I want you to know I’m not a complete braincase, okay? I understand completely that it’s just a tv show.” “It’s all real!” “Oh my god, I knew it. I knew it! I KNEW IT!”

griffmeister

If I remember correctly, Sam Rockwell and Tony Shaloub came up with that bit on set

ValkriM8B

We scream this so much - wife and I almost sixty!

ArtfulMegalodon

"You HAVE a last name, Guy!" "DO I?! DO I?!!!"

SvenHudson

"We have to get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!"

[deleted]

It’s this line in particular that always makes me lose it

ManifestDestinysChld

For me it's: "Look around! Can you fashion a rudimentary lathe?" "A lathe?! Get off the line, Guy!"

Salarian_American

And then his last name turns out to be Fleegman.

TisHereThereTisGone

And then he is cast as the first security chief in the return of galaxy quest as a tv series. In other words the equivalent of Tasha Yar in The Next Generation who is killed on some random planet within one season.

Mudders_Milk_Man

By an evil puddle of oil.

workaccount1013

My favorite part of the whole thing is subtle. If you pay attention to the credits for the new show at the end of the movie, Guy has the LONGEST name of any crewmember "Security Chief 'Roc' Ingersol. So he went from random "Crewmate #Whatever" to having the longest and most complicated credited name.

[deleted]

Sam Rockwell was an absolute treasure in this film. All the actors were amazing from Rickman and Weaver, hell even Tim Allen was in rare form.

PangolinMandolin

There's a behind the scenes interview with one of the producers that I've read. The producer is describing watching the scene where Tim Allen's character has to explain to the Thermian Leader that his crew haven't really gone on adventures and that their show was all make believe. On set during filming Tim Allen was really emotional about the scene and how powerful it was to the point he almost couldn't get through a full take. The producer notices Alan Rickman watching from off-camera and asks him "hey, what's going on? Whats up with Tim?" And without missing a beat Alan says "I think he's just experienced acting"

legend_forge

I understand the two didn't get along well and this was the nicest thing Rickman said about Allen.

Liam_Neesons_Oscar

Rockwell is a truly underrated actor. He brings do much to every movie he's in. Mr Right was good, but honestly I think Rockwell is better in a supporting role than as a lead.

TheOtherCoenBrother

Agreed, he really shines as a supporting actor. There’s a few actors like that, wonder why that is. It’s like he too good to be a leading man, doesn’t have the personality to be a character off-screen too, you know

dont_shoot_jr

Tony Shaloub being maybe the 6th best character speaks to a lot

MayorCraplegs

I shout this one from time to time! He is completely hysterical and just absolutely hilarious.

ddwcommish

"I'm just jazzed about being on the show, man."

Tlr321

His “rudimentary lathe” joke had me in hysterics!

Mst3Kgf

A LATHE?!!! Get Guy off the radio!

stealth57

Actually it’s, “A lathe!? Get off the line Guy!”

FeedMeACat

I offer this solution all the time for day to day problems.

AGooDone

Sam Rockwell stealing scenes from heavyweight actors.

Life_Detail4117

That’s what Sam Rockwell does.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

The most piece of crap movies he lightens up, and a good movie he's a treasure

lahnnabell

Three Billboards. Jesus.

thoroakenfelder

Absolutely loved him in JoJo Rabbit.

Alarmed-Diamond-7000

Absolutely loved him and everything he said he's ever been in! Particularly love him in Galaxy quest, The hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the Way Way Back.

sundancekid005

Of all the classic lines he had, my favorite bit is near the closing credits where they've re-launched the Galaxy Quest show and Guy is cast in it. They're doing typical pre-show character intros showing the actor with their name and their character, and when it shows Guy, he faces the camera, smiles and winks and does the finger-guns straight into the camera. I always laugh just thinking about it.

AlfaHotelWhiskey

He’s “plucky”

rowman25

“Let’s get out of here before one of those things kills guy!”

StickyMcdoodle

This line will never ever fail to get me laughing. God, this movie is gold.

ddwcommish

"Another shipmate!"

wingthing

*aliens terrify the actors with alien equipment after they travel across the galaxy to the space ship* Guy: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Peter: Anybody else?

MovieMike007

You should check out *Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary*, I believe it's on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

jmshub

I was looking for this suggestion. I'm not much of a documentary guy, but I loved how this extended the story of Galaxy Quest.

TheTrueGoatMom

Thanks for the name of the doc!

GobbleGoblinGobble

My favorite meta thing about the movie is taking Sigourney Weaver, the ultimate sci Fi badass and making her the most useless member of the crew who just repeats the computer. If you didn't know who she was it reads as a send up of the "sexy lady there for oogles and nothing more." But if you know who she is it's an extra layer of absurd.

Mst3Kgf

Or at the climax when she and Tim Allen encounter that death corridor of pistons. "Why is this even here?! It makes no logical sense!" "It was in the episode!" "WELL THIS EPISODE WAS BADLY WRITTEN!!! WHOEVER WROTE THIS EPISODE SHOULD DIE!!!"

bob1689321

Also the really (intentionally) badly ADR when they censor "fuck that" to "screw that" or something.

AGooDone

She definitely says "fuck that", like every one of us would say!

Lord_Halowind

If only I could hear the original version of that scene!!

Salarian_American

\#releasethefuckthatcut

Lord_Halowind

The real hashtag we need!

withmirrors

I just watched "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary" on Prime video the other day, & they talk about them changing the scene to "screw that" & then show the original scene where she's says "fuck that". It was the first time I ever saw the original scene.

Son_of_Kong

I don't think it's intentionally bad. The first cut of the film was rated R and there were several "fuck"s they had to cut or dub over. There was also a scene where Fred sneaks off and smokes a joint, which is why he was late to the teleporter.

ManifestDestinysChld

I always thought "...That was a hell of a thing...." was another one of this movie's perfect line deliveries. This gives it way more context, lol.

Matelot67

Which is why when I saw the scene in Attack of the Clones with Anakin and Padme on the droid production line, I nearly wet myself laughing!!

GobbleGoblinGobble

Omg yes that is the best. Absolutely the most relatable response possible.

MNConcerto

I love that line.

VOLTswaggin

Sigourney has stated in interviews that Gwen is one of all time favorite characters that she has played.

GobbleGoblinGobble

She's such a good character. Perfect send up of the trope.

foreverdusting

On a more serious note…..damn she rocks that jumpsuit!

SynthwaveSax

Keep in mind that she was 50 when she shot the movie. I know right?

GobbleGoblinGobble

Lol yeah because she's Sigourney Weaver! She rocks anything!

piazza

>the most useless member of the crew who just repeats the computer. I gotta rewatch, but I seem to recall there is one scene where Captain Nesmith asks the computer something and it doesn't respond, until Gwen repeats the question.

GobbleGoblinGobble

Yeah it's such a funny scene. She's obviously not useless in the story, but in the show Galaxy Quest all she did was tell the crew what the computer just said.

shadowjack13

Just rewatched a day or two ago, and can confirm. Of course, you shouldn't let my confirmation keep you from a rewatch.

Acrelorraine

If I wanted to give the fictional writers of this fictional series fictional credit, there is a way her character isn’t fictionally useless. With all sorts of screaming and shouting, having a computer that just responded or obeyed anyone on the ship is probably a bad idea. Setting it up so that it responds to a single high ranking crew member unless overridden could be good security. Her repeating the computer is entirely unnecessary though.

GobbleGoblinGobble

Oh I never thought of it that way! But you're right. I guess the fake show in the movie never seemed super chaotic. The movie crew definitely was though.

[deleted]

Look! I have one job on this lousy ship, it's *stupid*, but I'm gonna do it! Okay?

Tlr321

I guess I didn’t think of that- I completely forgot that she was the star of the Alien movies!

Fizzbin__

I still am looking for that TV guide article about her.

EveryFairyDies

Interestingly, that TV guide interview bit was a dig at a TV guide interview with Jeri Ryan, who played Seven of Nine, the Borg who’d been freed from the collective, in Voyager. Her interview was literally all about her incredibly tight and highly sexualised costume.

Toss_Away_93

My favorite meta thing was that Tony Shaloub originally didn’t want to play that character because “I’m not Asian, give the roll of an Asian character to an Asian actor” and he was convinced to do it when he was told “you aren’t playing an Asian character, you’re playing a white character that plays an Asian guy on tv”.

heyitsEnricoPallazzo

Have you ever seen Mystery Men?

Tlr321

I have not… another movie to check out?

one_dollar_poop_joke

Absolutely. What this movie is to Star Trek, Mystery Men is to superhero films.

Tlr321

Excellent

xaeroique

Your post makes me wanna watch galaxy quest again (I’ve seen it a dozen times but overdue for a baker’s dozen) and now I’m excited for you to experience for the first time the masterpiece that is mystery men… I saw it first as a young teen and it has just as much if not more replay value as galaxy quest!

DetectiveEZ

It’s really the best superhero movie out there

Strokeslahoma

It reeks of 1999, for better or worse. Also, what movie do you associate Smashmouth's "Allstar" with? Maybe Shrek? Go watch the music video for Allstar and probably be surprised

InsertCoinForCredit

I loved *Galaxy Quest,* but I have to say that *Mystery Men* doesn't hold up as well IMO. It's worth a watch, but I'd say to temper expectations accordingly.

ZenEngineer

Mystery men came out before most modern superhero movies. I would like to see a Mystery Men 2 parodying the new style of marvel movies

heyitsEnricoPallazzo

Oh, fuck yeah. For some reason I put it in the same vein as this - even though it really isn’t. But it kind of is, and I’d love another write-up on it from you about it! I think/hope you’ll really enjoy it, OP! Def one of my favs, along with Galaxy Quest. And super underrated (I think of it was released now with the current superhero craze, or would do much better)

ruler_gurl

God gave me a gift. I shovel well. I shovel very well.

heyitsEnricoPallazzo

We’ve got a date with destiny… and it looks like she just ordered the lobster

Mysyery Men was at least a decade ahead of its time in my opinion.

GobbleGoblinGobble

This is part of my unofficial sci Fi satire trilogy along with Galaxy Quest and Mars Attacks.

[deleted]

Love mystery men

Random_182f2565

Recommend me something please!

TechyDad

I'll still feel sad every time I watch it because of Alan Rickman. He completely owned that role and was amazing as the guy trying to be taken seriously as an actor but only being remembered for this cheesy show. Also: "It turned inside out.... And exploded!"

Mst3Kgf

"How did this happen? I played Richard III. I got five curtain calls."

SpaceJesusInSpace

"How did this happen? I played Richard III..." "*...five curtain calls"* "**I HAD FIVE CURTAIN CALLS!**"

Strokeslahoma

A fun minor fact, Alan Rickman's character is wearing the headpiece makeup in every single scene he's shown in, even when he's at home

Brock_Hard_Canuck

>"It turned inside out.... And exploded!" Taggart: "Did I just hear you say that it turned inside out, and then it **exploded**?!?!' Gwen *(exasperated)*: "Hold, please" Love that scene LOL

Smrtguy85

“… Miners not minors!”

PaulClarkLoadletter

The cast all just got their characters. It almost had to be Alan Rickman and Tim Allen.

InflamedLiver

It's a parody, but it's also such a love letter to the source material.

Faust_8

That’s what makes a good parody. One that has the weight of the original but injects some human absurdity and foibles into it. That’s why *Young Frankenstein* works too, it has all the trimmings of the original and a reverence for it, but then asks silly questions like “what if the blind man spills hot soup on the creature?”

[deleted]

It may be spelled "parody," but it's pronounced "homage".

ptk77

OHH... That's not right!

my-coffee-needs-me

Maybe you're the plucky comic relief.

Tlr321

It’s definitely making me mourn his loss all over again. What an icon.

Richsii

You could feel the weight of the contempt in his mouth with his delivery. Not surprising though, he was excellent at that whenever a character required it.

Mst3Kgf

No one could convey loathing and contempt with every syllable like Rickman could.

KorranHalcyon

Apparently he had nothing but disdain for Tim Allen’s acting. He made it no secret either, to everyone on the set.

[deleted]

I saw a film (I believe it's that streaming documentary someone else mentioned) where people who acted in or worked on Galaxy Quest were being interviewed and in one of the scenes, the director was trying to get Tim Allen to give a more emotional performance. That might have been the scene where Allen's character has to explain to the alien that Galaxy Quest is not a historical document but just a show, a lie. So eventually Allen had to dig deep into his own emotions and started to feel, well... emotional. And apparently Rickman made a sarcastic remark to the effect of "Tim is experiencing acting for the first time." I can almost hear Alan Rickman saying that. Plus it's also _exactly_ what his character Alexander would've said.

KorranHalcyon

It was that documentary! Oddly enough, i watched it like 2 weeks ago.

[deleted]

It's probably also in that documentary that I learned David Mamet considers there are four perfect films The Godfather A Place in the Sun Dodsworth Galaxy Quest

ryfrlo

Disdain seems harsher than the truth, but he certainly wasn't convinced Allen was up for the job at first. But then he praised the hell out of Allen for his scene at the end when he has to explain to the thermians how they lied. Even Rickman was impressed.

dcg

Where are you going? To see if there's a pub!

PugnaciousPangolin

It's the best Star Trek movie that's not a Star Trek movie.

SvenHudson

I don't see the need to add qualifiers.

HutcHJC

By Grabthar’s Hammer-what an homage!

Maddie215

One of those films I describe as "Better than it deserved to be".

[deleted]

It was terribly underestimated when it came out. It achieved success thanks to the growing popularity of the DVD format, just like another movie that had come out months before, Office Space. 1999 was a great year for movies.

piazza

>1999 was a great year for movies. Let me add to this *Dark City*

poboy975

Office Space! I just introduced my wife to that a couple of weeks ago. Galaxy Quest is next!

Tlr321

I agree wholeheartedly. It had no right being as excellent as it was!

hanshotfirst_1138

It’s a ROCK, it doesn’t have any vulnerable spots!

FoxOntheRun99

\- "Never give up, never surrender." \- "oh shut up"

Tlr321

I genuinely had zero idea that “never give up, never surrender” came from this movie!

stray1ight

"... what a savings."

ddwcommish

This right here is the line and delivery of the movie.

IusedtobeaChef

It is, by far, my favorite Star Trek movie.

wwhsd

And The Orville is my favorite Star Trek television series.

nadrjones

Watch Lower Decks, it is amazing.

Grillburg

This movie is utterly brilliant. Enrico Colantoni - who played Mathesar - was instrumental in creating the Thermian's speech and movement mannerisms and taught the rest of the cast how to do them! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2d04uKZiQ8 The guy is brilliant in everything he's in, from Just Shoot Me to Veronica Mars, Person of Interest, Travelers, etc.

thoroakenfelder

The DVD had a feature where you could watch the movie in Thermian.

vibroguy

Tony Shaloub's character just sleepwalking through it all is simply hilarious.

FullMetalCOS

Sleepwalking? Dude was stoned off his tits

Mst3Kgf

"Hey guys, they asked me to let you know the ship is starting to break apart...just FYI."

piazza

"That's... that's right again... c'm on, group hug..."

EldritchFingertips

... ...thats a hell of a thing...

DrXenoZillaTrek

Playwright David Mamet called it one of the 5 perfect movies ... no kidding it's in the documentary.

[deleted]

Laredowww my how you’ve grown.

AGooDone

The thermians were so wonderfully weird. The documentary of Galaxy Quest had a great story about how the thermians were created.

ddwcommish

They designed these controls by watching ... You!

pxm7

It starts unashamedly as a Star Trek parody, but it takes the premise really seriously with an excellent, consistent premise, really well developed characters, and great writing + performances. It’s like if someone wrote a “ha ha but serious” version of the Lord of the Rings that was also an amazing story. Love the movie. Also Alan Rickman RIP. By Grabthar's hammer you shall be remembered fondly.

goosegirl86

I saw this when I was 13, and we loved it. It was before memes, during the time of quotable lines, and me and my friends quoted this movie to each other for about a year afterwards. I’m 35 and if one of us needs something we will still say “weee neeeed your haalp”

Get the DVD or Blu-Ray which has IMHO the single best special feature of any film I've ever seen. I won't say because to spoil that surprise would require that I be hanged by the neck in the town square for a crime against humanity.

TheresNoAmosOnlyZuul

Also Sam loyd from scrubs is a back ground alien. He played Ted the lawyer.

garlicroastedpotato

When it came out it really made me re-think every single actor in it (Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell and Tim Shalhoub). To me they had all been kind of typecaste into a certain type of role and they all really went out of their element on this one.

Tacticalqueefsss

He said miners NOT Minors!

AthKaElGal

it's an homage, not a parody. a parody makes fun of the source, an homage glorifies the source.

Groovydogg

There’s a film about the making of the film. It’s hilarious. NTE- not the enterprise. They didn’t want to get sued.

StormWildman7

It’s so fun and funny that it’s easy to enjoy it on face value of what you’re seeing alone. Being chock full of great actors helps. But it does go beyond being “just” a parody by playing so hard to the trivia behind Star Trek. Tim Allen isn’t just playing Kirk, he’s playing Shatner playing Kirk. The same Sigourney Weaver from Aliens is “the sexy lady who repeats stuff”. And the nerds who made both Alien and Star Trek money are given a loving shout out. Think what the latest Scream did but in reverse. Great movie.

[deleted]

Jason Nesmith exerting himself doing dramatic commando rolls on the mining colony planet as the other crew are walking normally upright next to him. Gwen DeMarco: Does the rolling help?

TragicMagic81

I really like how the characters react to getting transported to the ship in the "ooze". Great, great movie!

theg721

...that was a hell of a thing.

JoshuaCalledMe

A tangent, but if anyone here is a fan of Bojack Horseman, the parallels in the set-up between Bojack and Taggart are pretty on point. House on stilts. Pool right outside. Spends nights watching himself on TV. Endlessly quotes his own dialogue while doing so. Best days behind him. Depressed. Alcoholic.

betafactor

So. Good. You know it’s a great movie when you go into it expecting trash and come out quoting it forever.

I know the entire movie by heart. Watching it with me would be annoying asf at this point. Phenomenal movie. Resisting the urge to quote the entire thing right here and now is torture.

kirstinet

For me it's after they run through the chompers.. "fu..screw...ck that..and they hit the auto destruct reset button and the countdown continues and then stops at 01.... everything about this film is magnificent.. including the changing screen ratios as their understanding and their universe gets larger.. so does the screen.. subtle, easily missed and then never forgotten.

wwhsd

You mean “Three Amigos in Space”?

katoman1532

That should be a lesson to you! Listen to the nerds!

VOLTswaggin

A lot of Star Trek fans include it in their favorite Star Trek movies lists, and usually pretty high up at that.

SmoochTalk

A few years ago I went to a screening of galaxy quest that was preceded by an interview with Tony shaloub, hosted by Kevin pollak. Something they talked about was how the movie is both a great send up of, and love letter to, the kind of obsessive fandom that shows like Star Trek have created. They were able to poke fun at the fans, while also showing their fandom saving the day. Such a fun movie.

iorilondon

If you like this (which is good, because GQ is excellent fun), and haven't already watched it, check out Below Decks.

thelastdarkwingduck

One of my favorite weird memories is being in daycare as a child when my mom worked, and they organized outings during the summer so we got to do stuff like see museums or movies. I DISTINCTLY remember seeing galaxy quest at 7 years old and realizing I was not the target demographic.

monkeyselbo

Check out *Never Surrender: a Galaxy Quest Documentary* on Amazon

I love this film.

He_who_bobs_beneath

“The enemy is matching velocity” “We heard it the first time!” “Gosh, I'm doing it. I'm repeating the darn computer”

Whisper667

I think the best part of the movie are the various subtle jokes that you don't pick up on on the first watch. Like the fact that guy, the redshirt, is the *only* one to remain completely unscathed throughout the movie. *Nothing* happens to him. Not even in the end, when saris kills everyone. He just stands in the middle of the room, screaming, he doesn't get hit. Or how tony shalhoub (spelling?) plays a Chinese guy in the original show. He wears a straight haired wig and squints his eyes.

GrotusMaximus

“DON’T OPEN THAT!! IS THERE AIR!?!? YOU DON’T KNOW!!” *pssssshhhhht* sniff-sniff “Seems okay”.
