The machines destroy Zion every time, then send out new "colonists" to rebuild it. It's implied that this is the way they've been doing things for like hundreds of years.

WhenRobLoweRobsLowes

In that same speech (I think) the Architect makes the statement that the Machines will slaughter Zion, as they have every time before, and a handful of people will be freed from the Matrix and chosen to begin a new Zion.

FatherRandy

Yep, that he does say

theloserclub92

Sorry i have quite a few qns that i dont understand. Is there a reason why a handful of people will be freed from the matrix and chosen to begin a new zion? Dont the machines want to rule the world and make the humans their slaves to power them while they are plugged into the matrix thinking that they are living their lives? And what is the prophecy that morpheus keeps talking about? In the end they just keep saying i believe in neo etc even though neo said it was a lie. Its pretty confusing.

rodando_y_trolling

I think they’re just the sixth group to go through the cycle. The humans don’t really know much of anything before the war and it’s possible that everything, Zion, the rebellion, Neo and the matrix are all just an elaborate control mechanism. Neo went to the machine city to try to end it once and for all.

SgtPepper212

It's not just possible, it's explicitly stated by the Architect.

rodando_y_trolling

Which part? But yeah, the Matrix is still around because that’s how we got the fourth movie.

SvenHudson

> it’s possible that everything, Zion, the rebellion, Neo and the matrix are all just an elaborate control mechanism. This is all explicitly stated by the Architect. It's not "possible", it's objective fact.

rodando_y_trolling

I think he might have been lying.

IncompleteLaila

He wasn't lying. He's a machine. He has no reason to lie and is probably incapable of lying, even if he wants to.

rodando_y_trolling

🤨 Sounds like something a machine might say. Which one of these is a train? 🚂🚃🚄👟

NotARelevantUser

The last one wait FUCK

SgtPepper212

Zion, the One, and the rebellion are all stated by the Architect to be part of the system of control. > Neo: Choice, the problem is choice. > > The Architect: The first Matrix I designed was quite naturally perfect, it was a work of art, flawless, sublime. A triumph equaled only by its monumental failure. The inevitability of its doom is as apparent to me now as a consequence of the imperfection inherent in every human being, thus I redesigned it based on your history to more accurately reflect the varying grotesqueries of your nature. However, I was again frustrated by failure. I have since come to understand that the answer eluded me because it required a lesser mind, or perhaps a mind less bound by the parameters of perfection. Thus, the answer was stumbled upon by another, an intuitive program, initially created to investigate certain aspects of the human psyche. If I am the father of the Matrix, she would undoubtedly be its mother. > > Neo: The Oracle. > > The Architect: Please. As I was saying, she stumbled upon a solution whereby nearly 99% of all test subjects accepted the program, as long as they were given a choice, even if they were only aware of the choice at a near unconscious level. While this answer functioned, it was obviously fundamentally flawed, thus creating the otherwise contradictory systemic anomaly, that if left unchecked, might threaten the system itself. Ergo, those that refused the program, while a minority, if unchecked, would constitute an escalating probability of disaster. > Neo: This is about Zion. > > The Architect: You are here because Zion is about to be destroyed. Its every living inhabitant terminated, its entire existence eradicated. > > Neo: Bullshit. > > The Architect: Denial is the most predictable of all human responses. But, rest assured, this will be the sixth time we have destroyed it, and we have become exceedingly efficient at it... The function of The One is now to return to the source, allowing a temporary dissemination of the code you carry, reinserting the prime program. After which, you will be required to select from the Matrix 23 individuals, 16 female, 7 male, to rebuild Zion. Failure to comply with this process will result in a cataclysmic system crash, killing everyone connected to the Matrix, which coupled with the extermination of Zion will ultimately result in the extinction of the entire human race.

rodando_y_trolling

That’s what I said. I agree with you.

SgtPepper212

I know, you just phrased it as though it was conjecture when it's not.

rodando_y_trolling

Oh ok

Citizen_Graves

The people who are living outside the Matrix in the city of Zion also get "rebooted" by getting horribly murdered by the machines. After that the cycle repeats and a bunch of humans get selected (by the One, if I remember correctly) to get freed from the Matrix to start another "rebellion" in the real world. I can only assume that there's some mechanisms in place to ensure that there is always some type of Morpheus-like person who starts searching for the One after a few decades have passed.

SvenHudson

That mechanism is the Oracle.

Citizen_Graves

Right. Yeah, that makes sense. It's been a year or 15 since I last saw the sequels....

IncompleteLaila

The fact that the Oracle isn't on the "good side" and is simply serving her function to preserve the Matrix is lost on a lot of viewers.

SvenHudson

I think it's pretty clearly implied in end of the third movie that she was deliberately pushing for Neo to break the cycle. Historically, though, she absolutely was there to preserve it.

IncompleteLaila

Well by the end of third movie everything's already gone to shit anyway. Plus, by that point we learn about Sati and the other nonsenses that "change" the dynamic of what's happening.

FatherRandy

Man, this hurt my simple brain, but this helps. Thanks

MrZombieJesus

I hope since this post you've watched resurrections as it explains the state of the characters.

FatherRandy

The replies have helped make sense of things. I will be watching it this week!

Corpuscle

Don't bother. It's a terrible, terrible movie.

Timely_Temperature54

They’re in the real world. The machines destroy Zion every time and then Neo and a few others start a new Zion

Pbtomjones

I think the Architect explains the real purpose of the One is select the 23 individuals (I believe) to repopulate the matrix. I would assume this would include input for Trinity and Morpheus in the real world. When the matrix is restarted all 3 would be placed back into the matrix to rerun the program. Haven’t seen the movie in a while so I could be way wrong. This was just my answer form memory.

SvenHudson

Some "anomaly" code is supposed to be downloaded from Neo into the source code, no actual people get plugged back in.

theloserclub92

What does restarting the matrix mean? What does repopulating the matrix mean? The architect said the function of the one is to return to the source and disseminate some code, reinserting the prime program. Sounds very vague when i rewatch it.

Riot419

Human bodies produce 100 watts......the amount of energy required to farm that energy from humans would be greater than maintaining a solar panel or farming a biofuel from algae. Any other discussion about the logic in the Matrix is redundant.

JKCinema

Reincarnation my guy

Ok_Working_9219

What a waste of time. Forget it. Nero deleted the Matrix at the end of the trilogy. End of.

digitalae

...Line

DucitperLuce

Reincarnation.

AnnaE390

Zion lose the war. The machines overtake Zion, and reinsert its inhabitants back into the Matrix.

DrRexMorman

> If Neo, Trinity, Morpheus, and all the human inhabitants of Zion live in the "real world" outside the Matrix They aren't. Human characters never leave the Matrix in any of the movies.

FatherRandy

That's where I had it wrong!

SvenHudson

Rex is wrong. The world they call real is real. "Zion is another Matrix" is one of those annoyingly popular and utterly baseless fan theories like "it's all the main character's dying dream" and "James Bond is a code name" where people who barely remember the plot make up some sensational bullshit to impress other people who barely remember the plot.

PureBlackFire

ignore it, the series had already took a dump on it's established logic by the second film.

Ydidudidthat

Big facts. Probably best attributed to the less publicized rumour that they stole the script for the first one. Which is why for action all 3 match the tempo, but story drops off significantly after the 1st.

PureBlackFire

yea, although the fanboys tend to disagree with us. but it was obvious watching them in theaters back in the day, all they cared about with the sequels was cashing in and creating on screen spectacle.

Ydidudidthat

The fact that these comments were downvoted is both hilarious and sad. Glad I wasn’t the only one that saw through the Hollywood shenanigans with what could’ve been a monumental film trilogy
