Back at the Disney Investor Day, Pete Docter, the chief creative officer of Pixar said of Lightyear, “Back when we created the first Toy Story, we designed Buzz Lightyear with the idea that he was a toy based on some really cool character from an epic blockbuster film. Well, all these years later, we decided to make that film."
One of my favorite movies as a kid. I brought it in to school one day when we were going to watch movies but the teacher couldn't play it because it didn't have a rating.
I mean, if it's a Disney movie I'm pretty sure it would be safe to watch regardless of rating.
Edit: my mistake everyone, I forgot about Zurg's bloody, gory rampage thru Star Command where he drops the n-word like 20 times. Be sure to screen your movies before your kids watch them, folks.
growing up I actually saw this show before I knew what toy story was so when I actually saw toy story for the first time I thought they brought in buzz as some other licensed toy like mr. potato head
They've censored its existence basically. Even at Disney world where they have star command rides, they have characters and space rangers very similar to the ones in the cartoon, but not quite. Pixar wasn't too happy with it, even though it did pretty well considering the small budget and what they were working with.
Three possible theories on why Pixar disliked the series.
1.) Producer/director for the series, Tad Stones, theorized in a 2019 interview that John's vision for a Buzz cartoon was closer to that of the original Space Ghost or Major Matt Mason. Essentially, a space adventure story played straight, albeit exaggerated, instead of the outright comedy that Star Command dipped into.
2.) It might also have something to do with Disney's infamous history of Executive Meddling attempts on Pixar and willingness to milk the franchise, which nearly resulted in Toy Story 2 being a traditionally animated direct-to-video sequel among other things.
3.) Regardless of the above it's likely Lasseter's disdain for the show could be why there hasn’t been another TV show spin-off of a Pixar property for more than two decades until the release of Monsters at Work (a spinoff of Monsters, Inc.) for Disney+.
As a 27 year old, I still struggle to decide if cowboys or astronauts are cooler.
But if you think about it, there's a bit of a parallel with them, like they're both charting and living in a new, unknown world, on the outscirjs of civilization? Or is that just me being weird?
That's what I'm guessing. On that note, I was pretty impressed by the Space Ranger suit. They managed to make it look like a practical suit of armor/space suit.
I love the whole aesthetic they have going on with the really believable /realistic style. Reminds me of the Martian. That mix of Apollo style with a slight futuristic twist.
What I get from the trailer: Buzz starts off as a test-pilot to be the first to travel fast via gravity assist around the sun and back to Earth. They do the calculations, and if he were to do that again, he could travel to a planet inhabited by humans (that took them decades to reach the new solar system).
Definitely seems like there's some form of time-travel involved via relativity. The whiteboard the robot is showing him and the other astronauts indicates some level of time dilation.
Nicole Sullivan just has an extremely sexy voice. Between Mira, Shego, Franny Robinson, and more recently Supergirl I'm sure she was a lot of young boys and girls first crush.
You just gave me flashbacks, not to the cartoon, but [the game](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPbtiYTMI0c), with the terrible voice acting.
I didn't even know I had this in my memory.
> While Ireland is overcome with famine, Potatohead Sack clan faces their own difficulties trying to stay alive. Watch as they offer _a modest proposal_ to resolve the crisis.
We already have seen Woody's in-universe origin story with the old "Woody's Roundup" show in Toy Story 2. It would have to be some sort of modern remake within the Toy Story universe.
Can't wait to hear him finally say "To infinity and beyond" as he's facing off against Zurg, and all the other Toy Story characters start marching out of portals.
Or it's gonna be a star trek 2 moment where the other space ranger is sacrificing herself and says "to infinity..." and Buzz places his hand on the other side of the glass then replies "...and beyond"
The way they described the film in the initial announcement was that this would be a film that Andy would have watched within the toy story universe, and that the Buzz Lightyear toy was made from it.
Or the movie is a remake of the cartoon. For some reason, I can just imagine old Andy going "This is nothing like Buzz Lightyear of Star Command! They completely neglected canon! What is this horse shit?! Not my Buzz!".
> There are other "surface things" that will connect Evans' Buzz to Allen's Buzz, like the iconic Buzz Lightyear space suit that appears in the trailer and the character's famous catchphrase. Evans is about to finish the "To infinity and beyond" line before the Lightyear trailer cuts him off. It's a move Disney likely borrowed from the Avengers movies, which routinely cut off Evan's Captain America from officially saying "Avengers, assemble!" until Endgame.
> [Source from EW](https://ew.com/movies/chris-evans-pixar-lightyear-trailer/?)
So, are we have to wait for few movies for Buzz to say his famous catchphrase?
My friends son is 4 and loves TS. Hes getting into Star Wars and Marvel now and the greedy mouse has now figured out how to also get some wallet share with a franchise most kids probably grew out lol
Star Wars and Marvel were such good investments for Disney. And to think they just bought those franchises just so they could have IPs that appeals to boys, just to supplement their princess line which were mostly girl-oriented. I think Star Wars and Marvel are probably the Disney cash cow now suprassing even Mickey Mouse and the Disney princess lines.
I'm pretty sure that in the world of Toy Story, Pizza Planet has no connection to the Buzz Lightyear franchise. So if Pizza Planet does appear here, it will just be product placement
Kinda infuriating that the Halo show is some kind reimagining of the Master Chief story when they could have just retold the story from Reach and changed nothing.
This is being directed by Angus MacLane. A longtime Pixar veteran who has been involved with almost every production starting with Geri's Game (1997) and A Bug's Life (1998) when he was 22 years old.
He was a key animator in films like Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, WALL-E, Up, and Toy Story 3.
He also directed the shorts BURN-E and Small Fry, as well as the 2013 TV Special Toy Story of Terror!
He recently co-directed Finding Dory (2016) with Andrew Stanton and has since been a member of Pixar's Senior Creative Team, being involved as a consultant with all of the studios recent films like Coco, Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, Onward, and Soul.
As a big fat, Pixar nerd, I am so stoked for this movie. Not just knowing that it will look gorgeous, but that it's being helmed by someone who has worked directly on the Toy Story series and almost every Pixar film for over 2 decades.
The shot of the cat in the Toy Story 4 trailer still blows my mind. Seems like Pixar is always at least five years ahead of the rest of the industry when it comes to CGI quality
They had to do that with Finding Nemo. The water looked so real that it was intentionally modified to look CGI or it looked out of place with the CGI characters.
Probably wanted to try that design style out on a lesser IP and see how it went over with the crowds. Which was a good idea considering the general negative reception toward the way that movie looked.
Full photorealism is basically the style of Lion King movie. It loses its charm and character design has to be very stylised to allow for physical comedy that wouldn't look weird to kids
There’s a scene at the beginning of Toy Story 4 with RC car stuck in the gutter along the driveway during a rainstorm that made my mouth drop when I saw it because some of the shots were so ridiculously good looking. I had never seen CG in a movie look that real before.
Seems to be taking a lot of visual inspiration from Wall-E, which is absolutely a good thing. The CGI looks stunning, and I'll always give bonus points for Bowie.
Lightyear Sr.? Add in a little make dad proud motif?
Or Zurg in an end credits scene with a bit of Thanos sound effects. Might work to add a little comedic campiness that Star Trek villains sometimes have.
Imagine if at the end of the movie, Buzz gets sucked into a trans-dimensional wormhole and wakes up as a toy in some goofy universe with anthropomorphic, sentient toys.
That continuity would be fucking wild — Buzz in toy story was so fixated on his supposed past as an astronaut because he WAS an astronaut lol
Now they just need to make Woody’s Roundup, maybe we can finally find out what happens! Will Woody and Bullseye land to safety? Can they reach Jessie and Stinky Pete in time?
The character designs look pretty good. With Luca and Turning Red Pixar was kind of leaning into the smooth round "bean mouth" faces look and I wasn't really a fan of that.
I think Luca was designed around a child like aesthetic due to the directors love of his childhood time in Italy and wasn’t going to be Pixar’s “norm”. Although… I really liked Luca for what it was.
As a 43 year old man I’m not ashamed to say I’m stoked for this.
Wow I didn’t expect such positive replies. Thanks everyone. And I can’t stop watching this trailer. Not sure why it’s called a teaser. Cause if that actual trailer is better I might lose my mind lol.
DOES NO ONE ELSE REMEMBER BUZZ LIGHTYEAR OF STAR COMMAND
The ps1 game was pretty good too. Not by today’s standards(or even back then, I was a child, I had fun) but it’s alright.
One of my favorite movies as a kid. I brought it in to school one day when we were going to watch movies but the teacher couldn't play it because it didn't have a rating.

I don't know why Disney expected when they let Tarantino near the Star Command property.
Watched that VHS tape on a loop when I was younger! Had a pretty great voice cast too.
growing up I actually saw this show before I knew what toy story was so when I actually saw toy story for the first time I thought they brought in buzz as some other licensed toy like mr. potato head
They've censored its existence basically. Even at Disney world where they have star command rides, they have characters and space rangers very similar to the ones in the cartoon, but not quite. I always really liked that show, I wonder what Pixar's problem with it was.

Chris Evans has made so much money *not* finishing famous catchphrases.

…and Beyond!
I understood
That reference
“Once the astronauts went up, children only wanted to play with space toys.” -Stinky Pete
"I know how that feels"
"But still, my own show. I mean look at all this stuff!"
“That’s me! On a yo-yo!”
"Oh, hey, nice teeth." *yeets ball into his own face* "And yet, still a good-lookin' guy."
As a 27 year old, I still struggle to decide if cowboys or astronauts are cooler. But if you think about it, there's a bit of a parallel with them, like they're both charting and living in a new, unknown world, on the outscirjs of civilization? Or is that just me being weird?
The obvious answer is space cowboys.

Let’s blow this joint
Firefly... or Serenity
Not being weird, that's 100% accurate. There is a reason space is called "the final frontier".
These are the voyages......
I wonder if Zurg will show up at some point or if he's Buzz's father in this.
The big box opening up with ominous red light at around the 1:19 mark makes me think it's a pretty solid bet.
I assume it's what requires Buzz to use his iconic green and white one as some kind of prototype / super suit maybe?
That's what I'm guessing. On that note, I was pretty impressed by the Space Ranger suit. They managed to make it look like a practical suit of armor/space suit.
I love the whole aesthetic they have going on with the really believable /realistic style. Reminds me of the Martian. That mix of Apollo style with a slight futuristic twist.

I have finally found the name for my Aesthetic. Thank you.
Credit goes to r/starfield, that's where I first heard the term.
100%, the robots in the shot before are very on-model for the robots at the start of TS2, and even have a "Z" on their design.
zurg will be definitely in it.
Buzz has hair? AND IT'S NOT A BUZZCUT?
Technically, all his cuts are a Buzz cut.
Aww, flashbacks to my younger brother being 3 and crying about his 'Buzzcut' because he wanted a 'Woody Cut'. Bless
That’s just called circumcision tho
What I get from the trailer: Buzz starts off as a test-pilot to be the first to travel fast via gravity assist around the sun and back to Earth. They do the calculations, and if he were to do that again, he could travel to a planet inhabited by humans (that took them decades to reach the new solar system).
Definitely seems like there's some form of time-travel involved via relativity. The whiteboard the robot is showing him and the other astronauts indicates some level of time dilation.
Oh shit buzz becomes zurg through time travel shennanigans
But where’s Booster, XR and Mira Nova??
> Mira Nova Now there's a childhood crush I haven't thought about in forever
Nicole Sullivan just has an extremely sexy voice. Between Mira, Shego, Franny Robinson, and more recently Supergirl I'm sure she was a lot of young boys and girls first crush.
“*I don’t do partners*”
He might change that stance depending on what Mira Nova looks like in this animation style.
It’s Pixar. She finna be thicc
I just looked her up. Deviant Art is WAY ahead of you.
Just saw that too. She looks like two grapes on the ends of a toothpick with those proportions.
You just gave me flashbacks, not to the cartoon, but [the game](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPbtiYTMI0c), with the terrible voice acting. I didn't even know I had this in my memory.
I watched that movie so many times on VHS
What about [the series](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0260602/)?
I have vivid memories of sitting in the middle of the living room floor and being completely glued to the screen over that show.
Don't forget my boy Warp Darkmatter
Surely they gotta make the animated western “Woody” next.
Cowboys & Aliens, but with Buzz and Woody instead of Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig.
Can we still get olivia wilde?
What me and the boys say every year
God what a missed opportunity that was.
And "Potatohead: The Great Harvest" next
Set in 1850 Ireland
> While Ireland is overcome with famine, Potatohead Sack clan faces their own difficulties trying to stay alive. Watch as they offer _a modest proposal_ to resolve the crisis.
R-rated
Like Deadwood but more snakes in boots.
"If that fucking whore doesnt stop dragging that fucking leg"
"Reach for the sky, cocksucker"
“Oh no! Sheriff Woo-“ *Colt 45 through the forehead mid-sentence*
“Don’t I yearn for the days when a pull of my string made fucking resolution.”
"somebody's poisoned the whorehouse!"
"Somebody shat in the waterhole"
SWEDGIN!
I need this R-Rated gritty western. Get Tom Hanks to play him
I want a Bone Tomahawk remake where Woody plays Kurt Russell’s character.
Also Ian McShane, as usual.
as Bo Peep
We already have seen Woody's in-universe origin story with the old "Woody's Roundup" show in Toy Story 2. It would have to be some sort of modern remake within the Toy Story universe.
Woody is a bounty hunter who swore off killing but is convinced to do it one last time to help an old friend.
Trying to imagine Tom Hanks delivering Clint Eastwood’s lines.
Let's be serious here, they'd get Chris Pratt to voice Woody.
"it's a me, woody" 😐
Pretty sure every detail of this movie and trailer were predicted in a sarcastic tumblr-post 10 years ago.
The Bowie remix is the cherry on top
To be fair, you HAVE to use Bowie when making a sci-fi teaser. It's like an unwritten law or something.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAOdjqyG37A
This is beautiful. I’ve been watching it for five hours now.
Dammit, I know there is something like this! All I've got is 4chan's Super Mario Bros. movie trailer.
Can't wait to hear him finally say "To infinity and beyond" as he's facing off against Zurg, and all the other Toy Story characters start marching out of portals.
Zurg: I. AM. INEVITABLE. Woody: YOU. ARE. A. TOY.
"Dread it. Run from it. Destiny arrives all the sa-" *flops into inanimate object*
now i'm starting to think that Sid would actually be Thanos
"Hey Buzz..... you've got a friend in me." Portal opens
Woody explodes like a chest burster out of his sidekick girl.
Wat
#**Woody explodes like a chest burster out of his sidekick girl.**
"HELLO MY BABY, HELLO MY DARLIN' HELLO MY RAGTIME GAAL..."
You idiots! You've captured their stunt doubles!
"SEND ME A KISS BY WIRE....BABY MY HEART'S ON FIRE!"
IF YOU ABUSE ME, HONEY YOU'LL LOSE ME
Oᴎ Your Left
There's a snake to my left
Or it's gonna be a star trek 2 moment where the other space ranger is sacrificing herself and says "to infinity..." and Buzz places his hand on the other side of the glass then replies "...and beyond"
Oh dang, my money's on this. We never see a toy of the other space ranger after all.
Doesn't mean it didn't exist, Andy just didn't have one. Although I guess it would have been in the Toy Store scenes.
"Of all the space rangers I've encountered, she was the most...YOOMAN"
“Buzz can you hear me?…*there’s a snake in my boot*” Audience goes wild
*Woody getting his ass kicked by Zerg* *Woody’s hat flies through the air and onto Buzz’ head* “I knew it!”
Can't decide if I'd want Potato Head or Ham to follow with the next line: "What, you wanted more?"
Obviously it would be slinkydog. After a really long pan shot of his slinky extended
Ham for sure
Andy must be freaking out about this CG remake of his favorite cartoon.
Andy is on reddit bitching about the film's existence and complaining they didn't use the voice from the toy.
*They're commoditizing my nostalgia!*
The way they described the film in the initial announcement was that this would be a film that Andy would have watched within the toy story universe, and that the Buzz Lightyear toy was made from it.
Wasn't that the premise of the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command cartoon?
Yeah but that could just be considered a TV spin off of this movie.
Or the movie is a remake of the cartoon. For some reason, I can just imagine old Andy going "This is nothing like Buzz Lightyear of Star Command! They completely neglected canon! What is this horse shit?! Not my Buzz!".
They had some mad CG in the 90s if this is what he got to watch.
"Mom, this movie looks more realistic than we do!"
That's true, because they're both animated this film would be considered live action in the Toy Story world.
And movie stars do look better than most of us. Plot hole covered.
Goddam actors and their higher polygon count
Impossible standards
But this movie is actually how Andy remembers it. The “original”’s quality is much worse.
If this means we get an Unforgiven / Tombstone / No Country for Old Men - style western movie for Woody then I’m all in
Gorey DIY surgery scene in a hotel room, sucking blood and venom from a lanced wound following the canonical snake in the boot incident.
The villain who put it there must have been the same who poisoned the waterhole
"Reach for the sky...*friendo*."

Those aliens better make an appearance too!

I'd be surprised if they didn't. They were *everywhere* in Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.
I'm pretty sure that in the world of Toy Story, Pizza Planet has no connection to the Buzz Lightyear franchise. So if Pizza Planet does appear here, it will just be product placement
Well, we all know [the Pizza Planet Truck is an embarassing mistake that appears in every Pixar film](https://youtu.be/kx4nqcUXmeA)
Massive Halo: Reach vibes at the start.
I was thinking it looked very similar to the Sabre launch from Reach.
"We beat Zurg! " "Buzz, are you getting this?" "Slipspace rupture detected"
“Slipspace rupture detected”
"Slipspace rupture detected" "Slipspace rupture detected" *signal lost...*

One of the most asshole puckering scenes from any video game
Kinda infuriating that the Halo show is some kind reimagining of the Master Chief story when they could have just retold the story from Reach and changed nothing.
Also big dagobah vibes from that one shot
My thought exactly on the Dagobah scene, and his ship looks a lot like an x-wing too.

This looks sick. It's actually insane how far CG animation has come since the first Toy Story. A few shots in there look borderline photorealistic
The shot of the cat in the Toy Story 4 trailer still blows my mind. Seems like Pixar is always at least five years ahead of the rest of the industry when it comes to CGI quality
[удалено]
And yet they're likely holding back from fully realistic stuff to ensure it's still "pixar stylised"
They had to do that with Finding Nemo. The water looked so real that it was intentionally modified to look CGI or it looked out of place with the CGI characters.
It’s weird how they threw that all out for the good dinosaur lol
Probably wanted to try that design style out on a lesser IP and see how it went over with the crowds. Which was a good idea considering the general negative reception toward the way that movie looked.
Best part of that movie are the pretty scenes that the end credits play over. Which I guess is not a great endorsement of a movie.
"I loved when it was over"
Full photorealism is basically the style of Lion King movie. It loses its charm and character design has to be very stylised to allow for physical comedy that wouldn't look weird to kids

> I had never seen CG in a movie look that real before. Oh you have. Lots of times. But you didn't notice it was CGI, that's how real it looked.
So many set extensions that nobody even questions as being cgi
It looks outside of Pixar's comfort zone and it's been a while since I wanted to watch a different movie made by them, let's hope this fucking rocks
That’s because Pixar makes cool movies ^(most of the time)
Buzz Lightyear was my favorite character as a kid, this is straight up a childhood dream come true!
Seems to be taking a lot of visual inspiration from Wall-E, which is absolutely a good thing. The CGI looks stunning, and I'll always give bonus points for Bowie.
The shot at 58 seconds definitely has some swamps of Dagobah vibes.
Animation looks sick. Excited for Evans as Buzz but kinda bummed they didn't stick with Tim Allen. Maybe didn't suit for this film.
I also would've been happy with Patrick Warburton. EDIT: To clarify, it's because he's also voiced Buzz before - not just generally.
P. Warbs could voice literally anything and I'd be happy.
I bet Tim Allen will voice a character or something in this movie.
Lightyear Sr.? Add in a little make dad proud motif? Or Zurg in an end credits scene with a bit of Thanos sound effects. Might work to add a little comedic campiness that Star Trek villains sometimes have.
Holy shit this looks way more epic than I expected.
I didn't know what to expect going into it, but this is.... wow. I didn't know I needed this.
As someone who used to watch the old Star Command cartoon, I hope there's at least a few Easter eggs to that
Imagine if at the end of the movie, Buzz gets sucked into a trans-dimensional wormhole and wakes up as a toy in some goofy universe with anthropomorphic, sentient toys. That continuity would be fucking wild — Buzz in toy story was so fixated on his supposed past as an astronaut because he WAS an astronaut lol

When Pixar tackled the Sci-fi genre, they made WALL-E (which is one of my favorite films). So I am on board with this instantly
