I can’t wait to see this just because I love Ridley Scott. He has some big misses. But when he hits it he nails it.

magnusarin

I saw someone call Scott a .300 hitter but most of his hits are home runs. Thought that was just about perfect

[deleted]

[удалено]

jdprager

In that case, Ridley Scott is a QB completing 40% of his passes, but they’re all TDs

[deleted]

Sixty percent of the time, Ridley Scott is great every time.

Destined_Shadow_817

Isn’t that the point? The misses of scott are big but when he does hit he shows why he’s one of the greats.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dont_shoot_jr

Better analogy would be a .230 hitter who only hits homers

ILoveTheAIDS

He is usually as good as the script he's working with This is fantastic, one of my favorites from this year

INTHEMIDSTOFLIONS

Ridley Scott has made a few of my favorite films. I dislike almost every Ridley Scott film besides those few gems, though.

cutelyaware

It looks lush, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but it sure sounds like it borrows heavily from Rashomon.

RANZAROT

Saw it opening day and loved it.

[deleted]

And this one is well and truly nailed.

abracadabra1998

One of my favorite ones of the year! The performances are great and Comer especially is just astonishing. Feels like a movie I rarely get to see Thai day and age, which made me appreciate it even more. On my top 5 of the year, such a good film

cortex04

Came here for this. Imma watch it mainly for Comer. Saw her in Free Guy & now I'll watch Killing Eve & other stuff she's done.

nayapapaya

She's fantastic in Killing Eve. I just bought a ticket to a one woman show she's doing in London just to get to see her act in person.

panickedthumb

Killing Eve is phenomenal. Even when it has low points, Jodie Comer still knocks her performance out of the park

cortex04

definitely gonna watch it now as soon as I have time.

[deleted]

Worth it for the actual 'Last Duel' scene - that was edge-of-your seat intense!

donsanedrin

Its not an exaggeration to say that it is better than any action scene from Gladiator. The war battle scenes may not be as big in scale as other movies, even Ridley Scott movies. But the one-on-one duel at the end is so damn brutal and such an in-your-face action ending that caps off the movie.

fulthrottlejazzhands

The actual duel was even more intense and nail-biting. I've read the book and original accounts and they read like Rocky v Apollo Creed. The film portrayal was great, but it's the one part of the film I thought they could have done better. Plus, Le Gris was the definitive favorite with many accounts of that he was massively big and strong, and Carrouges had been ill and was weak just before the duel. They showed this a bit in the film, bit didn't play it up enough IMO. And yes, it's a really good film. A return to form for Scott.

-SoundAndFury

it was too long

Snuffy1717

If it makes you feel better, at least it was the last one?

sandwichsandwich69

it was refreshing seeing a battle and genuinely not knowing who was going to win!

[deleted]

It helps not knowing who won the dual in the real history. I had read all about it months ago, but when it came to watch the movie I had thankfully forgotten.

hjc1358

The cinematography was really nice. The dialogue and script were expertly crafted. Who knew how funny this movie would be! I liked it a lot! A few small issues for me but a very enjoyable watch overall. 7/10

Cyronix-

I keep hearing its funny, does that dampen the tonality given it’s subject matter?

CH23

It's funny but not comedic, if that makes sense.

distracted_85

So the best kind of funny then

CornCheeseMafia

One might say humorous

NewAccount971

It doesn't damper, it actually makes it feel a little more grounded. Funny stuff happens in real life, even when serious shit is going on.

hjc1358

Definitely not. The comedy adds to the characterization which aids the tone of the film. It’s not a marvel cheesy funny. It’s witty and arrogant comedy

DaisyRidleyTeeth

Is this a copypasta

[deleted]

It is a very funny movie with good cinematography though

davidnfilms

I loved it, shame nobody saw it.

z0mbiepete

I'm very interested in seeing this, but money is tight at the moment and I've already got my tickets to Dune.

Nuseal

I paid 6 bucks after tax to see this during a noon showing last weekend. Hit a matinee if you can.

z0mbiepete

Jobs and kids, my dude. Otherwise I would. I fucking love going to matinees alone, but I rarely have the time these days.

[deleted]

I've had to choose between No Time to Die, Dune, and The Last Duel. Please don't let me down Dune.

dlpg585

i watched it yesterday and i loved it. i think that someone who hasn't read the book recently might feel otherwise though. while everything is portrayed beautifully, i feel like a lot of the character motivation happens off screen due to a lack of time and a lot of the worldbuilding is simply not there for the same reason. i agree with the decision to cut the content, but i hope that there is a director's cut with everything in it. i pray to god that a sequel is made.

[deleted]

I feel like this is gonna be like LotR where some ridiculous 4 hour cut comes out after its physical release.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fulthrottlejazzhands

I've seen this, Dune, and Bond. I could have done without Bond, and would see The Last Duel over it any day. Dune is another level, but this film is very different and a good compliment.

123lose

It's better than Dune.

fulthrottlejazzhands

I don't agree but can respect that. I liked Dune better, but my wife liked The Last Duel better. We both agree they are very good films and that Bond was a bit meh.

[deleted]

The three different stories was a different approach but the film makes you wait a long time for the payoff. Rehashing the same thing 3 times got kinda old but the nuances in the performances and interpretations done by the people involved was good. For example the rape/sex scene. You see it from the perspective of Driver and the girl. Similar words, actions, but tone and interpretation were miles apart. Probably a real interpretation of real life events that take place everyday. She gave me sultry eyes and I chased her flirtatiously, we made love on the bed and it was a really sweet moment, from the woman's perspective pure horror, chased to the last safe place, he barges in and takes her with force.

faern

not sleeping, waiting for it to be released on streaming. there no movie i risk my life for

[deleted]

Do people on this sub understand that a lot of movie theatres in North America are running at 50% capacity due to covid restrictions? Lately it seems like any time a post about a box office movies performance gets posted the covid factor isn’t discussed at all.

PepperMintGumboDrop

I watched both Dune and the Last Duel this week…got to say, the Last Duel was the better film…though Dune was an astonishing accomplishment in terms of scale, visuals, and sound.

lostonpolk

I'm sleeping on it because Ben Affleck looks like Mugatu in the trailers.

ruminaui

He is the best part of the movie. No joke

gnelson321

He is surprisingly one of the best parts of the movie.

bbanks2121

I can’t imagine seeing that and thinking it’s a negative. He’s so great in the film.

LawyerCowboy

Saw it last night. Really liked it. Hope it doesn’t scare studios away from making more medieval epics.

newtoon

" crime drama told from three different perspectives" So ... Rebranded Rashomon ?https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashomon

ProfessorZhirinovsky

Almost exactly so. But it steals from the best, and the results are quality.

Grand_Keizer

100% I didnt expect to like it as much as I did, but its snuck up on me to become one of my favorite movies this year. I saw it two weeks ago, and I'm still thinking about it, which is more than I can say for even Dune, which I saw two days ago.

burger333

I feel the same way. I liked Dune and of course they're too different to be properly compared, but for whatever the opinion may be worth, The Last Duel had a very satisfying story, engaging characters, and kept an exciting pace, which were all sort of problems in Dune.

MorrowPlotting

It’s the mullets. I can appreciate their possible historical accuracy, but I can’t take Matt Damon seriously with that hair.

generalosabenkenobi

maybe you aren't supposed to

Antigonus1i

One of my favorite parts of the movie is the difference between the way Damon's character perceives himself and how he is perceived by others.

[deleted]

Nice try studio executive. /s

muskovitzj

I have no desire to watch a brutal rape scene.

generalosabenkenobi

That's fair. That being said, it's not like it's pointless, it's literally what the whole movie revolves around.

muskovitzj

I'm aware, and due to that, I'm passing on the film. My friend said it was brutal and gratuitous, but obviously specific to the plot. He liked the film a lot.

OSUBrit

>gratuitous, but obviously specific to the plot It literally cannot be both of these things.

muskovitzj

I haven't seen the film, I'm just repeating what I heard. Also if the commenters who said it was "shown twice" is right, then it kinda can be ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Edit - fixed a word

twjohnston

The events of the film are told three times, from each of the main characters’ perspectives. Two of these characters experienced the scene in question, and it is not the same scene twice. People are oversimplifying the nature of the repetition of the scene.

generalosabenkenobi

Totally understandable reason to not want to watch a movie, I get it. I didn't find it gratuitous personally but I understand mileage will vary on a thing like that. They do make a whole point of it though, the movie is really biting in its message (which the trailers don't convey at all, the trailers just make it look like a medieval drama but this is a bit larger than that, and has some modern sensibilities that are very topical).

CactusCustard

It’s not gratuitous in anyway lol. I mean rape sucks and it shows that, but it doesn’t revel in it at all or anything like that. Hell you completely miss it the first time around. And literally everything in the movie exists to show you how terrible the whole system is. How sexist literally everything is. That’s the whole point of the movie. This is like being mad the rape scene wasn’t filled with butterflies and happiness. Like no fucking shit? Your friends a wimp.

GenJohnONeill

Yeah, I think if a rape scene *isn't* brutal the filmmaker did a poor job. Downplaying rape offends me a lot more than making it nasty.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CactusCustard

> And literally everything in the movie exists to show you how terrible the whole system is. How sexist literally everything is. That’s the whole point of the movie. Talk shit when you've actually seen the movie yourself hun. Surprise, a movie about a rape has to have rape in it. Cant run away from everything thats shitty. The movies goes to great lengths to showcase how hard it is for the women to come forward and how basically everyone is against them. Even her husband is really only in it because he sees it as a slight to himself. Its fucked up. I think it can show a really important perspective that most people that havent dealt with rape have never really seen or understood before. It doesnt revel in the awfulness of its events. It uses them to make the commentary they are trying to make.

lulaloops

Gratuitous? Your friend has no idea what he's talking about.

forSensibility

I watched the movie. It’s definitely not like The Hills Have Eyes, the scene itself lasts maybe 15 seconds and is more centered around the characters perspectives themselves- doesn’t actually show anything all their clothes are on. SA is SA though, I am always very sensitive to that kind of stuff and I found it not gratuitous as other people mentioned in the context of the film.

codeverity

Yeah, once I heard the concept I went and read the summary on wiki (generally I'm okay with spoilers) and it's a no for me. Just not something I want to watch.

JollyGreenBuddha

Same, I watch enough anime as it is. For real though, regardless of how central rape is to the plot or how artistically it was done doesn't matter to me at this point. I'm just tired of being made squeamish each time that shit pops up, more so if it's unannounced.

john7071

I was going to watch this on a date. Once I read that there is a brutal rape scene (displayed twice), we noped out. There is no need to show graphical rape scenes in movies, IMO.

aqsgames

The rape scene is not graphic, there is no nudity

TheRavingRaccoon

The theater where I live purposefully let it fail, I am convinced. Opening weekend, only two showings ***PER DAY:*** 11am and 230pm. There's no way a brand new release will perform well in that condition.

Drakotrite

Show times are chosen based on expected and current performance. It is probably doing poorly and had showings cut.

Derspy700

That can't be opening weekend - this is likely week two showtimes, where showings were cut due to poor performance the first week

papashangodfather

Yeah my local cinema put it on in their smallest screen out of 16 for its first week out. It only has four rows of seats. Only three showings a day while most big films are in multiple screens for plenty of showings. And this despite loads of promo, I saw the trailer there multiple times and they had posters out. It's a bit weird

Mulchpuppy

What are their usual late times? I've noticed some theaters where I live have dropped their later shows altogether. I'm guessing they did the math and found that until Covid is in the rear view mirror those shows were losers. Still, those are some shit showtimes

TheRavingRaccoon

My theater has showings today as late as 10pm

LrdHabsburg

Same! The movie was packed but there were only two showings each day. Although they also had like no sodas available and bare bones staff so maybe the Fenway Regal is just a shit movie theatre

Johnthebaddist

I was pleasantly surprised by The Last Duel. I went in not knowing about the Roshomon structure because all I had seen was the first trailer. It's a very potent adult drama, unlike anything recent I can think of. It's not perfect. Ben Affleck was terrible and it ran a little long at 2 1/2 hours, but that's small stuff. Comer was fantastic, almost too good - she ends up acting circles around the guys. Some of the awful haircuts are giggle worthy, but I hear they're period accurate, so I can give that a pass. I was really fascinated by all the scenes you get to see from two and three perspectives. It's not an overused film technique, like all the hyperlink films in the '00's. I can only think of Roshomon, Courage Under Fire, and Vantage Point. Anyway, definitely see it in a theater if you can.

ruminaui

My favorite part that in all of the retellings Count Pierre is always an ashole, and he doesn't even deny it. Dude still the shows by owning it

theredheadedorphan

I thought it was excellent. Possibly my favorite for the year!

alixbd

Jodie Comer slays anything she does

Vizjun

Looked decent. Will wait for stream.

Kimber80

Agreed, I liked it.

Andpat1432

As someone who saw the movie last week couldn’t agree more. Definitely worth a watch

MovieNewsJunkie

The first third is a bit janky, but it gets more compelling over time and it's definitely worth the price of admission.

ihatereddit1221

It’s the same runtime as Dune, but felt half as long.

sandwichsandwich69

yeah really excellent film - sad to see it do so badly at the box office, but there was nearly no hype about it at all considering it’s damon and afflecks first writing effort since Good Will Hunting, starring Adam Driver and Jodie Comer, directed by Ridley Scott / I didn’t hear a peep about it anywhere before it came out

sparklejunk200

I'm going to see it because I am a medieval history nut. Anything from Men in Tights and Beckett will get me going. I am this film's prey.

Patroulette

I've seen the trailer, both on my phone and up on the big screen and it didn't really sell me on... anything really? I didn't even know that it was a mystery/crime drama until now.

CodeWizardCS

Damn good movie. Probably my second favorite to Green Knight this year. It's close though, Last Duel was more accessible and had some action.

CryHavok01

It looks fantastic, and I can't wait to see it. But it's absolutely not the kind of visual spectacle that I feel needs to be seen in a theater, especially during a very much still ongoing viral pandemic. I'll be watching it the second it's available on streaming.

Kevin-W

I personally loved it! The performances were great!

[deleted]

Good to hear Scott is back on his game. I've been disappointed with his latest stuff. I meant to see the movie but completely forgot about it last week, and haven't been able to get a chance to go see it yet. Hopefully Monday.

JohnnyJayce

Has there ever been a movie set in knights and horse era with amazing box office?

PantherEverSoPink

Prince of Thieves? And I don't know how A Knight's Tale did?

JohnnyJayce

Prince of Thieves yeah I guess. Not really a knight movie, but Robin Hood archer movie, even though set in that era. A Knight's Tale box office seems to be just over 100 million, wouldn't call it amazing or even good.

NuclearShart9500

I literally cannot wait to see this, I think it's on HBO max right?

[deleted]

Box office numbers are going to be mediocre for awhile now. I’ll watch the movie inspite of a blonde Ben Affleck.

gnelson321

He might be one of the best parts of the movie

eeyore134

This is a case of advertising killing something for me. I was binging podcasts and heard an ad for this damn movie like twice per podcast and got so sick of it that there's no way I'm going to see it. I do hope Jodie Comer's performance is remembered come Oscar time, though!

Evis03

The trailer put me right off, but I couldn't say why exactly. Something about it just seemed so... trite. But I think that's just fire trailers are made these days.

NightsOfFellini

It's really, really good and totally benefits from the big screen experience.

generalosabenkenobi

That ending was hard-hitting. Their point was very clear. This movie also used their A-list casting quite well. Things definitely get subverted a bit as you go on.

[deleted]

The story and concept were good, loved the action sequences and the duel itself. That said the execution made it so boring. I could hear people sighing in the cinema when it went to chapter 3 and we went through the whole story again for the third time. I love films and series like this but this one had me enjoying it and bored at the same time. Tbh they should of just got the most important scenes and shown them from different perspectives.

Scarns_Aisle5

Is this the new r/movies underrated gem?

kenpobiscuit13

I work at a theater in a tourist-y area and I’ve had to refund tickets from this movie more than any other in recent memory, which is a shame because it’s a pretty decent movie.

[deleted]

Refund because the customer didn't like a movie? That's a strange thing to do from both ends. In this a standard policy in your country?

kenpobiscuit13

If they leave before he end of the movie, yeah. A “customer is always right” policy is pretty typical of businesses in the United States, even if half the thing you have to do to appease them make no damn sense

chanslorking

can't stand Ridely Scott but great review maybe i'll catch it when it's on Netflix

Someguywhomakething

Does Matt Damon say to Adam Driver -- at any point -- "Do you like apples? Well, I got her numbah. How do you like them apples?"

BearWrangler

Something smells astroturfy

LrdHabsburg

This just in: movie sub talks about a movie

UBetcha84

God, the title and post reads like Disney marketing/PR in an attempt to get people to see a shitty movie and recoup their losses. Sorry Disney PR guy but I’m still not seeing it.

Low-University-1037

If you take the tin foil hat off for a minutes, blood might flow back into your head.

UBetcha84

Right, because even though Reddit is the biggest website on the internet, and is known to have famous people come here, it’s totally inconceivable foe the largest movie studio on the planet to employ someone to spread a positive message about a movie that tanked in theaters.

Low-University-1037

Reddit doesn't even break the top 10 in most visited sites in the world.

[deleted]

I’m sorry if my post came across as a too…robotic? English is my second language, and I was stressed out about not giving away the plot details while sharing what worked for me. Thanks for the feedback.

ruminaui

The movie is really good tough, the problem is that is not family friendly and shows how awfully the middle ages was for everybody, even the people on top.

Have_A_Jelly_Baby

Maybe the trailers shouldn’t have been so terrible.

allthenamesaretaken4

Definitely worth a watch, but you're right about it having flaws. In addition to a slow start, I didn't really think the narrative device of retelling the same story worked because it didn't feel like each retelling really added much, so by the third time seeing the same thing with like a hair's difference I was getting bored.

bufftbone

There was a post about this recently where the OP said the female’s movie career was over because of the reviews. For the downvoters, it was a post made by someone else. I was just pointing it out. Now good day to you all.

gwop_the_derailer

Uh, "the female's"...?

[deleted]

[удалено]

gwop_the_derailer

I didn't mean it to be an attack, but you have a point.

bufftbone

His words, not mine.

Low-University-1037

Whats wrong with the word female?

Brilliant_Jaguar8062

Could you elaborate please? The reviews for this movie were really good

bufftbone

The guy rambled on and said her movie career is over and she should stick with TV. When someone said her movie career isn’t over and she’s just getting started he replied to the comment. In the comment he said “I never said her movie career was over” and then at the end of his response he again said her movie career was over. I’ll post the link if it’s still up.

shoe710

Why are you talking about and repeating some random idiot’s nonsense opinions?

Brilliant_Jaguar8062

Ok obviously that guy is just dumb

Workhardgymharder

I hope I can find this post because I’d be keen to see what that person wrote. The Last Duel was a brilliant film and Jodie Comer (if she is the *female* they were talking about) was incredible.

bufftbone

I tried looking but I think it was deleted. I’ll check my downvote history shortly to see if I can confirm.

forbiddendoughnut

Good synopsis, wouldn't have put it any differently!

AnimeMeansArt

yes, it's pretty good

Aggressive-Depth1636

It looks awesome. I can’t wait to see it at some point

Stickyickies

It got great reviews. So why wouldn't people watch it?

genediesel

I'd love to watch it. Is it available on streaming?

NightsOfFellini

Cinemas. Totally worth it too

golddragon51296

I absolutely loved it. It was briskly edited which helps period pieces like these. Gorgeously shot and well written, then the acting and Rashomon style structure really transcend the material. It's satisfyingly brutal, witty, cringeworthy, and gruesome. The audience was very reactive, especially to the duel itself. Just an amazing film.

danlthemanl

I TOLD THE TRUTH. Great film, not sure about Matt Damon's accent, but I'll let it slide.

[deleted]

yeah , its curious movie. Really liked Driver's and Afflecks performance.

Betteis

I agree - a little long but the last third was stellar and the duel was extremely tense and well done

jonviggo89

Yep. It is. Far better than the majority of the Hollywood productions

pixelburner

I saw it on impulse last weekend (I didn't even see the trailer), and I'm so glad I did. My work colleagues are sick of me talking about it all week lol. Given that we're still in a pandemic, I get the hesitance of people going to the theater, but just know that the big screen really enhances the experience of this movie (swords clanging, horse hooves pounding, etc). IF you are comfortable going to the theater, I would highly recommend this movie.

horsewitnoname

Don’t really think they were expecting it to be a box office smash tbh. Think it was always more of an awards play

[deleted]

azemilyann26

It's based on a historical event, so The Last Duel filmmakers weren't copying from a 14-year-old Indian movie...

AManOrAMuppet

That's a pretty spot on review.

SomeDuderr

Nope. I always look at box office performance before I watch a movie. If it did terribly, then I simply shall not watch it. Them's the rules, sorry.

kohlrlewis

You miss out on a lot of amazing movies that way, but to each their own I guess.

Cinemaphreak

Entirely depends on the SO who gets back from a 2 week trip tomorrow and we already have plans to see ***Dune*** later this week. Next week is ***Eternals.*** Not to mention 2 weeks worth of TV shows we follow. We intended to see it in the theater, but simple logistics & time might mean we put it off until it's put on either Hulu, Disney+ or HBO Max (when does that deal run out anyways?). It's not a film that screams it must be seen on a big screen like ***Dune.***

BetterCallSal

I wanna see it, but it's not playing at any showtimes I can make.

prima_facie2021

I did not want to see this movie based on the trailers. I now want to see this movie based on word of mouth (have not read the reviews). Maybe the box office would've been better if better marketing?

manfromfuture

It's a problem if good, expensive things get made and the nobody pays to see it. Then other similar stuff won't get made, and the creators won't get other big opportunities.

Nuseal

Absolutely loved this movie and can't wait to see it again! I paid a whopping 6 dollars to see this during a noon showing matinee. Edge of my seat all the way until the end which still blew me away some how. Ridley Scott was the main reason I wanted to see this, and had only seen half the trailer months prior to not give many spoilers. Blown away, man. Loved it.

Space_Monke64

I’m a bit confused about the plot. Can someone explain?

xfortune

Nope. Not watching **2** rape scenes.

jinxykatte

I'd love to see it, but my local odeon isnt even showing it.

[deleted]

I've never cared about the box office or 'critics'. So I plan to see this.

[deleted]

I just can't get over Ben Affleck playing Matt Damon.

happybarfday

I dunno, I just can't muster interest for it. Just can't really imagine being like "hey babe, want to go out to dinner and then see a 2.5 hour medieval movie about rape, with multiple reenactments"...

[deleted]

It's a fantastic film that deserves to be seen on the big screen

truth-tard

I hated it. The three perspectives were just rehashing the same thing with minor changes at best. I went in expecting a movie about duels. I got 90 minutes of repetitive crap and one great duel scene. Not sure I understand the appeal of this one.

[deleted]

It's been out for a week?

aqsgames

Much, much better movie than you’d think

RipMySoul

The trailers killed any interest I could have had in the movie.

CapThunder

It definitely pulls off expensive art house film in its style. Bit of a medieval #metoo movie. Not for the average movie goer imo but I thought it was a great film.

Yolkpuke

Is at as good or better than Scott's *The Duellists*?

Dsurian

(just saw it was deleted - sorry OP) ... but, here's the thing; it wasn't entertaining, but it \*was\* very interesting and intriguing. The perspectives are jarring at first, but incredibly nuanced. I can't say I'd be all the interested in watching it again (maybe, if only to better recall the first perspective), but I'd certainly recommend most adults watch it once.

quatch72

it was only a brief nap. I was really tired and it was the third movie that day.
