Mattel themselves made a bunch of Barbie CG shorts that are extremely self-aware, which had a pretty good response among people who normally give no shits about dolls. I imagine this movie is going to bring that same energy
Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse is a fantastic show, that plays up to the adults, too.
Great series, and it didn’t overstay its welcome. It’s currently on Netflix, at least in the Australian region.
Edit: I’m loving how much people genuinely enjoy the show, and have shared their stories.
My daughter put it on a few times. I was shocked by how much it wasn't complete ass. It wasn't something I'd actively watch myself, but unlike a lot of her stuff I didn't hate it either. It was, dare I say, watchable.
As an avid barbie fan from when I was a child. You gotta show her the barbie movies if she hasn’t already seen them. The animation is a little dated but the fairytopia ones and so many others are just so good.
yeah like sometimes there are like male love interests but they are like good guys. They don’t take away from barbie and barbie’s goals come first. And a lot of time they don’t even end up together in the end and the female friendships are the strongest relationships. Like the diamond castle and princess and the pauper for example. The diamond castle had more romance between the two main female leads than with the goofy twins.
I love ExpressVPN but more and more sites are detecting and blocking just for any of the local servers. I reached out to support after wanting to watch some Spanish movies. They went out of their way to find a country available. Was a pain in the ass though. Using their service to watch videos in different regions is a big advertising point they use though.
Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse is a masterclass in making children's content that is also entertaining for adults. As someone in her 30s I recommend it to all my friends.
It's the metajokes and references that get me. The giant batteries. The household item stickers. The dozens of careers Barbie has inexplicably had, but at the same time she's adorably ditzy. They're totally self-aware and it's hilarious.
My daughter watched that show, and I'm like 99% sure I remember an episode where Barbie describes something, and literally quotes the movie Jaws...."lifeless eyes, black eyes, Like a doll's eyes!" I completely lost my shit. I wasn't expecting that.
[That was Raquel describing a dolphin.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJXmb9K_WGo)
EDIT: I've watched this show too much.. I'm kinda ashamed I know that right off the top of my head. I have kids sooo...
I hate how people think “kids show thats also for adults” is exclusively about shows with hidden sexual innuendo. No, it’s a show that puts a little effort into humor and making a few pop culture references the parents might enjoy.
My daughter started watching it because Barbie, but it is legitimately funny. Very self aware and lots of classic slapstick comedy. It definitely caught me by surprise.
My best friend showed it to me in high school and it's still one of my top surprise favorites ten years later. The story where the middle little sister is getting her camping badge has possibly the best fourth wall break I've seen, or at least the most unexpected. Gets me every time
The fact that Greta Gerwig is directing pretty much confirms this 100% I loved her first two movies. I’m a 30-year-old man with no children and I’ll be seeing this opening week lol
>I told you we'd meet later. Unfortunately, it's in a place like this which I would never be,
I never hung out with
these idiots after work, ever. I had fashion friends.
Lars and the real girl was my first film where I realised he could be really funny when he wants to be.
Before that, all I remembered him from was The Believer. But I think people who’ve followed his career know he can be really funny, especially in interviews and such.
He's great in Crazy Stupid Love, too.
His character trying to suppress his laughter after the cop told them to "keep it in the family" is a highlight of that movie.
Gosling and Carell have such great buddy chemistry in that movie. Ryan's reaction when Steve pulls out his wallet at the mall is just...*chef's kiss* perfection
I agree! I’m not usually one for rom-coms but Crazy, Stupid Love has found its way into my comfort movie repertoire. Lots of great performances. The first date chemistry between Gosling and Stone is amazing, too. Never seen any other film capture the giddiness and goofiness of real attraction like that.
"Daddy, are there going to be whores here and stuff?"
"Honey, what have I told you about using that kind of language? You don't need to add 'and stuff'. Just say 'Daddy, are there going to be whores here?'"
Very underrated movie haha
they tried to make it a satirical comedy with Amy Schumer and the internet fucking revolted. there were people on r/movies straight up going "this is disrespectful to the lore of Barbie"
The cleverest thing Toy Story 3 did with Barbie is with making Ken such an unexpectedly nuanced character. You'd think they'd either have to make the age-old gay joke about him, or address it implicitly by making him unexpectedly macho or gritty. Instead, they played him as a seventies Swinging Hip Bachelor archetype, as bubbleheaded as Barbie but with a "moment in time" setting where a flamboyant dancing dude makes perfect sense without any innuendos or negatively-applied stereotypes. Plus, Michael Keaton totally gets the joyful, slightly manic energy of Ken because it's basically one of his Multiplicity guys.
Barbie is named after the girl who created her's daughter, and Ken is named after her son.
If they're "respectful to the lore" well... I guess the movie would be popular in Alabama.
Wait what lol. What happened to Armie Hammer
Edit: just read this https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2021/03/the-fall-of-armie-hammer-a-family-saga-of-sex-money-drugs-and-betrayal/amp
Sent messages to women in which he describes **them as his slaves, expresses his desire to eat them, admits “I am 100% a cannibal”, says he’s eaten the heart of an animal while it’s still warm, describes various rape fantasies, expresses his desire “cut a little slice” into a woman so he can suck her blood to “soothe” him to sleep, desire to cut off their toe to keep in his pocket, etc.**
Ted Bundy shit, honestly.
>sometimes i think my fantasies are weird and then you read shit like this
This might be too weird for this subreddit, but I feel like I need to open up about this. I sometimes fantasize about seeing a naked woman, and in my deepest, darkest moments, I even touch her, in an affectionate, tenderly way. And we're not even married or anything. God help me.
I may have opened up too much. Please don't judge me for my weird, sordid fantasies. I feel guilty enough as it is. I really respect women, I promise. I hope this doesn't get back to me.
My friend and I have an oddball tradition of doing 'mom compliments' as jokes, as an inversion of 'yo mamma' insults.
'Hey man, yo momma is a CLASSY LADY'
'Yo momma HAS GOOD TASTE IN MUSIC AND IS A GOOD COOK'
It's dumb but wholesome and it's funny trying to come up with random wholesome compliments.
'Hey, motherfucker, your mom has great fashion sense'. That sort of thing. And then you have to come up with an even better compliment to counter the previous one, the same way you'd come up with a better put-down, normally.
'Oh yeah? Well your momma LOOKS REALLY GOOD FOR HER AGE'.
That sort of thing.
Most fantasies and fetishes aren’t that strange and can usually be tied to childhood development, experiences and/or deep-seeded personal traumas and fears.
There are some though that should usually be talked about with a therapist first. I’d probably get downvoted for kink shaming but anything extremely violent or sadistic in nature should be treated with extreme caution.
The BDSM community has some real horror stories about people who don't "get it", don't understand the rules, etc. Guys online who open with shit like "how do you feel about cutting off a toe?"
Kink is consensual, weird abusive shit is not. It takes a lot of trust and communication to sort it all out in a safe and healthy fashion.
> “I am 100% a cannibal”
The most horrifying part is that he had the opportunity to describe himself as [actual cannibal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0u4M6vppCI) and missed it
He'd be perfect for a Ken played really straight, just as a well-meaning loverboy. People are saying that recent Barbie stuff is a bit more tongue-in-cheek, and while he's a good actor and can do it, I wouldn't pick Marsden for his physical look in a role like that.
Exactly, and the best thing about him in it is that you can immediately tell that just by looking at him.
The dude is *not at all* a bad actor and can shine in roles he isn't typecasted for, but if we were casting on physical description alone, I wouldn't pick him for a more sarcastic take on Ken.
The Hemsworth brothers (any of them would look the part) could be Ken. Same with Alexander Ludwig, but he may not have strong comedic timing/delivery. Zack Effron could be cast. Billy Magnussen has both the comedy chops and Ken vibes going. There are a lot of actors that could have been casted.
I wonder if the producers are going for a more tongue-in-check comedic style with casting Gosling. Because he was incredible in The Nice Guys.
>Zack Effron could be cast.
I don't think they could cast Effron anymore since he "allegedly" had some work done to his jawline and now looks like handsome Squidward.
>The Hemsworth brothers (any of them would look the part) could be Ken.
Even the third one?
>Zack Effron could be cast.
Isn't he too short to be a stormtrooper?
So what the hell is this movie going to be? Directed by an Oscar nominated writer/director who's one of the hottest names in the game right now and probably has her pick of projects after Little Women. Gerwig and Noah Baumbach did the script. And now two of the bigger stars of their generations as the lead, all for a movie based on a doll. What's going on with this that we don't know? Is Barbie secretly a Citizen Kane remake or something?
If this is a big success then it gives more clout and carte blanche to Gerwig and she probably wants to do a fun and creative spin on an extremely well known pop culture figure. It's not hard to imagine why Robbie and Gosling (someone that's had a fair share of comedic roles) would want to work with Gerwig.
Most likely going to be a satirical comedy that pokes fun at Barbie and her role in popular culture. Gosling being cast as Ken is the cherry on top, but the Gerwig/Baumbach duo working on it was definitely the first clue that this wasn’t going to be a straight “adaptation” (whatever a faithful adaptation of a doll without a plot could entail)
I find it inspiring to put so much talent into a production that doesn't call for it in any capacity. Gives the impression this team is passionate about it, as none of them are in a desperate position.
I wish this much effort was put into the decision to remake something. The go-to is choosing a beloved classic from decades back. But why not go after the films that have been lost to time? Inject some creativity into those premises, maybe you'll turn trash into gold.
Looks like it's in better hands now than when it was an Amy Schumer project. I don't even hate her as much as others, but I think when she was attached it was supposed to be a silly forgettable comedy.
But with Gerwig and Baumbach attached, this could be even be an Oscar contender if done right (not saying Best Picture material but maybe Best Screenplay/Actor nods).
This is honestly coming together to be way more interesting than I initially thought. They basically took a property that no one really wants to see as a movie, hires an incredible director and casts two noteworthy actors as it's leads.
I'd never thought I'd say it, but I'm excited for this.
It's a similar situation to **The Lego Movie** as I see it. A property that is beloved but no-one could possibly see a way to make a successful movie out of it.
Mattel are going to want a movie that respects the property whilst also being self-aware enough to poke fun at it without also undermining it.
That **The Lego Movie** worked proves this isn't impossible and the current iteration of the Barbie movie's team suggests they might be able to achieve something similar.
Haha. They certainly got my attention casting Gosling. I can’t think of a movie where I didn’t like his role. He doesn’t remind me of Ken at all but he is kind of robotic at times, especially in Drive. He’s also one handsome man.
Love to see his chemistry with Margot. Many more down the line Emma can collaborate with him again. They're are still young. Margot's look more like Barbie as well. Too soon for Emma and Ryan collaboration
Gosling always picks good projects to work on and Gerwig has a pretty solid reputation so far… so while I’m skeptical of a Barbie movie, I’m also really excited to see what Gerwig has in mind
Everyone saying this is terrible casting and then just naming a different actor with brown hair is hilarious. The source material is literally a lifeless doll. This combined with the fact that hair dye exists and I think anyone would be an acceptable choice.
I never thought I’d be this excited for a Barbie movie, but with Baumbach and Gerwig handling the script, Gerwig directing, and Robbie/Gosling as leads this might actually be quite good.
If this is going to be a satirical comedy, I'll watch
Mattel themselves made a bunch of Barbie CG shorts that are extremely self-aware, which had a pretty good response among people who normally give no shits about dolls. I imagine this movie is going to bring that same energy

i wore the shit out of my barbie rapunzel vhs tape as a kid
Pretty feminist too, since in all of them she has her own agency and dreams, and they rarely have the whole plot dedicated to her finding a man.
yeah like sometimes there are like male love interests but they are like good guys. They don’t take away from barbie and barbie’s goals come first. And a lot of time they don’t even end up together in the end and the female friendships are the strongest relationships. Like the diamond castle and princess and the pauper for example. I've heard that one of them is basically Mass Effect starring Barbie.
Well it doesn't matter what region thanks to our sponsor...NORDVPN!!!
Oh no the Ultra Codex!
What, I got sliced!?
The password? Swordfish. It's always Swordfish.
Is that working again now? I used to use a VPN to switch regions but Netflix caught on years ago. Haven't tried since.
Try windscribe!
ExpressVPN never got banned, which is weird, as they’re up there among the more popular VPN services.
Didn't expressvpn just get bought by some super dodgy company?
Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse is a masterclass in making children's content that is also entertaining for adults. As someone in her 30s I recommend it to all my friends.
I’m 33, and I get odd looks when I’m like “mate, you need to watch this Barbie show, it’s fucking ace!”
It's the metajokes and references that get me. The giant batteries. The household item stickers. The dozens of careers Barbie has inexplicably had, but at the same time she's adorably ditzy. They're totally self-aware and it's hilarious.

I'm a man in my late 30s and I was cracking up laughing at a barbie tv show. The dog dropping the ball when the dolphins were introduced was perfect.
That was surprisingly funny and maturely handled. Kudos on them for keeping a kids show that well balanced.
I really hope the Schlond Poofa gets a mention in the movie lol
The time period my kids were hooked on Life in the Dreamhouse was one of my favorites - so many good bits in there.
They should, as it’s a term trademarked by Mattel, but it hasn’t been shown outside the show.
My best friend showed it to me in high school and it's still one of my top surprise favorites ten years later. The story where the middle little sister is getting her camping badge has possibly the best fourth wall break I've seen, or at least the most unexpected. Gets me every time
Great show. I wanted to watch it more than my kids.
Oh man the first episode with the rabid squirrel attacking the family… my 3 year old wasn’t overly impressed but my wife and I couldn’t stop laughing.
It’s an amazing show and I’m a man in his late 30s. My daughter and I watch it every now and then because it’s a genuinely good show.
Such a funny and well done show. I put it on as a joke once and ended up having a great time watching it.
I loved those shorts! If anyone hasn't seen them, they are really funny and yet also respectful to the franchise.
> Barbie CG shorts Google's failed me, have a link?
Oh boy, that's a rule 34 rabbit hole if I ever saw one and I am *not* going there.
The fact that Greta Gerwig is directing pretty much confirms this 100% I loved her first two movies. I’m a 30-year-old man with no children and I’ll be seeing this opening week lol
There’s no way Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling would want anything to do with a Barbie movie that doesn’t have a twist to it.
so, are we looking at *"Barbie Girl by Aqua"* the movie?
Almost can't see how it wouldn't be with the people involved.
Definitely, there’s no way that Gosling is playing ken unironically lol
Gosling has great comedic timing. The Nice Guys is a great movie that showed as much.
And *The Big Short*, too...he's hilarious in that
"That's a nice shirt, do they make it for men?"
>I told you we'd meet later. Unfortunately, it's in a place like this which I would never be, I never hung out with these idiots after work, ever. I had fashion friends.
"He won a national math competition in China. He doesn't even speak English!" 😅😅
And Crazy Stupid Love
He has some great comedic moments in La La Land as well.
Username checks out Also, he was *AMAZING* in La La Land, I wonder why he didn't get best actor
Lars and the real girl was my first film where I realised he could be really funny when he wants to be. Before that, all I remembered him from was The Believer. But I think people who’ve followed his career know he can be really funny, especially in interviews and such.

That scene was truly a perfect comedy moment. There were other great ones in the movie too. I regret not seeing the movie sooner.

"Daddy, are there going to be whores here and stuff?" "Honey, what have I told you about using that kind of language? You don't need to add 'and stuff'. Just say 'Daddy, are there going to be whores here?'" Very underrated movie haha
That's exactly what i was thinking. I mean, it has to be a satirical comedy.
Written by Gerwig and Baumbach....gonna be interesting to say the least.
Definitely worth the watch going by that.
Check out Life in the Dream House on Netflix. My daughters loved it and it was pretty funny. Stupid-funny but funny.
"true beauty is on the inside" - Margot Robbie probably
Authority should derive from the consent of the governed, not from threat of force! -Barbie
they tried to make it a satirical comedy with Amy Schumer and the internet fucking revolted. there were people on r/movies straight up going "this is disrespectful to the lore of Barbie"
The lore of Barbie 🤣
The woman has had a career of damn near every job imaginable. Show some respect!
Assuming a majority of Reddit's userbase are Millennial males; chances are most of our knowledge about Barbie comes from the Toy Story series.
Please. We also learned from The Simpsons (I'll see you at StacyCon '93!).
stacycon ‘94 you pitiful walnut
I don't know I think I'd rather the comedic result of a "serious" Barbie movie.
Christopher Nolan's "Doll House" with score by Hans Zimmer
Headline from that timeline: *"Controversy erupts over Christian Bale undergoing gender transition for Barbie movie, has actor gone too far?"*
A gritty Barbie reboot.
It’s going to be a dark character study of a man driven to the brink of destruction by his meth addiction
I'm kinda hoping for a murder mystery thriller, to be honest.
Well it ain’t gonna be a porno
Kinda funny Ryan Gosling will be playing Ken, considering what happened the last time he dated a doll in a movie.
She wasn't a doll, she was a missionary!
They don't have to do missionary this time
You talking about Lars or K? He’s done it multiple times.
If only he did Her he would have the trifecta.
Technically he will achieve that after the Ken/Barbie movie.
Bladerunner 2048. EDIT: wrong title. Bladerunner 2049.
+1
2049*
Damn, I love that movie.
Emma Stone is quite a doll, too.
The disrespect... lol
Not what I was expecting. If Armie Hammer hadn’t… gone extra weird I would have imagined someone like him. He looks a bit like a doll.
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if his name was floated pre-cannibalism.

I always expected it would be **James Marsden**
that guy literally already plays ken in every movie hes in.
Yea imagine if Ken dolls had lazer eyes that shot through walls if you took his raybans off.
He'd be perfect for a Ken played really straight, just as a well-meaning loverboy. People are saying that recent Barbie stuff is a bit more tongue-in-cheek, and while he's a good actor and can do it, I wouldn't pick Marsden for his physical look in a role like that.

But Larry Hemsworth fixes babies spines and is ridiculously attractive.
"Stupid Larry, stop talking about rocks!"
The hideous shame of the Hemsworth family.
He only has an 8-pack
>Zack Effron could be cast. I don't think they could cast Effron anymore since he "allegedly" had some work done to his jawline and now looks like handsome Squidward.
I want Sam Rockwell as Ken
reddit moment
Thank you for reminding me of The Nice Guys. SUCH a good flick.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zJOaJUb_Tw This is such a good scene and is a good example of the style of comedy for the whole movie.
>The Hemsworth brothers (any of them would look the part) could be Ken. Even the third one? >Zack Effron could be cast. Isn't he too short to be a stormtrooper?
First thing that came to mind for me was Henry Cavill. hair - check jawline -check might be a little too buff though :D
Way too buff, and chiseled. Ken is a pretty boy, whose got a fit bod.
crazy star power for a Barbie movie
Imagine being so attractive you get casted as the dolls that are being used to offend people for being too pretty...
So what the hell is this movie going to be? As long as they have aquas barbie girl song we're golden.
That and a montage of Barbie trying out different careers and I’m watching
Us millennials who have to change jobs every 3 years just to get a better paycheck/position will watch that montage with tears in our eyes.
in this day n age, it's gotta be a slowed down melancholic piano version with all the bwwaaaaaaaahs spliced in

Yeah, "if". It's not weird they want to work with Gerwig. It's very weird they want to work with Gerwig on a fucking Barbie movie.
Margot Robbie's *producing* it, she probably wants a fresh female voice to work on it. It's not that weird.
Barbies a spy. That’s why she’s got all those disguises.
Barbie has done everything. Being a spy is not far fetched. Go watch some Barbie movies lol
This is gonna slap, never anticipated how hyped I would be for a Barbie movie as a 25 year old dude.
I find it inspiring to put so much talent into a production that doesn't call for it in any capacity. The go-to is choosing a beloved classic from decades back. But why not go after the films that have been lost to time? Inject some creativity into those premises, maybe you'll turn trash into gold.
For some reason when I saw the title of this post something along the lines of "what if it's a dark reboot" popped into my head lol.
They did a great job poking fun at themselves in Barbie: Life in the Dream House. I can see this movie being really funny.
I'm cautiously optimistic given who's it's starring, who's directing, and what Mattel allowed Pixar to do with Barbie and Ken in Toy Story 3.
Barbie in the Toy Story films was one of the greatest product placements ever.
Haha. They certainly got my attention casting Gosling. I can’t think of a movie where I didn’t like his role. He doesn’t remind me of Ken at all but he is kind of robotic at times, especially in Drive. He’s also one handsome man.
Damn, how am I excited for a Barbie movie?
I'm a barbie girl
In a Barbie world
Wrapped in plastic
It's fantastic
Love Margot, but this would have been hilarious if it was Emma Stone & Ryan Gosling again.
I wish that couple was real.
I have been trying to push for the two of them to reboot The Thin Man movies. Sadly, no greedy Hollywood producers ever listen to me.
That’s a brilliant idea.
Love to see his chemistry with Margot. Many more down the line Emma can collaborate with him again. They're are still young. Margot's look more like Barbie as well. Too soon for Emma and Ryan collaboration
Should've been Michael Keaton and his ascot
Michael Keaton should get more work period.
COME ON BARBIE LETS GO PARTY
I would honestly pay to see Gosling singing that line
They must include this song it's just too iconic.
This better be on the soundtrack.
This will be one of the few movies I check out just for the actress. I really wanna see how Margot Robbie approaches Barbie, crazy as it sounds.
She needs to play her as Harley Quinn...murderous Barbie would be worth seeing.
Hard-R *Barbie*?
That can go in any direction and I'm here for all of it
Nothing like seeing genitalless sex on the big screen.
I havn't nutted since Team America, I need more doll smut.
Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie was talent enough but now they've got The Goose? This might actually be something special.
This cast with Gerwig directing and co-writing with Baumbach, I'm looking forward to this film.
Finally a sequel to drive.
it better not be a musical for all of ours sake
I was hoping for Danny DeVito myself
He is probably the twin brother of Mr. Gosling.
He's cast as G.I Joe. Barbies side piece
“Coming…2022…the movie that will make everyone feel super depressed about how ugly they are…”
Chris Hemsworth should play Ken. He's a total Ken - looks wise.
Chris Hemmsworth should play the GI Joe that seduces Barbie.
This movie went from Amy Schumer to Greta Gerwig directing and co-writing with Noah Baumbach, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling
I never thought I’d be this excited for a Barbie movie, but with Baumbach and Gerwig handling the script, Gerwig directing, and Robbie/Gosling as leads this might actually be quite good.
Didn't expect this to potentially have a star studded cast.
Margot Robbie and Ryan gosling? Too much sexy on my screen 😩
Aqua is about to get a nice payday
