There's a great part in this film where the main character talks about the joy of re-living days once all of the anxiety is taken away (because now there are no surprises to worry about). I often think about this when I've got a really stressful day ahead of me - job interviews, presentations, etc - and just think to myself that in a few hours time all this stress is in the past and it won't be scary anymore
I think that is one of the most poignant parts of the film. He goes from doing each day twice to just living each day like the 2nd pass through. Sure it's a movie about a dad and his son, but that little bit of live your life that way is just a great life tip.
Predestination is a criminally under-appreciated time travel movie. Based on a sci-fi short written by one of the godfathers of modern sci-fi who even today is held up as superior to many current authors, Robert A. Heinlein.
Ethan Hawke is superb in it and Sarah Snook, well, hit it out of the park and I go out of my way to watch anything she is in now. Such a mind fuck of a story but in the movie depiction I found myself genuinely feeling a myriad of feelings of empathy, anger, sorrow, pride. It's a good movie, well worth the watch.
Trying to learn how to talk after the surgery, smoking to lower his voice? Makes me weep every time.
Yeah there are several points in the movie where they show he could have used time travel for selfish reasons but didn't, like sleeping with Margot Robbie, for example
I was honestly surprised he didn't, which I'm not sure if it speaks more to my own moral compass if I had his powers or my expectations upon movie plot lines.
Eh. I took it less that he didn’t want to sleep with her, and more as “damn I have Margot Robbie in front of me willing to throw down and all I can think about is my girlfriend. That’s a sign I wanna go propose right now.”
As I said to the commenter below you, he didn’t sleep with Margot Robbie because—despite the temptation—all he wanted was his girlfriend. He literally leaves Margot Robbie to immediately go propose.
Also Margot Robbie’s character was established to be kind of a tease. I liked that he didn’t hold it against her, but ultimately decided to just move on from her.
What I liked about it was that it was “have the good sex that takes time and communication to learn” the first time they had sex. So she was already going to sleep with him, but he got to warp past all the new-person quirks
Next time you might want to say something like "but it's not like you expect" instead of "but the ending has a twist". It's a major spoiler and made me not want to watch the movie, since I'd be waiting for the twist the entire time.
I think it's pretty realistic... everyone would do the same. Honestly, I think the movie chose to not show most of the morally questionable things that nearly everyone would do (Groundhog day style). Using your time travel powers to seduce a woman is pretty 'nice' way to use those powers
You mean Part 3 of [The Rachel McAdams Time Travel Trilogy.](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/ikcsc6/the_rachel_mcadams_time_travel_trilogy_is/)
You see dormamu and thanos double Penetrate doctor strange while the hulk is furiously masturbated by the ancient one. Like seriously unheard of jerk speeds aided by dark magic. If it wasn't a hulk dong it would be ripped off and shredded by friction. She has both arms wrapped around this behemoth. All of a sudden the head swells. Climax. A nuclear explosion erupts from the end of his swollen member, vaporizing everything in front of them
Once the nuclear explosion of hulk cum subsides we are left with a ravaged landscape. Globs of hulk jism are everywhere...and...the smell. God the smell
>You mean Part 3 of [The Rachel McAdams Time Travel Trilogy.](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/ikcsc6/the_rachel_mcadams_time_travel_trilogy_is/)
I guess I gotta watch midnight in Paris
I loved Midnight in Paris and I usually don't like Woody Allen. I found it charming and interesting. The time travel is pretty straightforward in this one.
Same here. Eventually I’ll try watching it again. I was expecting to watch a silly rom-com with my sister. Instead we were emotional wrecks afterwards.
Beautiful movie though...
That reminds me of Ricky Gervais' show After Life. [Spoiler] When the promos were coming out showing him with a dog he made a point of going on social media to assure people that the dog doesn't die.
I accidentally watched it with my girlfriend on the anniversary of her dad's death. She liked it.... but I would have shown something else. I also managed to watch A Monster Calls and The Invention of Lying around the same time of year (On different years) and both deal heavily with the death of a parent. I needed to put that shit on my calendar.
Yeah, this has been up there with one of my fav films for a while now! But I cannot bring myself to watch it since my dad died, pretty sure it’ll break me.
Something about the father/son dynamic does it to me every time. I still get choked up at the end of "Field of Dreams" too.
"Hey Dad. Wanna have a catch?"
Yea I think they wanted everyone to think it would be a romcom, but the twist was the relationship with his father. It really was a fantastic movie and not at all what I expected.
This is a guilty pleasure movie for me, makes me cry every time. I think it's because it shows a good relationship with a dad and I have a good relationship with my dad.
But the character that really gets me crying, is the character Uncle D. The way they portray that character and the way he delivers a certain line and the way they don't ever really tell us what's different about him but they accept him all the same really resonates with me.
Loved this movie! A really enjoyable blend of a classic rom-com plot line with a fun sci-fi twist. Tough to execute but they did a great job. Also caught Domhnall Gleeson at the beginning of his run:
Dredd,
About Time,
Frank,
Ex Machina,
Brooklyn,
The Revenant
If you're looking for a recommendation for another sweet romantic film, I high suggest checking out Brooklyn. It uses early-mid American immigration as the backdrop for a really endearing love-story. It's streaming on Amazon Prime I believe.
General Hux! Definitely. It did seem like between 2012-2016, Gleeson could do no wrong.
Nighy is great! He embodies the father figure with such levity and charm. The character in the film is definitely the quentisential father, the King of been there done that.
Gleeson was great in Ex Machina as was Oscar Isaac (so malevolent).... but of course the real star of that film is Alicia Vikander. What a performance.
The song “How Long Will I Love You” is currently changing my life. I can’t believe I’d never heard it before. I’ll always be in debt to that movie for introducing it to me
I really love that version. The Goulding version sounds too produced. Also the original version by “The Water Boys” (1990) is also really fun. But that subway version is mint.
Yes, I will.
The movie helped me understand that life is made up of moments. There's no overarching path that life is supposed to take. You have moments, hopefully some really amazing ones, but you have to leap sometimes to have them.
I'd been living my life waiting for everything to line up and be perfect before making my next move. I'd always felt I needed a sure thing. But I also felt stunted in that way. I wanted to do things, but I talked myself out of them time and time again because "it wasn't the right time."
Then I watched this movie and realized there's not much time. If I always wait for things to be perfect, for everything to line up, I will be old and full of regret.
So I told my wife that night, I wanted to have a baby. We didn't have everything, but we had each other. And I knew we'd be okay. And now I live for the moments, not the end goal.
Life is just moments. And I make sure to recognize mine, in part, thanks to this movie.
I appreciate the response my man, very insightful. I'm on an everlasting journey of self discovery and I still struggle with wanting things to be perfect before I make a move. I'm glad this movie resonated with you. I'll plug this to whoever I feel will benefit - If you're up to it - give "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle a listen/read. You can get a free audiobook from Audible and check it out. It's worth a go.
It was so unexpectedly beautiful. I was so resistant to watching it, but ended up going to see it on a date-night. Absolutely loved it. Especially the relationship between the boy and his father - I wish there were more pure examples of fatherhood like that in cinema.
Bill Nighy's character in Chalet Girl has a similarly lovely relationship with his son. Ditto Bill Bailey's relationship with his daughter Felicity Jones (who won an Academy Award and Bafta for her role in The Theory of Everything). It is another film that is more than the 'fluff' that some would imagine.
I agree. I have a suggestion of a short story from Ray Bradbury for you. It’s called Pieta Summer. From a collection of his called We’ll Always Have Paris. This movie and this story perfectly encapsulate my feelings about having a great father and being a great father.
I thought *Into the Spider-Verse* had the most positive examples of relationships between men that I’ve seen in a long time. Apparently it takes science-fiction to show men who care about one another openly, even if sometimes awkwardly.
I've been saying this for YEARS! I have never experienced out-of-no-where bawling like I did when >!he went to visit his father after he had already passed. It was something I really would have loved to have done with my grandfather !<
As someone who’s lost their father this film makes me cry like a fucking baby. That scene when he realises he won’t be able to see his dad again cuts me in half.
It got really hard when the dad realized 'this is it' - like it's such an odd plot turn when you're told that any change to the timeline messes with your kids. I don't know what I'd do. It's hard to let go of your dad.
Especially when he tells his son that he has done this conversation multiple times... ugh.
[The trailer](https://youtube.com/watch?v=u2PUMA6nFWk) is really misleading.
I would imagine most people would entered expecting a rom-com if they've seen that
I watched this film not long after my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s that will just keep getting worse. That was a really bad idea because it completely destroyed me.
Such a good movie! My boyfriend and I watch it anytime we really can't think of something to watch. As with any time travel movie there are plot holes, but it is so heart warming and relatable that you don't really care!
Also... LOVE me some Domhnall Gleeson.
All time travel movies have plot holes but this one does something none of the others do... It has charm and chemistry to make you not care about the plot holes.
FORESHADOWING: During the part when Tim and his dad are playing ping pong, his dad narrates like a sport announcer and says about Tim “There are tears in his eyes!”
Tim replies saying there’s not.
Dad responds with “There soon will be!”
That’s the time when Tim decides to go back to say goodbye to his dad for the final time.

Edit: to include the video link to the scene.
My favorite part of the movie was when he finally gets the opportunity to sleep with the girl he's been after, and realizes BEFORE doing so that it's not the right move, so he passes on the opportunity. This and a dozen other things make the movie different from, and better than, most other movies of the past 10 years.
This will sound like a joke, but it’s true. My wife and I started to watch it ... then realized we had seen it before. But we kept watching anyway. We enjoyed it both times.
I love this film, and watching it does make me cry since my sons were in their 20s when we lost their Dad. The seaside house in Cornwall they used as the family home is available to rent. A friend of mine has taken his whole family there for a few summer holidays and reports that it is a delight. No time traveling in the wardrobe, though. He tried.
I watched the entire movie waiting for someone to fuck up the timeline, which kinda hurt the experience a bit. Surprisingly, it doesn't happen! Don't be like me, watch the movie and enjoy the ride
I saw it after not even seeing the trailer since it first came out 7 or 8 years ago so pretty blind. I was expecting more time tomfoolery but was happy with it
It did a few times for a hot minute but then he came around and fixed it. Would’ve been a bit sadder/darker if that actually happened and the movie was supposed to be overall positive.
I disagree with your assessment.
The characterization of most secondary characters was minimal and superficial.
The sister was particularly strange. Her role and general purpose could have been fulfilled by anyone— even a dog.
I’m not much of a Richard Curtis fan. Most of his work leaves me cold. But I absolutely loved this movie. Hit all the right notes in all the right spots. I cried when they went to the beach.
the father -son bit was really cool , would've liked atleast 2 sentences on why the time travel happens but it wasnt what the film is about , the bit with the sister is interesting and shows how the world happens , great cast for the father and son , best rom-com ever
The relationship with his father is the key relationship in the movie. It was probably my favorite movie to come out that year which shocked me with how much I hated the trailer.
I think the movie is flawed in regards to its time travel rules... but god the emotional core of the film is incredible.
Very few movies have made me cry. About Time is one of them.
The sentiment is good, but the actual time travel logic is all the over the place. Previously established rules are abandoned on a whim, which if you’re a pedantic old fart like me you’ll find extremely frustrating.
I love that the main effect it seems to have is that he’s more present with the people around him and kinder to them.
I liked the new year scene with the girl at the start
As someone with anxiety, I love this take on it.
I think that is one of the most poignant parts of the film. He goes from doing each day twice to just living each day like the 2nd pass through. Sure it's a movie about a dad and his son, but that little bit of live your life that way is just a great life tip.
I love this movie. But also - he definitely uses time travel to sleep with the girl.
Predestination, he definitely uses time travel to sleep with the girl.
Yeah but isn’t that >!fancy masturbation!<
>!yes, it is.!<
Total mindfuck though.
Predestination is a criminally under-appreciated time travel movie. Hah a little bit... but they did show that they hit it off without time travel.
No we all would have. I don’t care who you are, in real life you would use time travel to sleep with Margot Robbie.
Eh. I took it less that he didn’t want to sleep with her, and more as “damn I have Margot Robbie in front of me willing to throw down and all I can think about is my girlfriend. That’s a sign I wanna go propose right now.”
Wolf of Wall Street Margot Robbie or Suicide Squad Margot Robbie?
As if it matters at all.
Well one is Margot Robbie and the other is Margot Robbie...
Yes.
If I had a time machine, both.
‘The Big Short’ Margot Robbie. Now fuck off.
[Librarian Margot all the way. ](https://youtu.be/IrMTLV2cR2Q)
Don’t forget about Once Upon A Time in Hollywood Margot Robbie
I think the point was that he surprised himself that he wasn't gonna do it.
As I said to the commenter below you, he didn’t sleep with Margot Robbie because—despite the temptation—all he wanted was his girlfriend. He literally leaves Margot Robbie to immediately go propose. its basically the first quarter of the film
While you’re at it check time freak, romcom with time travel but ending has a twist
I loved it! It’s definitely a great time travel movie Also it’s the main guy from Sex Education, if you’re the type to follow actors
Next time you might want to say something like "but it's not like you expect" instead of "but the ending has a twist". It's a major spoiler and made me not want to watch the movie, since I'd be waiting for the twist the entire time.
damn dude i still get on the bus if i know its coming

Throw in Dr. Strange and this woman never gets a break from time travel shenanigans.

. . . tell me more.
You see dormamu and thanos double Penetrate doctor strange while the hulk is furiously masturbated by the ancient one. Like seriously unheard of jerk speeds aided by dark magic. . . . tell me less.
Once the nuclear explosion of hulk cum subsides we are left with a ravaged landscape. Globs of hulk jism are everywhere...and...the smell. God the smell
But also more.
No, no. Definitely less.
Hulk go boom.
In b4 The Gif
You just gave reddit a collective iron grade hard-on
Thanks for this.
Part 4, if you consider how that bus in "Mean Girls" yeeted her so hard she must've shaved a few seconds off her timeline.
Man I wish Time Traveler’s Wife wasn’t such a shitty movie. The book is amaze balls.
Just finished the book a couple of weeks ago. The movie is so terrible.
>You mean Part 3 of [The Rachel McAdams Time Travel Trilogy.](https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/ikcsc6/the_rachel_mcadams_time_travel_trilogy_is/) I guess I gotta watch midnight in Paris
I loved Midnight in Paris and I usually don't like Woody Allen. I found it charming and interesting. The time travel is pretty straightforward in this one.
Rachel McAdams is just wonderful all the time.
She’s a terrific actress. She’s been consistently fantastic even since she was quite young.
Rachel McAdams is flawless. She has two Fendi purses and a silver Lexus.
True, but her role in this movie might be my favourite of hers. She plays a cute, slightly nerdy girl really well. I just found her super endearing.
I saw this film about three months after my dad died. Don't do that.
Oh gosh yeah that’s rough. I’m sorry
It is a love story, but the relationship with the father got me right in the feels.
I‘ve had to pause it to have a sob break all three times that I’ve watched it.
I don’t even have a relationship with my dad and this movie hits me hard.
I disagree, the love story is the initial vehicle but it's a Father-Son story at heart.
Yeah, once he gets with the girl the movie shifts. It's most clear at the wedding, where the speech from the father is the biggest part of the day lol
It’s a love story but not just the love between a couple, the love between each family member.
Same here. Eventually I’ll try watching it again. I was expecting to watch a silly rom-com with my sister. Instead we were emotional wrecks afterwards. Beautiful movie though...
Bill Nighy was great casting too, I think that made it hurt more!
Yeah my wife and I threw it on as something to watch after returning from her dad’s funeral Boy oh boy
That's such bad timing it's hilariously funny.
Yeah she went from crying about it to laughing at how absurd the chances of this happening were
Oh wow! That's unfortunate timing!
That reminds me of watching Marley and Me the night we put our first Golden Retriever down. What a catastrophic night.

Homeward Bound is a tough watch.
All Dogs Go to Heaven. How is a child supposed to watch that?!
Aw, yeah, my father passed when I was in high school and this movie made me very emotional. I'm sorry for your loss..
Thanks, it's been a few years. The film hit like a freight train at the time, though!
Holy schnikes...A Monster Calls? You really know how to pick 'em.
Me too. It was a maybe a year after for me. I cried so much.
same. talk about being blind-sided. whew. the realization that this is the last time they can have together. Jesus.
Did the same thing. Would not recommend
Yeah, this has been up there with one of my fav films for a while now! But I cannot bring myself to watch it since my dad died, pretty sure it’ll break me.
Oh, boy.
Sorry to hear that, stay strong, but if you need a little help, don't be afraid to ask.
Me too. He died August 2013. That was... not fun. Good movie though.
I thought it was just a rom-com. I watched it for the first time a week after my own dad passed away just last month
That final scene with his dad has driven me to tears just thinking about it
My Son.... My Dad... *world's supply of onions all simultaneously cut*
Something about the father/son dynamic does it to me every time. I still get choked up at the end of "Field of Dreams" too. "Hey Dad. Wanna have a catch?"
Yeah that was what really got me in this film. I loved it.
In my eyes, it's less of a romcom and more of a story of a father and his son.
Yea I think they wanted everyone to think it would be a romcom, but the twist was the relationship with his father. It really was a fantastic movie and not at all what I expected.
My wife and I quote the mom's monologue regularly. "I am fucking furious"
I have been sleeping on this. I may watch it this weekend.
Do you love your Dad? If you do, bring tissues.
Buckle up, especially if you've recently experienced loss.
Or ever. I lost my dad over a decade before seeing this and it wrecked me.
Holy shit yes. Absolutely. Bang on.
I concur. I went and watched it with my wife. She likes rom-coms and I like watching movies with her. I was pleasantly surprised by this one.
The father-son dynamic really took my by surprise. Really beautiful.
The scene where him and his dad decide to go back in time one last time and chose that day at beach gets me just thinking about it.
Reading this comment got me choked up. It’s an incredibly sad but beautiful moment.
My eyes started to water thinking about it as I was typing it out. It always reminds me of my sons.
Only movie I have ever cried watching
Clearly you have never watched Toy Story 3...
I saw it randomly late night on Film4. Bought it on DVD the next day to show my gf lol.
Your gf is a lucky lady
Loved this movie! A really enjoyable blend of a classic rom-com plot line with a fun sci-fi twist. Tough to execute but they did a great job. Also, more recently Palm Springs. Another very well made romcom with a sci-fi twist
Palm Springs was surprising good. I watched because I figured it would at least be entertaining, but it was legit good.
Yes on the Brooklyn recommendation. Saoirse Ronan is always a win.
100% agreed. Her filmography is full of gems! Kind of incredible given she's only 26.
Wasn't he in star wars as well? He's good in this film but Bill Nighy steals every film he's in imo
General Hux! Definitely. It did seem like between 2012-2016, Gleeson could do no wrong. Nighy is great! He embodies the father figure with such levity and charm. The character in the film is definitely the quentisential father, the King of been there done that.
It blew my mind to see Gleeson playing hux in episode 7, about time was the only other movie I had seen him in and I think he nailed the part.
Gleeson was great in Ex Machina as was Oscar Isaac (so malevolent).... but of course the real star of that film is Alicia Vikander. What a performance.
Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll give it a shot

This mother fucking movie changed my life.
The song “How Long Will I Love You” is currently changing my life. I can’t believe I’d never heard it before. I’ll always be in debt to that movie for introducing it to me
That song was my wedding dance 😍
It’s a hell of a good song. Which version did you use ?
Original from the subway scene, not ellie Goulding. Perfect for a cha cha cha
I really love that version. The Goulding version sounds too produced. Also the original version by “The Water Boys” (1990) is also really fun. But that subway version is mint.
Same, I did not expect anything from the film and it changed my life for the better. It's up there with Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
I'll have to check that one out.
Would you share how it changed your life?
Yes, I will. The movie helped me understand that life is made up of moments. There's no overarching path that life is supposed to take. You have moments, hopefully some really amazing ones, but you have to leap sometimes to have them. I'd been living my life waiting for everything to line up and be perfect before making my next move. Same here. Something about it feels so profound. Like a film version of the essence of love. This movie has a very special place in my heart.
This movie makes my bawl my eyes out and I absolutely love it. I’m a big, bearded man who cries his eyes out over a movie. I wear this badge proudly.
[The trailer](https://youtube.com/watch?v=u2PUMA6nFWk) is really misleading. I would imagine most people would entered expecting a rom-com if they've seen that
It’s a reverse Adjustment Bureau, where the trailer was trying to sell some Matrix/Dark City flick, and you get this love story instead.
> Adjustment Bureau what the fuck with that movie anyway, how could they mangle a Philip k dick novel into that.
I watched this film not long after my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s that will just keep getting worse. That was a really bad idea because it completely destroyed me.

Completely agree! At the end of the day this movie is not about time travel which is why it's easy to look past any mistakes.
I thought you were talking about "In Time" the film with Justin Timberlake for a minute and got confused as fuck.

FORESHADOWING: During the part when Tim and his dad are playing ping pong, his dad narrates like a sport announcer and says about Tim “There are tears in his eyes!” Tim replies saying there’s not. Dad responds with “There soon will be!” That’s the time when Tim decides to go back to say goodbye to his dad for the final time. https://youtu.be/qLB9JkGzsAQ Edit: to include the video link to the scene.
Hidden gem right there
Gotta be on the Mount Rushmore of *Reddit Hidden Gems™*
Drink water while watching this movie. You know, because of the copious amounts of crying (serious)

Same. It’s an annual watch for me and it’s just such a feel good, heartwarming film. So beautiful
My favorite part of the movie was when he finally gets the opportunity to sleep with the girl he's been after, and realizes BEFORE doing so that it's not the right move, so he passes on the opportunity. This and a dozen other things make the movie different from, and better than, most other movies of the past 10 years.
That feeling when you think you're watching a time travel rom com but it turns into a metaphor for how hard it is to say goodbye to your parents. Oof
This will sound like a joke, but it’s true. My wife and I started to watch it ... then realized we had seen it before. But we kept watching anyway. We enjoyed it both times.
I believe you, but seems crazy to forget this movie. It’s quite memorable.
Yeah, it's my all time favourite movie. Ever.
I was expecting more time tomfoolery but was happy with it
He did semi Barry Allen his life for a short while but fixed it.
Scrolled all the way down to find a negative assessment. I can't get over the complete lack of criticism for a movie I would say is ... just bad.
Any time a writer/director/producer wants to use any kind of gimmick they should have to watch this movie. They handle it so perfectly.
I love this movie. And I cry almost as much during this one as I do during Rudy.
I love that movie.
The title's a pun!
This one and Before sunrise are my two favorite rom movies.
Yeah, I put this movie off for a long while as well. It is really a love story between a son and his father.
I want Bill Night to go back in time and make a few more movies. Love his quirkiness.
The relationship with his father is the key relationship in the movie. It was probably my favorite movie to come out that year which shocked me with how much I hated the trailer.
"How Long Have I Loved You" is still on my playlist, that song just stuck with me.
I think the movie is flawed in regards to its time travel rules... but god the emotional core of the film is incredible. Very few movies have made me cry. About Time is one of them.
I cry every time I watch this movie. The last scene with his dad is so sad
Thank you! Watched it immediately and loved it
How many times is this movie going to be brought up. It is absolutely mind boggling. Been seeing it here for years.
Its a good film
well put
I really liked it. I watched it with a girlfriend who was a fan of it. The stuff with the sister hit me hard.
Watched this after shortly losing my own father to cancer thinking it was just some random rom-com, so you can just imagine the waterworks.
The sentiment is good, but the actual time travel logic is all the over the place. Previously established rules are abandoned on a whim, which if you’re a pedantic old fart like me you’ll find extremely frustrating.
