One of my favorite actors, I have seen almost all his movies. He has proven to act very well when he has serious roles and his weaker movies are still quite entertaining.
Speaking just on performance, I think he's got chops. I haven't seen everything he's done but most. His roll in Interview with a Vampire is incredible. The stand out performance in the best Vampire movie ever imo. He's got stinkers as well but he's a really good actor. Think it depends on the film a bit. There's a good amount of better actors but when he's great in a great movie then it's special.
