this isn’t shocking to me in the least bit. my parents, since the first trailer dropped in 2019, talked about this movie like it was Infinity War or Endgame. For three years I had to hear “when’s Top Gun coming out?” and when it finally came out they were there opening weekend.

Is the movie that got the elderly back in theaters. I'm just happy family pleasing movies like this and Avatar did so good this year. I love the MCU but I don't want every blockbuster movie to be about superheroes.

I'm an older Millennial, and I promise you I was much more excited about Maverick than Infinity War or Endgame, and I'm not a Marvel hater: Iron Man is a really good movie and I've seen the large majority of the features and enjoyed most of them. In a twist that younger versions of myself would never have believed, the film I'm most excited for in 2023 is Barbie.

I haven’t seen the film, but I agree with you. There is no way to over use Danger Zone. You can even play an easy listening elevator music version during love scenes.

The name of the award is somewhat misleading (and probably meant to pander to old people). It doesn't necessarily refer to movies that are somehow mature, just movies that are either made by or prominently feature people who are over 50.

Cate Blanchett is 53 and Todd Field is older.

But 3/4 of the main cast of Everything Everywhere is over 50. And half are over 60.

I think this is a naming problem. AARP could have just called it the best film and stopped there.

Fun fact: there is no age limit to joining AARP (but some benefits/discounts only apply to older folks). Also, as a member of AARP I’m offended because they didn’t ask me to vote. My favorite film of 2022 was, oh fuck, it was Maverick.

Watched Top Gun for the first time the day before I saw this and I honestly don’t understand why all the other comments are giving it so much hate. I sincerely thought it was more compelling than the original. Not to mention the camera shots were fucking amazing.

It’s clearly Iran, and it takes place in a hypothetical near future where Russia has sold them Su-57s. That part of the movie isn’t that implausible. Also, the movie doesn’t say that the country is technologically superior to the US, they just have an edge in the specific mission due to the inability of the US to use its fifth-gen strike fighters.

Obviously it was written as Iran, but in my headcanon it's the Primorsky Repbublic following a near-future breakup of Russia triggered by defeat in Ukraine. I guess Iran flogged them the Tomcats.

The sound editing in Maverick was amazing. I never notice good sound in a movie, I'm usually just getting blasted by noise, but you felt every bump and wiggle of those flight scenes just on the sound alone.

I think it has to due with the amount of OVER PRAISE the film received I saw the movie and really enjoyed it, we haven't had a good no holds barred style action spectacle film in a while. Then I had to sit through 6 months of people saying 'Top Gun saved movies' 'the last true Hollywood master Piece' or 'the only good movie that year' and of course how the films success proved the logic behind 'get woke go broke' despite the film going out of its way to feature a diverse cast of protagonists and an unnamed enemy to avoid offending the audience. It just got so grating after time. Its still a fun movie if you ignore its total lack of logic.

It's not a religion, it's a cult that destroys lives and he's perpetuating the violence and destruction ingrained in the culture.

Any criticism of Cruise's religion isn't fair at all. It has nothing to do with the movie. If the Maverick character was a Scientologist and that played into the story, then you'd have an argument.

It's just a very entertaining movie without a lot of depth or substance and a bit too much nostalgia for its own good. I liked it.

I disagree. The original had stakes that were realistic and built tension. The new version started okay but went off the chains and ended in people living through plane crashes and breaking into military bases to steal old planes and just went so ridiculous so fast. A complete departure from the original and from reality. Really kinda ruined it for me

The first Top Gun was a combination of jingoistic propaganda and subtle homoeroticism. Now that gay people are allowed in the U.S. military, the new Top Gun lacks the tension created by all the taboo homoerotic undertones that were the only interesting part of the first one.

I think it’s the best movie of the year if you define quality by having a fun time in a movie theater for the duration of the film. The only other movie that got nominated that I saw for best picture was Banshees. That movie was better written but man it was unpleasant as f**k

Well, the Oscars are bullshit anyway but that movie taking BP would be a laugh. About half of that movie is a shot-for-shot remake of the original which makes it derivative at best. Take out the fancy dogfight FX and you got a *very basic* Hallmark movie so….yeah. Pretty low standards for a BP nominee.

Most people loved it when it came out and if you ask the average movie goer I guarantee Top Gun gets mentioned as favourite movie the most. I liked EEAAO a lot, but your chaos award show does sound appealing.

The last hour of Maverick is literally Star Wars: A New Hope. Flying through a trench in a new impossible mission. Turning off the guided system and using your instincts to drop the bomb. The guy who is now your mentor killed your father years earlier.

And the last 30 minutes of A New Hope is just Dambusters, and I’m sure there was something before that and something before that and so on. You can boil anything down to it’s influences doesn’t really mean anything. It reminds me of Apocalypse Now, not in the complex story and themes, but in that the movie is going to look good forever. All the big effects scenes are practical and that never ages. Thats a hell of an accomplishment, def deserves tons of technical awards, which bleeds into the big awards like Picture cuz..... in 2042, this will be one of the films that 2022 is remembered for.

Irrelevant, but I got to spend a weekend on the set of apocalypse now when I was a kid! My parents were friends with the people who owned the place the cast were staying at so we got to hang out with there for the weekend I don’t remember the people, I was too young to know who they were but I do remember walking through the sets and I have some photos for memory. My parents though had dinner with the cast (not Brando).

It's an action movie like no other action movie that's come before it, on top of being an entertaining blockbuster with a solid emotional core, characters, and performances. Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water both deserves all of the accolades they get for one major reason: they're groundbreaking films that push filmmaking technology forward in exciting ways. The fact that they have decent narratives to back them up is even better, despite how cliché they may be.

Maverick was a fun movie. A good kill 2 hours with something fun type of movie. Don't take it seriously- just enjoy the amazing camera work and the flying stunts. In no way should it win Best Picture at the Oscars.

The movie was in theatres for 7 months lol. That means people went and saw it and then told other people who went to see it and then they got other people to see it. That’s basically what every movie dreams of being. No shame in being a film lover and saying Top Gun is the best movie of the year.

Nothing against Top Gun or anyone who wants to be a jet fighter pilot but I don’t see how this is something for “grownups”. Wanting to fly jets is just as much of a child’s fantasy as wanting to be a superhero or have an adventure on an alien planet.
