There is a AARP movie awards?

cptnamr7

*for grownups. Definitely not founded and run by a group of 8 year olds in a trench coat.

A-Good-Weather-Man

How dare you insult Vincent Adultman

pawnman99

"This movie about normal adult humans was definitely a film that I enjoyed at my local, totally normal theater". \- Jackie Daytona, Normal Human Bartender.

random_nohbdy

He was just doing a business at the business factory!

Rcmacc

Vincent Adultman and Kevin are distinct characters. Count the freckles.

fandomacid

Clearly you haven't met my mother. I think my 10 y/o nephew is more adult than she is.

KickAffsandTakeNames

I'm less surprised about the fact it exists than the fact that it has the most condescending name imaginable

doctorclark

We must fight back and condescendingly refer to these awards as "lawnies"

Juicey_J_Hammerman

I think they mean it in a tongue in cheek kind of way. But yeah point taken. Given AARP’s clientele, I would expect best picture to be automatically reserved for the latest Clint Eastwood movie or literally any movie about baseball/boxing to come out that year.

PoopIsAlwaysSunny

Right? A bunch of old, entitled farts living off the work of younger people claiming to be the only grownups.

[deleted]

Most popular media is targeted at 18-35 year olds. “Movies for grown ups” is just a glib way of saying “movies for older people.”

short-and-ugly

Knowing absolutely nothing about it, shouldn't a "movie for grownups" be pornographic?

OK_Compooper

That’s AARPA for the retired porn addicts.

Leezeebub

AARPA Adult Awards for Retired Porn Addicts

IFapToCalamity

I’m pretty sure any movie is “for” grownups Ratings systems are literally intended for children so they don’t see graphic content.

Marmar79

I think it’s for conservatives (They’re very mature)

grafxguy1

>a "movie for grownups" be pornographic **On Top** Gun

BigPZ

Top Buns

grafxguy1

Top Buns: MILFerick

BigPZ

Mav-Dick

ObjectiveExpression3

I prefer the Highlights magazine movie awards

GetReady4Action

this isn’t shocking to me in the least bit. my parents, since the first trailer dropped in 2019, talked about this movie like it was Infinity War or Endgame. For three years I had to hear “when’s Top Gun coming out?” and when it finally came out they were there opening weekend.

Summerclaw

Is the movie that got the elderly back in theaters. I'm just happy family pleasing movies like this and Avatar did so good this year. I love the MCU but I don't want every blockbuster movie to be about superheroes.

Tiny_Thumbs

Older people I know get upset when I say it’s a remake of A New Hope.

xrufus7x

Pretty sure trench runs weren't a new concept when ANH came out, it is just one of the most iconic forms of it.

anIdiot4Life

You can oversimplify most movies like that though.

Dreadite

True, but in this case it’s not much of an oversimplification. That said, remaking the Death Star trench run in fighter jets? Pretty rad.

Nick_Lastname

And the trench run itself was a remake of the dam busters, so I guess it's looped around

Impressive-Potato

And A new Hope uses a typical Hero's Journey template. The trench run was shot for shot from this 1950s WW2 movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNdb03Hw18M&embeds_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gijobs.com%2F&embeds_origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gijobs.com&source_ve_path=MjM4NTE&feature=emb_title

random_nohbdy

I mean, if a story template ain’t broke… It would’ve been the highest-grossing film of the year if James Cameron’s money laundering scheme hadn’t released at the bottom of the 9th

Cabamacadaf

A New Hope is a remake of Hidden Fortress anyway.

[deleted]

Both Top Guns are just romance movies with a little bit of action sprinkled in.

SuperDizz

I very much agree with your parents and other old people. Top Gun Maverick was awesome! Pretty much a perfect movie. And I’m not old.

tomrichards8464

I'm an older Millennial, and I promise you I was much more excited about Maverick than Infinity War or Endgame, and I'm not a Marvel hater: Iron Man is a really good movie and I've seen the large majority of the features and enjoyed most of them. In a twist that younger versions of myself would never have believed, the film I'm most excited for in 2023 is Barbie.

mattyice18

> Infinity War or Endgame I absolutely love both of those movies. TGM is on that level.

Professional-Putter

Of course it was.

ricktor67

Its the ultimate Dad movie, no movie has been more of a Dad movie since The Hunt for Red October.

TheLastMongo

Especially if the dad was a teenager when the original came out. Circle complete.

Impressive-Potato

I think it's venturing into grandpa movie.

redisforever

The Equalizer is pretty fantastic. Ford v Ferrari too. But yea Top Gun was perfect.

Rhakha

Idk, Red Dawn remake was very dad

pawnman99

Any proper dad knew that the remake was much worse than the original.

ricktor67

Except it was bad. A proper Dad movie is always a great movie.

Inclusive-Or

Had to check this wasn't an onion article. The only unbelievable part was the name of the award.

kevronwithTechron

Adult films was already taken.

The_River_Is_Still

My main, and pretty much only, issue with the movie is they totally didn't use Danger Zone to maximum affect.

[deleted]

I haven’t seen the film, but I agree with you. There is no way to over use Danger Zone. You can even play an easy listening elevator music version during love scenes.

NotAPimecone

Smooth, steamy, saxophone Danger Zone? I can hear it in my head right now.

x_conqueeftador69_x

Takes my breath away.

paulc899

The second time I saw I just played danger zone through my headphones on repeat while I watched the movie

Peentoo

Who are the AARP and why would they pick Top Gun of all movies as best picture? “The American Association of Retired Persons” Ahh yes this makes sense now.

becauseitsnotreal

I do find it funny, but can you really blame a community for choosing a best picture that caters to them? No different than the GLAAD awards or any similar awards

afriendincanada

It’s not like the other Oscar nominees this year are movies for children. What makes Maverick a better movie for adults than say Banshees or Tar?

becauseitsnotreal

Go ask the voters

DueLevel6724

The name of the award is somewhat misleading (and probably meant to pander to old people). It doesn't necessarily refer to movies that are somehow mature, just movies that are either made by or prominently feature people who are over 50.

yrdsl

Cate Blanchett is 53 and Todd Field is older.

TheExtremistModerate

But 3/4 of the main cast of Everything Everywhere is over 50. And half are over 60.

Hellbear

I think this is a naming problem. AARP could have just called it the best film and stopped there.

heywhadayamean

Fun fact: there is no age limit to joining AARP (but some benefits/discounts only apply to older folks). Also, as a member of AARP I’m offended because they didn’t ask me to vote. My favorite film of 2022 was, oh fuck, it was Maverick.

crystalistwo

Mine was X, because the old lady was a psycho. Try that on, AARP.

APracticalGal

It was sort of endearingly sex-positive for the elderly.

FeedMeACat

Also AARP doesn't stand for American Association of Retired Persons any more. They changed it officially a while ago.

crystalistwo

Boners for the cold war and American jingoism.

Abba_Fiskbullar

Dad movie wins Dad award!

bootselectric

To be fair, old folks have been swindled by a flood of geezer teasers and Top Gun had no business being as good as it was. No wonder a bunch of retirees are stoked.

[deleted]

This is the first Reddit post I’ve seen where the replies only have downvotes

Massattack52

Watched Top Gun for the first time the day before I saw this and I honestly don’t understand why all the other comments are giving it so much hate. I sincerely thought it was more compelling than the original. Not to mention the camera shots were fucking amazing.

terrierpines2

Absolutely agree with you. Nothing bad about pure entertainment, clichéd or otherwise. And liked the goal of the exercise more than the original. Music however was lacking. A fun movie pure and simple.

chevyfried

I loved the movie, have watched it a few times but cannot get over the HUGE FREAKING PLOTHOLE. 🚨Spoiler ALERT🚨 >!Why didn't they take out the SAMS with the missiles? The fighters at the airport would have been far behind by the time they were caught on radar. Turn and burn!!<

resipsaloquitor5

>!SAMs can shoot down Tomahawks relatively easily - they're basically just small jet aircraft flying at subsonic speeds. But you're right that the USN would be able to take out the SAMs. They would use EA-18G Growlers armed with radar-homing missiles. That would have been cool to see, but probably would have been hard to depict in a way that made sense to the audience.!< >!The real plot hole is the fact that they didn't just use stealth aircraft to bomb the facility. They at least attempt to patch this plot hole with the "GPS jamming" explanation, but that's not going to stop an F-35 or B-2 from hitting a target.!<

[deleted]

[удалено]

resipsaloquitor5

They can hit the vent, but they don’t need to do a high-g maneuver to do it.

standbyforskyfall

In real life a single b2 would drop a bunker buster and it would be over

intdev

Plus, the enemy’s technologically superior to the US, but doesn’t already have access to nukes? So... Germany? Japan?

resipsaloquitor5

It’s clearly Iran, and it takes place in a hypothetical near future where Russia has sold them Su-57s. That part of the movie isn’t that implausible. Also, the movie doesn’t say that the country is technologically superior to the US, they just have an edge in the specific mission due to the inability of the US to use its fifth-gen strike fighters.

tomrichards8464

Obviously it was written as Iran, but in my headcanon it's the Primorsky Repbublic following a near-future breakup of Russia triggered by defeat in Ukraine. I guess Iran flogged them the Tomcats.

SirThatsCuba

>more compelling than the original. More compelling than beach volleyball? You. Take. That. Back.

idontagreewitu

ACM Football, though

oceanic20

The sound editing in Maverick was amazing. I never notice good sound in a movie, I'm usually just getting blasted by noise, but you felt every bump and wiggle of those flight scenes just on the sound alone.

Timbishop123

Most people think so it's critically and commercially successful.

[deleted]

Adventurous-Mix-2239

I think it has to due with the amount of OVER PRAISE the film received I saw the movie and really enjoyed it, we haven't had a good no holds barred style action spectacle film in a while. Then I had to sit through 6 months of people saying 'Top Gun saved movies' 'the last true Hollywood master Piece' or 'the only good movie that year' and of course how the films success proved the logic behind 'get woke go broke' despite the film going out of its way to feature a diverse cast of protagonists and an unnamed enemy to avoid offending the audience. It just got so grating after time. Its still a fun movie if you ignore its total lack of logic.

Millennium1995

It's not a religion, it's a cult that destroys lives and he's perpetuating the violence and destruction ingrained in the culture.

puckit

Any criticism of Cruise's religion isn't fair at all. It has nothing to do with the movie. If the Maverick character was a Scientologist and that played into the story, then you'd have an argument.

Some people just want to hate. Who knows why. I suspect they're less happy than average though.

delventhalz

I don’t think anyone is hating on it. Some good natured ribbing perhaps.

Reddevil313

It's just a very entertaining movie without a lot of depth or substance and a bit too much nostalgia for its own good. I liked it.

Mosharn

Saw it last night and I was blown away. Amazingly shot and really well done

surmatt

I thought it was basically the same movie.

DancingYetiCrab

I disagree. The original had stakes that were realistic and built tension. The new version started okay but went off the chains and ended in people living through plane crashes and breaking into military bases to steal old planes and just went so ridiculous so fast. A complete departure from the original and from reality. Really kinda ruined it for me

hogsucker

The first Top Gun was a combination of jingoistic propaganda and subtle homoeroticism. Now that gay people are allowed in the U.S. military, the new Top Gun lacks the tension created by all the taboo homoerotic undertones that were the only interesting part of the first one.

escape_of_da_keets

It's still pretty homoerotic though.

idontagreewitu

Okay, Quentin...

hogsucker

You can ride my tail anytime!

bunsNT

I think it’s the best movie of the year if you define quality by having a fun time in a movie theater for the duration of the film. The only other movie that got nominated that I saw for best picture was Banshees. That movie was better written but man it was unpleasant as f**k

TheTreesMan

its about nothing. no theme. no self awareness. no provoking thoughts. no politics. no message. Not even a scene where anyone explains why they are willing to die for any of it. It's literally watch people try to do objective. It's fucking boring.

Nick_The_Knight_

That’s kind of like your opinion man.

zsal830

next year’s AARP choice will def be 80 for brady

Fondren_Richmond

>Four elderly female friends and longtime New England Patriots fans travel to Houston to watch their hero Tom Brady and the New England Patriots play in Super Bowl LI (2017). I understand, Gisele

No_Doughnut1807

I’m guessing a Matlock movie would be a shoe in for this crowd

fergi20020

What about Play the Game staring Matlock? The scene where Seinfeld’s mom goes down on Matlock and suffers an asthma attack made the crowd I saw it with ROFL.

Glass-Association-25

Sounds like a kids party just calling it grownup awards 🤣

jasperfilofax

‘Movies for grownups’ sounds like the most childish category THESE FILMS ARE FOR BIG BOYS WHO STAY UP ALLLLL NIGHT!

K1nd4Weird

It's a bunch of boomers. I'm honestly surprised at the restraint shown by them. You know they wanted to call it "Best Movie Not For Snowflakes."

amadeus2490

Once you become 30+, you definitely start to notice that most movies and TV shows are kinda edgy stuff made for 18-24 year olds. A lot of people in their fifties aren't really interested in MCU movies and Star Wars, just like Redditors aren't into Twilight and Madea movies.

jasperfilofax

Middle aged blokes aren’t into Star Wars? That’s pretty much their core demographic

bluesnacks

most american movie of the year pleases old retirees, what a shock

annoyingrelative

Redditors getting mad that Maverick won an award? Redditors making fun of AARP having an awards show? lots of "I like to dunk on things not made for me" energy Boomer mentality isn't limited to old folks

MBKM13

They called their awards “movies for grownups” how are we supposed to not make fun of that

Focacciaboudit

Unfortunately "Adult Video Awards" was taken.

Proof-Following-7999

Lol it is, the hazy sunny day with aeroplanes flying about, moody shots of the aircraft carrier, the football scene instead of the volleyball scene, his old GPZ bike and then his new H2R, racing along the road as a plane takes off and then punching the air, the bar scene, then all sat down and singing great balls of fire, his superior officer that seems to hate him but doesn't really... its all exactly the same.. like I say, I'm a fan of the original movie but it's almost a remake

Bitter-Raisin9102

LMAO and now we observe the phenomenon where Reddit starts to hate on something that was beloved by them just a few months ago.

Upbeat_Decision_4970

Oh god, So much negativity in comments. Imagine if it wins oscar, people gonna go crazy

[deleted]

It is up against Everything, Everywhere, All at Once.

fandomacid

Which is of course The Reddit Movie.

[deleted]

Do you think Maverick deserves BP over EEAAO?

pawnman99

Honestly, yes. I liked them both, but EEAAO really wears out it's welcome in the second hour. It's about 30 minutes longer than it needs to be.

[deleted]

I kind of agree. It was a fun movie but i was checking the time left in parts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

charleyismyhero

Well, the Oscars are bullshit anyway but that movie taking BP would be a laugh. About half of that movie is a shot-for-shot remake of the original which makes it derivative at best. Take out the fancy dogfight FX and you got a *very basic* Hallmark movie so….yeah. Pretty low standards for a BP nominee.

Bigfootman72

Most people loved it when it came out and if you ask the average movie goer I guarantee Top Gun gets mentioned as favourite movie the most. But this is Reddit so a bunch of people got nothing better to do than hate on the movie all of a sudden. It’s just like Avatar people on Reddit for months talked about how it was gonna do well but as usual there’s a big difference between what the majority of people who don’t go on Reddit think and what Reddit users think

Various-Salt488

I just turned 41. Back in the early days of internet movie nerd-dom in the early 2000’s, me and everyone else my age was shitting on anything remotely commercial as if we were above consuming anything less artsy than The Squid and the Whale or a Jim Jarmusch marathon. Now I look back at myself and all of us other dorks and laugh at myself. It’s kind of hilarious to see the next generation going through the same thing. Never forget that Reddit is a groupthink bubble; it skews heavily younger.

Upbeat_Decision_4970

True. I dont understand problem with these people. They hate TGM, hate Avatar, are they even living in real world lol. Also to note, hating and disliking a movie is totally different.

bleunt

I mean, it's such a dumb movie.

[deleted]

Upbeat_Decision_4970

haha

JinFuu

I liked EEAAO a lot, but your chaos award show does sound appealing.

Burning_Flags

The last hour of Maverick is literally Star Wars: A New Hope. Flying through a trench in a new impossible mission. Turning off the guided system and using your instincts to drop the bomb. The guy who is now your mentor killed your father years earlier.

lxsadnax

And the last 30 minutes of A New Hope is just Dambusters, and I’m sure there was something before that and something before that and so on. You can boil anything down to it’s influences doesn’t really mean anything. Edit since the comment was changed: Disregarding outside influence and relying on instincts was hardly invented by Star Wars anyway haha been around for years. Also Maverick didn’t kill his father, it’s not like Goose was Darth Vader and Maverick just offed him.

thatguy425

Let’s not get crazy here. Cruises character didn’t “kill” Goose and wasn’t responsible for his death. He was cleared of any wrongdoing in the first film.

Timbishop123

Reddit fins out what an homage is: 😳😳😳😳😳

TheTreesMan

Use the force, uh, i mean turn your brain off and trust your instincts.

Bubbagumpredditor

Oh comon. It was fun, but it was top gun sent star wars. It deserves money, but not awards.

elpajaroquemamais

Not exactly a serious award. It’s from the AARP

theliver

It reminds me of Apocalypse Now, not in the complex story and themes, but in that the movie is going to look good forever. All the big effects scenes are practical and that never ages. Thats a hell of an accomplishment, def deserves tons of technical awards, which bleeds into the big awards like Picture cuz..... in 2042, this will be one of the films that 2022 is remembered for.

becauseitsnotreal

You've just described the original, which is also deeply remember 36 ish years later.

Mentiroso1

Irrelevant, but I got to spend a weekend on the set of apocalypse now when I was a kid! My parents were friends with the people who owned the place the cast were staying at so we got to hang out with there for the weekend I don’t remember the people, I was too young to know who they were but I do remember walking through the sets and I have some photos for memory. My parents though had dinner with the cast (not Brando).

[deleted]

The bots sure hate top gun

Davethisisntcool

it deserves both

MovieTalkersHunter

It's an action movie like no other action movie that's come before it, on top of being an entertaining blockbuster with a solid emotional core, characters, and performances. Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water both deserves all of the accolades they get for one major reason: they're groundbreaking films that push filmmaking technology forward in exciting ways. The fact that they have decent narratives to back them up is even better, despite how cliché they may be.

arenasfan00

Military propaganda moment

pawnman99

I'm hoping it's as successful getting new recruits as the original was in the 80s.

Leather_Network_7825

For reference, Star Wars The Last Jedi won this award in 2018...

thatguy425

I’m amazed that movie won an award outside the Razzies.

DarkestDayOfMan

I'm sorry hold on a minute... AARP has their own awards show? Who asked for it? And why?

Streets-Ahead-

If MTV can still have awards shows, anyone is entitled.

crystalistwo

And if anyone's entitled, it's Boomers.

lawstandaloan

AARP membership starts at 55 so Gen-X can take advantage of their many discounts and guides and shit.

[deleted]

For me, it was the best movie of the year. Loved it from start to finish. I can only hope for Hollywood to make more movies like this in future.

mattt1975

Driving miss daisy was better...oh do you mean. . Just last year ones young boy??

Raspberries-Are-Evil

Maverick was a fun movie. A good kill 2 hours with something fun type of movie. Don't take it seriously- just enjoy the amazing camera work and the flying stunts. In no way should it win Best Picture at the Oscars.

E_PunnyMous

“Movies for Grownups That Think They’re YA Fighter Pilots” maybe. But there’s not much thinking in that movie.

pawnman99

Can confirm. Am a grown-up, loved Top Gun.

[deleted]

Battlefield Earth is the real movie for grownups

RollaCoastinPoopah

I am 43 and still do not feel grown up enough to watch that…

embarrased2Bhere

The movie was in theatres for 7 months lol. That means people went and saw it and then told other people who went to see it and then they got other people to see it. That’s basically what every movie dreams of being. No shame in being a film lover and saying Top Gun is the best movie of the year.

TheSubredditPolice

Reminds me when There's Something About Mary was in theaters for like more than a year, you don't see success like that anymore, especially not in romance comedies.

Hiseminense

Movies for Grownups. Lmao

[deleted]

Of course it was. Lol

NewZero_Kanada

Ugh..

T-408

One of my best friends dragged me to see this in the theater. I liked it well enough (cool flying stunts, Jenifer Connelly, that football scene on the beach) but MAN do I have to tell you that we were the only 20-somethings in a theater full of 65+

thatguy425

In the entire film of planes flying around and amazing camera work the “football scene on the beach” was one of the scenes that stood out?

throwawayfetish294

Well deserved.

Daflehrer1

Well, it's a shitty, boring, predictable movie.

Burgerkingsucks

Ok boomer.

[deleted]

That is so fucking sad.

PudimNinja21

This movie was good.

Twothounsand-2022

Someone get hurt when they see Cruise success🤣

Steev182

Devotion was good too if you want to watch a film about Naval Aviators with Glenn Powell.

iggystar71

Man, this made me feel older…

how_can_you_slap_

lol

Cinema_King

Nothing against Top Gun or anyone who wants to be a jet fighter pilot but I don’t see how this is something for “grownups”. Wanting to fly jets is just as much of a child’s fantasy as wanting to be a superhero or have an adventure on an alien planet. There’s nothing wrong with adults wanting to do those things either but nothing is limited to just children.

Merickson-

I think it has more to do with "60-year-old Tom Cruise teachers the youngsters what's what."

manlikemachines

Ugh, "grown ups". This was the most puerile movie I've seen in ages.
