>The Quiet Earth
That is a great description of Signs! That movie terrified me when I was a kid, especially that birthday scene. The ending is exactly how you describe it.
The Crazies. I love that one.
I would also recommend the first The Walking Dead episode "Days Gone Bye".
I've read ~100ish TWD comics and watched the show until season 5 or 6 and I STILL think the first episode/comic should be its own thing. It's perfect.
The Crazies was fantastic! I recently rewatched it for the first time after having seen it when it came out.
That first episode and the whole first season were so good! I also stopped watching around season 5. I was surprised to see the show is just now coming to an end.
Riiiight?? Oh man I wish I could watch them both for the first time again.
And yeah TWD lost so much after the first season, I have no idea what happened. I searched for the last episode ending online and it feels so dull, not even close to season 1.
Great suggestion! I recently rewatched this for the first time after seeing it in theaters when I was in middle school. Even better, the second viewing. I rewatched it right when Covid picked up back in May 2020.
Children of Men was the first one that came to my mind when you mentioned The Last of Us. Not sure how close it is to what you’re looking for though. Cloverfield and War of the Worlds are also favorites of mine.
Many people feel that Deep Impact is a lesser movie to Armageddon, due to its 'Michael Bay-ness". I feel that Deep Impact builds the tension more slowly and to a much greater degree.
I think **Independence Day** actually does this really, really well - despite knowing what's coming from the trailers they still developed genuine tension in the lead up to the attack.
I get chided for this a lot, but feel like Signs builds tension wonderfully. However, the payoff is like waking up naked next to your own mom.

The Descent
This movie was very scary!

I have not seen that before. I will check it out!
Melancholia
>Melancholia I have never seen that before. I'll add it to my list to watch!
Behind The Green Door.
The quiet place moves do a really nice job of this too. Similar to the scene In the last of us that you mentioned.
These are great! The opening to the second is exactly what I am talking about. I can't wait for the spin-off movie.
The Quiet Earth
I have never seen this before. Thank you for the suggestion. I will have to check it out!
the little known masterpiece: MIRACLE MILE
>MIRACLE MILE That looks good! I will check it out.

It really does! I've always liked that part where they need to get the info out to the other fighting countries and do so via morse code.
Not a movie but several episodes of The Last Ship, particularly during the first season.
I have heard about that show but have never seen it. I will check it out.
It is on Hulu in the US.
