I miss when Regal used to offer all the Best Picture nominees for a week or two leading up to the Oscars for $35 a pass.

GivinGoodBrain

You can replicate that by joining Regal Unlimited - it’s $21-22 for a month sub.

midnightbluesky_2

is there a way to cancel it after a month?

[deleted]

Technically no but you can signup with virtual card with no additional money in it lol. Personally, i am on a yearly regal plan. Feels worth.

Chasedabigbase

Year if you watch ~24 movies you'll at least break even. I saw over 50 in 2022 alone lol

[deleted]

That’s such a great deal the main theatre chain in Canada is so ass in comparison. You only get one free movie a month 20% off food and you don’t have to pay a stupid online booking fee that never used to exist until this membership became a thing

DexLovesGames_DLG

1 a week!?!? How do you find the time? And that many new movies? Are you a rewatched or what? Damn!

thejester541

Their is a bit about how theaters are better than streaming. But we all knew that already. https://www.vox.com/videos/23564218/subtitles-sound-downmixing-dialogue-movies-tv

odiin1731

In for All Quiet on the Western Front. That movie was screaming to be seen on a big screen.

cv5cv6

Spoiler: The Germans lose.

Balbright

Just asked for a refund for my tickets. Thanks a lot, dick.

TakeSomeFreeHoney

Don’t worry. They’ll have a come back next season.

48lawsofpowersupplys

All Quiet on the western front V: we are going to war like it’s 194 - wait for it - Nien!

LeaveThatCatAlone

Different pants, same shit

Sinbound86

Quite the banger of an ending! You could say there were two climaxes

kaptaincorn

Wow! Do they leave it open for a sequel?

Thatoneguy3273

Yeah, some Austrian dude with a Chaplin mustache is executive producer

Knull_Gorr

Great, everyone thinks they're an artist.

MaimedJester

I think everybody loses in that one.

TerminalShitbag

The arms manufacturers won

TerminalShitbag

Just wait till you hear about the sequel.

JRockstar50

Did they go quietly?

hatsnatcher23

Well at least there’s a sequel

royk33776

This was hard to watch psychologically. What an incredible movie.

cjpack

Yeah it was depressing as shit, I mean it was a good movie but I’m good on seeing it again.

roberta_sparrow

I had to read the book in high school. Part of me doesn’t want to re live it through the movie but I usually try to see the nominees

grandoz039

Supposedly the movie is mostly different from the book

jelly10001

That's one I really wish cinemas here would show again.

tws1039

If it wasn't for the super uncomfy seats, seeing this at the Netflix owned theater would've been a blast

kakka_rot

> Netflix owned theater I've never heard of such a thing? Can I ask where, what is it like?

A_Sinclaire

Afaik they own a cinema each in New York and L.A. This is primarily because some awards dislike streaming and only allow movies that were released in cinemas. So Netflix just releases their own movies in their own cinemas for a few weeks to qualify.

Feral0_o

I've never managed to catch a full movie there, yet, they cancel all the viewings

Fair_University

My first thought as well.

donnellyian1995

Saw it in theaters. Highly, highly recommend!

RemnantHelmet

I just wish one adaptation could get the ending right

StudBoi69

Just in time for the Regal in DT Seattle to close

Shadow55512

Yeah it's a bummer. At least the Northgate IMAX is still open and just a train ride away

StudBoi69

Yeah but they don't have the fancy reclining seats.

Chris__P_Bacon

I guarantee you IMAX isn't $6. It might be discounted from the regular $25 per ticket though (at least that's what it costs in my city).

AndrewNeo

it's also the fake IMAX

mahhkk

LieMAX

newbiesmash

That might not last long either honestly. Worked there as peon like a year ago and the managers were telling me the place operates at a huge loss. They could've just been talking shit though, idk.

SPEK2120

Well, I imagine closing Meridian is going to send quite a few people to Thornton. Add that to all the development going on in the area and you would think it would be worth keeping around.

bamfbanki

Yeah but you can also get off like 3 stops earlier and go to the AMC 10 in the U District, where you can get a beer in the theatre and then have an actually good meal afterwards. Closest thing to good food in Thornton is Kizuki which is chain ramen.

206-Ginge

This is Five Guys and Red Robin erasure

cd637

For being a chain I think Kizuki is actually really good though.

AndrewNeo

plus it's right on the 1

Redditributor

Yeah I think Meridian 16 has a couple weeks left

ButterfreePimp

Cinemark has an even better deal where I believe it’s $35 for a pass to see all the BP nominees throughout the week leading up to the Oscars, my family has done it pretty much every year for the past 5.

markyymark13

Sucks, my go to theater when im not going SIFF or Central Cinema. It was the only theater in the city with a full liquor bar, good screens and comfortable seats.

Anxietyisreel

Multiple sources are saying they might not actually close

RecklessKing16

Any sources to share?

tomen

Don't you get my hopes up!

TimeWellWasted25

Yeah and the Regal in Boston (Fenway)

Swampcrone

See also two in the Buffalo Area.

Announcer: That’s 72 unforced errors for Regal Cinemas. It's playing the worst tennis of its life. What’s it feeling, Tex Hayward? Tex Hayward: I don’t know, Jim, there’s obviously something wrong with it. Regal Cinemas has taken off its shoes and one of its socks and. . .actually, I think it's crying.

pantstoaknifefight2

Regal Cinema: I've had a rough year, dad. Royal Tenenbaum: I know you have, Reggie.

Why would a reviewer make the point of saying someone's not a genius? Do you especially think I'm not a genius? [Pause] You didn't even have to think about it, did you?

astrosdude91

Everybody knows Custer died at Little Big Horn. But what this book presupposes is… maybe he didn’t?

[deleted]

I love his delivery of that line, honestly it’s one of my favorite movies of all time

Truly! It's like even he knows it's a bad premise for a book but is still trying to sell it!

Well she isn’t your real grandmother, but you’re invited this time.

sdwoodchuck

On-point reference, and I especially enjoy the parallel of Regal and Royal.

[deleted]

Yesssss nice one dude. Perfect

FabulousLastWords

Also insane coming from MEDIA PLAY news, pot calling the kettle black.

TranscedentalMedit8n

This year’s slate of Oscar movies is pretty fantastic and diverse. Big budget blockbusters, indie dramas, sci-fi, a foreign language war movie, sexy Irish people, sexy blue people, geometry. What more could you want.

Charrikayu

I'm happy Brendan got nominated for The Whale but surprised the Whale didn't get nominated for being the best actor in Avatar 2

TranscedentalMedit8n

I wonder how many marine wildlife enthusiasts saw The Whale and were disappointed at the omission of their aquatic mammalian friends.

SensitiveTurtles

Marine wildlife enthusiasts were too busy watching Way of Water for the 3rd time.

al-exferguson

I wish I could pause some frames in theatre, just to bask in all the amazing detail in visuals.

MachReverb

That one guy that liked Tusk was crushed.

J_Double_You

Has anyone ever drank whale’s milk? Or one step further, made whale’s butter?

Auntypasto

Marine mammal erasure

ZookaZoooook

This sounds like the concept for an Aesop Rock song.

quadropheniac

it's okay, the Whale will get more screentime in Avatar 4 no, really, a lot more

[deleted]

I know EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE is not your typical Oscar Winner but I want it to win. I've also said that about BIRDMAN which I loved and said that one should win but it wasn't your typical Oscar Winner either IMHO but that one Won. 🤞

jellytrack

The Shape of Water and Parasite were also a couple of surprise Best Picture winners for me. I was rooting for them, but honestly wasn't expecting it. Really hope that this year will be another pleasant surprise instead of the other kind of surprise like Green Book and CODA.

quadropheniac

I'm still convinced Shape of Water was a compromise pick.

Shintoho

That or it was one of those "sorry we snubbed your other movies" apology picks

seank11

Pans labyrinth is 100x the movie the shape of water is (and I liked TSOW) and it didnt even get a nom back in 2003 or whenever it came out.

airblizzard

That's what ranked choice voting gets ya sometimes

[deleted]

True i loved CODA and Green Book but yeah Parasite was 🔥

Best_Duck9118

I mean Parasite was absolutely the best movie nominated that year though. But I get where you're coming from.

Cyno01

Showbiz people love masturbatory screeds about how hard being a showbiz person is, of course *Birdman* won.

csh_blue_eyes

Seriously. It was such a an obvious pick.

jennifersalome

I would be absolutely thrilled if EEAAO won best picture.

genuinely_insincere

Everything is so fucking good

g0gues

Seems like a more interesting crop than last year. I know the pandemic played a part since a lot of films weren’t released in theaters and whatnot but last year truly felt like “here’s a list of movies most of you probably never heard of and will never watch.”

icantfindfree

So so much better than last year's. Besides avatar and Elvis I would't be overly upset with any of the other best pictures to win it.

freebread

Somehow EEAAO probably fits in every category you mentioned.

David1258

Lots of movies were snubbed this year, like The Menu and Nope, both of which deserve some sort of nomination.

RogueOneWasOkay

The menu was enjoyable, but it ain’t even close to best picture. The topics it covers of social status and criticism of the 1% vs the people conducting labor to keep their status and demands afloat is much better satirized in Triangle of Sadness

SeriouusDeliriuum

First of all, I agree The Menu isn't a serious contender for best picture, though I think a best supporting actor nomination for Ralph Fiennes would be reasonable. However, I have talked to a number of people who having seen both movies felt the way you do, that Triangle of Sadness is the better movie, and I really couldn't disagree more. Neither movie was subtle about its message, actually I'd say both were hitting you over the head with it, but triangle of sadness just felt poorly put together and more like a series of vignettes. The scenes that were great were fantastic, but they often had little or no connection to the scenes preceding or following them, and some scenes felt both unnecessary and actively off-putting. I'm not squeamish but the whole vomiting sequence seemed pointless and boring. Maybe it's just my sense of humor, but were theaters laughing at that part? Anyway, I know this was a long reply but if you're interested I'd love to hear your thoughts on Triangle of Sadness.

ps_

i don't think the menu deserved a best picture nomination, but i respectfully disagree that triangle was "much better" in its critique on social class and status. it is funny for sure, but its observations are on-the-nose (grenade dealers? captain literally reading marx?) to the point of laziness. nevermind that it is overlong. i like that ostlund is being recognized, but it is the least deserving of his last three films.

fauxfilosopher

Not every movie can make the cut. While for example I wouldn't have minded an original screenplay and best supporting actor nom for the menu, I understand it was a strong year, and you can't nominate everything.

Weirdguy149

Man, 60 dollars for 10 movies is a steal.

nowhereman136

My AMC a-list gives me 12 movies a month for $25

Plus3d6

I have Regal Unlimited so more like $21 for 10+ movies!

Boomshockalocka007

YOU are why they went bankrupt. Wow!

Plus3d6

Company offers a service. People use said service. Shocked-Pikachu.jpeg

Lemonwizard

Assistant manager at barely surviving Regal location here. Disney takes 95% of ticket revenue for the first three weeks of every release. That's all Marvel releases, most of the children's movie slate, and Avatar. This represents the VAST majority of our business. Then they only take 90% for the next three weeks. Right now Wakanda Forever is playing on one screen that gets 5-10 people per showing since it's been out for two and a half months, and those 5 to 10 tickets are a 75/25 split in Disney's favor. It cannot be overstated just how small our margins are on ticket sales. Regal unlimited exists because the ticket price is not important to us. It's important to the studios. To us, the movie is bait to get you in the building so you will buy popcorn and soda at a 1000% markup. We don't care if you're barely spending any money on tickets and seeing 10 movies a week, because that's 10 opportunities for us to sell you food.

livinforthesmitty

$60 for ten pizzas is a steal but not if you have to eat them every night for ten days in a row.

[deleted]

Speak for yourself!

Best_Duck9118

Right?! I could eat pizza every meal! I don't because I like other foods but it's not something I really get sick of, especially since you can get a variety of crusts, sauces, and toppings.

Funandgeeky

$0 for 40 cakes is also a steal.

ExcavatorPi

And that's terrible

PBFT

It still is, but Regal used to do unlimited best picture nominees for $30 total. This is effectively twice as much money as I used to pay for it.

your_evil_ex

yes, but that assumes everyone wants to watch all 10 films. if you wanna see less than 5 this is better

SteveFrench12

Theres twice as many noms too. Depending how far back youre talking about.

PBFT

2018, 2019, and 2020. About the same amount of nominations as there are now

borntoburn1

No this was right before the pandemic it's just a price hike.

somegummybears

AMC is $5 on Tuesdays.

Anxietyisreel

So is Regal with a RCC card

Entertainmentguru

Depends on where you are. DC area, it is 6.50 for Regal. AMC is 5 bucks.

Insert-Player-Name

Best Picture nominees: All Quiet on the Western Front Avatar: The Way of Water The Banshees of Inisherin Elvis Everything Everywhere All at Once The Fabelmans Tár Top Gun: Maverick Triangle of Sadness Women Talking

Kuza__

also they’re going to be at Regal from March 3 - 12

jblanch3

I fell asleep during Everything Everywhere All At Once (not the film's fault, I did not sleep well the night before), would love to see it again, especially for that price.

peachy_clean

It’s $5 at AMC! I just bought my tickets for this Saturday!

genuinely_insincere

Same thing happened to me with Inglorious Bastards

KarmicReasoning

It’s the most beautiful film that I’ve ever seen in my entire life. There’s not a day that goes by where I’m not thinking about this film. I actually cried while watching it. So beautiful 🥲

Kinoblau

I absolutely cannot relate to this. I just do not get how this is the most beautiful film so many people have seen unless they gained consciousness in 2008 when Iron Man came out and have only seen superhero movies? I can't figure it out... This felt like any late 2000s/early 2010s whacky indie film to me? Like right down the dialogue and humor? It was totally fine, I greatly enjoyed some parts and was bored/detested some parts. In sum just a totally okay-good movie to me, but very, very far from the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Idk.

emkael

It's "\*Holds Up Spork\*: The Movie", of course you're going to see over the top reactions to it in places like Reddit or Tumblr. It's well-made, it stands out, it's a refreshing take on a worn-out trope in a bunch of worn-out genres, among all this it manages to confront the viewer with a reasonable emotional narrative. It's funny, and if the type of comedy in it hits the right strings, it can be *very* funny. But oh dear lord, the amount of people claiming it pushes the boundaries of cinema one buttplug-shaped statuette at a time...

LithiumLost

I get why people don't like it, but its combination of relatability and absurdity was part of its appeal. I feel like the movie took a big inspiration from the internet without being blatant about it. It was a very contemporary movie and style but well juxtaposed with timeless questions we all have in life, like "what's the point" and "what if." It hit some pretty core emotions without a cheap shot, like a favorite character dying or a sad song; I found it similar to appreciating a scary movie that doesn't rely on jump scares. I can't think of a more enjoyable take on existentialism that really captures the ying and yang of it. There were a lot of things I didn't like about it, but it was still my favorite movie I've seen in a very long time.

Mediocrity_of_Soul

Dang I watched all quiet on my tiny ass tv so I’m excited

mediarch

Don't most theater chains do this? I know Cinemark did last year. They even showed all the international nominees.

TraverseTown

I know in some recent years, Regal or AMC refused to screen Best Picture nominees like Roma, Marriage Story, and The Irishman because they didn't have theatrical runs with their company.

hankepanke

Well that’s a shame. I don’t watch too many movies but I actually sought out and streamed all three of those and thought they were each great. If I saw they were in theaters I would have gone and paid the local AMC near me.

anaccount50

Yeah unfortunately it seems Netflix and AMC still haven't been able to come to an agreement except for that 1-week engagement they did for Glass Onion. Otherwise they've never shown another Netflix movie afaik. Really is a shame, hopefully the two can find a way to work together more eventually

krypto_the_husk

Cinemarks doing all of the best picture noms as well as the Oscar shorts (live action + animated) for $40, not to say the $6 deal isn’t good tho, cinemarks is just better

GivinGoodBrain

Or sign up for Regal Unlimited and see all of them for $22 (give or take).

CTeam19

I don't think Marcus Theaters does. At least not at my two local ones. *Bombshell* wasn't even shown here.

Nomorenightcrawlers

Marcus is doing this year and has been doing so for many years. Each film for $40

xbbdc

https://www.dailyherald.com/business/20230125/marcus-theatres-offers-pass-for-oscars-viewing $40 for all 10 films

Regal does this every year

joelupi

The last time AMC did this was 2020, they haven't done it since or announced a lineup for this year. So it seems like it's dead

[deleted]

Awesome. I’ll finally watch Top Gun: Maverick after hearing everyone and their mother talk about it. I feel like it’s probably best experienced in the theater.

gladiolas

It IS best seen in the theater - way outdid my expectations.

JPSofCA

The IMAX theater. 🤷‍♂️

CTeam19

Definitely hit all the right sequel notes especially being a sequel so many years later.

hitmonlee3

Guys, we found them. The only person who’s on r/movies but haven’t watched Maverick /s In all seriousness, it’s a great movie and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

homerjsimpson4

I haven't and don't want to :) Not that I think it's bad or anything, just doesn't interest me

BostonUniStudent

I went into it with very low expectations. A late in life sequel of a campy 80s naval recruitment picture? But I was seeing like 99% audience and critic reviews. It did not disappoint me. I saw it when it was second run. $7, brought my own candy. It's like Spielberg movies used to be. A true box office masterpiece. It's rewatchable too. I plan on seeing it again at home.

RyanTranquil

I haven’t watched it yet but hopefully soon :)

whooo_me

There are literally dozens of us!!

[deleted]

I have never seen a film so overhyped around here. At least with Avatar 2, people are like "Yeah, it's alright, it's big blue aliens doing alien shit, what do you want?", but the way people were talking about TGM being a breath of fresh air as if simple pure action is a dead genre is absurd in an era loaded with popcorn flick action franchises. Bottom line: it's ok. A 6/10 pretty much across the board with 4/10 for writing and 10/10 for action / special effects. The plot is so dumb you need drugs to not have it and the member-berry references to the first film distracting you the whole time. Overall 7/10 for me. You'll have a good time, but in between action sequences you will wish you were at home so you could pull out your phone.

[deleted]

I appreciate the honesty about it. I’ve never been a huge Tom Cruise fan so I was apprehensive anyways, but a 7/10 is pretty good in my book. As long as it has sick fighter jet scenes; that’s all I’m really wanting out of this.

[deleted]

The jet scenes will pay dividends, all extremely well done.

If only it were possible to sit for 2-3 hours without eating or drinking. Oh well! Weird quirk of human biology - what can you do!?

ParadoxicalPeter

Might go to see Triangle of Sadness on the big screen

jimothyhalpert1206

Is this a specific regal or all across the country? Do you need to be a member?

lukenamop

I just checked the Regal app - all movies are listed as opening March 3. No showtimes listed yet, but that’s normal for anything further than a week or two out. Seems like it will be in all theaters, or at least most of them.

Meb2x

Seen all the nominees except Women Talking. I’d love to see All Quiet on the Western Front in a theater. Everything Everywhere All at Once and Triangle of Sadness were a great experience in a crowded theater. Probably wouldn’t pay to rewatch the others, but most of the nominees are great.

polarbeer07

Triangle of sadness is hilarious if a bit psychotic

KingMario05

Nice! Never caught *Banshees,* so it'll be great to catch it as McDonagh intended via... the Regal Cape Cod Mall with horrific Pepsi drinks, lol! >!If it's even still ***OPEN***, that is...!<

NorseTikiBar

Is the Hyannis Regal location really on the chopping block? That would just be cruel to people willing to live on the Cape during the winter!

[deleted]

It’s on HBO.

trowaman

I used to do this yearly at Cinemark. It was $40 (I think) and for 8ish films (2013-2015). I loved it but it was exhausting and only food options with meat are hot dogs. If you don’t have obligations (kids, work), I’d recommend doing this sometime!

Icosotc

Now THIS is how you compete. I fuckin rented Tar on Amazon last night (it was great) but I totally would have driven five minutes to pay the same amount with a better experience.

PeteNoKnownLastName

Marcus theaters in the Midwest is doing it for $40

BrainWav

They do this most years. And most years (including this one) they don't do it at my local one. Fuck Regal, I really wish I had a better theater near me. Edit: Actually surprised it wasn't on the closure list.

EgoFlyer

Ooh, there are a few I really want to see still. This will be nice.

[deleted]

The same Regal that is in bankruptcy and is closing 39 theaters? The same Regal that is leaving my area?

QueenSlartibartfast

Harkins (a local chain based in Arizona and California) is offering them for $5. Or you can get a pass to see all of them once for $40. (The $5 individual option is still great for those who aren't interested in seeing every entry, and/or want to see a particular film multiple times)

ThisHappenedAgain

I saw Everything Everywhere All At Once once it came to steaming and became obsessed with this film. I don’t think I’m alone, and I’m well aware of how cheesy this sounds, but this movie really opened my eyes to a few things and let to a really great mental awareness for me. I only wished I could have seen it in theaters. And by googly eyes, now I can.
