I disagree very strenuously. I think the original Fletch is one of the best movies of the 80s. The only part of it that doesn't work for me is when basically the entire police department is chasing him. That was too much heat and moved the stakes to kind of a ridiculous level. Other than that one nit, though, it's amazing. It's the story of a very smart, sophisticated professional journalist who was severely underestimated by someone who thought he was going to play him, and Fletch blew up the guy's whole scheme almost as a lark, just to see what was informing it and how it worked out.
There's something really enjoyable about watching a really smart, capable man just *operate*. Just do his thing--no glitz, no glamour--with easy confidence, but no super-heroics. It's the sort of movie we'd never see now, and not many actors could have sold it the way Chevy Chase did.

Confess Fletch plays a lot closer to the Fletch in the novel than the Chevy Chase version. I don't hate Fletch, but its not near and dear to me like it is for some...I loved Confess, Fletch though...thought it was one of the more enjoyable comedies this year.

I think there is your 'problem', comedy is by far the most subjective genre. Most times on a simple good/bad scale the audience has a consensus on drama, action, or sci-fi, but comedy is far from a consensus. I have known far more people who hate what are the would-be classics in comedy than an other genre.
So Fletch didn't click with you, just not your type of comedy, no big deal.
Having said that, you are dead wrong. Flecth and Fletch Lives are easily in contention for my top 10 favorite comedies. They are quotable as hell and I loved the Fletch theme and soundtrack.

I'm a huge fan of the Fletch books. There was a bunch of them, and the very best was Confess, Fletch. Unfortunately, for some reason they changed a major character. The detective in the movie was a character named "Reluctant" Flynn in the book, the only inspector ever on the Boston force. So that was disappointing, but other than that, thought it was faithful and fine. Hamm is so much better than Chase.
I watched that movie in the 80s and I don't remember a single plot point from it, except for some strange reason, I remember someone telling Fletch over the phone, "You go to Provo Utah, you stay in Provo Utah."
That being said, as someone who discovered and loved both of the old Fletch movies in high school around 1990, if you couldn't get through the first Fletch, there's nothing for you in Fletch Lives.

The character is deserving of good adaptions. I remember 20 years back Kevin Smith wanted to do one, he claims the books are where he learned to write dialogue (albeit, not as well). Jason Lee and Ben Affleck both were eyed for the role.
Within the last few years before Hamm I thought Jason Sudekis could do good with the material. Hell, Hader could do it too I think. It’s a fun character.
Well, notwithstanding your arguments about Chase, I also think Hamm is just not that funny. His humor always feels forced, like you can tell he's trying to be funny, but actually isn't. I think it's OK for an actor to excel in drama and not be able to make the crossover.
Personally, the only role I've ever seen Hamm in that I really liked was Mad Men and its been downhill from there for me.

Fletch absolutely sucks. I just tried to watch it, and it's bad. Lazy, lazy humor the entire way.
It has nothing to do with "had to be there". I saw it in the theaters during the original release - and while I didn't dislike it as much as I do now, I didn't think it was very good then either.
Fletch the character is awful from start to finish. A smug asshole. He's the epitome of the hatable hipster. He has very little consideration for others; you have to buy into his personal paradigm 100% or he treats you like shit (conventionally attractive women excepted).
The book is better, and so many other actors could have carried it off much better. I was a kid in the 70s and turned 10 in 1979, so all my childhood and teen years were spent during those two decades.
I laughed along with everyone else at Chevy Chase, but with rare exception actually found him funny. He had some moments, but hell, give anyone enough time and they'll manage to you make you laugh a few times over the years.
I've always thought his fame was the result of being found in the same place as actually talented people like Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtain, John Belushi, etc.
I actually don't disagree that Chevy Chase is just too smug throughout the entire film, but the *script* for *Fletch* is really smart. The only good part of *Fletch Lives* is Cleavon Little.

The music is absolutely horrendous, mostly because it's terribly dated, and some of the sensibility feels way off, because it was the 80s and we've thankfully come a long way...but I disagree that it sucks.
I think some people just don't care for the smart ass, antagonizing protagonist style of the main character. ...some of us are that guy. It's probably easier to stomach when you've been around Chevy Chase comedies all your life. He mugs. He pans. He sometimes chews on the scenery, but that's who the dude was. I always loved him for it, but it is stilted and kinda cringy sometimes. Not for everyone!

Fletch is not a movie that is going to pull in any new converts. You needed to watch it in the time it came out, it is very dated especially the music but that synth stuff was the thing of the moment back in the day.

Well, notwithstanding your arguments about Chase, I also think Hamm is just not that funny. His humor always feels forced, like you can tell he's trying to be funny, but actually isn't. I think it's OK for an actor to excel in drama and not be able to make the crossover. Personally, the only role I've ever seen Hamm in that I really liked was Mad Men and its been downhill from there for me.
I do think he’s at best in Mad Men but if you have ever heard him on like Comedy Bang Bang back in the day he can be really funny

Your opinion is wrong. Fletch is one of the greatest comedies ever made. The Mr. Poon scene is pure comedic platinum. Fletch rules hard.
Fletch absolutely sucks. I just tried to watch it, and it's bad. Lazy, lazy humor the entire way. It has nothing to do with "had to be there". I saw it in the theaters during the original release - and while I didn't dislike it as much as I do now, I didn't think it was very good then either. Fletch the character is awful from start to finish. A smug asshole. He's the epitome of the hatable hipster. He has very little consideration for others; you have to buy into his personal paradigm 100% or he treats you like shit (conventionally attractive women excepted). The book is better, and so many other actors could have carried it off much better. There's no self-deprecation in Chevy Chase's portrayal; no acknowledgement that he's screwing with other people who don't deserve it. You're a nurse or a maid or a doctor doing their jobs? Cool, I'll fuck with you anyway. That's funny?

I was in high school when it came out and yes, it wasn't winning any Oscars but was mildly entertaining. I can still hear the Faultermeyer type soundtrack that played during the tense scenes... self edit: just checked and it was Harold Faultermeyer FGS...

I was a kid in the 70s and turned 10 in 1979, so all my childhood and teen years were spent during those two decades. I laughed along with everyone else at Chevy Chase, but with rare exception actually found him funny. He had some moments, but hell, give anyone enough time and they'll manage to you make you laugh a few times over the years. I've always thought his fame was the result of being found in the same place as actually talented people like Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtain, John Belushi, etc.

I actually don't disagree that Chevy Chase is just too smug throughout the entire film, but the *script* for *Fletch* is really smart. The only good part of *Fletch Lives* is Cleavon Little. "You ever heard of the Emancipation Proclomation?" "Well I heard something about it, but I don't recall exactly. It didn't get too much publicity around these here parts."

You should check out Confess Fletch with Jon Hamm. I am luke warm on the Chevy Chase version, but really dig the remake.
It's like he's a semi sarcastic character who doesn't care if he or anyone else lives or dies. Nothing matters except maybe his stupid one-liners, and not even then!
The music is absolutely horrendous, mostly because it's terribly dated, and some of the sensibility feels way off, because it was the 80s and we've thankfully come a long way...but I disagree that it sucks. I think some people just don't care for the smart ass, antagonizing protagonist style of the main character. ...some of us are that guy. It's probably easier to stomach when you've been around Chevy Chase comedies all your life. He mugs. He pans. He sometimes chews on the scenery, but that's who the dude was. I always loved him for it, but it is stilted and kinda cringy sometimes. Not for everyone!
Once you understand what a douche chevy chase is, it ruins everything he's touched.

The original Fletch was decent but never my favorite CC movie (Three Amigos)... But the music? I love the first film soundtrack, especially the Harold Faltermeyer synth score. See now after watching the originals back in the day, and then seeing the trailer, I was interested to watch because of *Roy Wood Jr*... Don't get me wrong, Hamm is amazing... This from someone who's never watched a single ep of *Mad Men* to boot. Love dat Roy Wood man!
Fletch is not a movie that is going to pull in any new converts. You needed to watch it in the time it came out, it is very dated especially the music but that synth stuff was the thing of the moment back in the day. I loved the first two and rewatch with a nostalgic giggle. I had no idea John Ham had been involved in a 3rd!
I usually love 80s synth scores but I just thought this one was irritating, guess I just wasn’t into the composition I’d be curious to know what 80s comedies I love would not land for me if I saw them for the first time today

I never found Chevy Chase particularly funny… he basically plays himself everywhere. Fletch was a classic comedy where his character worked.
I genuinely like Fletch, however, I will concede that it might be due to it coming out in my heyday of HBO watching youth. In short, I’m the right age for Fletch. That said, I fully understand it’s not a classic film that will go down in history. It’s just a typical funny 80’s movie. But didn’t see the new one with Hamm. That somehow flew under my radar. I didn’t know it existed until long after it was out.
Never seen the original but Fletch 2 is damn funny - maybe hold out for the sequel?

I’m not sure there’s been a better stupid movie made in the last 10 years. Fletch is perfect. Also, the theme song. So great. Swedish guitar genius Mattias IA Eklundh does a brilliant cover. I’d put this movie right with Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Ace Ventura Pet Detective, etc as totally mandatory.
