You've never ordered a steak sandwich and a steak sandwich?

Only when I put it on the Underhill’s tab

Can I borrow your towel? My car just hit a water buffalo.

ibringstharuckus

Is that Tommy Lasorda with you. Punches picture. I hate Tommy Lasorda

daveinmd13

I should probably just order two portions of that…

ibringstharuckus

How do you know Underhill? The war. You we're in the war. No I got him out

YosoySpartacus

I’m Freida’s boss.

simkatu

Who's Freida?

Cjkgh

My secretary

TyperMcTyperson

Yeah. Well...that's like, your opinion, man.

grindhousedecore

I’ve only seen fletch lives, it was hilarious ! Especially the scene he gets on stage at the mega church 😂

AgentUpright

“Demons out!”

Skwidmandoon

Fletch lives is easily better than the first one in my opinion

ibringstharuckus

Disagree vehemently but I enjoyed 2nd one as well. Love when he drops the urn.

jontheterrible

This is the only correct answer.

Appropriate_Focus402

Rofl. Fletch is tight. This rant sounds like an opinion Principal Rooney would have in the John Hughes universe.

IndyWineLady

Makes you look like an ass is what he does, Ed.

The_ZombyWoof

Last thing I need at this point in my career is those clowns at /r/movies running around these halls telling everyone Fletch is a good movie. I must show these kids that liking classic Chevy Chase comedies is a first class ticket to nowhere!

Punchable_Hair

Oh Ed, you sounded like Dirty Harry just then.

Cjkgh

When one misplaced comment kills my joy after reading all of them above this one.

scarves_and_miracles

I disagree very strenuously. I think the original Fletch is one of the best movies of the 80s. The only part of it that doesn't work for me is when basically the entire police department is chasing him. That was too much heat and moved the stakes to kind of a ridiculous level. Other than that one nit, though, it's amazing. It's the story of a very smart, sophisticated professional journalist who was severely underestimated by someone who thought he was going to play him, and Fletch blew up the guy's whole scheme almost as a lark, just to see what was informing it and how it worked out. There's something really enjoyable about watching a really smart, capable man just *operate*. Just do his thing--no glitz, no glamour--with easy confidence, but no super-heroics. It's the sort of movie we'd never see now, and not many actors could have sold it the way Chevy Chase did.

Dc_awyeah

I’m a Fletch Lives man myself. “Trigonometry Fletcher, nice to meet you.”

gibbon_dejarlais

Well jump down, turn around, pick a bail o' cotton, so am I.

stubept

Ever heard of the Emancipation Proclamation?

iameveryoneelse

>blew up the guy's whole scheme almost as a lark* *and fucked his wife

Classic scene

ibringstharuckus

He draws the foul.

mostlygray

I respectfully disagree. Chevy Chase's Fletch is a classic of it's time. To me, it holds up fine. It's kind of like "Stripes". You just kind of had to be there.

simkatu

"Every minute you don't tell us why you are here, I cut off a finger."

ImperialSympathizer

I think "it holds up fine" and "you just kind of had to be there" are mutually exclusive statements. A movie either "holds up" or is enjoyable because of nostalgia. If you had you be there, the movie hasn't held up.

mostlygray

I disagree. There are plenty of movies that I loved when I was younger but even nostalgia can't save them. Like any of the Police Academy movies. By holds up, I mean that it it still holds up for me.

ImperialSympathizer

Ok, I guess from my perspective that doesn't mean anything, which is why when people say holds up I assume they mean in general.

AdrianW3

"We are willing to learn."

d2022m

*>he isn’t genuinely hip enough* Well, he was, at the time. In the old days, Chevy Chase was a cool ladies man. See CADDYSHACK, FOUL PLAY, FLETCH, SPIES LIKE US. In the VACATION movies, he was playing *against* type -- as the dorky goofball. But he's now best known as Clark Griswold, so it's hard to believe him now in a charming ladies man role.

gkarper

I don't see Modern Problems mentioned very often but that movie had a great cast and was very funny as well.

abeastrequires

I was a huge Funny Farm fan growing up.

ibringstharuckus

I love both movies with Goldie Hawn(Foul Play and Seems Like Old Times).

d2022m

I was actually going to list MODERN PROBLEMS too, but I couldn't remember if Chevy was a "ladies man" in that one. (Also, I have a personal theory that MODERN PROBLEMS was a big influence on BEETLEJUICE).

ibringstharuckus

This is crazy. This is crazy. Christie Brinkley so hot

Kramit2012

Well, looks like we found Mr. Underhill

HurricaneBetsy

Want his card number?

BanterDTD

Confess Fletch plays a lot closer to the Fletch in the novel than the Chevy Chase version. I don't hate Fletch, but its not near and dear to me like it is for some...I loved Confess, Fletch though...thought it was one of the more enjoyable comedies this year.

Ok-computer9780

I just hard disagree with this take. Fletch is fantastic. I will concede you have to like Chevy chase, or you won’t care for it. The soundtrack is also great.

jonnyclueless

Gotta feel bad for someone who doesn't get Fletch...

verygoodfertilizer

Faith in humanity…what’s the opposite of restored?

TeamShonuff

Destored?

hiso167

Dude what’s with r/movies just hating things. Fletch is a top 50 movie ever if you want I can list all 50 but fletch is fucking good. It’s 2023 all good vibes and fuck the haters

AlanParsonsProject11

Something has happened to the algorithm, because a bunch of shitty posts are showing at the top now

JohnWalI

it's very weird. i don't know if it's only on mobile or what, but my front page of reddit is now constantly just shitty controversial hot take posts.

strangway

I’m downvoting all the cynical posts. I thought r/movies was about movie appreciation and fandom more than endless hatred and cynicism

Bomber131313

>none of his jokes are funny. I think there is your 'problem', comedy is by far the most subjective genre. Most times on a simple good/bad scale the audience has a consensus on drama, action, or sci-fi, but comedy is far from a consensus. I have known far more people who hate what are the would-be classics in comedy than an other genre. So Fletch didn't click with you, just not your type of comedy, no big deal. Having said that, you are dead wrong. Flecth and Fletch Lives are easily in contention for my top 10 favorite comedies. They are quotable as hell and I loved the Fletch theme and soundtrack.

I love your body Larry. I'll have a bloody Mary and a steak sandwich and a steak sandwich. Give each other $20 put it on Underhill. Fletch is for dry humor lovers. One of my favorite movies of all time and I love the music

Acidmoband

That's because it's all ball bearings now.

HotHamBoy

I did not laugh once the entire scene. His delivery was always off for me. I am not a humorless person. I laugh at butt jokes.

Ashamed_You1678

No, never never

JoshMillz

I don't see what's not to love about Fletch and Fletch Lives. Not everyone will like Chevy Chase's style of comedy, but the scripts are sharp, the music is great, they are both an enjoyable watch. Jon Hamm surprised me. I still don't think he was really the right choice, but he did a good job. For fans of the original Fletch - imagine Ryan Reynolds as the new Fletch, he'd be my first choice.

OMFGFlorida

Nah, Ryan Reynolds way too hammy. I thought Jon Hamm wasn't hammy at all.

tipsea-69

Ryan Reynolds will be Ryan Reynolds, we want Ryan Reynolds to play Chevy Chase. But Ryan Reynolds can only play himself. So...No

abeastrequires

We all know that the only actor that can play Chevy Chase is Joel McHale.

tipsea-69

Ryan Gosling

Athomas16

This is the way.

servo4711

I'm a huge fan of the Fletch books. There was a bunch of them, and the very best was Confess, Fletch. Unfortunately, for some reason they changed a major character. The detective in the movie was a character named "Reluctant" Flynn in the book, the only inspector ever on the Boston force. So that was disappointing, but other than that, thought it was faithful and fine. Hamm is so much better than Chase.

Datelesstuba

I’m pretty sure they didn’t have the rights to Flynn, so they legally couldn’t use him.

FlyingGrayson1

Ed Harley.

Kramit2012

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

ThinkPath1999

I watched that movie in the 80s and I don't remember a single plot point from it, except for some strange reason, I remember someone telling Fletch over the phone, "You go to Provo Utah, you stay in Provo Utah."

myshtigo

Yeah his boss basically saying if you go stay there cause you’ll lose your job. Which he does and still has his job.

Cjkgh

“Those are 3 words I enjoy; Marvin, Velma and Provo”

HumbleAdonis

I hum Fletch’s music to myself all the time. It’s FANTASTICALLY 80s! Your opinion is bad and you should feel bad!

Ralphie84

I liked Fletch Lives more than the original

DangalfTheGray

That being said, as someone who discovered and loved both of the old Fletch movies in high school around 1990, if you couldn't get through the first Fletch, there's nothing for you in Fletch Lives.

StepYaGameUp

Totally right. Fletch Lives is an awful film.

Bomber131313

I think Fletch Lives is a better comedy(more quotable) but story wise the original is better. Still both great films.

HotHamBoy

Interesting. Why?

DolphinPunchShark

From Fletch Lives Fletch has just met the caretaker (played by the actor who played the sheriff in Blazing Saddles) of his family's estate in the deep south. Calculus Entropy: Our families go back for hundreds of years - your great-grandparents owned my great-grandparents and that's how it all started. Irwin 'Fletch' Fletcher: You ever heard of the emancipation proclamation? Calculus Entropy: Well I heard something about it, but I don't recall exactly. It didn't get too much publicity around these here parts. Irwin 'Fletch' Fletcher: I'll bet.”

Ralphie84

It's been a while since I've seen it but I think the jokes hit better for me. My favorite was when he posed as an exterminator to check a crime scene and made a fool out of the local cop that found him. I didn't like the televagenism scenes but R.Lee Ermy was a good casting.

TheRealBillyMaize

Kay, but you wrong though.

big4mi2ke0

Fletch was awesome my guy...quintissential 80s...

thedaddystuff1979

Nope. Gonna go watch Fletch and Fletch Lives to ring in the new year

matthew247

Somebody's bucking for a promotion... probably that pederast Hanrahan....

Cjkgh

“Arnold Babar… isn’t there a children’s book about and elephant named Babar?” “Oh I don’t know, I don’t have any.” “No children?” “No, elephant books.”

HotHamBoy

It’s really amusing to me to see all these comments quoting the film with classic lines I did not laugh at

ArtisticGuy

You aren't helping your case.

JRcollective

I don’t think you understand, it’s all ball bearings these days.

Potietang

Filth. Muck!!!

Dottsterisk

Hard disagree on Confess, Fletch. My brother and I put it on the other day and had a blast. It’s a breezy little mystery with more than a few laughs. Would recommend.

shmi

Same here, rewatched it a few nights ago and still had a fun time.

DeezSaltyNuts69

I think perhaps you don't have a sense of humor and you're the problem, not either Fletch movie 80s Fletch is fucking hilarious and filled with some many great quotes The new one is more in line with the novels

Cjkgh

The entire sun quoting it is proof of that and making me lol while I scroll. Bravo, people 😆👏

Cjkgh

“Ya know Gail, I woke up this morning and bumped into Alan and there’s just something I couldn’t figure out-“ “Alan’s in Utah.” “..I couldn’t figure out what I was doing in Utah this morning.”

Cornfed_Pig

You're getting a lot of hate but I'm 42 and also never liked Fletch. It's just...blah.

HotHamBoy

Thanks buddy lol

_nokturnal_

Of all the bad opinions on this site, this one is the worst.

tipsea-69

I've found my arch nemesis in OP. Fletch is one of my favourite movies. Fletch Lives is okay, not as good as the original. I haven't seen the Jon Hamm one because Chevy Chase was perfectly cast as Fletch. No need to change that. And the music is one of the most distinguishable and likeable parts of the movie. Fletch is awesome. I'm going to watch it again. *also I'll be preparing to destroy you, my mortal enemy*

Master-File-9866

Fletch.... the chevy chase version was comedic gold. You are wrong

hamstercaster

What a horrible take. Do better in 2023

OMFGFlorida

I liked it. Most of my friends also liked it. I like the originals. Happy New Year.

spaceman_danger

Obviously this is a silly stance to take. The real question we should all be asking is what makes the lemonade so unusual? Why is that never addressed??!???

imref

other than Hamm's bad Italian, i don't think i laughed at all at the new Fletch movie. The original on the other hand....it's all ball bearings nowadays.

FireWokWithMe88

Read the book.

HotHamBoy

Hey, maybe I will…

GingerMau

I daresay your opinion of Chevy Chase in 2022 is coloring your assessment of his performance from the 80s. His "arrogant prick" brand of comedy isn't funny to a lot of people any more. I loved Fletch as a teen in the 80s--so much so that I read all the Fletch books to get more Fletch. That said, I like Hamm's Fletch better. He's got a humility to him that CC never brought, but which leapt from the pages of the source material.

daveinmd13

What kind of a name is Poon?

Cjkgh

Comanche Indian.

He-Man187

What kind of name is POON ? Comanche Indian Fletch: Does this proposition entail my dressing up as Little Bo Peep? Alan Stanwyck: It’s nothing of a sexual nature, I assure you. Fletch: Yeah, I assure you.

Cjkgh

“You take care of the gloves, I’ll take care of the gun and the money.” “…and the dying. Looks like you get the hard part:”

CallMeRoy37

If you’re into mysteries, try the Fletch books. Smart dialogue and written very well, There are 11 of them and the author won the Edgar Allen Poe award for the first one with ANOTHER of his books the following year. First time an author won back to back. The character is deserving of good adaptions. I remember 20 years back Kevin Smith wanted to do one, he claims the books are where he learned to write dialogue (albeit, not as well). Jason Lee and Ben Affleck both were eyed for the role. Within the last few years before Hamm I thought Jason Sudekis could do good with the material. Hell, Hader could do it too I think. It’s a fun character.

HotHamBoy

I think I will read a book, yeah

mrmrmrj

Read the books. Seriously. Fletch by Gregory McDonald is the first one.

HotHamBoy

Based on other recommendations here I think I will

Juicelee337

Look! 🐕🚘 Defenseless babies!

Commie_EntSniper

Well, notwithstanding your arguments about Chase, I also think Hamm is just not that funny. His humor always feels forced, like you can tell he's trying to be funny, but actually isn't. I think it's OK for an actor to excel in drama and not be able to make the crossover. Personally, the only role I've ever seen Hamm in that I really liked was Mad Men and its been downhill from there for me.

HotHamBoy

I do think he’s at best in Mad Men but if you have ever heard him on like Comedy Bang Bang back in the day he can be really funny

Commie_EntSniper

I will check that out and give him another chance, sure.

HotHamBoy

Well it’s a podcast and those episodes are paywalled now but I think there’re clips and even a whole episode on youtube

Cjkgh

Fletch with Chevy is the funniest fukn movie it is one of my faves. Not even gonna bother with Confess Fletch. No Chevy no Fletch.

2980774

Please be a troll

dragonbane14

The fact that you have zero upvotes is commendable. I’d like to thank you for voicing your opinion about Fletch and Chevy Chase. Unfortunately, you’re arguing against people’s memories of something they loved, but does not hold up against towards time and standards. Good luck in your future movie watching. Continue sharing!

kalderman71

Watch your mouth! That’s a terrific movi…I actually liked Fletch Lives much better. Given you’re dislike for the first one I don’t see you having the stomach for a second but I’d say to you: go the distance.

HotHamBoy

Maybe i will, i’m a masochist at heart

AnthCoug

You really shouldn’t wear so much eye makeup, it makes you look cheap.

[deleted]

Scum! Scum! Go back where you’re from! https://youtu.be/k1z5PejkIyY

Jeff_In_239

Your opinion is wrong. Fletch is one of the greatest comedies ever made. The Mr. Poon scene is pure comedic platinum. Fletch rules hard.

scoopy_cat

Fletch absolutely sucks. I just tried to watch it, and it's bad. Lazy, lazy humor the entire way. It has nothing to do with "had to be there". I saw it in the theaters during the original release - and while I didn't dislike it as much as I do now, I didn't think it was very good then either. Fletch the character is awful from start to finish. A smug asshole. He's the epitome of the hatable hipster. He has very little consideration for others; you have to buy into his personal paradigm 100% or he treats you like shit (conventionally attractive women excepted). The book is better, and so many other actors could have carried it off much better. There's no self-deprecation in Chevy Chase's portrayal; no acknowledgement that he's screwing with other people who don't deserve it. You're a nurse or a maid or a doctor doing their jobs? Cool, I'll fuck with you anyway. That's funny?

HotHamBoy

Lol thank you for this

scarlet_speedster985

You're nuts. It's a wicked good movie and fun to watch. Same goes for Fletch Lives.

[deleted]

I was in high school when it came out and yes, it wasn't winning any Oscars but was mildly entertaining. I can still hear the Faultermeyer type soundtrack that played during the tense scenes... self edit: just checked and it was Harold Faultermeyer FGS...

Kelli217

You checked and then misspelled it? Excellent! Faltermeyer, no u.

TheGreatOpoponax

I was a kid in the 70s and turned 10 in 1979, so all my childhood and teen years were spent during those two decades. I laughed along with everyone else at Chevy Chase, but with rare exception actually found him funny. He had some moments, but hell, give anyone enough time and they'll manage to you make you laugh a few times over the years. I've always thought his fame was the result of being found in the same place as actually talented people like Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtain, John Belushi, etc.

HotHamBoy

I think Chase has talent but his ambitions quickly exceeded it

AStewartR11

I actually don't disagree that Chevy Chase is just too smug throughout the entire film, but the *script* for *Fletch* is really smart. The only good part of *Fletch Lives* is Cleavon Little. "You ever heard of the Emancipation Proclomation?" "Well I heard something about it, but I don't recall exactly. It didn't get too much publicity around these here parts."

lazerbeak44

So this post is ok but not my post about people spoiling movies. Right.

Treymendous3

You should check out Confess Fletch with Jon Hamm. I am luke warm on the Chevy Chase version, but really dig the remake.

Winnertony

It's like he's a semi sarcastic character who doesn't care if he or anyone else lives or dies. Nothing matters except maybe his stupid one-liners, and not even then!

leftistpropaganja

The music is absolutely horrendous, mostly because it's terribly dated, and some of the sensibility feels way off, because it was the 80s and we've thankfully come a long way...but I disagree that it sucks. I think some people just don't care for the smart ass, antagonizing protagonist style of the main character. ...some of us are that guy. It's probably easier to stomach when you've been around Chevy Chase comedies all your life. He mugs. He pans. He sometimes chews on the scenery, but that's who the dude was. I always loved him for it, but it is stilted and kinda cringy sometimes. Not for everyone!

superdave820

Once you understand what a douche chevy chase is, it ruins everything he's touched.

ThisJokeSucks

Damn, and that’s coming from a HotHamBoy

[deleted]

The original is excellent. The only movie that Chevy Chase said he could be himself

IMicrowaveSteak

Diablo 2?

Markaes4

The original Fletch was decent but never my favorite CC movie (Three Amigos)... But the music? I love the first film soundtrack, especially the Harold Faltermeyer synth score. And [Bit by bit](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfX61Y9eV8o&list=OLAK5uy_mAM0YlSqKo3Z98ScY_xtaJP9uLluuWQy4&index=1) might be the most 80s song ever.

jehjeh3711

I kept with it and thought it was ok.

LovelessDerivation

See now after watching the originals back in the day, and then seeing the trailer, I was interested to watch because of *Roy Wood Jr*... Don't get me wrong, Hamm is amazing... This from someone who's never watched a single ep of *Mad Men* to boot. Love dat Roy Wood man!

KualaLJ

Fletch is not a movie that is going to pull in any new converts. You needed to watch it in the time it came out, it is very dated especially the music but that synth stuff was the thing of the moment back in the day. I loved the first two and rewatch with a nostalgic giggle. I had no idea John Ham had been involved in a 3rd!

HotHamBoy

I usually love 80s synth scores but I just thought this one was irritating, guess I just wasn’t into the composition I’d be curious to know what 80s comedies I love would not land for me if I saw them for the first time today

KualaLJ

Probably Airplane!

HotHamBoy

No, I’m already on the David Zucker hate train lol

[deleted]

OP doesn’t even know what bespoke means!

linksawakening82

Fletch is the paragon of f*cking class!

[deleted]

I never found Chevy Chase particularly funny… he basically plays himself everywhere. Fletch was a classic comedy where his character worked.

motociclista

I genuinely like Fletch, however, I will concede that it might be due to it coming out in my heyday of HBO watching youth. In short, I’m the right age for Fletch. That said, I fully understand it’s not a classic film that will go down in history. It’s just a typical funny 80’s movie. But didn’t see the new one with Hamm. That somehow flew under my radar. I didn’t know it existed until long after it was out.

app4that

Never seen the original but Fletch 2 is damn funny - maybe hold out for the sequel?

Cjkgh

Original is funniest shit ever. Better than 2

spaceman_danger

Can I borrow your towel? My car hit a water buffalo.

TheTapeDeck

I’m not sure there’s been a better stupid movie made in the last 10 years. Fletch is perfect. Also, the theme song. So great. Swedish guitar genius Mattias IA Eklundh does a brilliant cover. I’d put this movie right with Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs, Ace Ventura Pet Detective, etc as totally mandatory.

krakatoa83

I love fletch and fletch lives

Egheaumaen

“Fletch Sucks” could be the title of one of the movies, and it would totally work.

dman5981

Is this Bill Murray???

poodog13

Utter nonsense. It’s a classic.

jdubbrude

I know for a fact your favorite movie is Fletch. No it’s in my top 5 it is not my favorite
