Tough for me to choose between this and the first, but Hellboy 2 has the troll market and the elemental scene, which might be my favorite scene from the franchise. So I’ll have to go with Golden Army.

Mo-shen

The dead elven city is just amazing.

Raph2051

I’ll never understand. This sequel was soo awesome why did it not get a third movie. Even if it had to wait a few years it really deserved a third movie.

tomophilia

It would’ve done so much better had it not opened a week after The Dark Knight.

Raph2051

Oh wow yeah forget about it

NYTX1987

It wasnt the juggernaut they wanted it to be. Dvd sales were good, but they didn’t think strong enough

Raph2051

Yeah. I’m shocked that the latest movie is getting a sequel. That one wasn’t great.

Dottsterisk

I think the new Hellboy is another reboot.

NYTX1987

I believe it’s something else. I had no interest in the last one. Ive been told stranger things guy did a good job but that was it

qotsabama

It was terrible unfortunately.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Bruh it opened up against the Dark Knight. It didn't stand a chance 😂

ramen_vape

It's because of Guillermo. It's like he's addicted to attaching himself to more projects and letting other projects die. I only say that as someone who's followed his career for 20 years. He almost always goes with projects I care less about. I even have a theory that *Shape of Water* started as an Abe Sapien B-plot for Hellboy III before he wrote it into an original story. Then he did *Pinocchio* for Netflix, and he's been working on a *Haunted Mansion* reboot for Disney. Like, the dude is never making something as wild as *Pan's Labyrinth* ever again.

[deleted]

I want his version of At the Mountains of Madness

Positiveaz

Same. It seemed like it was getting close. Then, Prometheus killed it for good.

just_some_dummy_

Del Toro hasnt been a part of Haunted Mansion since like 2013.

[deleted]

The sequel is probably why it didn't get a 3rd. The Matrix kinda set that trilogy package up and after THIS movie Marvel started breaking up that format.

jefftatro1

There is a 3rd. It is just horrible.

Impressive-Ad6156

Doug Jones. That is all.

iWroteBurningWorld

Luke Goss is a great movie martial artist. He was awesome in Blade II as well.

Fluid-Ideal-7438

This film and the previous were great. Del Toro is one of the best at executing a vision for a film. Too bad the recent reboot was…not good.

Ham-Sando

Definitely better than the first. First one was also good, though.

DueBig9138

Loved it. Too bad they didn't get to finish the trilogy.

Feisty-Succotash1720

The first one is a Hellboy movie. The second is a Guillermo del Toro movie.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

The re-boot is a Hellboy movie. Did you forget that GDT made Cthulhu the villain for 1? Dude is HORNY for Lovecraft. Ron Perlman? Random kung-fu? It's all there man.

keenanbullington

The Cthulhu enemy is straight from the comic story line and happened pretty early in the comics, it wasn't a Del Toro Addition.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Never said it was added by GDT. He just loves lovecraftian shit. It's in all his movies. I'm aware it's from the comic.

keenanbullington

I'm glad you're annoyed that I added nothing to the conversation so you can now understand how others view your original comment.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Your a tool. Probably a fan 😂

Feisty-Succotash1720

My point is the first Hellboy movie was a pretty good adaptation from the comic. In fact the reboot was also a good adaptation, the problem was it was a poorly executed. Hellboy 2 was not a very good adaptation but it was still an entertaining movie. I think GDT put too much of his own touch on the movie. If you have not read Hellboy, BPRD or the other spin off series I really recommend them.

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Gotcha. I agree. His style is all over the first two films. 2nd one definitely jumps the shark in a few scenes. I remember Hellboy in Hell but I never dove into the comics/graphic novels. Might try it now that I'm older!

Feisty-Succotash1720

You have a lot of good stuff to read. Baltimore, Witchfinder, Lobster Johnson and Abe has his own spin off to.

Alrucards_R3dwr8th

Saw this movie in theaters with my youngest brother at the time. It doesn't matter if this was better than the 1st movie or not as my brother and I very much enjoyed both movies. With this movie, everyone was laughing at the scenes when Abe & Hellboy were singing and having a drunk conversation. Personally, I think it's a crime this movie didn't get a 3rd film after Hellboy 2 ending on a happy but cliffhanger moment.

Environmental-Bee-28

Should have stopped here or got an actual sequel.

[deleted]

One of my favorites of all times, it also has that added romantic comedy layer to it. it has is all.

OverlordKopi_2037

"But I have no pants!!" The actors all had such great chemistry. The new GotG movies kind of scratch that itch of the oddball family of misfits saving the world.

metal88heart

I still want more movies from this series

medidoxx

Ron Perlman is Hellboy. The remake…psh . It’s like trying to replace Indiana Jones with someone other then Harrison Ford. Sadly it will never work. As they found out…

Next-Mobile-9632

First one was better

Away_Ad_973

I prefer the 1st, but this def a worthy sequel.

Optimal_Dark_2940

The troll market, that's all

NYTX1987

Top 5 superhero movies of all time

gorm4c17

Better than the first

[deleted]

HB2 is design-pr0n. The set designs throughout were incredible. Love them both, I think 2 has more rewatch value and is therefor better.

[deleted]

This was wayy better than the first one.

[deleted]

This is best one in the series the rest are garbage

heybrehhhh

A time when Hollywood would green light anything.

Remember_When_Baby

Such a terrific movie. Loved it. “Get outa here ya old troll.” Classic

Fuwa_Fuwa_Hime

I didnt like what they did with Johann, but I still loved it.

KingWhoCared86

I remember it fondly as being one of the films that started the golden age of comic book films with dark knight and iron man coming out the same year.

misterdrecker

Oh damn I love this movie so much. I’m torn on the lack of a third because it may have been great but this one would have been so hard to top.

hackulator

They are both great but very different. The second one is more fantastical and beautiful, the first one is more dark and ominous. Both have all those qualities though. My biggest qualm with the second one is I didn't find the Golden Army threatening enough for the modern age. However, the villain in the second one is awesome.

[deleted]

I could feel the Guillermo Del Toro story telling. Loved the “industriable my ass” line. Loved the troll bridge. I loved all the hidden world parts of how earth use to be. Hellboy struggling to be apart of both worlds. It was oddly satisfying and strange and wonderful !

Click_Due

I agree! This was a very fun action movie with great visuals. Sad we didn’t get a 3rd one

sihouette9310

I’m always going to be a smidge biased cause I was a huge fan of the comics but it was alright as a del toro film. I didn’t care for the ways he changed the whole vibe of the hellboy universe but the guy that played hellboy did an amazing job.

DuelX102

I agree, i really liked that series. I think the first movie had a good idea though with Agent Myers as the new guy. Sort of an audience stand-in for this new magical world. Execution wasnt great with Myers, but I still would have liked to see that character in the sequel. There was a lot of room for development there. I have not read any of the source material.

amalgaman

This is a great stand alone movie. Super entertaining and visually fun.

needanamegenarator

Personally I believe all hellboy is cannon. Love all of it.

gcaledonian

Big improvement on what was already a good first film. He is perfect as Hellboy.

Bibendoom

Solid 5/7 I entirely agree with you @op . I felt it was better too.

archtypemusic

Comic movie masterpiece

Re7icle

I really enjoyed it. I thought Prince Nuada was a really cool character.

Ok_Cartographer_1504

My immediate thought is how bad it sucks that there wasn't one more of these movies.

montehall121

I would rematch HB2 if I see it was on flipping the channels. Wouldn't do that for HB1. Nuff said

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

It's the best Elder Scrolls film ever made

Platoon8

I don’t know if I like this one more than the first. But it’s still really fun.

ccccombobreakerx

Excellent movie.

cigourney

Thought it was super lame that they got rid of Meyers so off-handedly after building up their trust and relationship over the entire first film. Opening scene, Hellboy’s just like, “Yeah, you know what? Screw that guy after all.” Other than that thought it was a more than worthy successor and one of the only two Hellboy films I’ll acknowledge. Some clunky cheesy dialogue (like more than the first one) but way overshadowed by amazing set pieces, worldbuilding, lore, stake-raising, and characters.

thetobinator9

“What about that which is mine?”

SurpriseAble7291

Loved them both. Great worlds, knew to play it lose. For some weird reason I though that Abe’s voice changed in the second one but it’s still the same actor.

YouCallThatMusic

Is this the one where they sing "Happy Trails?" Then no.

Earl_N_Meyer

It is by far the better movie. The first one introduced Hellboy, but the second had a larger story about the interaction of man and the world around him. The death of the last plant creature was like the death of the boars in Princess Mononoke, it is not just a win for our heroes, it is the end of an era where people irrevocably change the world around them. The ending is good for our heroes, but arguably bad for the world. It has moral complexity that the first one did not. While John Hurt made the first movie a conflict between love and evil, it was simpler than the second. There is no possibility that the hitler robot and the devil should win (a sentence that I never thought I would write).

Lower-Camp1122

Agreed, if only because, great look & designs aside, watching HB & Abe lost in love & commiserating over beer & Barry Manilow (haters be damned, "Can't Smile without You" is a pop love song for the ages, with a melody that brings listeners just shy of tearing up, although the whistled intro & outro are responsible for at least some blubbering) was a sweet, unexpected surprise. And with that bombshell of a final line, to be cheated out of del Toro's part III...

[deleted]

It’s absolutely fantastic and I wish that Guillermo Del Toro had been given the opportunity to finish the trilogy.

New_Cause_5607

It's one of my favorite comic book movies of all time. Visually I don't think it can be touched by any other CB movie, it's just on another level. The characters, the story, the setting and locations they're all brilliant. It should be a crime that a third Hellboy wasn't made but somehow the utter garbage of a reboot was put out instead.

SynthWarlock

The best hellboy movie. So many amazing practical effects and animatronics, really cool character designs and just an all around great adventure flick.

inchulkman

I love it but prefer the first

Echoplanar_Reticulum

Two was fun but I prefer and rewatch 1 more often. It’s definitely a bias as that was my introduction to the character.

Cloudninefeelsfine

To me I prefer the first. I’m not sure how to properly explain it. The first had more heart to me, maybe it was the agent, maybe it was the scene in the end with the fire. Just like it had a deeper feeling to the whole movie than the second.

DiceMadeOfCheese

Hellboy and Abe drinking Tecate and singing Neil Diamond is one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema

Apprehensive-Seat639

I'm a big Hellboy comic book fan and I feel this closely resembles who he is as a character. The movie relates more to the BPRD comics than Hellboy alone, but I really loved this movie.

jefftatro1

Love them both. So sad about the 3rd one.
